If the Samsung DeX taskbar has vanished, first check its visibility setting: while DeX is running, open Settings > Samsung DeX and make sure the taskbar is not configured to hide. The exact wording and location can vary with the Galaxy model and One UI release.
Before changing anything else, identify which taskbar you mean. The bar along the bottom of the DeX desktop is different from the Samsung DeX icon in the Windows taskbar. Missing open-app icons, pinned shortcuts, status controls, and a Windows app icon have different causes and different fixes.
Identify which DeX taskbar item disappeared
Samsung uses “taskbar” for the control strip in the DeX desktop. It normally shows controls for open applications, along with other shortcuts and status or notification controls that depend on the device and software version. A separate Samsung DeX application runs on Windows when you use DeX for PC. Its Windows taskbar icon can disappear even when the DeX desktop itself is working normally.

This distinction prevents a common mistake: changing display or taskbar settings in DeX cannot restore an application icon that belongs to Windows, and reinstalling the PC application will not unhide a bar inside the DeX desktop.

Restore a hidden taskbar inside Samsung DeX
- Enter DeX. Connect to the display or start DeX on the Galaxy device or tablet, then wait until the DeX desktop is visible.
- Open DeX settings. Select the DeX desktop’s Settings app and open Samsung DeX. Depending on the release, you may reach the same area through the notification or quick-settings controls before opening Settings.
- Find the taskbar visibility control. Samsung’s DeX options include a setting that can hide the taskbar. Turn visibility on, or disable an option described as hiding the taskbar automatically. Labels can differ by model, region, and One UI version.
- Return to the desktop. Close Settings and check the edge of the DeX desktop where the bar normally appears. Move the pointer to the edge if your version uses an auto-hide behavior.
- Test an open application. Launch an app, minimize it, and select it again from the taskbar. Samsung describes open apps as appearing there and being selectable for reopening or management.
If the bar returns but one or two controls are still absent, the visibility setting was only part of the issue. Continue with the item-specific checks below rather than repeatedly toggling the same option.
When only app icons or controls are missing
Open-app icons
DeX taskbar entries for open applications represent running windows; they are not necessarily a permanent list of every installed app. Open the application from the DeX app launcher, verify that its window is active, and then minimize or switch away from it. If other open apps appear while one does not, record the app name, whether it is a phone or tablet version, and the One UI release. Samsung’s general guide does not promise that every application exposes identical taskbar behavior.
Pinned shortcuts
A shortcut that was present on one device or software release may not be offered in the same place on another. Check the taskbar’s available context or customization controls and compare them with the options listed in your DeX settings. Do not assume that a missing shortcut means the entire taskbar is malfunctioning: Samsung does not specify a universal button set for every Galaxy model.

Status, notification, and system controls
The right side of the bar can change with screen size, orientation, connected-display mode, and One UI version. If the app portion is visible but status or notification controls are not, inspect the display-specific settings and current DeX mode before attempting a reset. Capture a screenshot showing the full desktop, because a cropped image of the app area will not show whether the controls are simply off-screen.
Understand One UI 8.0 behavior before treating it as a fault
Samsung documents two One UI 8.0 details that can look unusual but are not, by themselves, evidence of a broken taskbar.
Duplicate app entries can be normal
On One UI 8.0, the same application can appear more than once in the Samsung DeX taskbar. Samsung’s wording is explicit: “If you notice multiple instances of the same app appearing in the Samsung DeX taskbar, it is normal behavior.” This explains duplicate entries only. It does not establish that a genuinely missing app, status control, or system button is expected.

Theming changes app icons only in part of the interface
Samsung also says that DeX themes on One UI 8.0 have partial support: they affect app icons rather than recoloring or replacing the entire DeX system interface. A changed icon shape or color after applying a theme is therefore different from an icon that has disappeared. If the taskbar itself, its system controls, or its layout is missing, continue with the visibility and display checks.

Open the Galaxy device’s software-information screen and note the Android and One UI versions before comparing screenshots or instructions. Menus can move between releases. A workaround that matches an older One UI build may not apply to One UI 8.0, while a One UI 8 behavior should not be used to explain a device running an earlier release.
Check the connected display and DeX mode
External-display DeX can behave differently from DeX running directly on a phone or tablet. Samsung’s One UI 8.0 documentation says that external-display position, resolution, and rotation settings are stored separately for each connected display. Moving from a TV to a monitor, or from one monitor to another, can therefore produce a different-looking layout without changing the global taskbar preference.

