Razer Hammerhead connection failures usually come from a depleted charging case, poor contact between an earbud and its case, a stale Bluetooth pairing, or a laptop using the wrong audio or wireless driver. Work through those causes in that order: restore case power, reseat the earbuds, clean and charge them, remove the old Bluetooth entry, then pair again.

The exact reset gesture depends on whether you have Hammerhead True Wireless, 2nd Generation, Pro, X, or HyperSpeed earbuds, so do not apply a reset sequence from a different model. The checklist below separates problems affecting one bud, both buds, the charging case, and a particular host device so you can stop once the fault is isolated.

Match the symptom to the first remedy

What you see Most likely starting point What to do first
The phone says the earbuds are connected while they are in the case The case has insufficient power Charge the closed case with both earbuds inside for about 15 minutes. A blinking red case LED is the warning sign.
Only one earbud works or appears in Bluetooth The buds are out of sync, one bud is undercharged, or a contact is dirty Charge both, reseat the affected bud, then clean the earbud and case contacts.
Neither earbud appears during pairing Stale pairing data or another phone still holding the connection Forget the saved Hammerhead entry, disable Bluetooth on previously paired phones, and pair within about one metre.
The earbuds connect but audio drops on a laptop Wrong playback output or an Intel wireless-driver issue Select the Hammerhead as the active output, unmute the source, and update the Intel wireless driver when applicable.
An earbud will not charge or turn on after cleaning Incorrect seating or a hardware fault Verify that the case is powered and the contacts are dry. If the same bud remains dead, contact Razer support with the exact model number.

This order matters. Pairing cannot fix an earbud that has not charged, and a firmware update cannot make a case with a flat battery shut the earbuds down. Note which side fails and whether the failure follows the earbuds to another source; that observation prevents unnecessary resets.

1. Give the charging case enough power

Put both earbuds in their charging slots, close the lid, and connect the case to power for about 15 minutes before trying to pair. Keep the lid closed during this initial charge so the case can charge the earbuds and signal them to shut down.

Pay attention to the case indicator. Razer states that Hammerhead True Wireless earbuds can appear to remain connected to a phone while enclosed if the case does not have enough power to charge them; the case LED blinks red in that condition. The phone is reporting the last active Bluetooth link, not proof that the earbuds are receiving charge. Recharge the case until the warning condition has cleared, then open the lid and check again. This explanation appears in Razer’s Hammerhead True Wireless 2nd Generation support FAQ, updated 21 September 2025.

  • Use a known-good charging cable and a powered USB port or charger.
  • Keep both earbuds seated while the case charges; an earbud left outside cannot be recharged by the case.
  • Do not judge the case by the phone’s Bluetooth status alone. Confirm that the buds are physically seated and that the case has power.
  • Check that each earbud is sitting fully down rather than resting on an ear tip, debris, or a misaligned hinge.

If the case LED continues blinking red after the charge period, give the case additional time and verify the cable and power source. A red warning is a power-state clue, not evidence that the phone or earbuds need a factory reset. Once the case has adequate power, close the lid again for about five seconds before opening it to test whether the Bluetooth connection ends normally.

2. Reseat the earbuds and restore their connection

A bud that is slightly lifted in its cavity may not touch the charging pins or receive the signal that ends the Bluetooth session. Place the problem earbud fully into its slot, close the lid, wait about five seconds, and reopen it. Razer’s support instruction is: “Place the misbehaving earbud inside the charging case and close the lid.” The earbud should reconnect automatically after the lid is opened.

If both earbuds are out of sync with each other, remove them from the case and hold both earbuds for four seconds to enter pairing mode. Follow the pairing sequence for your model so the two earbuds link to each other before you connect the set to the phone or computer. The four-second action is a synchronization step, not a universal factory-reset command; reset gestures vary by generation.

If only the left or right earbud works

  1. Place both earbuds in the case and charge them for about 15 minutes.
  2. Remove and reseat the silent earbud, close the lid for approximately five seconds, and open it again.
  3. With both buds out, use the model’s two-earbud pairing procedure so they link to each other.
  4. Only after the buds are synchronized, remove the old Bluetooth entry from the host device and pair the set again.

If the silent side still shows no battery or no indicator after these steps, continue with contact cleaning before assuming the earbud has failed. A one-sided failure can be caused by an empty cell or dirty contact even when the working side has plenty of charge.

Do not pair the working side by itself repeatedly while troubleshooting. That can leave the host with another stale entry and make it harder for the two earbuds to establish their internal link. Keep both buds together through the charge, reseat, synchronization, and fresh-pair sequence.

3. Clean the charging contacts safely

Oil, dust, or residue on the metal contact area can prevent an earbud from charging and can also stop it from receiving the case’s shutdown and pairing commands. Razer’s procedure is to use a cotton bud lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Remove the earbuds from the case and disconnect the case from power.
  2. Gently wipe the metal contact area on the affected earbud.
  3. Wipe the corresponding contact cavity or charging pin area inside the case.
  4. Leave both surfaces to dry completely before putting the earbuds back in the case.
  5. Reseat the earbuds, close the lid for about five seconds, and then charge the closed case.

