“Connection unexpectedly closed” means your local rsync lost the connection to the remote rsync process. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The remote process may never have started, a login shell may have written text into the protocol stream, a daemon may have rejected an option, the link may have timed out, or the server process may have crashed.
Identify the transport (SSH/remote shell or rsync daemon), record the exit code and when the failure occurs, then test that layer directly. The workflow below separates those causes without guessing.
What the error actually means
Rsync starts a local process and asks a remote rsync process to exchange a protocol stream. When the remote side disappears, the local side reports that the connection was unexpectedly closed. The same event can be printed as rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) or as a broken-pipe write.
The wording does not tell you whether the network, SSH, a shell startup file, permissions, the rsync executable, a daemon policy, a timeout, or the server itself is at fault. Treat it as a boundary marker: communication with the remote rsync stopped. Your next test should target the boundary at which it stopped.

First, classify the transfer
Rsync has two transport families. They use different processes and therefore require different checks.
| Command form | Transport | What must work | Typical first checks |
|---|---|---|---|
host:path, often with -e ssh |
SSH or another remote-shell transport | Login, a clean non-interactive shell, and a runnable rsync on the remote host | Run SSH independently, inspect shell startup output, verify the remote executable and path |
host::module |
Direct rsync daemon using a module name | Daemon listener, module policy, authentication and option acceptance | Read the daemon log and check module permissions and read-only settings |
rsync://host/module |
Direct rsync daemon using an rsync URL | The same daemon-side controls as a double-colon connection | Inspect daemon connectivity, logs and access rules |
Write down which form you used before changing anything. A successful SSH login does not prove that a direct daemon module is healthy, and a working daemon does not prove that an SSH remote shell is clean.

Save the complete command, including all options, source and destination paths, host name, account name and whether the operation is a push or pull. Record the rsync version on both ends. A version mismatch can change option handling and diagnostics, and an old daemon can hide useful option errors from the client.
Also note exactly when the failure occurs:
- Before any file list appears: suspect login, executable startup, authentication, option parsing or an inaccessible path.
- During negotiation or file-list exchange: suspect protocol-stream contamination, an incompatible option or an rsync process that exits while setting up.
- After files have transferred: suspect an idle or data-transfer timeout, resource exhaustion, storage failure or a process killed on the server.
Preserve the original exit status. If a wrapper script masks it, run rsync directly or print the wrapper’s status immediately after the command.
Make remote diagnostics visible
Some failures are hidden because diagnostic text is written into the data stream that rsync is using. On versions that support it, ask rsync to send messages to standard error with --msgs2stderr and pass the corresponding remote-side option with -M--msgs2stderr. For example:

rsync --msgs2stderr -M--msgs2stderr -av source/ host:/destination/
Keep the rest of your original options while testing. If the remote side emits a useful error after this change, capture it exactly; it can distinguish an option rejection from a transport loss. If your installed version does not recognize these options, remove them and continue with the independent tests below rather than treating the option error as a new root cause.
Test SSH without rsync
For an SSH-style command, test the remote shell itself:
ssh remotehost /bin/true > out.dat
Use the same host, account and SSH configuration that the rsync command uses. A correctly functioning non-interactive remote shell leaves out.dat at zero length. Any bytes usually mean that a login startup file is printing text when no interactive terminal exists. Common sources include .profile, .bashrc, .cshrc or a site-wide shell initialization script.
Typical contaminating output includes a banner, a command-not-found message, a status line, a fortune program or debugging echo. Rsync interprets those bytes as protocol data, so the session can fail with code 12 or a broken pipe even though an ordinary interactive SSH session appears normal.
Fix startup-file contamination safely
- Open the startup files for the account used by rsync and identify commands that print unconditionally.
- Guard interactive-only commands with the shell’s non-interactive check, or move them to an interactive-only file. For a POSIX shell, the test is commonly based on whether standard input is a terminal; preserve the syntax appropriate to that shell.
- Remove unsolicited banners from the account’s non-interactive path, including scripts sourced by the main startup file.
- Run
ssh remotehost /bin/true > out.datagain and verify that the file is empty before retrying rsync.
Do not suppress a genuine error merely to make the file empty. Fix the command that generates the output; otherwise the remote rsync may still be failing underneath.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVerify that the remote rsync can start
A clean SSH stream only proves that the shell is quiet. The account still needs permission to execute rsync and to reach the requested path.

