When a RimWorld engine update appears to break your mods, first determine whether you have a real failure or only a compatibility warning. For Update 1.7, Ludeon says the move from Unity to its in-house Waylith Engine leaves the vast majority of mods working without author changes. A yellow “potentially unsupported” label can simply mean that the mod has not yet been marked for the new game version.
If the game actually crashes, hangs, loses mod content, or behaves incorrectly, protect your save, verify versions and dependencies, isolate the failing mod or interaction, and then decide whether updating the mod or temporarily returning to an older game branch is safer. The sequence below is designed to find the cause without sacrificing a working colony.
What changed in RimWorld 1.7
Ludeon’s October 2026 announcement says RimWorld 1.7 moves the game from Unity to the studio’s in-house Waylith Engine. It also says that 1.6 saves load in 1.7 and that 1.7 saves work when returning to 1.6. Those statements describe the game’s stated save compatibility, not a guarantee that every modded save is safe to move between versions.

Therefore, a warning by itself is not proof that a mod is broken. A mod can display the warning and still load and function normally.

The announcement described 1.7 as available on Steam’s unstable branch for testing and advised restarting Steam if the game did not update automatically. Branch and release status can change, so check the current Ludeon announcement and the branch labels shown in Steam before changing versions.
Warning versus functional failure

1. Write down the exact symptom and build
Do not start by disabling random mods. Create a short record while the failure is reproducible:
- Copy the complete RimWorld version and build number shown by the game.
- Note whether the trigger was a major engine release, a small game patch, or an individual mod update.
- Describe the symptom precisely: failure to launch, an endless loading screen, a red error window, missing content, a broken interface, a crash after selecting a save, or incorrect behavior after loading.
- Record whether the issue affects every colony or only one save.
- Write down the last change made before the failure, including a game update, a mod update, a dependency update, or a changed load order.
These distinctions determine the safest test. A warning at the main menu calls for verification; a crash during startup requires a minimal mod test; missing content in one colony demands extra care because removing a content mod can affect that save.
2. Check whether the mod is actually supported
Open the mod’s current page and read the author’s latest update notes rather than relying on an old description or a color-coded warning. Look for an explicit supported game version, a compatibility patch, a required framework, known incompatibilities, and load-after or load-before instructions. Also check whether the author has temporarily hidden, replaced, or split the mod for the new engine.

RimWorld’s 1.1 release guidance described mod metadata for supported versions, dependencies, ordering, and incompatibilities. The exact controls and labels can change between releases, so use the labels currently shown in the game and on the mod’s page. A version tag is useful evidence, but it is not a substitute for reproducing the problem: a mod may be marked compatible yet conflict with another mod, while an unmarked mod may work perfectly.
Check dependencies before blaming the engine
- Verify that every required library or framework is installed and enabled.
- Make sure the dependency itself supports your installed RimWorld version.
- Follow the author’s stated load-before or load-after order.
- Look for an incompatibility list, especially if the failure began after adding a second mod.
- Confirm that you have only one active copy of a framework or replacement mod if the author warns against duplicates.
When a dependency is missing or loaded in the wrong order, the top-level mod can look broken even though its own files were updated.
3. Protect the save before changing anything
Make a separate copy of the affected save before loading it with a different mod list. Keep the original untouched while you test. If the game offers a way to duplicate a save, use that; otherwise copy the save through your normal file-management method and give the test copy a distinct name.
Disable or remove mods reversibly. Do not overwrite the only copy of a colony after loading it without content-heavy mods. A save that references items, buildings, quests, races, or hediffs supplied by a removed mod can behave differently even if the game does not immediately show an error. If you need to test whether a content mod is responsible, use a duplicate save or a temporary new colony first.

4. Test with a controlled mod list
The goal is to identify the smallest set of mods that reproduces the failure. Process of elimination is more reliable than repeatedly changing the entire list.
- Establish a baseline. Disable all nonessential mods and start the game. If the game still fails with the same build and no optional mods, the engine installation or a game-level issue needs attention rather than a single mod diagnosis.
- Test the suspect save carefully. Use the duplicate you made. If the problem is tied to a colony, first see whether the main menu and a temporary new colony work with the reduced list. Do not save over the original while content is missing.
- Re-enable a small group. Restore a logical group such as libraries, interface mods, world-generation mods, or content mods. Keep a written list of exactly what was enabled.
- Split a failing group. If the problem returns, disable half of that group and test again. Keep narrowing the failing half until one mod or a small interaction remains. This divide-and-test method requires fewer launches than adding mods one at a time.
- Test suspected interactions. A mod that works alone can fail beside another mod or a particular dependency. Once you have a short list, test each suspect alone and then in pairs or in the author-recommended order.
- Record the result. Note the exact list, order, save, and action that reproduces the error. A reproducible combination is much more useful than “mods broke after the update.”
Keep the test reversible. If restoring one mod makes the error return, remove it again and verify the result at least once so you do not mistake a transient loading problem for a diagnosis.
5. Read the error and share the complete log
When an error window appears, use its Share Log control and keep the resulting link. Ludeon’s forum guidance asks for a named mod list and the log. Include the full game version, the complete names of active mods in load order, relevant dependencies, the expected result, the actual result, and the shortest sequence that reproduces it.