Use only a small amount of alcohol; do not flood the cavity or scrape the contacts with a metal tool. Never close the lid while the surfaces are wet. If the earbud still does not charge after the contacts are clean and dry, test the other slot and then move to the pairing and software checks below.

Cleaning is especially important when the app reports one side at zero battery while the case appears powered. The reading may reflect a bud that never touched its charging contact. Let the alcohol evaporate fully, then look for a firm magnetic seat and a charging indication before deciding that the battery itself is defective.

4. Remove the old Bluetooth record and pair again

A saved Bluetooth record can preserve an incomplete connection, especially after switching between phones, computers, or earbud generations. Delete the old Hammerhead entry on the device you want to use, then start a fresh pairing.

  1. Open the host device’s Bluetooth settings.
  2. Select the saved Razer Hammerhead entry and choose Forget, Remove, or the equivalent command.
  3. Temporarily disable Bluetooth on another phone or tablet that was previously paired. Razer’s master guide says the earbuds can connect to only one mobile device at a time.
  4. Open the charging-case lid with both earbuds inside or remove them according to your model’s pairing instructions.
  5. Select the Hammerhead from the available-device list while the source is nearby. Razer specifies pairing within about one metre.
  6. Play audio and confirm that both channels work before moving away from the source.

If the earbuds do not appear, close the case, wait five seconds, reopen it, and scan again. Do not repeatedly select several similarly named entries; remove stale records first so the host presents a single current pairing.

Keep the phone or computer within roughly one metre during this first connection. After both channels play correctly, you can test normal range. If a previously paired phone is nearby, turn off its Bluetooth radio for the pairing attempt rather than relying on the phone’s screen to show that it is idle.

5. Check battery status and firmware in the Razer Audio app

Once the earbuds are connected, open the Razer Audio app. The app displays the battery state of the earbuds, exposes device settings, and presents firmware-update notifications. A battery reading can distinguish a pairing problem from an earbud that never made electrical contact with the case.

  1. Connect the earbuds to the phone using the fresh Bluetooth pairing.
  2. Open the Razer Audio app and select the connected Hammerhead device.
  3. Check that both left and right battery levels are reported.
  4. Install any offered firmware update and follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Keep the phone, earbuds, and case powered during the update; do not close the app or interrupt power until it finishes.

If the app sees only one side, return to the charge, reseat, and contact-cleaning steps. If the app cannot see the earbuds at all after a successful Bluetooth pairing, close and reopen the app, then reconnect the earbuds before checking for an update.

Use the app as a diagnostic, not just an update tool. Equal battery reporting on both sides suggests that the case contacts and earbud-to-earbud link are functioning; a missing side points back to seating, charging, or synchronization. Do not begin an update with a nearly empty case, and do not interrupt power while new firmware is being installed.

6. Stop laptop-only dropouts

When the earbuds work reliably with a phone but cut out on a laptop, isolate the computer rather than repeatedly resetting the earbuds. First confirm that the Hammerhead is the active playback device and that the application and system volume are not muted. A computer may remain connected to the earbuds while sending sound to its speakers, a monitor, or a different Bluetooth profile.

  1. Open the laptop’s sound or playback-device selector.
  2. Choose the connected Razer Hammerhead output explicitly.
  3. Check the application’s own output setting and make sure neither the application nor the system is muted.
  4. Play audio close to the laptop and note whether the dropout occurs only on that computer.
  5. If the laptop uses an Intel Wi-Fi module, install the current Intel wireless driver recommended for that laptop model, then restart and test again.
  6. Test the earbuds on a second source. If they remain stable there, the fault follows the laptop configuration rather than the earbuds.

Updating a wireless driver is relevant only when the computer uses the applicable Intel hardware and driver stack. For another wireless chipset, use the computer manufacturer’s current Bluetooth and Wi-Fi drivers instead of assuming the Intel package applies.

Check both the operating system output and the individual app output. Video-call software, music players, and browser tabs can retain a different output even after Windows or macOS shows Hammerhead as connected. Testing close to the laptop first separates a routing problem from a radio or driver problem.

7. Try Compatibility mode for older or incomplete Bluetooth implementations

Razer documents a Compatibility mode in the mobile app for host devices that do not implement all Bluetooth packet-size protocols. The documented examples include a MacBook Pro running macOS 10.15, Huawei phones on Android 10, Meizu Pro 7 Plus, and Redmi Note 4.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the earbuds to the phone and open the Razer Audio app.
  2. Open the Hammerhead device settings and locate Compatibility mode.
  3. Toggle the setting on when the host matches the type of compatibility problem described by Razer.
  4. Wait several seconds for the earbuds to reconnect, then play audio.

Use this mode as a compatibility adjustment, not as a substitute for charging or cleaning. If the earbuds fail on every source, changing packet handling will not repair a dead battery or a damaged contact.

After changing the setting, allow several seconds for reconnection before opening another Bluetooth menu or starting another pairing attempt. If the problem is limited to one older host and the earbuds work on a current phone, leave the earbuds otherwise unchanged and use Compatibility mode only for that host.

