First identify whether Resident Evil is a digital download or a physical game card, then match the fix to what is failing: an incomplete download, an installation or storage problem, or a game that is already installed but will not launch. For the downloaded-software message “Unable to start software. Return to the HOME Menu and try again,” Nintendo’s recommended order is to restart the console, update the system, update the game, check for corrupt data, and then delete and redownload the software. If you see an error code, use Nintendo Support’s instructions for that exact code instead of assuming the same steps apply.

Before troubleshooting, note the exact error text or code, whether the download has finished, and whether the game is stored in system memory or on a microSD Express card. Those details determine which steps fit your situation and help avoid unnecessary changes. A card-read problem with a physical game card is not the same as a failure to start downloaded software.

Start by identifying the failure

The right troubleshooting path depends on both the format and the symptom. Before changing anything, note the full error message or code, whether the game has finished downloading, and whether the software is stored in system memory or on a microSD Express card. A digital-download launch error and a physical game-card read error are different problems; Nintendo provides separate troubleshooting for them.

  • Download has not completed or stops with an error: Record the displayed code. Error 2005-0003 is one Nintendo addresses specifically for failed software downloads.
  • Download appears complete, but the game will not start: If the message is “Unable to start software. Return to the HOME Menu and try again,” use the launch sequence below.
  • The game freezes, loads unusually slowly, or becomes unresponsive: Nintendo’s downloaded-software guidance also covers these types of behavior. Start with a restart and check for system and game updates.
  • You are using a physical game card: If the console reports that it cannot read the card, use Nintendo’s game-card troubleshooting guidance rather than deleting and redownloading software.
  • A microSD Express card is involved: Try the system-memory path before concluding that the card needs replacement or formatting.

These are console-level troubleshooting steps, not a diagnosis of a particular Resident Evil release. Nintendo lists Resident Evil Requiem for Switch 2 with a February 27, 2026 release date, and Capcom announced the same platform and date. The title in the question could refer to another Resident Evil game, so do not assume Requiem is the one installed.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Make a quick symptom record

Write down four things before starting: the exact wording or code on screen; whether the download is still in progress or has completed; whether the problem happens when you select the game or while you are downloading it; and whether the software is on system memory or a microSD Express card. Also note whether you are using a physical card. This simple record keeps the troubleshooting path focused: a download failure calls for code-specific download guidance, while a completed download that fails to start calls for launch guidance.

If an error appears only intermittently, record what you were doing when it appeared and whether restarting changed anything. Do not turn that observation into a diagnosis; it is useful information to report to Nintendo Support. The official steps are general console guidance and do not establish that a particular Resident Evil title is responsible for a platform-wide fault.

Fix a downloaded game that will not launch

For Nintendo’s “Unable to start software. Return to the HOME Menu and try again” message, work through the steps in order. After each one, try launching the game again. If the problem clears, stop there; later steps make more changes and may be unnecessary. The sequence is useful for a game that has already downloaded but does not start, rather than as a universal treatment for every error code.

1. Restart the Switch 2

  1. Open the console’s Power Options and choose the restart option.
  2. If the console is unresponsive and cannot be restarted normally, hold the POWER button for 12 seconds to force it to shut down. Turn it on again and test the game.

A forced shutdown is for an unresponsive console, not the routine first choice when the menus still work. If the console responds normally, use Power Options. After it starts again, try the game before moving on so you can tell whether the restart changed the symptom.

2. Install the latest system update

Check for and install the latest Switch 2 system update, then retry the game. Do not treat a successful console restart as a substitute for this check: Nintendo lists system software updates as a separate step in its launch-error sequence. The update applies to the console, not just Resident Evil, so distinguish it from the game update in the next step.

If the problem remains after the system update, continue through the sequence rather than assuming the update failed or repeating the restart. The point is to check each cause in Nintendo’s recommended order and test the game after each relevant change.

3. Check for a game update

Check whether an update is available for the Resident Evil software and install it before testing again. This is an update to the game itself, distinct from the console system update. A current system version does not mean the game has also been updated; check both separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If no game update is offered, move on to the corrupt-data check. Do not substitute an unrelated error-code procedure simply because the game still will not launch: use Nintendo’s launch steps for the quoted launch message, and use code-specific directions when a code is displayed.

  • HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.

4. Check the software for corrupt data

Use the console’s corrupt-data check for the affected downloaded software. If the check identifies a problem, follow the console’s available repair or redownload prompts. If it finds no issue and the game still will not start, continue to the next step rather than repeating the same check.

This check is a distinct step from deleting and redownloading the game. Complete it before choosing the more disruptive redownload step, and note whether it detected a problem. If you later contact support, that result helps describe what has already been ruled out or found.