- Connect with the same account and host, then check that rsync is discoverable in the non-interactive
PATH. Use the account’s normal command lookup, such ascommand -v rsync, and record the result. - Run the remote binary’s version command, for example
rsync --version. If the shell reports that the command is missing, use an absolute path in the rsync configuration or install rsync for that account. - Confirm that the account is allowed to execute the binary. Restricted shells, forced commands, container policies and security controls can terminate it immediately.
- Check read permission on a source and write or directory-traverse permission on a destination. Verify the path as the remote account, not as an administrator account.
- Check that the destination filesystem is mounted and has space and inodes. A process that exits as soon as it opens the destination can look like a lost connection to the client.
When a custom SSH configuration specifies a remote command or a nonstandard rsync path, reproduce that setting exactly. A test against a different account, host alias or shell can produce a misleadingly clean result.
Separate daemon failures from SSH failures
For host::module and rsync://host/module, there is no remote login shell to test. Go to the daemon’s own logs and configuration.
Read the daemon log for policy errors
Look for refused options, authentication failures, a module configured read-only, an access-control rejection, a missing path or an option that the daemon version does not understand. A daemon can close the connection immediately after parsing the request, which the client then reports as a protocol or unexpected-close error.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check obsolete daemon versions
Older daemon versions could hide option errors from clients. If the log shows an option or protocol incompatibility and the daemon is obsolete, upgrade it where your operating system and change policy allow. Retest with the same command after the upgrade; do not infer that a network problem was fixed merely because the client message changed.
Confirm module permissions and mode
- Verify that the module name is spelled exactly as configured.
- Check whether the module is read-only when you are attempting a push.
- Confirm the daemon account can read the source or write the destination directory.
- Check host allow/deny rules and authentication configuration.
- Ensure the daemon is listening on the expected address and port.
If the daemon process itself is exiting, treat that as a server incident rather than repeatedly retrying the client.

Interpret the exit code as a branch point
Exit codes identify the layer that reported a failure, but they do not identify the underlying cause by themselves.
| Code | Meaning | Use it to choose the next test |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | Socket I/O error | Check connectivity, listener availability, firewall behavior and whether a peer closed the socket. |
| 12 | Error in the rsync protocol data stream | Check shell output, remote startup, option compatibility and a remote process that exited during protocol exchange. |
| 23 | Partial transfer | Inspect the detailed file errors, permissions, vanished files and destination storage; the transport may still be usable. |
| 30 | Timeout during data send or receive | Check link idleness, transfer duration, server load and the configured --timeout. |
| 35 | Timeout waiting for a daemon connection | Check daemon reachability, listener state, firewall rules and daemon startup time. |
A code 12 following non-empty SSH test output points toward stream contamination. A code 30 after a long quiet period points toward timeout handling. A code 35 occurs while waiting for a daemon rather than while transferring data. Use those timing clues together with the transport type.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Handle idle links and timeouts
An otherwise healthy connection can be closed when no protocol traffic passes for a long interval. This happens with slow storage, a large gap between files, a busy server, a stateful firewall or an intermediate network device. Newer rsync versions can send keep-alive messages during lulls, but the behavior depends on the versions and the transport.
Set a timeout suitable for the network and workload with --timeout=SECONDS. Choose a value longer than the expected quiet interval, not an arbitrarily huge number that hides a dead peer. For example:
rsync --timeout=600 -av source/ host:/destination/
Apply the setting to both the normal SSH-style command and any daemon command you are testing, while keeping a record of the changed value. If failures move from a fixed idle interval to successful completion, inspect the firewall or load balancer as well; increasing rsync’s timeout treats the symptom but may leave an infrastructure timeout unchanged.

