For component-store corruption on Windows Server 2025, Microsoft’s repair order is to run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth from an elevated Command Prompt, then run sfc /scannow. This is a documented troubleshooting sequence, not a guarantee that every SFC or DISM error has the same cause or will be fixed by these commands.
What to check before repairing
The title alone does not identify a particular error code or cause. Before changing the server, record the exact command you ran, the complete output and error code, the Windows Server 2025 edition and OS build, and whether the server can reach Windows Update. Those details help distinguish a repair-source problem from another failure, including one associated with installing a role or feature.
Run DISM before SFC
Open Command Prompt with administrative privileges. The account must be a member of the Administrators group to run SFC. For component-store corruption, Microsoft documents this sequence:
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. - If DISM completes successfully, run
sfc /scannow. - Review the command output and note whether either utility reports that it could not repair files or locate source files.
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If that source cannot provide the required files, Microsoft describes supplying a valid Windows installation or Windows folder as an alternate source. Do not assume a source path or WIM index without confirming it matches the installed system and the repair scenario.

If DISM cannot find repair files
The message “The source files could not be found” points to a source issue, but the exact code and log entries matter. If the server cannot obtain files through Windows Update or DISM reports a source problem, use an appropriate Windows source. Microsoft’s example uses a Windows folder on another computer running the same operating-system version:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<servername>c$windows /LimitAccess

Replace <servername> with the name of a computer that provides a suitable source, and verify the source is valid for the affected server before running the command. /LimitAccess prevents DISM from using Windows Update. If you cannot validate a matching source, do not guess at a path or image index.

If the output contains 0x800F081F, Microsoft defines it as CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING: the source for a package or file was not found. Microsoft’s listed mitigation for this component-store condition is DISM RestoreHealth followed by SFC and a restart. Apply that interpretation only when this exact code appears; it is not established as the cause of an unspecified SFC or DISM failure.

Check CBS.log when repair does not succeed
If DISM does not report successful completion, inspect %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. Correlate the relevant entries with the time you ran the command and the error shown in the console. The log can provide diagnostic detail, but the information here does not establish a case-specific root cause without the affected server’s output and log entries.
When the error occurs during role or feature installation
If SFC or DISM fails while installing a Windows Server role or feature, use Microsoft’s Server-specific feature and role troubleshooting guidance as well as the component-store repair sequence. Check CBS.log and run SFC after component-store repair; do not assume every installation failure is caused by Windows Update access.

What is needed to confirm the server’s cause
- The exact DISM or SFC command and its complete output, including any code.
- The Windows Server 2025 edition and OS build.
- Whether the server can reach Windows Update, or what alternate repair source was used.
- Relevant CBS.log entries from the time of failure.
Without those details, the documented repair order can be given, but a specific server’s underlying cause or successful resolution cannot be confirmed.
