Start the audio that sounds quiet, then raise Android’s Media volume—not the ring or call slider—and confirm the sound is going to the intended headphones. In the connected headphones’ Bluetooth settings, make sure Media audio is enabled. Next check the headphones’ own controls, fit, charge, cleanliness and any manufacturer volume limiter. If the problem remains, cross-test the headphones with another device and another pair with your phone; the result usually shows whether the phone or headphones need attention.

Use this order to find the cause quickly

Quiet Bluetooth audio can be caused by a phone setting, incorrect Bluetooth routing, a second volume control on the headphones, a hearing-protection limit, poor earbud fit, low charge, debris or physical failure. Work through the checks below in order, changing one thing at a time so you know which step helped. Play the same song, podcast segment or video during each check; switching apps can introduce a separate recording or app-volume difference.

Likely cause What you may notice Best first check
Phone-side media setting Music or video is quiet while other sounds seem normal Raise Media volume during playback
Bluetooth routing The phone shows a connection, but sound comes from another device or the phone speaker Check the selected output and Media audio toggle
Manufacturer limiter Volume stops increasing or a limit message appears Inspect the device-specific media-volume limit
Headphone controls or fit Both sides are quiet, or one side changes when you reseat an earbud Use the headphone controls and adjust the fit
Debris, charge or damage Muffled sound, an intermittent side, or a problem after impact or moisture Inspect, charge and clean according to the maker’s instructions
Faulty phone or headphones The problem follows one device during cross-testing Try another phone and another pair of headphones

This order starts with reversible settings and ends with physical inspection and service. It also separates perceived loudness from an actual output fault: a poor seal or blocked grille can make a normal signal seem much quieter, while a wrong output route can make the headphones appear defective when they are not.

1. Raise the active Android media volume

Android keeps separate levels for media, calls, ring, notifications and alarms. The volume buttons can change a different stream when no media is active, so adjust the level while the affected song, video or podcast is playing.

  1. Start the exact audio that sounds quiet.
  2. Press a volume button.
  3. Open the expanded volume panel (use the three-dot or menu control if it is collapsed).
  4. Raise the slider labeled Media. Leave call, ring, notification and alarm sliders unchanged unless those are the sounds you are troubleshooting.
  5. Listen again at a comfortable level. Avoid holding the slider at maximum for long periods; loud sound can damage hearing.

Do not judge the setting from the lock screen or home screen alone. With no media playing, a volume key may adjust ring or notification volume instead. Start playback first, then watch which slider moves. If an app has its own volume control, such as a game or video player, check that control too, but keep Android’s Media slider as the main reference.

If several Bluetooth devices are paired or connected, use Android’s media-output selector in the volume panel to choose the headphones you intend to use. A phone can remain connected to more than one accessory while sending the current stream to only one of them. Google’s Android volume guidance documents separate sliders and the output selector.

2. Confirm Bluetooth is sending media to the headphones

A Bluetooth connection by itself does not prove that music audio is enabled. Android can connect for calls while leaving the media profile disabled, or it can route playback to another paired device.

  1. Open Settings and go to Connected devices (the label may be Bluetooth on some phones).
  2. Open the details for the connected headphones using the gear or information button.
  3. Make sure Media audio is turned on. Keep Phone calls enabled only if you also want the headphones for calls.
  4. Check the active output in the media panel and verify that another paired speaker, car system or earbud is not selected.
  5. If the connection appears stuck, turn Bluetooth off and on again, then restart both the phone and the headphones.

These checks follow Google’s Android Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance: check phone and accessory volume, verify the media route and Media audio setting, toggle Bluetooth when necessary and restart the devices. Menu names differ by Android version and manufacturer, but the profile toggle is normally in the connected accessory’s details.

Check the accessory’s own volume at the same time. Some headsets remember a low level from a previous phone, so Android may show a high Media slider while the headset remains quiet. If a car system, smart speaker or second pair is nearby, temporarily pause or disconnect it while testing to remove ambiguity about the active route.

3. Check controls on the headphones themselves

Many headphones have a volume level separate from Android’s slider. Buttons, touch gestures or an accompanying control app can lower that level without moving the phone’s Media slider. Increase volume using the headphones’ documented controls while audio is playing, then recheck the phone slider.

Headset controls are not always symmetrical. A long press may change volume on one model but skip tracks on another, and a touch-control remap in the manufacturer’s app can leave volume assigned to a different gesture. Use the model’s instructions instead of repeatedly tapping at random. If the headphones announce a maximum or minimum level, note whether that level changes when you adjust Android.

Samsung Galaxy: inspect Media volume limit

Samsung Galaxy phones include a Media volume limit feature for headphones and Bluetooth speakers. Samsung describes it as a hearing-protection control. If the phone reports that the volume limit has been reached, use this route to inspect it:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sounds and vibration.
  3. Tap Volume.
  4. Open More options.
  5. Select Media volume limit.