- Connect the Galaxy device to the display on which the taskbar problem occurs.
- Open Settings > Samsung DeX while that display is active.
- Review the display position, resolution, and rotation values shown for the current connection.
- Check the taskbar visibility option again and inspect the desktop at the selected orientation and resolution.
- If your device offers both Classic and New DeX modes, note which mode is active and reproduce the symptom in that mode only. Do not compare controls from one mode with screenshots of the other.
These checks matter when the bar appears on one screen but not another, or when controls seem to move after changing orientation. They do not prove that every missing control is caused by a display profile; they simply rule out a per-display layout mismatch.
Fix a missing Samsung DeX icon in the Windows taskbar
If the missing symbol is on a Windows computer, use the DeX-for-PC checks rather than the on-device taskbar setting. Samsung’s PC guidance separates application status, connection, updates, and device compatibility.

Open Samsung DeX on Windows from the Start menu or installed-app list. A closed application cannot show its normal taskbar presence.
- For a wired connection, reconnect USB. Disconnect the cable at the computer or Galaxy device, wait briefly, and reconnect it. Use the same physical connection you normally use for DeX and watch for the Windows connection prompt.
- For wireless DeX, check the network. The Galaxy device and PC must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. A guest network, VPN, or separate wireless band that isolates devices can prevent discovery even though both devices show Wi-Fi access.
- Select the PC connection mode on the Galaxy device. When the DeX connection choices appear, choose the option for DeX on PC rather than an external-display mode.
- Check for an application update. Open the installed DeX application’s update or about screen, and install an available update through the supported Windows update channel. Restart the application after updating.
- Verify compatibility. Samsung says DeX for PC is unsupported on certain newer Galaxy devices and on models updated to One UI 7 or later. The supported-device list can change, so check Samsung’s current compatibility information for the exact model and software build before troubleshooting an icon that cannot be provided on that setup.
A Windows taskbar icon can also be hidden by Windows taskbar settings even when the DeX application is running. First establish that the Samsung application opens and can connect; only then inspect Windows’ own taskbar overflow or pinned-app settings. Those Windows controls are separate from Samsung DeX’s desktop taskbar visibility option.

Compare the relevant DeX setups

What not to assume, and why
- Do not treat duplicate entries as missing-icon proof. One UI 8.0 can display multiple instances of one app by design.
- Do not treat a theme change as a full-interface change. Samsung describes partial theme support for app icons, not the complete DeX system interface.
- Do not assume every button belongs on every taskbar. Samsung’s reviewed guidance does not define one universal set of controls for all devices and versions.
- Do not buy a cable, dock, mouse, or keyboard as a first fix. The documented remedy for a hidden bar is a visibility setting, and the PC remedy is an application, connection, update, or compatibility check. Accessories are not established as a restoration method.
- Do not clear caches, factory-reset the device, or install utilities without model-specific instructions. Samsung’s general guidance does not present those actions as a universal fix for a DeX taskbar that remains absent.
When the taskbar is still incomplete
After confirming visibility, identifying the correct taskbar, checking the active display, and accounting for One UI behavior, stop changing unrelated settings. The remaining symptom may depend on a specific Galaxy model, software build, DeX mode, display, or application.
Prepare the following information for Samsung Support or Samsung Members:
- Galaxy model and country or region of purchase.
- Android and One UI version, including the full build number if available.
- Whether the issue occurs in Classic DeX, New DeX, or the only mode offered on your device.
- Whether DeX is running on the device screen, an external display, or Windows.
- External display model, connection method, resolution, and rotation when applicable.
- The exact items missing: entire bar, open-app icon, pinned shortcut, status control, notification control, or Windows DeX icon.
- What appears after opening an app, minimizing it, changing displays, or switching between wired and wireless connections.
- A full screenshot or short recording that includes the desktop and the settings page used to check visibility.
Samsung’s published material does not provide one universal restoration procedure for every case in which the taskbar remains absent after the visibility setting is enabled. Device-specific support is therefore safer than a speculative reset or registry change.