5. Delete the software and download it again

Delete the affected software, then redownload it using the Nintendo Account that purchased it. This is Nintendo’s next recommended step for the launch message after the restart, system update, game update, and corrupt-data check. A redownload replaces the installed game files; it is not a reason to format the microSD Express card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make sure you are following the digital-software path: this step concerns downloaded software, not a physical card that the console cannot read. Nintendo says software saved on a card can be downloaded again with the purchasing Nintendo Account. If you are unsure which account purchased it, establish that before relying on redownloading as your next step.

Do not confuse the game files with save data. Nintendo says save data is stored in system memory, while downloaded software can be redownloaded with the purchasing account. Formatting a card is a separate operation that erases information on the card; it is not required simply because you are redownloading software.

6. If the game is on microSD Express, test system memory

If the problem remains and a microSD Express card is being used, try downloading the game to system memory. If it works there, the storage location or card may be relevant; if it still fails, a card may not be the cause. Nintendo also recommends card-related troubleshooting, including trying another card where appropriate. These are conditional diagnostic options, not universal fixes.

Use this as a comparison, not a promise that moving the software will repair it. The useful distinction is whether the same game behaves differently when stored in system memory instead of on the card. If the behavior does not change, the card is not automatically proven defective, and the issue may require other support steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nintendo’s guidance also includes checking the card and compatibility path. The official pages do not establish a recommended brand, capacity, or commercial model, so do not buy a particular card on the assumption that it will fix every download or launch failure. Consider a replacement only if the symptoms and card checks point in that direction.

Fix a download error, including 2005-0003

For download error 2005-0003, Nintendo’s error-specific guidance calls for checking system software, restarting the console, retrying the download, and reviewing the card and compatibility path. Use the displayed code as your guide: Nintendo’s instructions can differ from the generic launch-error sequence.

  1. Write down the exact code. A code may point to a different cause or set of steps than a game that downloads successfully but cannot launch.
  2. Check the system software. Install an available system update, then restart the console.
  3. Retry the download. If it fails again, follow Nintendo’s instructions for the displayed code and review whether a microSD Express card is involved.
  4. Do not remove the card while a download is in progress. Nintendo says to wait until downloads have completed before removing a card.
  5. Try system memory when card storage may be involved. This can help distinguish a card-related issue from a broader download problem without immediately erasing or replacing the card.

Keep the download and launch paths separate. If the game has not finished downloading, begin with the code-specific instructions for the download failure. If it has finished and then displays “Unable to start software. Return to the HOME Menu and try again,” use the launch sequence instead. A code displayed during the download should not be treated as though it were the quoted launch message.

If the console displays a code other than 2005-0003, search Nintendo Support for that exact code and follow its specific directions. Do not assume that the 2005-0003 sequence or the launch-error sequence is the correct remedy for every code. Error-specific directions may include their own card or compatibility checks, so the exact code matters more than the game title alone.

For any download involving microSD Express, wait for downloads to complete before removing the card. If the download fails again, use Nintendo’s card-related instructions and consider the system-memory path as a diagnostic. Do not jump straight from one failed attempt to formatting: Nintendo identifies formatting as a later option and warns that it deletes the information on the card.

Protect data before changing a microSD Express card

Formatting is a later troubleshooting option, not a first response to a failed download or launch. Nintendo warns that formatting a microSD Express card deletes the information on it. Back up screenshots and videos stored on the card before formatting.

Nintendo says downloaded software saved on a card can be downloaded again with the purchasing Nintendo Account, while save data is stored in system memory. That distinction matters: a software redownload and a card format are not the same action, and a card format erases its contents. If the game works when downloaded to system memory, continue using that diagnostic result before deciding whether any card change is needed.

Before you consider formatting or replacement

  • Try the less destructive comparison first. If card storage is involved, test system memory where appropriate. This helps determine whether the failure changes with the storage location without erasing the card.
  • Back up card contents. Formatting deletes information on the microSD Express card. In particular, back up screenshots and videos stored there before formatting.
  • Know what can be downloaded again. Nintendo says software saved on the card can be redownloaded with the Nintendo Account that purchased it.
  • Keep save data separate in your thinking. Nintendo says save data is stored in system memory; a software redownload is not the same as formatting a card.
  • Check compatibility rather than guessing. Nintendo’s instructions include a card compatibility path, but the support information does not recommend a particular commercial card, brand, or capacity.

Additional storage may be required depending on the Switch 2 hardware model and how it is used. Nintendo’s Resident Evil Requiem listing notes that possibility, but it does not provide a universal capacity recommendation for every owner or every Resident Evil title. Check the listing for the game you actually have and the console’s storage situation rather than assuming a certain card size is necessary.

