If Roku streaming stopped working soon after a DNS change, first reverse that change at the router or ISP gateway, restart the network, and run Roku’s built-in connection test. That timing is a useful clue, not proof that DNS is the cause: the same symptoms can come from Wi-Fi interference, a failed internet connection, a Roku network profile, an app, or an account-linking problem.

Work through the checks below in order. Each step separates local-network access from internet access and changes as little as possible, so you can identify the failing component without immediately erasing Roku settings.

Start by identifying which connection is failing

Roku’s connection test checks two different conditions: whether the player can see and join your local network, and whether it can reach the internet. Treating those as separate tests prevents a DNS change from being blamed for a Wi-Fi or router outage. A device can associate with Wi-Fi yet fail to obtain a usable internet path, or it can have internet access while one app or account service is unavailable.

What you observe What it suggests Next check
Roku cannot see or join the wireless network A Wi-Fi signal, password, router, or Roku-network-profile problem is more likely than a DNS-only problem. Reconnect to the correct network, verify the password, and inspect signal information.
Roku joins Wi-Fi but cannot reach the internet The router’s internet connection, DNS configuration, or an upstream service may be failing. Test another device on the same router, then roll back the DNS change.
Other devices work, but Roku does not The problem may be Roku-specific, a saved network profile, or an app/account issue. Restart Roku, reset its network connection if needed, and test the affected app separately.
Only one app or the Streaming Store fails The service or Roku account link may be involved even when general internet access works. Check other Roku apps and investigate that service or account independently.
Video starts but buffers or drops quality Congestion, weak Wi-Fi, interference, or insufficient throughput may be involved; DNS is only one possibility. Check signal, compare another device, and use Roku’s speed guidance as a capacity reference.

Write down what changed, which devices fail, and whether the failure is constant or intermittent. Those observations make it easier to undo only the relevant setting and avoid an unnecessary factory reset.

1. Reverse the DNS change at the router or gateway

DNS settings are normally controlled by the router, an ISP-provided gateway, or a network-wide DNS service. Roku’s official support material does not describe one universal DNS rollback menu on the Roku player itself, and router interfaces differ by manufacturer, firmware, and ISP. Do not guess a menu path from instructions for another model.

Find where the change was made

  • If you edited a standalone router, use that router’s management documentation.
  • If your internet provider supplied a combined modem/router, use the gateway’s instructions or ask the provider for the exact DNS settings path.
  • If a network-wide DNS service or administrator made the change, contact that administrator rather than changing the Roku individually.
  • If you changed DNS in a mesh system, check the mesh controller’s internet or DHCP settings; an individual satellite may not own the setting.

Record the current values before changing them, if the interface allows it. If you wrote down the previous DNS addresses, restore those exact values. If the previous setup used Automatic, Obtain DNS automatically, or provider-assigned DNS, select that mode instead of entering a guessed address. A vendor guide such as TP-Link’s places DNS controls in router-management and LAN/DHCP settings, but that example is not a universal procedure for every router.

Do not substitute a public DNS address merely because it is familiar. A typo, an unreachable resolver, a router that rejects the address, or a gateway that still advertises the old value through DHCP can leave clients in a confusing half-changed state. Restoring the prior mode is the safest diagnostic because it is reversible and returns the network to its known configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save the change and restart the router

  1. Apply or save the restored DNS setting in the router or gateway interface.
  2. Restart the router using the manufacturer’s normal reboot command or procedure. Avoid repeatedly pressing the physical reset button; a factory reset is a different operation and can erase router configuration.
  3. Wait until the router reports a normal internet connection before testing Roku.
  4. Give a mesh system time to bring its nodes back online before judging the result.

Restoring the previous or automatic setting is reversible. If Roku remains offline afterward, continue with the connection test instead of assuming the rollback failed. Some devices retain a temporary network lease until they reconnect, which is why the router restart and a Roku restart are both useful.

2. Run Roku’s connection test and follow the result

On the Roku remote, open Settings > Network > Check connection. Roku describes the test this way: “The device will test whether it sees your network and whether it can reach the Internet.” The two results lead to different troubleshooting paths.