Menu wording and availability vary with Galaxy model and software version, and this is not a universal Android setting. If you change the limit, make a deliberate choice about hearing safety rather than treating the highest possible level as the goal. Samsung’s support instructions identify the limiter as applying to both headphones and Bluetooth speakers. If your Galaxy does not show this menu, do not infer that a hidden system limit is the cause; continue with routing, headphone and cross-test checks.

4. Check fit, balance and earbud-specific controls

In-ear headphones can sound quiet when the seal is poor. A loose tip lets outside sound mask the music and reduces bass, making the whole signal seem weaker. Reseat each earbud, try the supplied tip size that seals your ear without pain, and compare the sound with the earbuds held in the correct position.

Test one earbud at a time at a moderate level. If both are equally quiet, a phone setting, shared limiter or headset-level control is more likely. If only one is quiet, focus on that earbud’s fit, grille and independent control. A seal that changes when you gently reseat the bud points to positioning rather than an Android slider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some true-wireless models let each earbud have an independent volume gesture or balance setting. Check the maker’s instructions or control app for left/right volume, accessibility balance and touch-control assignments. If one earbud is quiet while the other is normal, verify that its control was not lowered independently before assuming a hardware fault.

Also check charge. A nearly empty earbud, case or headset can behave unpredictably or reduce output before disconnecting. Charge the headphones and case fully, then test again. For Galaxy Buds, Samsung’s model-specific guidance includes checking battery status in the companion app and confirming that the earbuds are seated correctly. Make sure both earbuds appear in the app; an earbud that is not detected may not be receiving the same settings or update.

5. Inspect and clean the headphones safely

Look closely at the speaker grille, nozzle, mesh and any air ducts. Samsung Support states that “The build-up of dust, earwax, or other debris near the speaker or earpiece can cause a muffled sound or even complete loss of audio quality over time.” This is especially common when only one earbud sounds dull or quiet.

  • Remove detachable ear tips before inspecting the nozzle.
  • Follow the headphone manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for your exact model.
  • Use only the tools and materials the maker permits; a soft, dry brush designed for electronics can be appropriate when the instructions allow it.
  • Do not push wax or dust deeper into the mesh, pour liquid into the speaker opening, or use sharp metal objects.
  • Keep charging contacts and microphones dry. Do not charge wet earbuds.

Compare the two grilles under good light. A visible difference in mesh color or blockage is useful evidence, but do not scrape at a sealed driver. Water resistance does not mean the earbuds can be rinsed or immersed; follow the model’s care instructions. After cleaning, let the parts dry completely before replacing tips or putting the earbuds in the case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An optional earbud-cleaning kit can help with visible buildup, but it is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s procedure. If the grille is torn, dented or contaminated after moisture exposure, stop cleaning and follow the maker’s service guidance.

6. Restart and update when the problem is software-related

A temporary Bluetooth profile or audio-service error can leave a connected headset unusually quiet. After checking the controls and routing, restart the phone and the headphones. Turn the headphones off completely before turning them back on, rather than relying only on the charging case’s brief disconnect.

For Galaxy Buds, Samsung also recommends checking the earbuds’ software and the companion app, then installing an available update for the phone or earbuds. These steps and menu names are model-dependent, so use the instructions for your specific Buds family. Keep the earbuds charged and near the phone during an update, and do not interrupt an update that is already in progress.

Do not assume that a developer option or a universal “absolute volume” switch is the correct first fix; the documented Android-wide checks are volume, routing, Media audio, Bluetooth state and restarts. If a restart temporarily restores loudness, note which device was restarted and whether the problem returns after reconnecting; that information helps the phone or headphone maker diagnose a recurring software issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Cross-test to identify the failing device

When settings and cleaning do not resolve the issue, perform two tests:

  1. Pair the quiet headphones with a different phone, tablet or computer and play the same type of audio.
  2. Pair a known-good pair of Bluetooth headphones with the Android phone and play the same audio.
Result What it indicates Next action
The same headphones are quiet on multiple devices The headphones, their fit, charge, debris or hardware are the likely source Repeat the physical checks, then use the manufacturer’s service or replacement process
Different headphones are also quiet on this Android phone The phone’s media setting, output route, limiter or Bluetooth software is more likely Recheck Media volume, output selection, Media audio and device-specific settings; restart and update
The headphones are quiet only on this phone A phone-side configuration or compatibility issue is likely Forget and pair the headphones again if your phone offers that option, then repeat the routing checks
Only one earbud is quiet on every device That earbud’s fit, grille, independent control or hardware is implicated Clean and reseat it; if it remains quiet, contact the manufacturer
Sound changes when you move or reseat an earbud The acoustic seal or earbud position is affecting perceived loudness Try another tip size and wear both sides in the manufacturer’s recommended position

Samsung recommends this two-way cross-test because it helps distinguish a headphone problem from a phone problem. Test with comparable content and a moderate, known volume so differences in the recording or app do not confuse the result. If the second device uses a different output or has its own volume limit, record those settings as well.

