Screen flickering usually comes from one of four places: the graphics driver, an incompatible application, an unstable display setting, or the physical connection between the computer and monitor. The quickest way to narrow it down is to compare the flickering with Task Manager.
Before changing drivers or uninstalling software, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. Windows resets the graphics driver; you may hear a beep or see a brief flash. If the problem remains, use the tests below rather than applying registry tweaks at random.
1. Use Task Manager to identify the likely cause
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, then select Task Manager. You can also press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Watch Task Manager while the rest of the desktop flickers.
| What flickers? | Likely cause | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Task Manager and the rest of the screen | Display-driver problem | Roll back, update, or reinstall the graphics driver |
| Everything except Task Manager | Incompatible application | Update, uninstall, or isolate the application |
| Only an external monitor | Cable, dock, adapter, monitor, port, or monitor setting | Test the physical signal path |
| Only the laptop’s built-in panel | Internal display cable, panel, hinge, or laptop graphics path | Test an external monitor and inspect for hardware symptoms |
This test is not perfect, but it prevents a common mistake: replacing a working monitor when the actual fault is a driver or application.

Roll back a recently updated driver
If flickering began immediately after a Windows or graphics-driver update, restore the previous driver:
- Search for and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, confirm, and restart.
The button is unavailable if Windows has no previous driver to restore. On a laptop with hybrid graphics, check every adapter listed under Display adapters.
Update the driver
In Device Manager, right-click the adapter, select Update driver, then choose Search automatically for drivers. Also check the computer manufacturer’s support page. A Dell, Lenovo, HP, ASUS, Acer, or Microsoft Surface laptop may require an OEM driver that handles power management and hybrid graphics correctly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn Windows 11, check Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates. In Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View optional updates, when that option is available.
Uninstall and reinstall the adapter
- Open Device Manager > Display adapters.
- Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
- On the Driver tab, select Uninstall Device.
- If shown, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Select Uninstall, then restart.
Windows should reinstall a display driver during startup. If the checkbox is missing during a normal boot, Microsoft recommends using Safe Mode for this procedure. The generic driver restored by Windows may provide basic video but not the manufacturer’s complete feature set, so install the correct OEM or GPU-vendor driver afterward.
3. Find and remove an incompatible application
If Task Manager stays stable while the rest of the desktop flickers, concentrate on software that draws over other windows or uses graphics acceleration. Examples include screen-recording tools, system overlays, browser windows, chat applications, game launchers, and recently installed utilities.
First update the suspected application. Microsoft Store applications can be updated in the Microsoft Store; other programs should be updated through their publisher’s website.

Remove one application at a time, restart, and test. Uninstalling several programs together makes it impossible to identify the actual cause.
Use a clean boot when the application is unclear
A clean boot disables third-party services and startup programs without removing them:
- Sign in with an administrator account and search for
msconfig. - Open System Configuration and select the Services tab.
- Check Hide all Microsoft services.
- Select Disable all, then select Apply.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
- In Startup apps (or Startup in some Windows 10 builds), disable each enabled third-party item.
- Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart.
If flickering stops, re-enable services and startup items in groups until the conflict returns. Restore normal startup afterward by opening msconfig, selecting Normal startup on the General tab, re-enabling the items you need, and restarting.
4. Test the refresh rate, HDR, and variable refresh
An unsupported or unstable combination of resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and variable refresh can cause flashing, particularly with gaming monitors, laptops, docks, and high-refresh displays.
In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. In Windows 10, open Start > Settings > System > Display, select Advanced display settings, and then choose Display adapter properties if necessary.
- Select the affected display when more than one monitor is connected.
- Choose a conservative supported rate, such as the display’s native resolution at 60 Hz.
- Apply the setting and test for several minutes.
- If stable, increase the refresh rate one step at a time.
In Windows 11, Dynamic Refresh Rate is under Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Turn it off temporarily if the panel flickers when switching between battery and AC power or between applications.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →5. Isolate an external monitor, dock, or USB-C connection
Do not troubleshoot Windows alone when an external display is involved. A failing cable or dock can look exactly like a driver problem.
- Disconnect the dock, USB-C hub, dongle, splitter, and other display accessories.
- Connect the monitor directly to the computer.
- Reseat both ends of the video cable.
- Try a different cable of the required specification.
- Try another video output on the computer.
- Test the monitor with another computer.
- If possible, test another monitor on the affected PC.
Every USB-C port does not support video output. The computer, cable, and display must support the required DisplayPort Alternate Mode or another compatible video mode. A dock can also introduce bandwidth, firmware, power, or compatibility problems.
| Test result | Most likely direction |
|---|---|
| The same monitor flickers with another computer | Monitor or cable |
| Only one monitor flickers on this PC | Monitor-specific setting, port, cable, dock, or adapter |
| Every monitor flickers on this PC | Driver, GPU, dock, power delivery, or system hardware |
| External monitor is stable but the laptop panel flickers | Internal panel, display cable, hinge area, or laptop panel circuitry |
6. Start Windows in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads only essential drivers and services. If the flickering disappears there, a normal-mode driver, startup program, or service is more likely than a basic panel fault.
In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. In Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery, find Advanced startup, and select Restart now.
After the recovery screen appears, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
If the PC keeps starting in Safe Mode, press Windows + R, enter msconfig, open the Boot tab, clear Safe boot, select OK, and restart.

