When Windows 11 does not detect a second monitor, the cause is usually one of four things: the monitor is on the wrong input, the cable or adapter is faulty, Windows is using the wrong projection mode, or the graphics driver and hardware are not exposing a second display.
Work through these fixes in order. The first checks take only a few minutes and can rule out a disconnected cable before you change drivers or Windows settings.
1. Check the monitor, input source, and cable
Start with the physical connection. Confirm that the second monitor is powered on and that its power light is active. Use the monitor’s buttons to select the input that matches the connected cable, such as HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C.
- Turn the monitor off and back on.
- Unplug the video cable from both the computer and monitor.
- Reconnect it firmly at both ends.
- If possible, test with another compatible cable.
- Try another video output on the computer or dock.
If the monitor works with a replacement cable, the original cable is defective. If the same monitor also fails when connected to another computer, the problem is probably with the monitor, its input, or the cable rather than Windows 11.

Temporarily remove docks and adapters
Disconnect USB-C docks, dongles, HDMI adapters, and other intermediary hardware, then connect the monitor directly to the computer if it has a suitable port. Docks and adapters can introduce compatibility, power, or bandwidth problems.
Do not assume that every USB-C port supports video. USB-C describes the connector shape; the computer must also support a display-output standard through that port. Check the PC manufacturer’s specifications for DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt, or supported docking hardware.
2. Select Extend with Windows + P
Windows may be detecting the monitor but sending output only to the laptop screen. Press Windows + P, then select Extend.

Choose Extend if you want separate windows and applications on each monitor. If the screen is blank and you cannot use the menu normally, press Windows + P, press P repeatedly to cycle through the modes, and press Enter to apply one.
3. Use Detect in Display settings
Windows 11 includes a manual display-detection command. Open it using this path:
Start > Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Detect

Click Detect. If Windows finds the monitor, it should appear in the display layout near the top of the page. Click Identify to show a number on each physical screen. This helps when Windows detects both monitors but places them in an unexpected order.

Detection and usable video output are related but not identical: Windows can list a display while the monitor is still set to the wrong input or receiving an unsupported signal.
4. Reset the graphics driver
A temporary graphics-driver failure can prevent Windows from initializing an external display. Press:
Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B
The screen may flicker briefly, and Windows may produce a beep. This shortcut resets the graphics driver without restarting the computer. Check whether the second monitor appears afterward.
If nothing changes, restart Windows. Save your work first, because a full restart is more effective than repeatedly pressing the shortcut when the driver or display connection is stuck.

Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates
Install available updates and restart if Windows requests it. If the restart options appear, choose Update and restart rather than postponing the restart.
If Windows Update itself is failing, open the Get Help app and search for the Windows Update troubleshooter. Microsoft’s current Windows 11 troubleshooting flow uses Get Help for automated troubleshooting. After the update problem is resolved, check for updates again and restart the PC.
6. Roll back the display driver
If the second monitor stopped working immediately after a Windows or graphics-driver update, restore the previous driver version:
- Search Windows for Device Manager and open it.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver.
- Restart the computer.
The rollback button may be unavailable if Windows has no previous driver to restore. You may also need administrator permission. If the problem began after a recent driver installation and rollback is available, this is usually safer than immediately removing the driver.
7. Reinstall the display adapter driver
A damaged or incomplete display-driver installation can stop Windows 11 from recognizing an external screen. Reinstall the adapter from Device Manager:

- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter and select Uninstall device.
- If shown, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device, then click Uninstall.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Device Manager again and expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the adapter, select Update driver, and choose Search automatically for drivers.
The option to remove the driver package may not appear during a normal startup; Microsoft notes that it may be available after starting the PC in Safe Mode. If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, download the Windows 11 driver from the computer manufacturer or graphics-card manufacturer. For laptops, start with the laptop manufacturer’s driver because it may include device-specific display and power-management settings.

8. Confirm that the computer supports two independent displays
Not every computer, video port, dock, or adapter can drive two separate monitors. Check the graphics adapter and computer specifications for the maximum number of supported displays.

| USB-C connection | Confirm that the specific USB-C port supports video output; not all USB-C ports do. |
| Docking station | Check dock compatibility, required drivers, power, and the number and type of supported displays. |
| HDMI or DisplayPort splitter | A normal splitter duplicates one signal. It does not create two independent Windows displays. |
If one monitor works but the second never appears, the likely causes include a graphics adapter output limit, an incompatible dock, insufficient dock bandwidth, or a splitter that only duplicates the image. Use separate supported outputs or a dock explicitly designed for multiple displays.

When the monitor appears under Settings > System > Display but shows no picture, detection is no longer the main problem. Check these settings:
- Press Windows + P and select Extend.
- Use the monitor’s controls to select the correct input.
- In Display settings, select the second monitor and temporarily choose a lower resolution or refresh rate.
- Try another cable or output port.
- Turn off the monitor, unplug it for about 30 seconds, reconnect it, and turn it on.
A monitor may remain blank when it receives a resolution or refresh rate that it cannot display. Once a picture returns, you can increase the resolution or refresh rate gradually.
For a wireless display
If the second screen is wireless rather than connected by HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C, press Windows + K to open the Windows 11 Cast panel, then select the wireless display adapter.

You can also open Start > Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Connect. Make sure wireless display is enabled on the television or adapter, both devices are within range, and the computer supports the required wireless-display technology.
When the problem is probably hardware
The fault is more likely hardware than Windows if:
- The monitor shows “No signal” with multiple known-good cables.
- The monitor fails with another computer.
- The computer’s video port is physically damaged or loose.
- The display works when connected directly but fails through a particular dock or adapter.
- The graphics adapter specification does not support two independent displays.
Testing one component at a time is the quickest way to isolate the failure: test the monitor, cable, computer port, adapter, and dock separately rather than changing all of them at once.

Why is my second monitor not detected in Windows 11?
The usual causes are an incorrect monitor input, loose or faulty cable, incompatible dock or adapter, incorrect projection mode, graphics-driver failure, pending updates, or hardware that does not support two independent displays.
How do I force Windows 11 to detect a second monitor?
Open Start > Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays and select Detect. Also press Windows + P and choose Extend. If detection still fails, reset the graphics driver with Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B.
Why does my HDMI splitter show the same image on both monitors?
A standard HDMI splitter duplicates one video signal. It cannot extend the Windows desktop as two independent displays. Use separate supported video outputs or a compatible multi-monitor dock instead.
Can any USB-C port connect a second monitor?
No. The USB-C connector does not guarantee video output. The specific port must support a display standard such as DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt, or you must use a compatible USB display adapter.
What should I do if Roll Back Driver is greyed out?
Windows has no previous driver version available to restore, so the rollback option is disabled. Try installing the latest compatible driver from the computer or graphics-adapter manufacturer instead.