Investigate a remote crash or forced termination
If the remote rsync starts and then vanishes, log into the server and inspect the period of the failure. Check operating-system logs for an out-of-memory kill, process-limit violation, segmentation fault, service restart or security-policy denial. Check the account’s CPU, memory, file-descriptor and process limits, and inspect storage and filesystem errors.
For a daemon-side failure, run the daemon in the foreground with tracing according to the daemon’s supported configuration. Foreground tracing keeps the diagnostic output attached to the failing process instead of losing it in a service manager. Capture the trace while making one controlled reproduction, then return the daemon to its normal supervised mode.
Do not assume that a large file caused the problem. A crash can be triggered by a path, an option, a module rule, resource exhaustion or a daemon defect. The server logs and trace are the evidence needed to distinguish those cases.
Common scenarios and the shortest path to a fix
| Observed behavior | Most useful next action | Likely correction |
|---|---|---|
Failure occurs immediately; out.dat contains text |
Inspect every non-interactive shell startup file | Remove or guard unsolicited output, then repeat the zero-length test |
| SSH login works interactively, but rsync cannot find its peer | Run command -v rsync and rsync --version as the rsync account |
Fix the non-interactive PATH, use the correct absolute binary path or install rsync |
| Daemon URL fails before a file list | Read the daemon log and verify module policy | Correct module name, access rules, read-only mode or rejected options |
| Transfer stops after a quiet interval with code 30 | Measure the idle interval and inspect intermediate network devices | Set an appropriate --timeout, enable supported keep-alives and adjust infrastructure timeouts |
| Transfer stops while the server is under pressure | Inspect memory, process limits, storage and kernel logs | Resolve the resource or storage failure and retest under normal load |
| Code 23 lists specific files | Read every per-file error rather than focusing on the final summary | Fix the stated path, permission or vanished-file condition; the connection may not be the root problem |
Use a controlled reproduction
After each change, reduce the test to a small, known path. Use a temporary source directory containing a few files and a destination where the account has confirmed access. Keep the same host, account, transport and relevant options. A small transfer tells you whether startup and negotiation work without waiting for a full backup.
- Run the independent SSH test, when applicable, and confirm zero output.
- Confirm the remote executable and destination using the transfer account.
- Run a small rsync command with diagnostics directed to standard error where supported.
- Record the exit code and the exact point at which it stops.
- Restore the original source and destination only after the small transfer succeeds.
Changing several variables at once—new host alias, a different account, a new daemon module and a new timeout—makes the result impossible to attribute. Change one layer at a time.

- Keep the client and remote rsync versions recorded for scheduled jobs.
- Keep non-interactive shell startup files free of banners, progress displays and unconditional diagnostics.
- Monitor daemon logs and configure rotation so the failure context remains available.
- Document module names, read-only status, allowed hosts and the account used by automation.
- Set a timeout based on the slowest expected quiet period and review firewall or load-balancer idle limits.
- Alert on the original exit code instead of only matching the phrase “connection unexpectedly closed.”
- Test a small transfer after server, shell, firewall or rsync upgrades.
A practical decision sequence
Use this order when you need a fast, repeatable diagnosis:
- Classify: identify SSH/remote-shell syntax versus daemon syntax.
- Record: save the full command, both versions, timing and exit code.
- Expose: enable
--msgs2stderr -M--msgs2stderrwhere supported. - Prove the transport: run
ssh remotehost /bin/true > out.datfor SSH, or inspect listener and daemon logs for a daemon connection. - Prove startup: verify the remote rsync binary, account permissions and paths.
- Prove policy: check daemon module rules, option acceptance and read-only state.
- Prove stability: investigate idle timeouts, resource limits, storage and process crashes.
- Retest small: reproduce with a controlled directory before returning to the full job.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: treating every code 12 or broken pipe as a network outage. The message only says that the protocol peer is gone; the tests above identify why.
