Most controller failures in classic Square Enix PC ports come from using the wrong input API for the Windows build or from Steam not passing controller input while the game is unfocused. Most apparent save losses have a different cause: cloud-sync limits between mobile operating systems, or launching a freshly reinstalled copy offline before it can update. Identify the exact port first, protect the current save with both manual and automatic saves, then follow the platform-specific fix below.
Start by identifying the port, operating system, and input path
“Classic Square Enix RPG port” covers several releases of the same or related games. A Steam build and a Windows 10/11 build can have different controller requirements, while Android and iPhone editions use separate cloud-save paths. Write down the storefront, operating system, game version shown on its title or settings screen, and whether the game is currently online before changing anything.

Do not assume that two ports share a save-folder location, remapping screen, patch behavior, or file format. The official support material does not establish one universal directory for every classic port, so use the support page for the individual title before moving, replacing, or deleting files.

Use the API required by your Windows build
XInput and DirectInput are two different ways for Windows games to receive gamepad signals. XInput is the expected path for the Windows 10/11 edition. A controller that works in another older PC game through DirectInput can therefore remain invisible in this port even though Windows detects it.

- Close the RPG and connect an XInput-compatible USB gamepad directly to the PC rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Wait for Windows to finish installing or recognizing the device, then open the game again.
- Test the controller in a simple menu before changing any remapping or overlay settings.
- If the same pad works on Steam but not in the Windows 10/11 build, treat the API mismatch as the leading explanation rather than a failed save or a damaged game installation.
The Steam edition is more permissive because Square Enix lists both DirectInput and XInput compatibility. That does not make every controller configuration interchangeable: a controller can still be affected by Steam’s focus and desktop-input settings.
Restore input when the game is unfocused
Steam documents a specific symptom: a controller may stop controlling the game while it is running in the background. Square Enix’s remedy is to enable the setting that lets the controller operate as PC controls through the Steam Desktop Layout.
- Exit to the Steam client or leave it open beside the game.
- Open Steam’s Controller Settings.
- Open the Desktop Layout configuration.
- Enable the option that allows the controller to be used for PC controls.
- Return to the RPG, click the game window once so it has focus, and test navigation.
This setting is especially relevant if the controller works in the title screen but stops after an Alt-Tab, a notification, a launcher window, or a display-mode change. It is not a save-repair feature; it only changes how Steam passes input while the game is not the active window.
Separate an input problem from a game problem
- Test the game with the keyboard. If keyboard commands work while the pad does not, concentrate on API and Steam input handling.
- Test the same pad in another game that uses the same API. Failure there points to the controller, cable, USB port, or driver rather than this RPG.
- Disconnect additional gamepads, flight sticks, virtual controllers, and remapping utilities temporarily. Multiple devices can make the first device in the input list different from the one you expect.
- Reconnect the controller after the game has started only if the title supports hot-plugging; otherwise close the game, connect the pad, and relaunch.
- Keep the game window focused while diagnosing. If input returns only when focused, use the Desktop Layout fix instead of repeatedly reinstalling.
Avoid changing several input layers at once. If you enable a third-party mapper, alter Steam’s layout, and switch controller modes simultaneously, you lose the ability to tell which change solved or caused the symptom.

Protect your save before troubleshooting
Save protection comes before controller experiments, updates, or reinstalls. A controller failure does not necessarily mean the save is damaged, and an unnecessary reinstall can create a second problem if the new copy is started offline.
Create both kinds of save the game provides
- Use the game’s manual save command through System Settings and save to a fresh slot rather than overwriting your only slot.
- After a quest or other event that normally triggers an automatic save, wait for the save indicator or completion message to finish before closing the game.
- Keep at least one older manual slot. It gives you a fallback if the newest slot will not load after an interruption.
- Close the game normally after saving. Do not terminate it while an automatic save is in progress.
Automatic saves occur at intervals such as quest completion, while manual saving is available from System Settings. The exact timing and number of slots differ by title, so the presence of an auto-save does not eliminate the need for a deliberate manual copy.
Do not guess a universal save-folder path
Classic ports do not share one published save directory. A path that is correct for one game, operating system, or storefront can be wrong for another. Before copying or deleting files, open the support article for the exact title and edition. If the article does not document a path, leave the existing files in place and use the in-game save system and official support channel rather than relying on an internet list that may belong to a different port.
Understand mobile cloud-save limits
Square Enix’s CLOUD SYNC is limited by mobile operating system. A cloud transfer can move a save from one Android device to another Android device, or from one iPhone to another iPhone. Android-to-iPhone and iPhone-to-Android transfers are incompatible, as are transfers to other platforms.

