Shader compilation stutter happens when a game pauses rendering to compile GPU shaders or pipeline state while you play. The most reliable fixes move that work to startup, loading screens, or background processing: enable the game’s shader or pipeline precompilation, let Steam finish Vulkan shader processing, and verify that a cache actually covers your game build and graphics API. There is no universal hardware upgrade, driver toggle, or cache-deletion procedure proven to fix every game.
What shader compilation stutter is
A game sends the GPU small programs called shaders for tasks such as transforming geometry, calculating lighting, applying materials, and presenting post-processing effects. Before the GPU can execute a particular shader, the game engine and graphics driver may need to compile it into hardware-specific code. A related operation assembles shaders and render-state settings into a pipeline state object (PSO).
If compilation occurs during gameplay, the render thread or another time-critical task can stop long enough for the work to finish. The result is a brief but obvious hitch: the average frame rate may look acceptable, yet camera movement pauses when a new effect, material, weapon, area, or particle system appears.

Epic describes the mechanism in its Unreal Engine documentation: “Unreal Engine compiles material instructions into shaders to prepare them for execution on the GPU. While materials’ overall performance improves significantly once compilation is finished, the act of compiling shaders can result in significant processing spikes, which in turn causes momentary but noticeable framerate hitches.” The explanation is specific to Unreal’s rendering pipeline, but the underlying symptom can occur in other engines as well. See Epic’s Unreal Engine performance guidance.

Shader compilation versus PSO compilation
These terms overlap but are not identical. Shader compilation turns source, intermediate code, or material instructions into code suitable for a GPU. PSO creation combines shader stages with fixed-function state such as blend, rasterizer, depth, and render-target settings. A game can have compiled shader binaries and still pause while creating a pipeline combination it has not used before. That is why a folder full of cache files does not, by itself, prove that every hitch-causing state is covered.
Compilation can also happen in stages. A game may gather information while loading, compile asynchronously in the background, and then perform a smaller final step when a state is first requested. The goal is not necessarily to eliminate all startup work; it is to keep expensive or blocking work out of the frame that must be displayed immediately.
First determine whether compilation is the cause
Stutter that happens only the first time you see an effect is consistent with shader or PSO compilation, but timing alone is not proof. Texture streaming, asset decompression, CPU simulation, shader-cache misses, and driver problems can produce similar pauses.
- Pattern: hitches recur when a new area, material, weather effect, weapon, or visual effect appears, then become less frequent after you have seen it.
- Timing: the pause occurs during a loading transition or immediately after entering a new scene, rather than at a regular interval unrelated to what is on screen.
- Messages: the game, launcher, or Steam displays shader-processing or Vulkan-shader progress before play.
- Evidence: a log, overlay, or profile records a shader compile, PSO creation, cache miss, or late precache task at the hitch.
Compare a first pass through one repeatable scene with a second pass using identical settings. Improvement on the second pass supports a cache or first-use explanation, but it is still not conclusive: assets may have been streamed into memory, and other one-time initialization may also have completed. Record frame-time spikes rather than relying only on the average FPS counter.
If none of these signals is present, treat shader compilation as a hypothesis. Do not delete files or buy hardware solely because the stutter looks like a shader hitch.
Fixes for Steam players using Vulkan
Steam’s Vulkan shader pre-cache is separate from an engine’s PSO cache. A Valve developer explained that Steam can take hardware-independent Vulkan shaders already observed for a game and give them to the video driver for conversion into hardware-specific code. That process can reduce first-use compilation when the game runs, but it does not guarantee that every shader or pipeline state is included. The explanation appears in the Valve Proton issue discussion (the comment is from 2023).
This distinction matters when diagnosing a game that uses Vulkan through Proton or another Linux compatibility path. Steam’s client can prepare shader data before launch, while the game engine still controls which pipelines it requests and when. A title using DirectX, a non-Steam launcher, or a proprietary engine cache may not use this Steam path at all.