If Roku cannot see or join the network

  1. Choose the correct Wi-Fi network from the available list.
  2. Re-enter the wireless password carefully, including capitalization and punctuation.
  3. Confirm that another device can see the same network from the Roku’s location.
  4. Check that the router is broadcasting the expected band and that a guest network has not replaced the normal network.
  5. Move to the Wi-Fi troubleshooting section below if the network is visible but unstable.

A failure at this stage occurs before ordinary internet and app testing. It points toward wireless coverage, router availability, credentials, or Roku’s saved network information—not proof that a DNS server is unreachable. DNS is used after a device has a network path; it cannot explain a Roku that cannot associate with Wi-Fi at all.

If Roku sees the network but cannot reach the internet

Connect a phone or computer to the same router and open a public website. Use the same Wi-Fi network rather than cellular data, and test more than one site if possible. If that device also cannot get online, investigate the router’s WAN connection or an ISP outage. If other devices browse normally while Roku alone fails, proceed with Roku’s restart and network-reset steps, then retest after confirming the DNS rollback.

If a browser reports that a name cannot be resolved but direct connectivity otherwise appears normal, the restored DNS setting deserves attention. Nevertheless, check the router’s status and another client before concluding that DNS is the sole cause. A provider outage, captive-portal requirement, or filtering policy can produce similar symptoms.

If both parts of the test pass

General connectivity is working. If playback still fails, test more than one channel or app. A single-service outage, an app problem, an account-linking issue, or insufficient throughput is more likely than a broken local DNS configuration. Note whether the title fails at launch, buffers after starting, or reports a sign-in error; each pattern points to a different branch.

3. Restart the Roku and router before making deeper changes

Roku recommends restarting the player and router for common connection problems. A restart clears temporary network state without deleting installed apps or account settings. It can also force the Roku to obtain a fresh address, gateway, and DNS information from the router after a configuration change.

Restart from the Roku menu

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose the available restart option and confirm it.
  4. After the home screen returns, run Settings > Network > Check connection again.

If the menu is unresponsive, disconnect the Roku’s power briefly and reconnect it, following Roku’s guidance for the model. Use the supplied power method where possible; an underpowered USB port can create separate instability. Do not confuse removing power with a factory reset; a brief power restart does not intentionally erase the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart in the correct order

  1. Restart the router or gateway and wait for its normal internet indicators.
  2. Restart the Roku.
  3. Run the connection test and try a known-working app.
  4. Repeat the test on another app so a single-service failure is not mistaken for a network failure.

This order gives the Roku a fresh network session after the router has loaded its restored DNS and DHCP settings. If the router takes several minutes to reconnect to the ISP, wait for that process to finish rather than repeatedly restarting the Roku.

4. Reset Roku’s saved network connection if it still fails

If restarting does not help, reset only Roku’s network connection before considering a factory reset.

  1. Open Settings > System > Advanced system settings.
  2. Select Network connection reset.
  3. Choose Reset connection and confirm.
  4. When Roku returns to network setup, select your Wi-Fi network and enter its password.
  5. Run Settings > Network > Check connection once more.

This removes the saved network association and requires reconnection, but it is materially less destructive than a factory reset. Have the Wi-Fi password available before starting. If the reset cannot find your network, return to router and Wi-Fi checks rather than repeatedly resetting Roku; repeated resets do not improve a network that is out of range or using an unsupported band or channel.

5. Rule out Wi-Fi conditions that look like DNS failures

Inspect Roku’s network information

Open Settings > Network > About to review the current connection information and signal strength, then run Check connection. Weak or fluctuating signal can produce buffering, failed channel launches, and intermittent reachability that resembles a name-resolution problem. Compare the result at the normal viewing location, not only beside the router.

  • Move the Roku and router closer together when practical.
  • Reduce walls, cabinets, metal objects, and other obstructions between them.
  • Keep the player away from sources of radio interference where possible.
  • Consider a supported 5 GHz network when the Roku model and router offer compatible coverage.
  • If 5 GHz is weak at the television, test the router’s 2.4 GHz network instead of assuming the faster band is better at that distance.

