If recordings on your Google Pixel are unusually quiet, first make two short tests: record a clip in the Pixel Recorder app, then record a video in Camera. Recorder exercises the phone’s bottom microphone and Camera exercises its top microphone. Google’s diagnostic guidance is simple: “If you hear your recording, your bottom microphone works.” It likewise says, “If you hear sound in the video, your top microphone works.” Comparing those clips tells you whether the problem is limited to one app, one microphone path, an accessory, a privacy setting, or the phone itself.
While testing, turn Bluetooth off, disconnect any wired USB-C audio accessory, remove the case and screen protector, and check that Android’s system microphone control is enabled. Inspect the microphone openings and USB-C area, then gently wipe them with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not push anything into the openings or use liquid. After that, verify the affected app’s Microphone permission, restart and update the phone, and repeat both tests. If both official tests remain quiet across apps, stop changing app settings and contact Google Pixel support or an authorized repair provider.
Start with two controlled recordings
Do not begin by changing random volume sliders. A microphone problem is diagnosed by comparing the same voice, distance, and room in two apps that use different microphone paths. Perform the tests in a quiet room, hold the phone about 20 to 30 centimeters from your mouth, and speak at a normal conversational level. Keep the phone uncovered and do not connect a headset during the first pass.

- Open the built-in Recorder app.
- Start a new recording and speak for 10 to 15 seconds.
- Stop and play the clip through the phone speaker or headphones that you know are working.
- Listen for volume, muffling, dropouts, and whether your voice starts only when the phone is held at a particular angle.
Recorder is the practical check for the bottom microphone. Google states, “If you hear your recording, your bottom microphone works.” A clear Recorder clip does not prove every microphone on the phone is healthy; it proves that this recording path captured your voice under the test conditions.

Test 2: Camera video
- Open Camera and switch to the normal video mode.
- Record another 10- to 15-second clip while speaking at the same distance and volume.
- Play the video back and compare it with the Recorder clip.
Camera checks the top microphone path. Google’s wording is, “If you hear sound in the video, your top microphone works.” A clear video with a quiet Recorder clip points toward the bottom-microphone path, Recorder, or an app permission issue. A quiet video with a clear Recorder clip points toward the top-microphone path or Camera-specific conditions.
Use the result to narrow the fault

These tests are more useful than a single call because they remove the other person’s phone, network conditions, and call-volume controls from the diagnosis.
Fix mute and audio routing before changing settings
Confirm that the microphone is not muted
During a call or meeting, look at the in-call controls and make sure the microphone icon is not crossed out. A mute state can make a caller report silence even when Recorder and Camera work normally. End the call and use the two local recordings to determine whether the mute was the only issue.
Disable Bluetooth temporarily
Bluetooth can route input to a car system, earbuds, speakerphone, or another paired device. Turn Bluetooth off from Quick Settings, then repeat the Recorder and Camera tests. If the volume returns, reconnect devices one at a time until you identify the accessory or profile that changes the input route. Leave the accessory disconnected while testing other fixes.
Disconnect wired audio equipment
Remove any USB-C headset, adapter, dock, or other audio device. Some accessories contain a microphone and can become the selected input even when they are not obvious in the app interface. Test with only the phone and its built-in speaker for playback. Reconnect the accessory only after the built-in microphone tests are normal.

Remove cases and protectors that can cover an opening
Take off the phone case and screen protector temporarily. A case can partially cover, misalign, or press against a microphone opening; a protector can interfere with an opening near the top edge. Google recommends using a case made for Pixel and checking accessories when callers cannot hear you clearly.
With the accessories removed, make new clips in both Recorder and Camera. Do not judge the result from an old file recorded while the case was installed. If the bare phone sounds normal, replace the case or protector with one designed for your exact Pixel model and verify that every microphone opening remains unobstructed.

Where to look
Inspect the small microphone openings around the phone, including the bottom edge near the USB-C area and the opening used by the top microphone. Dust, pocket lint, dried residue, or a misaligned accessory can reduce the sound reaching the microphone. Use a bright light and look without inserting a tool.
Use only gentle dry cleaning
Google’s instruction is: “If they’re dirty, gently clean with a soft, lint-free cloth.” Fold the cloth over a fingertip and wipe the surface around the openings and the USB-C area without pressing into a hole. Do not add water, cleaning fluid, compressed liquid, pins, needles, brushes with stiff bristles, or abrasive material. Liquid and sharp objects can damage the microphone membrane or the USB-C port.
After cleaning, wait until loose debris is gone and repeat both controlled recordings. If the opening appears blocked under the grille or the phone has been exposed to liquid, do not attempt an internal repair; move to professional support.