A microSD Express card is a conditional purchase consideration only when storage limits or card-related symptoms make it relevant. Buying one is not a general fix for an incomplete download, an error code with different instructions, or a game that fails to launch for another reason. Do not buy or format a card before you have used the appropriate Nintendo troubleshooting path.

When the physical game card is the problem

If you own Resident Evil on a physical game card and the Switch 2 shows a card-read message, do not follow the digital-software delete-and-redownload procedure as your starting point. Nintendo separates game-card reading issues from downloaded-software launch errors. Use its game-card troubleshooting path for the message you see. If the console instead reports the quoted downloaded-software error, return to the launch steps above and confirm whether the software is actually a download.

The format distinction is important even if both versions of a game appear on the HOME Menu. A download error such as 2005-0003 concerns software downloads; a message that the console cannot read a physical card belongs to the separate game-card guidance. Identify which version you are using before deleting software, moving storage, or trying to redownload anything.

What to do if the game still fails

After the steps that match your symptom, make a short record of the outcome: whether the restart helped, whether system and game updates were available, what the corrupt-data check reported, whether a redownload completed, and whether the game behaved differently from system memory. For download problems, note the exact code and whether the card was left in place until the download completed.

This is not a requirement to repeat every step for every problem. Follow the relevant sequence: the launch instructions for the exact quoted launch message, the specific Nintendo Support page for a download error code, or the separate physical game-card path for a read problem. Skip inapplicable steps rather than treating all failures as identical.

No official troubleshooting statistic establishes how often these steps succeed, and Nintendo’s guidance does not promise that a particular step will solve an individual console. It offers a repeatable sequence and a route to additional support. If the problem remains after the applicable official steps, contact Nintendo rather than assuming the game itself is defective or buying storage hardware without evidence.

When to contact Nintendo Support

If the downloaded-software launch problem remains after you complete Nintendo’s listed steps, contact Nintendo for additional support. When you do, have the exact message or error code ready and be prepared to say whether the software is a digital download or physical card, whether it is stored in system memory or on microSD Express, and which update, data-check, and redownload steps you have already tried. That information helps distinguish a game launch failure from a download or storage-card issue.

For a download failure, include whether the code was 2005-0003 or another value and whether you tried the error-specific directions. For a card-related symptom, say whether the download was complete before the card was removed and whether the game behaved differently from system memory. If you have not formatted the card, say so; if you have, be clear that formatting erases its contents. These details describe the troubleshooting history without presuming a cause.

Nintendo’s available guidance gives general console troubleshooting; it does not establish that a particular Resident Evil game is causing a widespread Switch 2 fault or guarantee that one step will solve an individual console’s problem. Nintendo’s launch-error page directs users to contact support if the issue persists after its steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do first if Resident Evil will not start on Switch 2?

Confirm that it is a digital download and note the exact message. For “Unable to start software. Return to the HOME Menu and try again,” restart the console, install the latest system update, check for a game update, check for corrupt data, and then delete and redownload the software, testing after each step.

What does Switch 2 download error 2005-0003 mean for troubleshooting?

Use Nintendo’s error-specific instructions rather than the launch-error sequence by default. Nintendo’s steps include checking system software, restarting, retrying the download, and reviewing the card and compatibility path. Do not remove a card until downloads have completed.

Should I format my microSD Express card to fix a failed Resident Evil download?

Not as an early step. Nintendo warns that formatting deletes information on the card. Try relevant card checks and, where appropriate, testing system memory first. Back up screenshots and videos on the card before formatting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will deleting and redownloading the game delete my save data?

Nintendo says downloaded software saved on a card can be downloaded again with the purchasing Nintendo Account, while save data is stored in system memory. A software redownload is different from formatting a card, which erases information on that card.

What if Resident Evil is on a physical game card and Switch 2 cannot read it?

Use Nintendo’s separate game-card troubleshooting guidance for the card-read message. The downloaded-software delete-and-redownload steps are not the right starting point for a physical card problem.

Do I need to buy a microSD Express card to fix the problem?

Not necessarily. Nintendo’s guidance makes card checks conditional, and testing system memory can help determine whether storage location matters. The cited support information does not recommend a specific card brand or capacity, and a new card is not a universal fix.

Which Resident Evil game is confirmed for Switch 2?

Nintendo lists Resident Evil Requiem for Switch 2 with a February 27, 2026 release date, and Capcom announced the same platform and date. That does not mean every question about Resident Evil on Switch 2 refers to Requiem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Match the fix to the symptom: use Nintendo’s ordered restart, update, corrupt-data, and redownload steps for the downloaded-software launch message; follow Nintendo’s exact instructions for a download error code such as 2005-0003; and use separate game-card guidance for physical-card read problems. Test system memory before treating a microSD Express card as the cause, and back up its contents before any formatting because formatting erases card information.