7. Repair corrupted Windows components
Run these commands after driver, application, and display-connection tests, particularly if Windows itself is unstable or other system components are failing.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Leave the window open until verification reaches 100%, then restart Windows. DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source. Do not use a random folder with the /Source option; it must contain a valid matching Windows repair source.

8. Undo a recently installed Windows update
If the flicker began immediately after an update and driver rollback did not help, Windows 11 provides Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates. Windows 10 uses Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history > Uninstall updates.
Select the relevant update and choose Uninstall. Not every update can be removed, and uninstalling a security update creates a security risk. Use this step when the timing is clear, then check for a corrected driver or Windows update.
If Windows will not boot normally, enter Windows Recovery Environment and select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates, followed by the applicable quality or feature update option.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the problem is probably hardware
Hardware becomes more likely when flickering appears before Windows loads, continues in the firmware or boot screen, follows a monitor or cable to another computer, changes when a laptop lid moves, or occurs only on one physical panel. Lines, colored blocks, a burning smell, unusual heat, or a display that repeatedly disconnects also warrant stopping the test and contacting the manufacturer or a repair service.
For a laptop, avoid repeatedly flexing the lid to reproduce the fault. For a desktop, power it off before reseating cables or opening the case, and use the manufacturer’s instructions for GPU and power connections.

Advice that is often overstated
- “Run DDU first.” Display Driver Uninstaller is third-party software, not Microsoft’s first-line repair. Try rollback, update, or Device Manager removal first.
- “Disable MPO in the Registry.” This is an unofficial workaround, not a universal Windows fix. Registry changes can create new problems and complicate support.
- “Disable hardware acceleration everywhere.” It may help one application, but it is not a system-wide solution and can reduce performance.
- “Always install the newest driver.” The newest package may be wrong for an OEM laptop. A rollback can be the correct fix when the problem follows an update.
- “The monitor is defective.” Task Manager behavior and cross-device testing should come before that conclusion.
- “Perform a clean Windows installation.” Reserve it for cases where supported driver, application, settings, repair, and hardware tests have failed.
FAQ
Why does my screen flicker but Task Manager does not?
That result points more strongly to an incompatible application than to the display driver. Update or uninstall recently installed programs, especially overlays, screen recorders, browsers, game utilities, and other software that draws over windows. A clean boot can identify a background service when the application is not obvious.
What does Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B do?
It resets the graphics driver without restarting Windows. The display may flash or briefly go black, and a beep may occur. It can recover a temporary driver failure, but recurring flickering still requires driver, application, display-setting, or hardware testing.
Why does my monitor flicker only through a dock?
The dock, USB-C adapter, cable, power delivery, bandwidth, or video compatibility may be at fault. Connect the monitor directly to the PC, try another cable and port, and confirm that the USB-C port supports video output. If direct connection is stable, troubleshoot or replace the dock.
Should I change the refresh rate to 60 Hz?
Testing the native resolution at 60 Hz is a useful diagnostic step, not a guaranteed permanent fix. If flickering stops, the original refresh-rate, HDR, VRR, cable, dock, or monitor combination may be unstable. Increase the rate gradually after stability returns.
Can a Windows update cause screen flickering?
Yes. A Windows update can install or interact with a display driver, application, or display feature. If the timing is immediate, roll back the display driver first. You can also review and uninstall the relevant update, although security updates should not be removed casually.
Does screen flickering mean my graphics card is failing?
Not necessarily. Drivers, applications, refresh settings, cables, docks, and monitors are common causes. A hardware fault becomes more likely if the problem appears before Windows starts, affects multiple monitors and cables, shows artifacts, or continues on another operating system or computer.
The Bottom Line
Start with the Task Manager comparison, then follow the result: repair the display driver if Task Manager flickers, isolate applications if it does not, and test cables, docks, ports, and monitors when an external display is involved. Refresh-rate, HDR, Safe Mode, DISM, and update rollback are follow-up tests—not reasons to jump immediately to registry edits or a clean installation.