Before replacing a phone, open the game on the original device while it still contains the latest save and complete the title’s cloud-sync action. On the replacement device, use the same operating-system family and verify that the cloud copy has finished downloading before starting a new game. Starting a new game cannot convert an incompatible Android/iPhone transfer.
Recover a save that disappeared after reinstalling
If a save was present before a reinstall but is unavailable immediately afterward, first consider whether the new installation was launched offline. Square Enix’s official remedy for this symptom is to reconnect online and update the game before attempting to load the save.
- Close the game without creating a new save in the replacement installation.
- Reconnect the PC or mobile device to the internet.
- Launch the storefront or game updater and let the title install every available update.
- Start the game only after the update completes.
- Open the load screen and check for the original slots.
- If the slots remain unavailable, stop experimenting with files and consult the support article for that exact title and edition.
The official instruction is direct: “To load your save data, please connect online and update the game.” This is an update-and-authentication remedy, not proof that every missing save can be reconstructed from a local folder. Do not delete the old installation or replace files until the title-specific instructions tell you which files are safe to handle.
When a save will not load
First distinguish a missing save from an unreadable save
- Missing list: no expected slot appears at all. Check the online-update step, the operating-system cloud limitation, and whether you opened the same port and user profile.
- Unreadable slot: the slot appears but fails during loading. Preserve every other slot, avoid overwriting it, and record the exact error or point at which loading stops.
- New-game-only list: the game opens normally but shows no old progress. This commonly follows an offline first launch after reinstall; update online before making another save.
Use a manual save in a separate slot only after the original slots are visible. A new save can be useful for testing controller input, but it should not replace the only copy of the older progress.

Record details support can use
Write down the title, edition, operating system, storefront, game version, device model when applicable, whether the reinstall was offline, and whether cloud sync was used. Note whether the problem affects every slot or only one. This information prevents support from giving instructions for a different port and makes it clear whether the issue is compatibility, updating, or a single damaged slot.
Stop crashes and persistent controller failures
Once the API, focus state, and save protection steps are complete, use Square Enix’s PC crash sequence. It applies when the game still crashes or the controller remains unusable after the basic checks.
- Confirm that the game itself is fully updated.
- Update the PC’s graphics drivers from the GPU manufacturer’s official channel.
- Restart the computer to clear a stuck driver, overlay, or input process.
- Try the game again with only the required controller connected and with unnecessary overlays or remappers closed.
- Reinstall the game if the updated installation still crashes or fails to start.
- If the failure continues, submit a Square Enix support request with an MSInfo report and a DxDiag report.
MSInfo describes the Windows configuration and installed software; DxDiag records DirectX, display, and driver details. Attach the reports through the support form rather than posting them publicly, because diagnostic files can contain system and hardware information. Include the time of the crash, the exact port, and whether the failure occurs before or after loading a save.
Compare the troubleshooting paths by port

Use this sequence when several symptoms appear together, such as a controller that fails and a save that is not visible after reinstalling:

- Identify the exact port, operating system, storefront, and online/offline state.
- Do not create a replacement save until you have protected the existing one with a manual save and completed any pending automatic save.
- For Windows 10/11, connect an XInput pad; for Steam, remember that both XInput and DirectInput are supported.
- If the game is unfocused, enable Steam’s Desktop Layout controller setting and return focus to the game.
- For mobile, keep transfers within Android-to-Android or iPhone-to-iPhone boundaries.
- After an offline reinstall, reconnect and update before opening the load screen.
- Only after those checks, update graphics drivers, restart, and reinstall for persistent crashes.
- Escalate with MSInfo and DxDiag when the documented sequence does not resolve a PC failure.
This order minimizes irreversible actions. It also keeps input diagnosis separate from save diagnosis, so a working keyboard, a detected controller, and a visible save slot each provide useful evidence instead of becoming confused by simultaneous changes.
Common mistakes that make recovery harder
- Using a DirectInput-only pad on the Windows 10/11 build: Windows may see the device, but the game still requires XInput.
- Assuming focus does not matter: Steam can stop passing control while the game runs in the background until Desktop Layout is enabled.
- Reinstalling and launching offline: the save may not load until the installation is connected and updated.
- Moving a mobile cloud save across operating systems: Android and iPhone cloud paths are not interchangeable.
- Deleting a folder found in a generic guide: no single save directory is established for all classic Square Enix ports.
- Overwriting the only manual slot: keep an older slot and let automatic saves finish before closing.
- Sending an incomplete crash report: support needs the game version and symptom details together with MSInfo and DxDiag to investigate a PC failure efficiently.
When to contact Square Enix support
Contact support after the game is current, the graphics driver is current, the computer has been restarted, and a reinstall has not solved the crash or controller failure. For a save issue, contact support after the online update has completed and you have confirmed that the device and edition match the original save. Include the exact title and port, operating system, storefront, version, controller API, whether the game was unfocused, and the steps that reproduce the problem. For PC crashes, attach MSInfo and DxDiag as requested by the support process.
That record is more useful than a claim that “the game lost my save” or “the controller does not work,” because it identifies whether the case concerns an API requirement, Steam background input, a platform-limited cloud transfer, an offline reinstall, or a broader installation failure.
