A Satisfactory version-mismatch error means the game client and dedicated server are running incompatible builds or release branches. Update the exact server installation you launch with SteamCMD, make sure both sides use the same branch, then restart the server and client. Steam and Epic copies can connect to the same dedicated server; the store where the game was purchased is not the deciding factor.
If the error remains after a clean update, the most common explanations are that SteamCMD updated a different directory, the server is still running an old process, or the client and server are on different branches. If the versions match but the server cannot be found or reached, troubleshoot networking separately.
What a Satisfactory version mismatch actually means
The dedicated server and the client negotiate a compatible game build when you connect. A mismatch occurs when one endpoint has files from a different release or branch. The two sides do not have to come from the same store: the official Satisfactory Wiki states that clients from both the Epic and Steam game stores can connect to dedicated servers regardless of where the server binaries were downloaded, provided the builds are compatible.
That distinction matters when diagnosing the error. Changing from Steam to Epic, or vice versa, will not by itself repair an out-of-date server. Compare the actual client build and the server build, and check whether either side is using the Experimental branch.

Use this repair order
Follow the steps in order. Updating files while an old server process is still running can leave files locked or cause you to restart the unchanged installation.
1. Stop the dedicated server cleanly
Shut down the Satisfactory dedicated-server process before running SteamCMD. Stop the Windows service, systemd unit, container, scheduled task, or foreground process that launches it, depending on how you administer the host. Confirm that the process has actually exited before updating files.
SteamCMD error 0x606 is associated with files being held open by another process. If the server appears stopped but SteamCMD still reports locked files, reboot the host and run the update again. Do not delete or overwrite files to work around a lock while the server may still be using them.
2. Update the installation that is really launched
Valve identifies SteamCMD as the standard tool for installing and updating standalone dedicated servers. Open a shell in the SteamCMD location and run the update against the directory used by your service or launch script:

steamcmd +force_install_dir <game_server_directory> +login anonymous +app_update 1690800 validate +quitReplace <game_server_directory> with the server’s actual installation directory. The dedicated-server app ID is 1690800. The validate argument asks SteamCMD to check the installed files as part of the update.
The important detail is the path, not merely whether SteamCMD reports a successful download. A machine can contain several Satisfactory server directories, and a service can launch one while SteamCMD updates another. Identify the path in the command, service definition, container volume, or batch file that starts the live server, then use that same path with +force_install_dir.
3. Put both endpoints on the same release branch
The client and server must use compatible builds and the same release branch. If the client is on the mainline release, update the server without a beta branch. If the client is on Experimental, update the server with the Experimental branch selected:
steamcmd +force_install_dir <game_server_directory> +login anonymous +app_update 1690800 -beta experimental validate +quitUse the branch option only when the client is also on Experimental. Conversely, an Experimental server will not become compatible with a mainline client simply because both were updated on the same day. Record the branch on both sides before changing anything, and avoid assuming that “latest” means the same release channel.

4. Restart the server and the client
After SteamCMD finishes, start the server from the same installation you updated. Fully exit and restart the game client rather than relying on a session that was already running. Then try the connection again.
This restart sequence matters because a still-running server keeps its old executable and libraries in memory, while a client that was open during an update can continue using its previous state. Updating files alone does not replace the binaries already loaded by either process.

When the mismatch survives a successful SteamCMD update
Check for a path mismatch
Verify the path character by character. A community troubleshooting report described a missing leading slash in force_install_dir that caused SteamCMD to update a different directory from the one being launched. Treat that report as an anecdotal diagnostic example, not as a universal cause, but inspect the path yourself.
- Compare the directory in
force_install_dirwith the executable path in the server’s start command. - Check service files, scheduled tasks, Docker or other container volume mappings, and shell scripts for a second path.
- Look for duplicate Satisfactory server folders created by an earlier manual install or migration.
- After updating, confirm that the process start command points to the files whose timestamps or sizes changed.
If you correct the path, stop the old process first, update the corrected directory, and restart from that directory. Running SteamCMD again without changing the launch target will not fix a service that still starts the other copy.