8. What to do when only one side is quiet

A left/right imbalance narrows the diagnosis. First check the Android accessibility audio-balance control if your phone provides one, then inspect the quiet side for blocked mesh, a loose tip or a separate earbud-volume gesture. Confirm that both earbuds show charge and that both are recognized by the companion app. Remove and reinsert the quiet earbud to restore its seal.

Swap the earbuds between ears briefly, without forcing an uncomfortable fit. If the quietness follows your ear rather than the earbud, check the seal and your listening position; if it follows the physical earbud, concentrate on that unit. Keep the test at a safe level and stop if either ear feels painful or sounds distorted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the imbalance follows that physical earbud to another device after cleaning and charging, it is not an Android media-slider issue. Visible cracks, crushed grilles, corrosion or a history of water exposure support a hardware diagnosis. Use the manufacturer’s warranty or repair instructions rather than opening a sealed earbud.

9. When replacement or service is justified

Do not buy new headphones before the cross-test. Replacement or service becomes reasonable when the same side or the whole headset remains quiet on multiple devices, the grille or housing is damaged, the battery will not hold charge, or the output changes with movement in a way that indicates a cable, connector or internal fault. Keep purchase records and note the model and software version before contacting support; those details help the manufacturer provide the correct procedure.

If another headset works normally on the phone, preserve the phone’s current settings and troubleshoot the original headphones. If every headset is quiet only on that phone, document the Android version, Bluetooth device model and the exact output route, then seek phone-maker support after repeating the documented checks. A support agent can use the cross-test result to avoid sending you through unrelated earbud-cleaning steps.

A compact decision path

  1. Playing audio is quiet? Raise the active Media slider.
  2. Correct headphones selected? Verify the media-output selector and the accessory’s Media audio toggle.
  3. Still quiet? Raise the headphones’ own volume and inspect any manufacturer limiter; Galaxy users should check Media volume limit.
  4. Sound muffled or uneven? Reseat, charge and clean the headphones carefully.
  5. No change? Restart and update the phone and, where applicable, the headphone software.
  6. Still unresolved? Cross-test both devices; service the component the problem follows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my Bluetooth headphones quiet even when Android shows high volume?

Android’s Media slider may be high while the headphones have their own lower volume, a limiter is active, or playback is routed to another device. While audio is playing, check the headphone controls, the selected output and the accessory’s Media audio setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can I hear calls but not music through Bluetooth headphones?

Open the connected headphones’ Bluetooth details and make sure Media audio is enabled. A phone can keep the Phone calls profile active while media playback is disabled or routed elsewhere.

Where is Samsung’s Bluetooth headphone volume limit?

On supported Galaxy phones, open Settings → Sounds and vibration → Volume → More options → Media volume limit. Menu names and availability vary by model and software, and this feature is Samsung-specific rather than a universal Android control.

Can earwax or dust really make one earbud quiet?

Yes. Samsung Support says dust, earwax or other debris near the speaker or earpiece can muffle sound or cause a complete loss of audio quality over time. Inspect and clean only as the headphone maker instructs; do not push debris into the mesh or pour liquid into the opening.

What if only the left or right earbud is quiet?

Reseat it, try the supplied tip sizes, check independent earbud volume and inspect its grille. Confirm both earbuds are charged and recognized by the companion app. If the same earbud remains quiet on another device after these checks, contact the manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I tell whether the phone or headphones are defective?

Pair the quiet headphones with another phone or computer, then pair a known-good headset with the Android phone. If the problem follows the headphones, service those headphones; if every headset is quiet only on the phone, focus on phone routing, settings or software.

Should I turn on an Android developer or absolute-volume option?

Not as a general first step. The documented Android checks are the active Media slider, output selection, Media audio, accessory volume, Bluetooth state and restarting the devices. Use model-specific support instructions if ordinary checks fail.

When should I replace the headphones?

Wait until cross-testing shows that the same headset or earbud stays quiet on multiple devices, or there is visible damage, corrosion, a failing battery or persistent hardware symptoms. Otherwise, the cause may still be a phone setting, routing choice, fit or debris.

The Bottom Line

Start playback and raise the active Media slider, select the intended Bluetooth output and enable Media audio. Then check the headphones’ own volume, fit, charge, cleanliness and any Samsung-specific limiter. Restart and update when appropriate, and cross-test with another device before paying for service or replacement.
