Rust crashing while you join a server is not one specific error. The useful first split is whether the game closes at startup, fails during Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) authentication, stops while downloading a custom map, or affects only one server. Close Rust and Steam, restart Steam, update the client, and verify Rust’s files before reinstalling anything. Then follow the branch that matches the failure stage.
These checks are free, reversible, and based on Facepunch and Steam support guidance. They do not prove a single cause for every crash, so record exactly where the failure occurs and whether it happens on one server or several.

Identify the crash before changing anything
Write down what you see instead of treating every failed join as the same problem. Rust may close to the desktop, freeze, show an EAC message, stop during a map download, or load the server and then fail. Also note whether the problem occurs on one community server, on every server, or only after a particular map begins downloading.

This table is a triage aid, not a guarantee that one symptom has one cause. Facepunch’s guidance covers failures before the menu, before connection, and during play, while its custom-map documentation is aimed mainly at map makers and server operators.

Run the least disruptive fixes first
Do these steps in order. Stop when the problem is resolved, and test the same server again after each meaningful change so you know what helped.

Close Rust and Steam completely
Exit Rust normally. Then quit Steam from its menu rather than merely closing the window. Wait a few seconds and start Steam again. A stuck game process or incomplete Steam session can make a later launch fail. Do not start Rust from an old desktop shortcut while diagnosing; use the Steam Library entry.

Install pending Steam client updates
Allow Steam to finish any client update before launching Rust. If Steam offers participation in a beta client, opt out while troubleshooting; Facepunch includes leaving Steam beta participation in its startup-error sequence because beta builds can behave differently from the standard client.

Launch Rust from the Steam Library
Open Steam, select Library, choose Rust, and click Play. This is the normal launch path for a secure server and ensures Steam starts the game and EAC together. If you usually use a custom shortcut or launcher option, remove that variable for the test.

Verify the installed files
In Steam, open Rust’s Properties and select the Installed Files section, then choose “Verify integrity of game files” (wording can vary slightly by Steam client version). Let the process finish and allow Steam to reacquire any missing or damaged files. Steam describes verification as a way to check that files are correctly installed when files are missing or a game crashes.

Verification can take time and may redownload files, but it is less disruptive than deleting the installation. Restart Steam after verification if it reports repairs, then test the join again.

Restart the computer and network equipment if the failure persists
Restart Windows, then restart your internet connection in the ordinary way if you can do so safely. This clears temporary processes and network state. It is a diagnostic step, not evidence that your internet is definitely the cause.

Reinstall only after the checks above
A fresh Rust installation is a later option in Facepunch’s startup troubleshooting sequence. Use it when verification and the targeted EAC or connection checks do not change the behavior. Reinstalling consumes download time and bandwidth, so it should not be the first response to a single failed join.
If the message mentions Easy Anti-Cheat
EAC is involved in Rust’s secure-server authentication. Facepunch Studios Support notes: “Very rarely, EAC will conflict with your system and prevent you from playing Rust.” That sentence appears in its article “Launching Rust with EAC disabled (RustClient.exe),” updated September 29, 2026. Treat it as one possible branch, not a diagnosis for every crash.
Repair EAC after an authentication timeout
For an EAC authentication timeout, Facepunch’s sequence is:

- Close Rust and launch it normally from the Rust entry in your Steam Library.
- Wait briefly with Rust closed, then run Steam’s file verification for Rust as described above.
- Open Rust’s installation folder and enter the
EasyAntiCheatfolder. - Run
EasyAntiCheat_EOS_Setup.exe, choose the repair action, and allow the repair process to complete. - Restart the computer and try the same server again.
The executable name is shown in code because it must be typed or selected exactly. The folder location can differ if you installed Steam or Rust on another drive; use Steam’s local-files option to open the current installation directory rather than guessing a path.
Additional EAC checks, only when the error calls for them
If repair does not help, Facepunch also lists restarting the PC and internet connection, installing pending Windows updates, and checking whether antivirus or firewall software is interfering with EAC. Do not broadly disable antivirus as a routine fix. Instead, inspect its quarantine, blocked-application, and firewall-event entries for an EAC-related block, and restore normal protection immediately after any controlled test.
Facepunch’s EAC troubleshooting also refers to checking for the named EAC cache file and reviewing output_log.txt for applications that EAC identifies as forbidden. The exact filename or path can vary with the current build, so use the wording in the EAC message and the current Facepunch instructions. If a log names a particular application, close or update that application rather than removing unrelated software at random.
Use the EAC-disabled run only as a diagnostic comparison
Facepunch provides a comparison test using RustClient.exe. If ordinary Rust fails while the EAC-disabled run succeeds, EAC is highly likely to be involved. This test is not a normal workaround: Facepunch says the EAC-disabled client can connect only to EAC-unsecure servers. It will not provide the normal secure-server access most players want. Record the result and report it to Facepunch Support instead of continuing to play in that mode.