Confirm the branch on both sides again
Branch mistakes can look like ordinary version drift. Check the game client’s selected release channel and the server update command. A client moved to Experimental requires the -beta experimental update; a mainline client requires the mainline server files. Do not mix a branch-specific server with a client on the other branch.

Make sure the old server process is gone
If SteamCMD completed but the server still presents the previous build, inspect the running processes and service manager. A second instance may have remained active after the visible console closed, or an automatic restart may have launched the old copy before the update finished. Stop every instance, update once, and start only the intended service.
How to tell a version problem from a network problem
A matching build does not guarantee that you can discover or join the server. Version negotiation and network reachability are separate checks. If the server is absent from the browser, times out, or refuses a connection after the versions align, investigate the listener and network path instead of repeatedly updating the files.
Test whether the endpoint responds
From a machine that should be able to reach the host, test the server endpoint with:

curl -k https://ip:portReplace ip and port with the address and port you are testing. The -k option tells curl not to reject a certificate it cannot verify; this checks whether something responds at the endpoint, not whether the game protocol is valid.

Confirm that the dedicated-server process is listening on the expected port and interface. Then check the operating-system firewall and any upstream firewall. A process that is running but bound only to a local interface will not accept connections from outside the host.
Check forwarding and provider rules
For a server behind a router, verify that the required port is forwarded to the correct internal host. Cloud or managed environments may also have provider-level security rules. These failures do not change the game build, so a successful SteamCMD update cannot resolve them.
Interpret the result
- If the client reports an explicit version mismatch immediately, return to the build, branch, process, and installation-path checks.
- If the server is not listed or the endpoint does not respond, focus on the listener, firewall, forwarding, and service state.
- If the endpoint responds but the game still cannot join, verify that the address and port belong to the updated server instance and that no second service is answering there.
Self-hosting and managed hosting: what changes
You can administer the dedicated server yourself or use a managed hosting provider. The mismatch fix is still based on compatible client and server builds, but the person responsible for each step changes.
Self-hosting
- You control the server files, SteamCMD arguments, release branch, launch path, and restart timing.
- You can inspect logs, process lists, service definitions, and port bindings directly.
- You are responsible for stopping the server before updates, applying updates, restarting both endpoints, and configuring firewalls and port forwarding.
- You must ensure that the host operating system and hardware can run the dedicated server alongside its other workloads.
Managed hosting
- The provider may perform updates and restarts, but you need to know which branch and server version its panel selects.
- Log access, custom SteamCMD options, port configuration, and file access vary by provider.
- Some providers hide or limit the controls needed to diagnose a mismatch, which can make it harder to verify the live path or branch.
- Recurring cost and provider-specific limitations replace much of the operating-system and network administration work.
Before choosing a managed service, ask whether you can select the mainline or Experimental branch, view complete server logs, restart the actual instance, and configure or inspect the required ports. If those controls are unavailable, a version error may require a provider support ticket rather than a local SteamCMD repair.

Prevent the next mismatch
- Keep one documented server installation path and use it consistently in the service definition and SteamCMD command.
- Record whether the client is on mainline or Experimental before every update.
- Stop the dedicated server before updating; never rely on an in-place overwrite while it is running.
- Use app ID
1690800and includevalidatein the update command. - Restart the server and fully restart the client after the update.
- If the server is unreachable after versions align, test the listener and network path instead of repeating the same file update.
Quick decision path
Start with the exact error. For a direct version-mismatch message, stop the server, update the live installation, match the branch, and restart both endpoints. For error 0x606, clear the file lock by stopping the process or rebooting. For a successful update followed by the same mismatch, audit the installation path and running process. For a server that does not appear or accept connections despite matching versions, move to listener, firewall, forwarding, and service diagnostics.
