A slow NAS transfer is usually limited by the weakest link in the path: a Wi‑Fi connection, a 100 Mbps negotiation, a gigabit switch port, a damaged cable, mismatched MTU, busy disks, or SMB processing. Start with a controlled wired test, then test the network independently with iperf3. This sequence separates network problems from NAS storage, client, and SMB problems before you buy new hardware.

Start with a controlled baseline

Test two workloads from the same client: one large file and a folder containing many small files. Large sequential transfers show the maximum sustained path more clearly; small files add metadata operations, directory lookups and file-open/close overhead, so they are normally slower even when the network is healthy.

First connect the client by Ethernet, disable its Wi‑Fi radio, and repeat both copies. For the clearest isolation test, connect the client directly to the NAS with Ethernet. Synology’s support guidance is explicit: “To transfer a file, use an Ethernet cable to connect your client PC and NAS directly.”

  • Direct wired copy is fast: the router, switch, Wi‑Fi link or an intermediate cable is the likely bottleneck.
  • Direct wired copy is still slow: continue with link negotiation, MTU, client, NAS storage and SMB checks.
  • Large files are fast but small files are slow: investigate workload and storage latency rather than assuming the network is defective.

Record the negotiated speed, transfer rate, file size and whether the test used Wi‑Fi, a switch or a direct cable. Without those controls, changing several settings at once can hide the actual cause.

Read the negotiated link speed on every hop

Open the NAS network-interface page and the client’s adapter status, then inspect the switch or router port status. A 1GbE port should report about 1,000 Mbps; a 10GbE RJ‑45 or SFP+ port should report about 10,000 Mbps. If any segment reports 100 Mbps, that segment can explain transfers that remain around 10 MB/s after protocol overhead.

Observed link state What it means Next action
100 Mbps A port, cable, negotiation setting or device is limiting the path. Replace the cable, try another port, check duplex/auto-negotiation and verify the adapter’s supported speed.
About 1,000 Mbps The segment is negotiating at gigabit Ethernet. Continue with MTU, iperf3, storage and SMB testing if copies remain slow.
About 10,000 Mbps The segment is negotiating at 10GbE. Check that every other segment, including the switch and client adapter, supports the intended rate.
Different speeds on different hops The slowest hop caps end-to-end throughput. Map the complete path and upgrade or bypass the slow segment.

A multi-gig NAS connected through a single Gigabit Ethernet switch port cannot run at its full 2.5 or 5 Gbps capability. NETGEAR states that multi-gig devices do not operate at full capacity through one Gigabit Ethernet port; that path is limited to 1 Gbps. The same principle applies to a client adapter, wall jack, patch panel or router port that negotiates below the NAS port’s speed.

Eliminate cable, port and MTU faults

Replace the physical link

Use Cat5e or better for gigabit Ethernet and test with a known-good cable. Replace cables that are sharply bent, crushed, kinked, unusually old or intermittently disconnecting. Move the cable to another switch port and, where possible, connect the client and NAS without the usual router or switch. A direct test that suddenly reaches the expected rate identifies the removed device or cable as the likely fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the MTU

Check the MTU configured on the NAS, client, switch and router. Keep all devices on the path at the same value unless you have a deliberately engineered jumbo-frame network. QNAP warns that an MTU mismatch can cause fragmentation, packet drops and a severe throughput collapse. After correcting MTU, reconnect the interfaces or restart the affected devices, then repeat the same large-file and small-file tests.

Check for link errors

Inspect interface counters for CRC errors, dropped packets, retransmissions or frequent link renegotiation. Errors that increase during a copy point to cabling, transceivers, a port or a physical-layer compatibility problem. Replace one component at a time so the change is identifiable.

Test network capacity separately from SMB

A file copy is not a pure network test. It includes SMB protocol work, encryption or signing, filesystem operations, client CPU time, NAS CPU time and disk performance. Use iperf3 between the NAS and client to isolate the network path.