If only one server causes the crash
A failure limited to one server changes the diagnosis. Try a different server, preferably one that does not use the same custom map. If other servers load normally, the original server or its map download becomes a plausible source, even though the client may be the component that visibly closes.

Custom-map download problems
Facepunch’s Rust wiki describes custom-map failures involving a host problem, VPN or antivirus filtering, DNS or other network configuration, firewall rules, blocked domains, and IP restrictions. It also describes stale or mismatched map files and client errors associated with certain broken prefabs in older custom maps. Those notes are largely written for map makers and server operators; they should not be generalized into a diagnosis for every client crash.
When the stop occurs during a map download, capture the server name, map name if shown, the exact error text, and the time of the failed attempt. Tell the server owner whether another server works and whether the failure repeats after Steam file verification. The owner can check host availability, map packaging, access restrictions, and server logs in ways a client cannot.
VPN, DNS, firewall, and filtering checks
If you use a VPN, web filter, security suite, or custom DNS service, perform one controlled test with that service disconnected or returned to its normal configuration, provided doing so is safe under your organization’s policy. Do not make permanent firewall or antivirus changes based only on a single-server symptom. A successful test points to a filtering path that should be configured narrowly, not to a need to leave protection disabled.

Facepunch’s EAC disconnection guidance says the connection to EAC backend servers may not be working. Launch Rust through Steam and check that antivirus or firewall software is not blocking EAC’s connection. This advice applies to an EAC “Disconnected” error specifically; it is not evidence that every crash while joining is a network problem.
After checking the block records in your security software, restart Steam and retry. If the message changes to an authentication timeout, follow the EAC repair sequence rather than repeating random network changes. If only one server remains affected, return to the custom-map and server-owner branch.

Use the failure scope to choose your next test

These are branching tests, not promises of a particular result. A test that changes nothing is still useful because it prevents you from repeating the same step or buying equipment without evidence.
What to collect before contacting support
Escalation is faster when the report describes a reproducible event rather than simply saying “Rust crashes.” Prepare the following:
- The complete error text, including whether it says authentication timeout, Disconnected, map download, or another EAC status.
- The exact stage: before the main menu, while joining, during map download, immediately after loading, or during play.
- Whether the problem occurs on one server or several, with server names and map names where relevant.
- The date and approximate time of each failed attempt, including your time zone if the server owner is elsewhere.
- Whether restarting Steam, updating Steam, and verifying files changed anything.
- Whether you ran the EAC-disabled comparison and its result. Facepunch specifically asks users to report that diagnostic outcome to support.
- Relevant log information, including any application EAC identifies as forbidden and the pertinent section of
output_log.txt.
Use Facepunch’s support portal for the game issue. The portal requires you to sign in with the Steam account that owns Rust and is associated with the problem. Do not remove logs or screenshots that contain the exact error before you have copied the text into your report.
When not to buy hardware or an optimizer
A join-time crash by itself does not establish that you need more memory, a new drive, a new router, replacement hardware, a repair utility, or a paid optimizer. The official troubleshooting material points first to Steam state, installed files, EAC, security filtering, and server or map conditions. Complete those free checks and gather evidence before spending money.
Hardware investigation becomes reasonable only when independent symptoms support it, such as crashes in several unrelated games, system-wide freezes, blue screens, or diagnostic errors outside Rust. Those symptoms are not established by a Rust server-join failure alone and require a separate diagnosis.
