A blank or abruptly closed WordPress response is not proof of a segmentation fault. Confirm a native crash by matching the request time with Apache’s Segmentation fault (11) or exit signal entry and a PHP-FPM signal-11 record. Once the crash is confirmed, isolate WordPress code from the PHP runtime, then collect a core dump and debugger backtrace if the failure is reproducible. This evidence-led process is safer and faster than repeatedly raising WordPress’s memory limit or changing random plugins.
What a WordPress segmentation fault looks like
A segmentation fault (SIGSEGV, signal 11) is a native-process crash. Apache, PHP, an extension, or a linked system library attempted to access invalid memory; the operating system terminated the worker. PHP code normally produces a fatal-error message, while a native crash can end the request with an empty body, a reset connection, or a generic gateway error.

A page that fails only for one URL may execute a particular template, shortcode, block, database query, or plugin callback that other requests never reach.
Confirm it is not merely a blank response
- Reproduce the problem once and record the exact time in UTC. Do not make several configuration changes before checking the logs.
- Inspect Apache’s
ErrorLogfor an entry equivalent tochild pid 2027 exit signal Segmentation fault (11), possible coredump in /tmp. The process ID and path will differ on your server. - Check the PHP-FPM pool error log and the service journal for
SIGSEGV,signal 11, or a worker that exited at the same moment. - Compare those entries with the access log and the WordPress request time. A matching native-process event is the evidence that distinguishes a crash from an ordinary PHP fatal error, timeout, proxy failure, or upstream disconnect.
Apache’s debugging guidance describes the exit signal Segmentation fault (11) line as the characteristic child-process message. PHP’s documentation also warns that a blank response can indicate a PHP crash and recommends checking the web-server error log. If neither Apache nor PHP-FPM records a signal-11 event, continue investigating normal application and infrastructure errors instead of treating the incident as a confirmed segfault.

Collect a clean evidence set before changing production
Use a staging clone whenever possible. Native crashes can leave no PHP stack trace, so preserve the surrounding evidence before disabling modules, upgrading packages, or changing the web-server architecture.
Record the request and runtime
- Exact URL, query parameters, HTTP method, user role, cookies or authentication state, and UTC reproduction time.
- WordPress version, active theme, active and recently changed plugins, and whether the failure occurs on the front end, in
wp-admin, or only for a specific template. - PHP version, SAPI (PHP-FPM, CGI, or Apache module), operating-system distribution and package build, CPU architecture, and loaded extensions.
- Apache version, MPM (
event,worker, orprefork), loaded modules, virtual-host configuration, and PHP-FPM pool name. - Opcache settings, relevant
php.inivalues, recent package or extension changes, and whether workers are recycled.
Keep logs synchronized and sanitized
Export the relevant Apache error and access-log lines, PHP-FPM pool log and journal entries, and WordPress log lines around the same timestamp. Remove passwords, authorization headers, session cookies, personal data, and database credentials. A core file can contain request data and secrets; restrict its permissions, copy it only to a controlled diagnostic location, and delete it after the incident workflow.
Enable WordPress diagnostics without exposing errors
WordPress’s debug tools are intended for local testing and staging, not for displaying diagnostics to visitors on a live site. In a staging copy, edit wp-config.php and place these definitions before the line that says WordPress has stopped editing the file:

define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );WP_DEBUG_LOG requires WP_DEBUG to be true. With the standard setting, WordPress writes to wp-content/debug.log; it can also be configured with a specific path. Keeping WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY false prevents notices and warnings from being sent to browsers while you reproduce the request.
Read the log correctly
- Clear or archive the old staging log so the reproduction is easy to identify.
- Request the failing URL once, using the same method, account, and query string that triggered the problem.
- Search for the timestamp, plugin or theme names, PHP warnings, and the last hook or callback that completed.
- Compare the final WordPress entry with Apache and PHP-FPM records. A native segfault may stop PHP before it can write a final PHP message, so an abruptly truncated
debug.logdoes not rule out an extension or runtime defect.
After troubleshooting, disable debugging on production and remove or protect any logs that contain sensitive request information.

