Consumer Skype cannot be repaired on Windows 11 because Microsoft retired it on May 5, 2025. The supported route is to sign in to Microsoft Teams Free with the same Skype credentials; Skype for Business is a separate product and was not affected.

If your camera or microphone is failing in Teams Free, troubleshoot the Windows or browser device permissions separately. The steps below first identify the Skype product, then explain migration and current Windows 11 device checks.

First, identify which Skype product you are using

Product Current status What to do
Consumer Skype Retired on May 5, 2025 Move to Microsoft Teams Free
Skype for Business Not affected by the consumer Skype retirement Use your organisation’s Skype for Business or Microsoft 365 support process

If you installed Skype for personal use and it now refuses to sign in, cannot make calls, or displays a retirement message, reinstalling it will not restore the service. Do not treat old instructions referring to Profile picture > Settings > Audio and Video Settings as a current consumer-Skype repair procedure.

Move consumer Skype to Microsoft Teams Free

  1. Install or open Microsoft Teams Free on Windows 11, or use Teams on the web.
  2. Select Sign in.
  3. Use the Microsoft account credentials you used for Skype. Microsoft directs users to Teams Free and says contacts and chats can transfer, but continued availability of chat history has eligibility conditions.
  4. Allow Teams to access your microphone and camera when Windows, your browser, or Teams asks for permission.
  5. Make a test call from Teams Free.

Microsoft’s current guidance says the specified Skype history remains available in Teams Free only for users who were active in Skype between December 2024 and February 2025 and moved to and used Teams Free before December 1, 2025. Do not assume that every historical chat or call record will appear indefinitely. If contacts or chats do not appear, confirm that you used the same Skype account rather than creating a new Microsoft account.

Microsoft’s stated final day to request a Skype-data export was June 15, 2026, and that date has passed. Microsoft also says deletion began April 1, 2026, so exports requested after that point might not contain complete history. Consult Microsoft’s current Skype support page for any account-specific options that remain.

If the real problem is a camera or microphone that does not work in Teams

These checks diagnose Windows 11 or browser devices rather than restore retired consumer Skype.

1. Run Microsoft’s camera troubleshooter

  1. Open the Get Help app from Start.
  2. Search for the camera troubleshooter, or open Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting page and select Run the troubleshooter in Get Help.
  3. Follow the questions and apply any suggested fix.

This is Microsoft’s recommended first diagnostic step on current Windows 11 systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Test the camera outside the calling app

  1. Select Start, type Camera, and open the Windows Camera app.
  2. Check whether you can see a live preview.

If the camera works in Camera but not Teams, the fault is probably application-specific. If Camera also fails, continue with the Windows, hardware, and driver checks below.

3. Enable Windows 11 camera permissions

  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
  2. Turn on Camera access.
  3. Turn on Let apps access your camera.
  4. Turn on Let desktop apps access your camera.

You may not see Skype as an individual switch. Traditional desktop applications generally are not listed with separate Microsoft Store-app toggles. Windows controls their camera access collectively through Let desktop apps access your camera.

If Camera access is off and greyed out, an administrator controls the setting. On a work-managed PC, contact your IT administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction.

4. Enable Windows 11 microphone permissions

  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
  2. Turn on Microphone access.
  3. Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
  4. Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.

In Teams, also confirm that the intended microphone is selected and that it is not muted. A work-managed PC may prevent changes to these settings; contact your administrator if a permission is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check browser permissions when using Teams on the web

  1. Open the browser’s site permissions for the Teams page.
  2. Allow the site to use the camera and microphone.
  3. Refresh the Teams page and join the call again.

Windows permissions and browser site permissions both apply to Teams in a browser. A blocked permission at either level can prevent video or audio.

6. Check physical camera controls

A privacy feature can make a working camera appear broken. Check for:

  • An Fn-key camera shortcut, such as an Fn key marked with a camera icon
  • A dedicated camera button
  • A hardware switch on the side of the laptop
  • A built-in privacy shutter covering the lens

For a USB webcam, unplug and reconnect it firmly. Try a different USB port, inspect the cable, and test the webcam on another computer. If it fails on another device too, the webcam or its cable may have a hardware fault.

7. Close applications already using the camera or microphone

Only one application may be able to use some cameras at a time. Close Teams, Zoom, a browser video-call tab, Camera, and other software that may have opened the webcam or microphone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a program remains open in the background:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Find the camera-using application under running processes.
  3. Right-click it and select End task.
  4. Open Teams again and test the camera or microphone.

Microsoft identifies another application using the camera as a possible cause of errors including 0xA00F4243, 0xA00F4289, and 0x80070005.