Background processing consumes time, disk space, and some CPU resources before launch. On a new installation or after a major update, allow the queue to finish rather than repeatedly starting and quitting the game. If the client is offline or has no shader data for a title, there may be nothing for Steam to process; that is not evidence that the game’s own precaching is broken.
Understand what Steam’s cache can and cannot do
- It can provide previously seen, hardware-independent Vulkan shader data to the driver for conversion.
- It cannot precompile shader variants that the game has never submitted, content added after the cache was built, or pipeline combinations omitted by the game’s capture process.
- A driver change, game update, graphics-setting change, or API change can make existing compiled data unusable or incomplete.
If Steam reports no work, yet a game still hitches whenever new content appears, investigate the game’s own cache and logs instead of assuming the Steam setting failed. Conversely, if only the first launch after a driver or game update stutters and later launches are smooth, rebuilding hardware-specific data may simply be part of normal cache invalidation.
Unreal Engine games: check PSO precaching and cache misses
Unreal Engine’s PSO precaching gathers the state information needed for rendering and compiles PSOs asynchronously before they are required. A bundled PSO cache can supply states earlier in the run. Epic’s PSO precaching documentation and PSO cache optimization guidance describe the controls and diagnostics; these pages document Unreal Engine 5.8 and should not be generalized to every engine.
Automatic precaching can collect PSO information from assets and begin asynchronous compilation ahead of first use. A packaged cache can reduce the amount of discovery required on a player’s machine, but it still has to be opened, populated, and compatible with the active rendering path. A cache made for one build, feature set, or graphics API should not be assumed to work after those conditions change.
What a player can do
As a player, use the game’s supported options first. If the game offers shader compilation, PSO precaching, or an initial “optimizing shaders” step, allow it to finish after installing or updating the game. Avoid terminating that process repeatedly, because an incomplete cache may leave first-use work for gameplay. If the developer provides a game-specific cache reset or repair instruction, follow that instruction exactly; there is no universal, source-backed procedure for deleting shader caches safely.
When a game continues to hitch, record the graphics API (for example, Vulkan or DirectX), the location or effect that triggers the pause, whether the hitch is repeatable, and the game version. Give those details to the developer’s support channel. The Unreal diagnostics below generally require developer access.
What a developer should verify
- Confirm the cache opens. Check the log for evidence that the intended PSO cache was found and opened rather than silently skipped.
- Check population and task counts. Verify that the cache contains entries and that precache tasks are being scheduled. An empty cache or zero useful tasks cannot prevent first-use compilation.
- Watch for newly encountered PSOs. A runtime-created PSO that was not in the bundled or collected cache is a likely miss. Record which material, mesh, shader permutation, or render state caused it.
- Confirm graphics-API compatibility. A cache made for one API or incompatible build cannot be assumed to work for another. Validate the active API and the cache’s compatibility requirements.
- Profile the hitch. Unreal Insights can show PSO precache timers and missed or late PSOs. If the profile contains no PSO evidence, use a CPU profiler to find the actual blocking work.
Epic’s FShaderPipelineCache API reference covers logging, serialization, and precompilation. Treat the documented 20 ms runtime-creation hitch threshold as an Unreal diagnostic default, not a universal definition of stutter for all games or hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsValidation should include both a clean run and a warm-cache run. A clean run reveals whether the shipped cache is sufficient; a warm run shows whether runtime misses continue after the game has observed the scene. Unreal’s tracking and Insights timers can identify PSOs that were late even when a cache existed, which is more useful than checking only whether a cache file is present.

How the main precompilation mechanisms differ
These systems are complementary, not interchangeable. Compare them by who performs the work, when it runs, what it covers, and how you can verify a miss.
| Mechanism | Who performs the work | When it runs | Coverage and compatibility | Evidence to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unreal PSO precaching | Game engine | Asynchronously before first use, commonly during startup, loading, or while content is prepared | PSO states known to the game build; must match the supported graphics API and required content | Unreal logs, precache task counts, newly encountered PSOs, and Unreal Insights timers |
| Bundled Unreal PSO cache | Game developer’s build plus the Unreal runtime | Loaded and compiled earlier in the run from packaged cache data | Only states included in the bundle and compatible with that build/API | Cache-open and population messages, plus runtime cache misses |
| Steam Vulkan shader pre-cache | Steam and the graphics driver | Steam can process data in the background before launch; the driver performs hardware-specific conversion | Previously seen, hardware-independent Vulkan shaders; not a guarantee for every game, API, or new shader | Steam’s shader-processing status and whether the same first-use events still hitch |
The practical trade-off is timing. Moving work earlier can lengthen startup or loading and increase temporary CPU, memory, and storage use, but it avoids blocking a frame during play. Leaving work until first use may shorten startup while producing visible hitches. The correct balance depends on the game’s content and target hardware, so compare frame-time consistency with startup and loading costs.
A complete troubleshooting sequence
1. Reproduce the hitch deliberately
Choose one repeatable location or effect. Note whether the first pass hitches, whether a second pass is smoother, and whether the behavior changes after a game restart. Use the same graphics settings and API for each comparison. This establishes a baseline without confusing unrelated frame-time spikes with compilation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Let supported preprocessing finish
Complete the game’s own shader or PSO preparation step. For a Steam Vulkan title, enable background processing in Steam > Settings > Downloads when that option exists and wait for processing to finish. Do not assume a completed Steam task means an engine-level PSO cache is complete.
3. Check for updates, but do not treat updating as a guaranteed fix
Install the game’s currently supported update and use the graphics API recommended by its developer. Updates can change shader permutations and invalidate older cache data, so test again after the update’s own preprocessing completes. The available documentation does not establish a universal driver-update remedy.
4. Verify cache evidence
Players may see a progress screen or launcher message. Developers should inspect logs for cache opening, entry counts, precache tasks, API compatibility, and runtime-created PSOs. A cache that exists on disk is not proof that it contains the states causing the hitch.
5. Separate a cache miss from another bottleneck
If the hitch coincides with a late PSO, fix collection or precaching coverage. If no PSO event appears, profile CPU work, asset loading, streaming, and decompression instead. Unreal’s guidance specifically recommends CPU profiling when PSO evidence is absent.
6. Test one change at a time
- Keep a record of the API, game build, graphics settings, and cache state.
- Change only one setting or preprocessing path before repeating the same scene.
- Compare frame-time spikes, not just the displayed average FPS.
- Stop using a workaround that increases startup time without reducing in-game hitches.
Developer implementation considerations
Automatic PSO precaching and bundled caches reduce the amount of state compilation left for gameplay, but they shift work to startup, loading, background processing, memory, and storage. Epic notes that compilation workload affects memory and performance, so a larger precache job is not automatically better. Measure startup duration, loading behavior, memory use, and frame-time consistency on representative hardware.