Isolate WordPress code methodically
WordPress identifies plugin conflicts, theme conflicts, and incompatible PHP versions as common causes of critical errors. Isolation should be reversible and should change one variable at a time.

Test plugins in batches, then individually
- On staging, disable all nonessential plugins while keeping the exact URL and account state.
- Repeat the request and check both the native logs and the browser result.
- If the crash stops, re-enable plugins in small groups until the failing group is identified.
- Disable members of that group one at a time, reproducing after each change, until one plugin or interaction is associated with the crash.
A plugin that correlates with the failure is not automatically the native cause. Its code may invoke a vulnerable PHP extension, trigger a particular database result, or exercise an incompatible PHP API. Preserve the logs and runtime details before updating or replacing it.
Switch to a bundled default theme
Activate a current WordPress bundled/default theme on staging and repeat the same request. If the failure disappears, compare the affected template, shortcode, block, custom query, and theme hooks. If it remains, restore the original theme and continue with plugins and the runtime. Do not edit the production theme while trying to prove causation.
Compare a simple request and other WordPress paths
- Request the home page, a simple post, and
wp-adminto determine whether the crash is path-specific. - Run a minimal PHP request through the same SAPI. A minimal request that also crashes points away from the page’s content and toward PHP, an extension, or the web-server integration.
- Compare the failing page with a version that omits its shortcode, block, custom query, or template part. Keep a copy of the original content so the test remains reversible.
Do not assume that increasing memory_limit fixes a segfault. Memory exhaustion and a native invalid-memory access are different failure classes; a signal-11 event requires runtime-level evidence.
Check PHP versions and extensions safely
Record the current runtime before changing it. A supported PHP version with the same extension set is a useful comparison; changing PHP, extensions, and WordPress code simultaneously destroys the ability to identify the trigger.

Build a comparison checklist
- Compare the installed PHP release with the version supported by the WordPress version, theme, and plugins.
- List loaded extensions and their package versions, including image, database, caching, encryption, and debugging modules.
- Compare
php.ini, pool-specific settings, Opcache configuration, and environment variables between the failing and test systems. - Confirm that command-line PHP and the web SAPI are not silently using different versions or extension directories.
- Check recent operating-system, PHP, extension, and library upgrades in the package manager history.
Test one extension or package at a time
If the backtrace or controlled comparison points to one extension, update it to a compatible package, disable it on staging, or rebuild it against the active PHP version. Reproduce after each change. Keep a rollback package or snapshot, and never remove a production extension without confirming which application features depend on it.
Capture a core dump when the crash is reproducible
A core file preserves the process state at the instant of the crash. It is often the only way to distinguish WordPress code that triggers a fault from the PHP extension or library that actually dereferences invalid memory.
Prepare Apache and the operating system
Apache’s guidance uses a writable CoreDumpDirectory and a suitable shell core-size limit. A representative Apache configuration is:

ulimit -c unlimitedThe shell limit alone may not be enough. Linux core-dump behavior is also controlled by the operating system’s core-pattern, service manager, container, and security settings. Apache’s directive controls the directory in which httpd changes before dumping core; it does not override every operating-system policy. Verify the resulting path in Apache’s error log and confirm that the service can write there.

Reproduce once and protect the dump
- Confirm the coredump directory has sufficient space and restrictive permissions.
- Restart Apache or the relevant service using the normal production startup path so the limits and configuration actually apply.
- Reproduce the exact request once, recording UTC time and the Apache child PID if it is logged.
- Copy the resulting core file to a controlled diagnostic host or directory; do not make it web-accessible.
- Restore normal dump limits after the diagnostic window if your operational policy requires it.
Core files may include passwords, session material, request bodies, and database data. Treat them as confidential production artifacts.
Generate a useful gdb backtrace
PHP’s crash-debugging procedure requires a non-stripped PHP binary for a useful backtrace. Keep the exact PHP executable, matching debug symbols where available, the core file, and the package build together.
Run gdb against the matching binary
gdb /path/to/php /path/to/core
(gdb) set pagination off
(gdb) thread apply all bt full
(gdb) info sharedlibrary
(gdb) quitThe executable must match the binary that created the dump. If the PHP package is stripped or symbols are missing, the backtrace may contain addresses without function names and will be much less useful. Obtain the distribution’s matching debug-symbol package or a non-stripped build according to its packaging procedure; do not mix symbols from a different PHP release.