8. Restart Teams and Windows properly

Quit and reopen Teams after changing device permissions. For a Windows restart, choose Start > Power > Restart. This is different from waking the PC from sleep and can clear a camera process or driver that has stopped responding.

9. Try Basic camera driver mode in Teams

For intermittent or missing camera detection, open Teams camera settings and try Basic camera driver mode if that option is available, then restart Teams and test again.

10. Check for Windows and optional driver updates

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates and install available updates.
  3. If no camera update appears, open Advanced options > Optional updates.
  4. Install a relevant camera or audio driver update if one is offered, then restart Windows.

Also check the PC manufacturer’s support page if Windows Update does not provide a driver. Use the exact model number; laptop camera and audio drivers are often supplied by the manufacturer.

11. Roll back a camera driver after an update

If the camera stopped working immediately after a Windows or driver update, a rollback may restore it:

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Cameras.
  3. Right-click the camera and select Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Select Roll Back Driver, if available, and follow the prompts.

The rollback button is unavailable for some drivers. If it is missing, use the reinstall procedure instead.

12. Reinstall the camera driver

  1. Open Device Manager and expand Cameras.
  2. Right-click the affected camera and choose Properties.
  3. On the Driver tab, select Uninstall Device.
  4. Select Attempt to remove the driver for this device, if shown.
  5. Select OK.
  6. In Device Manager, open Action > Scan for hardware changes.
  7. Restart Windows and test the camera again.

What specific camera errors usually indicate

0xA00F4243, 0xA00F4289, or 0x80070005 Another application may be using the camera; close it or end its task.
0xA00F4292 Camera access may be restricted by Group Policy or another organisation policy. Contact IT.
Camera permission is greyed out An administrator controls the Windows privacy setting.
Camera works in Camera but not Teams Investigate Teams permissions, its selected camera, browser permissions, or security software.
Camera fails everywhere Check privacy hardware, USB connections, Windows permissions, drivers, and possible hardware failure.

Check security software if only one app is blocked

Antivirus and third-party security tools can block camera or microphone access for individual applications. Temporarily review the security product’s webcam or privacy-protection settings, or ask the security administrator whether Teams is being blocked. Do not leave protection disabled permanently; re-enable it after testing.

When the problem is a work account

If the application is genuinely Skype for Business, do not follow consumer Skype migration instructions. Skype for Business has separate account, server, policy, and support arrangements. A camera blocked by a company policy, including error 0xA00F4292, may require your organisation’s IT administrator to change Group Policy or another managed setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no Microsoft-recommended Command Prompt or PowerShell command required for the current Windows 11 camera procedure. The supported diagnostic route uses Get Help, Settings, Camera, Task Manager, Device Manager, and Windows Update.

FAQ

Can I still fix consumer Skype on Windows 11?

No. Consumer Skype was retired on May 5, 2025, so reinstalling or repairing the old app cannot restore the consumer service. Sign in to Microsoft Teams Free with the same Skype credentials instead.

Will my Skype contacts and chats appear in Teams Free?

Microsoft directs users to Teams Free and says contacts and chats can transfer when you sign in with your existing Skype credentials. Chat-history availability has conditions: Microsoft’s guidance refers to users active between December 2024 and February 2025 who moved to and used Teams Free before December 1, 2025. Use the same account and do not assume every historical record will be retained.

Why is Skype missing from Windows 11 camera permissions?

Desktop applications generally do not receive individual camera toggles in Windows 11. Enable Camera access, Let apps access your camera, and Let desktop apps access your camera under Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the camera works in the Camera app but not Teams?

Treat it as an application-specific problem. Confirm Teams and, when applicable, the browser have permission, select the correct camera, close other camera-using applications, try Basic camera driver mode, and check that security software is not blocking Teams.

How do I fix a microphone that does not work in Teams?

Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and enable microphone access, app access, and desktop-app access as applicable. Check the selected microphone and browser site permission, then restart Teams.

Does the Skype retirement affect Skype for Business?

No. Microsoft’s May 5, 2025 retirement applies to consumer Skype. Skype for Business is a separate product and requires separate organisation-specific support.

Can I export my old Skype data now?

Microsoft’s stated final day to request an export was June 15, 2026, so that deadline has passed. Microsoft says deletion began April 1, 2026 and exports after then might be incomplete. Check Microsoft’s current support page for any account-specific options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Consumer Skype cannot be repaired into a working supported service on Windows 11 because Microsoft retired it on May 5, 2025. Move to Microsoft Teams Free using the same credentials, while remembering that chat-history availability has eligibility conditions. If the continuing problem is a webcam or microphone failure in Teams, test the devices separately, enable Windows and browser permissions, check privacy hardware and competing applications, then update or reinstall drivers. For Skype for Business, use your organisation’s separate support route.