Be careful with 5 GHz channel changes

Some Roku models do not use certain DFS channels. Roku’s support information includes model- and channel-dependent caveats, so do not change the router’s channel solely because a generic guide recommends it. Check the exact Roku model’s compatibility first. A channel adjustment that is unsupported can make the network disappear from the player. If you do test a channel, change one setting at a time and record the original value so you can undo it.

Use Ethernet only as a supported diagnostic

An Ethernet comparison is useful only when the Roku model has an Ethernet port or supports a compatible adapter. Connect the player directly to the router, then test the same app and quality level. Smooth wired playback while Wi-Fi playback fails points toward wireless coverage or interference. Ethernet does not undo a router DNS change, and buying an adapter without checking model support can leave you with unusable hardware.

Keep the comparison fair: use the same router, internet plan, and streaming title, and allow the app to reach its normal quality. A successful wired test narrows the fault to Wi-Fi; it does not prove that DNS was never involved, because both wired and wireless clients may share the same resolver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Compare Roku with another device on the same router

Use the same network—not cellular data—to compare behavior. A laptop or phone that cannot open a public website indicates a router, gateway, ISP, or broader DNS problem. If that device works while Roku fails, concentrate on Roku’s network profile, Wi-Fi conditions, firmware state, or the affected app.

Roku result Other device on same router Most useful branch
Cannot join Wi-Fi Works normally Check Roku credentials, signal, band compatibility, and reset the Roku network connection.
Joins Wi-Fi but has no internet Also has no internet Check router/gateway status, the restored DNS mode, and the ISP connection.
Joins Wi-Fi and has internet Works normally Test another Roku app, restart the player, and check for app or account-specific symptoms.
Works over Ethernet Wi-Fi devices are unreliable Treat Wi-Fi coverage or interference as the leading suspect.
All apps fail on Roku while other devices work Works normally Reset Roku’s network connection, verify the account link, and then consider model-specific support.

Do not use a speed-test result from a different room or a cellular connection as proof of Roku’s capacity. The relevant comparison is the path from the Roku through this router and this internet service.

7. Separate general Roku access from app and account problems

A successful connection test does not guarantee that every service is available. Open more than one installed app and, if possible, play a short title in each. If only one service fails, check that service’s status and sign-in state through its normal support path. An app can be down, require a fresh sign-in, or reject an expired authorization while Roku networking remains healthy.

The Roku Streaming Store can be inaccessible because of network trouble or an account-linking issue. Therefore, a Store failure by itself is not evidence that DNS is responsible. If the Store fails while other internet-connected Roku features work, verify the Roku account link and investigate the Store separately from router configuration. Avoid repeatedly changing DNS while an account or service issue is still the better match for the symptoms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When contacting an app or Roku support team, note the exact error text, whether every app is affected, the connection-test result, and whether another device on the same router works. Those details are more useful than simply reporting that streaming stopped after a DNS edit.

8. Use speed figures as a capacity check, not a DNS diagnosis

Roku Support lists these typical download-speed thresholds. They are general guidance, not a test proving that DNS caused a failure, and individual apps may require different minimums.

Playback target Typical download speed listed by Roku Support Qualification
SD 3 Mbps Typical Roku guidance; publication year is not stated.
HD 5 Mbps Typical Roku guidance; publication year is not stated.
4K Ultra HD 25 Mbps or more Typical Roku guidance; publication year is not stated.

These figures help explain buffering when the internet connection is slow or congested. They do not identify which DNS service is configured, and meeting them does not rule out Wi-Fi packet loss, an app outage, or account trouble. Conversely, a brief speed-test peak does not guarantee sustained throughput during evening congestion. Test near the Roku and repeat at the time the problem occurs.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

9. Factory-reset only after the reversible fixes fail

A factory reset is a last resort. It erases Roku settings and requires apps and accounts to be set up again. Before using it, confirm that you have the Roku account credentials, Wi-Fi password, and any app sign-in details needed for setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • First restore the router’s previous or automatic DNS mode.
  • Run the Roku connection test.
  • Restart the router and Roku.
  • Reset Roku’s network connection and reconnect.
  • Check Wi-Fi conditions and, when supported, compare Ethernet.
  • Test multiple apps and the Roku account link.
  • Confirm that the internet service itself is working on another device.