- Game: full RimWorld version and build.
- Platform and branch: for example, the branch label currently selected in Steam.
- Mods: every active mod, in the game’s load order, including frameworks.
- Change: the update or mod change immediately before the failure.
- Reproduction: numbered actions that consistently produce the error.
- Expected versus actual: what should have happened and what the game did instead.
- Log: the link generated by Share Log.
Send a focused report to the mod author when the problem follows one mod or a documented dependency. Use the appropriate official support community when the failure remains after controlled testing. Do not post only a screenshot of a red error line: without the build, mod list, order, and log, helpers cannot reliably distinguish an outdated mod from a conflict.

6. Decide whether to update, remove, or replace the mod
Choose the least disruptive remedy supported by your test:
- Only a warning, no failure: leave the mod enabled while you monitor a duplicate save and wait for the author’s 1.7-compatible marking if the content behaves correctly.
- One outdated mod causes the failure: install the author’s compatible release, follow its dependency and order instructions, or keep that mod disabled until an update exists.
- A dependency is missing or obsolete: update the dependency and the parent mod together, then retest the same reproduction steps.
- Two mods conflict: choose which function matters more for the colony, look for an author-provided compatibility patch, or run only one of the conflicting mods.
- Failure remains with all optional mods disabled: treat it as a game or installation problem and provide the clean test result in your support report rather than blaming a mod.
A mod being individually updated does not prove that every combination involving it is compatible. Keep the exact working and failing lists so you can restore the known-good configuration.

Rollback is a compatibility strategy, not a universal cure. Use it when the required mod has no compatible release, the author or official guidance recommends an older game version, and you have a backed-up save that you are prepared to test separately.

- Close RimWorld and make another copy of the save and your current mod list.
- In Steam, open the game’s Properties and then the Betas section.
- Review the branches currently offered and select the specific older version you need, if it is available. Branch names and availability can change; do not assume that every historical build remains listed.
- Allow Steam to finish switching versions. If the game does not update automatically, restart Steam, as Ludeon advised for the 1.7 testing branch.
- Launch with the mod list intended for that version and test the duplicate save first.
- Keep the original save separate until you have confirmed that the branch and mod set behave as expected.
Ludeon’s February 2020 guidance for the 1.1 major update recommended the version-1.0 Steam branch for players using complex mods that had not yet been updated. That was advice for that release and that mod state, not a standing instruction to downgrade every 1.7 installation. The 1.7 announcement instead says most mods require no author changes, so apply the older example only when your present evidence supports it.

Why release-specific changes matter
Engine updates do not break the same technical surface every time. In the 2020 1.1 update, Ludeon expected simple data-only mods, such as new hairstyles, to be more likely to continue working while complex mods could break. The studio also described support for multiple mod versions. That explains why a complex code mod may need an update even when a simple asset mod does not.
The 2022 Steam Deck beta provides a different example. Ludeon said a new Steamworks API would break mods that accessed Steamworks, while expecting everything except a few affected mods to work on that beta. A targeted API change can therefore affect a narrow subset of mods without making the entire mod ecosystem unusable. Use the technical change named in the current release notes to guide your search; do not infer the cause from the word “engine” alone.

Preventing the next update from damaging a colony
- Keep a dated copy of important saves before a major game or mod update.
- Save a text record or screenshots of your active mod names and order before changing them.
- Read the game’s release announcement and the pages for your most important framework and content mods before opening a valuable colony.
- Test a major update on a duplicate save or temporary colony before committing to it.
- When a warning appears without a symptom, treat it as a prompt to verify rather than an automatic removal order.
- Keep a known-good game branch and mod combination documented so you can return to it if the current branch introduces a confirmed incompatibility.
When to ask for help
Ask for help after you have a reproducible symptom and a controlled test, not merely because a label changed color. The most effective request identifies the exact game build, the complete named mod list and load order, dependencies, the save or test scenario, the expected and actual results, the reproduction steps, and the link produced by Share Log. That information lets an author or community member determine whether the issue is a stale version tag, a missing dependency, a load-order mistake, a single outdated mod, or a conflict between otherwise current mods.
For Update 1.7, Ludeon has asked mod authors to report behavior that differs from 1.6 through the official development Discord. If you are a player, send your focused report to the mod author or the appropriate support forum and include the same evidence. Avoid posting a private save or personal information in a public log unless you have checked its contents.