Compilation workload can compete with other loading tasks. If asynchronous jobs saturate CPU cores or memory bandwidth, the preparation phase itself may become slow or cause loading-time instability. Profile the complete path rather than optimizing only the final runtime hitch. A smaller, accurate cache can be preferable to a broad cache full of states the game never requests.
Build a cache that matches the shipped game
- Collect states from the content and rendering paths players actually use.
- Regenerate or validate cache data when materials, shaders, render settings, engine versions, or graphics APIs change.
- Track states that are discovered at runtime and feed those misses back into the collection process.
- Test first-use behavior after a clean install and after an update, not only on a developer machine with a warm cache.
Precaching is asynchronous, so the game must handle the period while compilation is still in progress. Do not present a scene as fully protected from hitches unless the required PSOs have completed or the renderer has a safe fallback.

Buying a faster GPU, CPU, or SSD
Faster hardware may reduce the duration of a compile or improve overall performance, but the documented remedies here are caching, precompilation, and diagnosis. No generic GPU, CPU, memory, storage, or cooling purchase is established as a fix for shader-compilation stutter in every PC game.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Deleting every shader cache
Cache deletion can remove useful compiled data and force the game or driver to repeat the work. Because cache locations and safe reset procedures are game- and driver-specific, use only instructions from the game’s developer or platform support documentation. There is no universal deletion recipe supported by the evidence available here.
Assuming NVIDIA cache pruning is the cause
An individual report in a Valve issue tracker suspected cache pruning on NVIDIA systems, but it is not verified root-cause evidence and does not justify a general claim that NVIDIA drivers prune caches in a way that causes stutter. Treat such reports as leads for a specific investigation, not as a diagnosis.
When to contact the game developer
Report the issue when preprocessing completes but a repeatable first-use hitch remains. Include the game version, platform and launcher, graphics API, GPU and driver version, CPU and memory configuration, graphics settings, the exact scene or effect, whether the second pass improves, and any shader or PSO log lines. Ask whether the title uses a bundled PSO cache, automatic precaching, or a known cache reset procedure. This gives the developer enough information to distinguish an uncovered PSO from a non-compilation bottleneck.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a game compile shaders every time I launch it?
A game or driver may be rebuilding data because the cache is incomplete, invalidated by an update or graphics-API change, or stored in a path the game cannot open. Steam’s Vulkan pre-cache and an engine’s PSO cache are separate, so one can finish while the other still has work.
Should I disable shader pre-caching to reduce loading time?
Disabling it may shorten preparation but can move compilation into first use and make gameplay hitches more visible. Test the same scene with preprocessing enabled and compare frame-time spikes, startup time, and memory use.

Is a 20 ms compile the definition of a stutter?
No. The 20 ms value documented by Unreal is a runtime-creation diagnostic default. Perceived stutter depends on frame pacing, display refresh, and what else the game is doing.
Does a shader cache guarantee smooth performance?
No. Caches cover only the states they contain and support. Newly encountered PSOs, incompatible APIs, changed game builds, and non-compilation bottlenecks can still cause pauses.
What should I send support?
Provide the game build, launcher, graphics API, GPU and driver, CPU and memory, settings, repeatable location, first- versus second-pass behavior, preprocessing status, and relevant log or profile lines.
Bottom line
Fix shader compilation stutter by moving compilation out of the critical frame path and proving that the relevant states are covered. Let Steam finish Vulkan shader processing when applicable, allow the game’s own shader or PSO preparation to complete, and use Unreal logs or Insights to identify cache misses and late PSOs. If those records do not show compilation, investigate CPU and asset-loading work instead; a universal hardware purchase, driver toggle, or cache-deletion command is not established as the answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a game compile shaders every time I launch it?
The cache may be incomplete, invalidated by an update or graphics-API change, or inaccessible to the game. Steam’s Vulkan pre-cache and an engine’s PSO cache are separate systems, so one can finish while the other still has work.
Should I disable shader pre-caching to reduce loading time?
Disabling it may shorten preparation but move compilation into first use. Compare the same scene with preprocessing enabled and disabled, measuring frame-time spikes as well as startup time.
Does a shader cache guarantee smooth performance?
No. It covers only included, compatible states. Newly encountered PSOs, changed builds, and unrelated CPU or asset-loading work can still cause hitches.