What to send to a maintainer or host
- Core-file path, ownership, permissions, size, and UTC crash time.
php -v, SAPI, complete extension list, package build, architecture, and relevant ini or Opcache settings.- Apache version, MPM, loaded modules, virtual-host settings, and PHP-FPM pool configuration.
- Sanitized Apache, PHP-FPM, journal, and WordPress excerpts with synchronized timestamps.
- The exact reproducing request and whether it requires a particular user role, cookie, method, or query parameter.
- The complete
thread apply all bt fulloutput, symbol availability, and any extension or shared-library names shown by gdb.
Do not publish the core or unredacted backtrace in a public forum. Share only the minimum sanitized excerpts needed for diagnosis.

Apache’s PHP guide calls proxy_fcgi with PHP-FPM the preferred Apache 2.4 recipe because it separates the PHP worker from Apache more clearly for diagnosis and supports threaded event or worker MPMs. It describes mod_php as a legacy, non-thread-safe integration tied to the prefork MPM.

When migration is justified
Do not migrate solely because one page crashed. First reproduce under the existing stack and collect logs or a backtrace. If the evidence implicates the embedded integration, or if you need threaded Apache MPM support and clearer process boundaries, test PHP-FPM on staging with identical WordPress files, extensions, and ini values. Compare crash frequency and logs, then schedule production migration with a tested rollback.
When migration will not help
If the backtrace consistently names one incompatible extension or linked library, moving from mod_php to FPM without correcting that component may reproduce the same fault. Update, disable, or rebuild the implicated component and retest first. A different SAPI changes process boundaries; it does not make unsafe native code safe.

Common mistakes and recovery paths
Only raising the WordPress memory limit
A higher PHP or WordPress memory limit may address an out-of-memory fatal error, but it does not explain an Apache signal-11 entry. Restore the original setting if the change produced no improvement and return to synchronized logs.
Displaying debug output to visitors
Leaving WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY enabled can disclose paths, queries, credentials, and user data. Keep display disabled, reproduce on staging, and remove temporary logs or protect them after the test.
Changing several components at once
Updating WordPress, the theme, PHP, and extensions together may make the page work while eliminating the evidence needed to find the cause. Snapshot first, change one layer, and record the result.
Assuming no PHP trace means no PHP fault
Native termination can occur before PHP writes a final message. An empty final section in debug.log is a reason to inspect Apache, PHP-FPM, and the core backtrace—not a reason to clear PHP extensions automatically.
Leaving core dumps exposed
Never place a dump directory below the document root or attach an unredacted dump to a public ticket. Restrict access, transfer it through a controlled channel, and remove it when analysis is complete.
Return to production safely
- Apply the confirmed fix on staging and reproduce the original URL, including its method, parameters, role, and authentication state.
- Run smoke tests for the home page, affected content types, login, administration, media handling, scheduled jobs, and any integration that uses the changed extension or PHP setting.
- Deploy during a maintenance window with a database and file backup, a known-good package set, and a tested rollback procedure.
- Keep Apache, PHP-FPM, and application logs under normal retention and monitoring after deployment; remove temporary verbose debugging and core-dump settings.
- Recheck the original request and review logs for new signal-11 events before declaring the incident closed.
The durable fix is the one supported by evidence: a conflicting callback removed or updated, a compatible PHP and extension combination, a corrected native library, or a deliberately tested PHP-FPM architecture. A page that merely starts responding after an unexplained restart is not a diagnosis.