If all of those checks fail and you accept the setup work, use Roku’s system reset option for your model and follow every on-screen confirmation. A factory reset cannot repair an ISP outage, unsupported Wi-Fi channel, or a service-side app problem, so do not use it as a substitute for those checks. If the same failure returns immediately after a clean setup, that result is useful evidence to provide to Roku or the network administrator.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing DNS on the Roku when the router owns the setting: use the router, gateway, or network administrator’s documented controls.
  • Assuming timing proves causation: a failure beginning after a DNS edit can still be coincidental or caused by Wi-Fi, the ISP, an app, or an account link.
  • Using another router’s menu path: labels and locations vary by model and firmware; follow the exact device documentation.
  • Changing 5 GHz channels blindly: DFS and model compatibility can prevent Roku from seeing the network.
  • Buying an Ethernet adapter without checking support: wired testing applies only to Roku models with an Ethernet port or compatible adapter support.
  • Factory-resetting too early: network reset and restart steps preserve far more of your configuration.
  • Testing through cellular data: a phone on cellular is not testing the same router, DNS, or ISP path as Roku.
  • Changing several settings at once: make one reversible change, test, and record the result so you know which action mattered.

A compact decision path

  1. Restore the old DNS values or automatic/provider DNS at the router or gateway.
  2. Restart the router, then the Roku.
  3. Run Settings > Network > Check connection.
  4. If Roku cannot join Wi-Fi, fix credentials, coverage, or compatibility.
  5. If Roku joins but the internet fails on every device, troubleshoot the router or ISP.
  6. If only Roku fails, use Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Network connection reset > Reset connection.
  7. Compare Wi-Fi with supported Ethernet and inspect signal details in Settings > Network > About.
  8. If only one app or the Streaming Store fails, investigate that service and the Roku account link.
  9. Use the 3 Mbps SD, 5 Mbps HD, and 25 Mbps-or-more 4K figures as capacity guidance, not proof of a DNS fault.
  10. Reserve factory reset for a final, deliberate recovery step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can changing DNS directly on a Roku fix streaming?

Roku’s documented troubleshooting does not provide one universal DNS menu for every player. DNS is usually managed on the router, ISP gateway, or network-wide service. Restore the prior or automatic/provider setting there, then restart the router and Roku.

What does Roku’s Check connection test actually prove?

It tests both whether the player sees and joins the local network and whether it can reach the internet. Passing the first part does not guarantee internet access, and passing both does not guarantee that every app or the Streaming Store is available.

How can I tell whether Wi-Fi or DNS is the problem?

Compare Roku with another device on the same router, inspect Roku’s signal information, and use supported Ethernet when available. If wired playback is smooth but Wi-Fi fails, wireless conditions are the leading suspect. If every device loses internet after the DNS change, investigate the router or ISP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will resetting Roku’s network connection delete my apps?

The network connection reset removes the saved network association and requires you to reconnect to Wi-Fi. It is less destructive than a factory reset and does not intentionally erase installed apps or account settings.

When should I factory-reset Roku?

Only after restoring DNS, restarting the router and player, running the connection test, resetting Roku’s network connection, checking Wi-Fi, and separating app or account problems. A factory reset erases settings and requires apps and accounts to be configured again.

Why does the Roku Streaming Store fail while other apps work?

Roku says Store access can fail because of network trouble or an account-linking issue. Check the Roku account and other services before assuming that DNS is responsible.

Do Roku’s speed requirements identify a DNS problem?

No. Roku lists typical guidance of 3 Mbps for SD, 5 Mbps for HD, and 25 Mbps or more for 4K Ultra HD. Those figures address throughput and buffering; they do not identify a DNS cause, and individual apps may differ.

The Bottom Line

Undo the DNS change where it was made—usually the router or ISP gateway—then restart the router and Roku and run Settings > Network > Check connection. Use the result to separate Wi-Fi association from internet reachability, compare another device on the same router, and reset Roku’s network connection if needed. Check signal strength, supported Ethernet, app behavior, and account linking before considering a factory reset.