8. Identify the correct model before attempting a reset

Hammerhead True Wireless, True Wireless 2nd Generation, Pro, X, and HyperSpeed variants do not necessarily share the same reset gesture or software behavior. A sequence that is correct for one generation may do nothing—or invoke a different function—on another.

  1. Find the exact model designation on the case, product label, packaging, manual, or the connected-device page in the Razer Audio app.
  2. Use the reset instructions published for that exact model and generation.
  3. After the reset completes, remove every old Hammerhead Bluetooth record from the host device.
  4. Charge the case, open the lid, and perform a clean pairing within about one metre.

Do not hold touch surfaces for a random duration in the hope of finding a universal reset. The available support information does not establish one gesture that applies to every Hammerhead variant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reset should be a later step, not the first response to a blinking-red case or a dirty contact. Record the model and the side that fails before resetting so you can describe the original symptom to support. After a model-specific reset, the earbuds still need a fresh Bluetooth pairing; the reset does not automatically remove saved entries from your phone or laptop.

When the problem is probably hardware

Escalate to Razer support when all of the following are true:

  • The charging case has been powered and no longer shows the insufficient-power warning.
  • The earbud has been seated correctly and given time to charge.
  • The metal contacts and case cavity have been cleaned with lightly applied isopropyl alcohol and allowed to dry.
  • The old Bluetooth entry has been removed and pairing has been attempted again.
  • The Razer Audio app is current enough to show the device and any available firmware update has been completed without interruption.
  • The same earbud remains unable to turn on or charge, including when tested with another source or the other case slot where the model permits that check.

Provide support with the exact model number, which side fails, the case LED behavior, whether the app reports a battery level, and the steps already completed. Razer can then give model-specific service or replacement guidance instead of sending a reset procedure for the wrong generation.

A replacement cable, case, or earbud should be matched to the exact Hammerhead variant rather than chosen by appearance. Different generations can have different charging cases and reset procedures. If the case itself never powers, or one bud remains completely unresponsive after clean contacts and adequate charging, stop repeated pairing attempts and request service or replacement guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable troubleshooting checklist

  1. Put both earbuds in the case and charge the closed case for about 15 minutes.
  2. If the case LED blinks red, continue charging before judging the Bluetooth state.
  3. Reseat the affected bud, close the lid for about five seconds, and reopen it.
  4. For a single-bud failure, synchronize both earbuds with the model’s four-second pairing action.
  5. Clean the earbud contacts and case cavities with a lightly moistened cotton bud, then let them dry.
  6. Forget the saved Hammerhead entry and disable Bluetooth on another previously paired phone.
  7. Pair again within about one metre and verify both channels.
  8. Use the Razer Audio app to read both battery levels and install offered firmware.
  9. For laptop-only problems, select the Hammerhead playback device, unmute the source, and update applicable Intel wireless drivers.
  10. Use Compatibility mode only when the host has a documented Bluetooth packet-size compatibility issue.
  11. Identify the exact Hammerhead generation before attempting a reset.
  12. Contact Razer support if a clean, charged earbud remains dead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my Razer earbuds stay connected in the case?

Check the charging-case LED. If it blinks red, the case may not have enough power to charge the earbuds and end their Bluetooth session. Put both earbuds in the case, close the lid, and charge it for about 15 minutes before testing again.

Why is only one Razer earbud working?

Charge both earbuds, reseat the silent side for about five seconds, and clean its metal contact and the matching case cavity with a cotton bud lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Then synchronize both earbuds using the model’s pairing procedure and remove the old Bluetooth entry before pairing again.

How do I reset Razer Hammerhead earbuds?

There is no single reset gesture for every Hammerhead generation. Identify whether yours is True Wireless, 2nd Generation, Pro, X, or HyperSpeed, then follow the instructions for that exact model. Do not use a gesture copied from another variant.

Why won’t my Razer earbuds charge?

First power the case and look for a blinking red LED. Reseat the earbud, clean the metal contacts and case cavity with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol, and let everything dry before charging. If the same side remains dead, contact Razer support with the model number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do my Razer earbuds keep disconnecting from my laptop?

Select Hammerhead as the active playback device, check the application and system volume, and test the earbuds on another source. If the laptop uses an Intel Wi-Fi module, update the applicable Intel wireless driver and restart the computer.

What does Compatibility mode do?

It changes Bluetooth packet handling for hosts that do not implement all packet-size protocols. Razer lists examples such as macOS 10.15 MacBook Pro and certain Android 10 phones. Enable it in the Razer Audio app only after charging and contact checks are complete.

The Bottom Line

Start with power, not a reset: charge the closed case with both earbuds inside for about 15 minutes and treat a blinking red LED as the key warning. Reseat each bud for five seconds, clean dirty contacts, synchronize a one-sided set, forget old Bluetooth records, and pair within one metre. Use the Razer Audio app for battery and firmware checks, apply Compatibility mode only for documented host issues, and handle laptop dropouts through output selection and applicable Intel driver updates. If one exact model and one side remain dead after those steps, give Razer support the model number and LED behavior for service or replacement guidance.