  1. Install an iperf3 package or application on both endpoints.
  2. On one endpoint, start the server with iperf3 -s.
  3. On the other endpoint, run a client test using the server’s address: iperf3 -c NAS_IP.
  4. Repeat the test in the reverse direction with the -R option: iperf3 -c NAS_IP -R.
  5. Run several streams only as a diagnostic comparison, for example iperf3 -c NAS_IP -P 4; do not treat a multi-stream result as proof that a single SMB copy will scale identically.

QNAP describes iperf3 as a network-bandwidth test rather than a file-copy test. A normal result with a slow SMB copy shifts attention to storage, CPU, protocol configuration or the client. A poor result means the network path still needs attention before SMB tuning can be meaningful.

Check the client computer

Watch CPU and disk activity

During a transfer, open the client’s task manager or system monitor. Look for a saturated CPU, a nearly full or heavily active source/ destination disk, memory pressure and processes competing for I/O. A security scanner, cloud-sync client, backup job, indexing service or compression tool can inspect every file and reduce apparent NAS speed.

Update the network adapter

Install the current driver or firmware supplied for the client’s network adapter, then verify that auto-negotiation is enabled unless your network administrator has a documented fixed configuration. Synology recommends updating the NIC driver and temporarily removing software that affects performance. Test again after each change rather than applying a long list of tweaks simultaneously.

Use a local control copy

Copy the same large file between two local disks on the client. If local storage is already slow, the NAS cannot compensate. Also test from a second client on the same network. One fast client and one slow client indicates a client-specific issue; two slow clients make the NAS or network path more likely.

Inspect NAS CPU, memory and storage health

Check system load during the copy

Use the NAS resource monitor to observe CPU, memory, swap activity and process load. Transcoding, indexing, antivirus scans, snapshots, cloud synchronization, virtual machines and other background applications can consume resources needed by SMB. QNAP recommends disabling unused applications while diagnosing performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify pool and RAID state

Confirm that the storage pool is healthy and not rebuilding, resynchronizing or running a data-scrubbing operation. RAID recovery and degraded-mode writes can substantially change transfer behavior. Check disk SMART information, media errors and filesystem warnings. Do not begin a repair or rebuild solely to chase speed; preserve data first and follow the NAS vendor’s recovery procedure.

Run a sequential-read test

Use the NAS vendor’s storage benchmark or sequential-read performance test where available. QNAP recommends a sequential read performance test when investigating an underperforming disk. A disk or array that cannot read data quickly enough will cap a file copy even when iperf3 shows a healthy network.

Compare a single disk and the array carefully

If the NAS supports more than one volume, compare the same file from a healthy volume while monitoring disk latency. Different RAID levels, encryption, snapshots and filesystem features can produce different results. Treat any vendor benchmark as a diagnostic reference, not a guaranteed SMB speed.

Check SMB settings only after the path is healthy

Encryption and signing

SMB encryption and signing improve security but add processing work. Check whether they are required by policy and whether the client and NAS have hardware acceleration or sufficient CPU headroom. Do not disable security controls on an untrusted network merely to gain speed; instead, measure the cost on the actual endpoints.

Protocol versions

Use a current SMB version supported by both endpoints. Avoid forcing obsolete protocols to solve a performance problem. If a compatibility setting changes throughput, record the before-and-after result and retain the most secure setting that meets your requirements.

SMB3 Multichannel

SMB3 Multichannel can use multiple compatible network paths or adapters to increase aggregate bandwidth, but it is not a guaranteed linear multiplier. Both the client and NAS need compatible software and hardware, and the network paths must be configured correctly. Synology notes that a client with 1GbE wired and 150 Mbps Wi‑Fi prioritizes the faster wired adapter. It also states that aggregate throughput depends on endpoint capability rather than adapter count alone. The practical test is whether total throughput increases; Synology says, “As long as the total throughput increases, SMB3 Multichannel is considered to be functioning.”

Test Multichannel only after a single-link copy and iperf3 result are healthy. Otherwise, multiple paths make diagnosis harder and may combine a good link with a poor one.