Check Android’s system microphone privacy control
Android can disable microphone access for the entire phone. When that control is off, several otherwise unrelated apps may produce silence or extremely low audio. Look in Privacy controls and Quick Settings for the system microphone toggle and make sure it is enabled. The exact label and location can vary by Android release, but it is normally shown as a microphone control or as part of the device’s privacy controls.

Android also displays a microphone-use indicator when an app accesses the microphone. Start a Recorder test and watch for that indicator. If Recorder is supposed to be recording but no indicator appears, check the system toggle and the app permission before assuming a hardware failure. If the indicator appears yet the file is quiet, continue with the physical and app-specific checks.
Allow microphone access for the affected app
A denied app permission can affect Recorder, Camera, WhatsApp, a meeting app, or a social-media camera independently. Google defines the Android Microphone permission as “Record audio.” Check it for every app that produces quiet recordings.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the affected recording app.
- Tap Permissions.
- Select Microphone and set it to Allow while using the app, or the available allow option appropriate to your Android version.
- Close the app completely, reopen it, and make a new recording.
Do not rely on an old file to verify the change. Record a fresh clip after granting access. If the permission is already allowed and Recorder and Camera are both clear, the permission is unlikely to be the primary cause; focus on the app’s own input selector, Bluetooth routing, or an app update.
Restart, update, and retest in a clean state
Close apps and restart the Pixel
Close the affected app and other apps that may be using the microphone, such as a meeting, voice assistant, camera, or call app. Restart the phone, wait for Android to finish loading, and repeat the Recorder and Camera tests before opening third-party apps. A restart can clear a stuck audio route or a process that retained the microphone.

Install current updates
Update the affected app through the Play Store and install any available Android system update through Settings. Then restart once more and create new test files. An update can correct an app-level recording defect or an audio-service problem, but it cannot reopen a physically blocked microphone.
Test without restoring a complicated setup
For the first post-update test, keep Bluetooth off and accessories removed. Do not launch a call or meeting app first. This gives you a clean baseline. Once the two built-in tests are clear, reconnect devices and open apps individually so a change in routing is easy to identify.

If both Recorder and Camera sound normal but one app is quiet, the phone’s built-in microphone paths are working under the test conditions. Concentrate on that app rather than repeatedly cleaning the phone.
Check the app’s input choice
Some calling and recording apps expose an audio-input menu. Select the phone microphone rather than a Bluetooth, wired, or virtual input, then make a new clip. If the app has a mute button, noise-suppression mode, or automatic gain option, verify that the microphone is not muted and that an unusually aggressive voice filter is not reducing your level.
Update or reinstall the app
Install the latest version. If the problem remains, back up any data the app stores locally, uninstall it, restart the Pixel, and reinstall it. Grant Microphone permission when prompted and test before reconnecting accessories. Reinstalling is appropriate only after the built-in tests establish that the issue is confined to that app.

Compare another app
Use a second third-party recorder or calling app only as a comparison, not as a replacement for the official tests. If several third-party apps are quiet while Recorder and Camera are clear, inspect the system microphone toggle, permissions, and audio routing again. If only one app fails, report the behavior to that app’s developer with the Pixel model, Android version, app version, and a short example that contains no private conversation.

When the evidence points to hardware
Do not infer a universal Pixel defect from a single quiet clip. A current secondary report describes several Pixel owners reporting unusually low microphone volume in native recording or particular apps, but it does not establish a prevalence rate or confirm one defect affecting every model. Your two controlled tests are more decisive for your device.
Escalate when both Recorder and Camera remain quiet after you have disabled Bluetooth, removed accessories, checked the system microphone control, verified permissions, cleaned gently, restarted, and updated. Also escalate when the problem follows the phone across multiple apps, began after a drop or liquid exposure, or is accompanied by a physically damaged grille or USB-C area.

- Pixel model and Android version.
- Which test failed: Recorder, Camera, or both.
- Whether removing the case or disabling Bluetooth changed the result.
- The apps and versions that are affected.
- Whether the phone was dropped, exposed to moisture, or repaired.
- A short test recording made without private or sensitive speech, if support requests one.
Support can then distinguish a software investigation from a repair appointment. Avoid poking the openings or opening the phone yourself, because additional damage can complicate diagnosis and service.
Prevent quiet recordings after the fix
- Keep microphone openings and the USB-C area free of pocket lint and residue.
- Use a Pixel-compatible case with correctly aligned openings.
- Check Bluetooth and wired audio routing before important recordings or calls.
- Keep the Android system and recording apps updated.
- Review the system microphone toggle after using privacy-focused settings.
- Before an interview, meeting, or voice note, make a five-second Recorder test and play it back.
The reliable workflow is to test both microphone paths first, correct routing and access, remove physical obstructions, then isolate one app at a time. If both official recordings still fail, professional support is the appropriate next step rather than repeated permission changes or aggressive cleaning.