Why Wi‑Fi copies are slower than Ethernet

Wi‑Fi throughput varies with signal strength, interference, channel width, band selection, distance, walls, neighboring networks and airtime contention. The speed shown by the client is a radio link rate, not a guaranteed SMB transfer rate. Other devices share the medium, and retransmissions consume airtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Move the client near the access point and test on the intended band.
  2. Temporarily disconnect other high-bandwidth clients.
  3. Check the client’s reported Wi‑Fi link rate and signal quality.
  4. Repeat the transfer with Wi‑Fi disabled and Ethernet enabled.
  5. Compare one large file with the small-file folder.

If Ethernet is consistently faster, use wired Ethernet for large backups, media libraries and disk images. Improve Wi‑Fi only when cabling is impractical; changing the NAS or adding a faster switch will not remove radio interference.

Choose upgrades by the measured bottleneck

Upgrade When it helps When it will not help
Cat6 cable The current cable is damaged, old or negotiating below its expected rate. The NAS disk, SMB processing or Wi‑Fi path is already the limit.
2.5GbE client adapter The client lacks multi-gig Ethernet and the NAS and switch provide 2.5GbE or faster ports. Any intervening port remains 1GbE, or the storage cannot supply more data.
Multi-gig switch A 1GbE switch port is limiting a multi-gig NAS and client. The client, NAS, cable or router still negotiates at a lower rate.
SMB3 Multichannel Single-link tests are healthy and both endpoints support compatible Multichannel operation. The network is unstable, one path is slow, or CPU/storage is already saturated.

Every link must support the target speed: NAS port, client adapter, switch ports, router or wall jack, transceivers and cabling. A single 1GbE segment limits a path that otherwise contains 2.5GbE or 10GbE hardware.

A decision tree for common symptoms

“I am stuck around 10 MB/s.”

Check for a 100 Mbps negotiation first, then inspect cable and duplex status. If the link is 1GbE, run iperf3. A normal network result means the apparent ceiling is more likely SMB, a busy disk, encryption, scanning or a small-file workload.

“Wi‑Fi is much slower than Ethernet.”

That is expected when radio conditions or contention limit the wireless path. Establish the wired baseline, then test closer to the access point and on a less congested band. Do not judge NAS hardware from a Wi‑Fi-only copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A 2.5GbE adapter changed nothing.”

Verify that the NAS and switch also expose 2.5GbE or faster ports and that the adapter actually negotiated above 1GbE. Then compare iperf3 with a large-file copy. If the network test improves but SMB does not, storage, CPU or protocol overhead is now the limiting layer.

“Large files are acceptable but folders are painfully slow.”

That pattern points to per-file metadata and storage latency. Test a single archive of the same data only as a diagnostic comparison; it does not make an application that requires individual files faster. Check NAS disk latency, client scanning and the number of files.

“Performance changes during the day.”

Look for Wi‑Fi airtime contention, scheduled backups, cloud synchronization, indexing, snapshots, RAID maintenance and other background jobs. Correlate the transfer with NAS resource graphs and switch error counters.

Recommended troubleshooting order

  1. Repeat one large-file and one small-file copy with Wi‑Fi disabled.
  2. Connect the client directly to the NAS by Ethernet for an isolation test.
  3. Record negotiated speed on the client, NAS and every switch or router port.
  4. Replace the cable and try another port if any segment negotiates below expectation or shows errors.
  5. Match MTU across the NAS, client, switch and router.
  6. Run iperf3 in both directions.
  7. Check client CPU, disk activity, drivers and security or backup software.
  8. Check NAS CPU, memory, pool status, RAID activity, SMART data and background applications.
  9. Review SMB encryption, signing, protocol and Multichannel settings.
  10. Upgrade only the component identified as the bottleneck, then repeat the original controlled tests.

This order prevents an expensive multi-gig upgrade from masking a damaged cable, a 100 Mbps negotiation or an overloaded disk. It also gives you a reproducible before-and-after result for every change.
