If a device is missing from Quick Share, first make the receiving device discoverable, turn on Bluetooth on both devices, and bring them close together. If you’re sharing between Android and Windows, also check Wi-Fi, network restrictions, and Windows compatibility. Follow the steps for your device combination below; the Windows requirements differ from Android-to-Android and Chromebook sharing.
Start with the receiving device
Quick Share can only list a device that is available to receive a transfer. Check the receiving device first—not just the device sending the file. Google’s Android Help says that a device in Receive mode is visible to nearby people while that screen is open. Google’s Quick Share instructions explain the Android visibility options.
This distinction is useful when one person can see devices but the other cannot. The sender’s search is not a way to make a hidden receiver visible: the receiving phone or PC must be in a state that permits discovery. Confirm which device is supposed to receive the file, make that device visible, and only then refresh the search on the sending device.
On Android
- Open Quick Share on the device that should receive the file and select Receive mode. Keep that screen open while the other device searches.
- If you want to use a visibility setting instead, open Quick Share settings and check the selected visibility option. The available options described by Google are Your devices, Contacts, and Everyone for 10 minutes. Which devices can see you depends on the selected option.
- With Your devices, devices using the same Google Account can remain visible even when the screen is off. With Contacts, the receiving screen must be on and unlocked. If you choose Everyone for 10 minutes, use that temporary window to check discovery, then change visibility when you’re done.
Use the option that matches the relationship between the devices. If both are yours and use the same Google Account, Your devices is the relevant setting. If the sender is a contact, check that Contacts visibility is selected and that the receiver is awake and unlocked. If you are testing with a device that does not meet those conditions, temporarily using Everyone for 10 minutes can help determine whether visibility is the obstacle. It is a time-limited setting, not a permanent requirement.

Receive mode is another direct test: Google says, “When your device is in ‘Receive’ mode, it’s visible to anyone nearby when you’re on that screen.” Keep the receiving device on that screen while the sender searches. When you finish, exit Receive mode or adjust visibility to suit how you want the device to be found.
Menu names and access paths can vary by Android device. If you can’t find the setting, open Quick Share itself and look for its Receive or visibility controls rather than relying on a device-specific menu path.
On Windows
- Open the Quick Share app on the Windows PC that should receive the file.
- Open the app’s Device visibility menu and choose a setting that allows the sending device to find the PC.
- Leave the app available while the phone searches. If the PC is not listed, continue with the connectivity and compatibility checks below.
Android’s Receive mode and Windows’ Device visibility menu are separate controls. Changing visibility on the phone does not make a Windows PC discoverable, or vice versa. Google’s Android-to-Windows Quick Share guide describes the PC-side requirements and settings.
For a phone-to-PC transfer, check both ends independently: the Android receiver’s visibility if the phone should receive, or the Windows Device visibility setting if the PC should receive. Then confirm that the sender is searching for the device you made visible. A visibility setting on the wrong device will not resolve a missing entry.
Check Bluetooth, screen state, and distance
Turn on Bluetooth on both the sending and receiving devices. On Android, also unlock the receiving device’s screen while troubleshooting. A locked or sleeping receiver may not be available under the selected visibility mode.
Bring the devices close together while checking discovery. Google’s Android troubleshooting guidance says to keep Android devices within 30 cm (1 foot). Its Windows requirements page gives a different distance—up to 5 metres (16 feet)—for Quick Share between Android and Windows. These are guidance for different contexts, not one universal Quick Share range.
- For Android-to-Android or Android-to-Chromebook discovery, try the 30 cm (1 foot) troubleshooting distance.
- For Android-to-Windows discovery, use the Windows guide’s up-to-5-metre (16-foot) requirement.
Use these distances as a controlled troubleshooting step: put the devices at the applicable distance, check that Bluetooth is on at both ends, and search again. Do not treat the figures as a guarantee that discovery will work at that distance. Visibility, network conditions, and compatibility still matter, particularly for Windows.

If you’re sharing between Android and Windows
Windows discovery depends on more than visibility and Bluetooth. Google lists app, operating-system, network, and hardware conditions for the Windows version. Check them before trying to change adapters or buy networking equipment.
This is the point to distinguish a missing-device problem from a notification problem. If the PC never appears in the sender’s device list, work through compatibility, Wi-Fi/network, visibility, and distance. If the PC is listed but a notification does not appear on Windows, use the notification check farther below instead.
Confirm Windows and app compatibility
- The PC needs a 64-bit Windows 10 or later installation and the appropriate Quick Share app.
- ARM-based Windows PCs require Windows 11 or later.
- Both devices need Quick Share installed and enabled. For Samsung PCs, Google’s support page directs users to the Samsung Quick Share app in Microsoft Store.
- Google lists Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet among the Windows requirements. It also lists Android 6.0 or later for the Android device.
Check the version and device type rather than assuming that any Windows PC can use the same setup. The 64-bit requirement applies to Windows 10 or later, while the ARM note is a separate condition: ARM-based PCs need Windows 11 or later. Samsung PCs have a vendor-specific app direction in Google’s guidance, so use the Samsung Quick Share app from Microsoft Store for that case.

Confirm that Quick Share is installed and enabled on both the Android device and the Windows PC. If either side is missing the app or is not enabled, visibility and close range alone will not make the devices appear to each other. Android 6.0 or later is the listed Android requirement for this combination.
Windows availability is restricted in some countries, and the supported regions or requirements can change. Check the current Google Windows guide if the app is unavailable or the PC does not meet a listed requirement. If the app cannot be obtained or the platform does not meet these requirements, repeated Bluetooth toggles will not address that compatibility limitation.
Check the Wi-Fi and network
For Android-to-Windows Quick Share, Google lists same-network connectivity as a requirement. A workplace or other managed network may block device-to-device sharing even when both devices have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.
Make sure Wi-Fi is on and that the devices meet the Windows guide’s same-network condition. The guide also lists Ethernet as an allowed Windows network connection, alongside Bluetooth and Wi-Fi requirements. A PC connected through Ethernet can therefore satisfy the listed network-interface condition, but the devices still need to meet the same-network requirement. If you are unsure whether a workplace network allows devices to communicate directly, test on a network you control using Google’s hotspot suggestion.

- Turn off Wi-Fi on the phone.
- Turn on the phone’s hotspot.
- Connect the Windows PC to that hotspot, then try discovery again.
If the PC appears on the phone’s hotspot but not on the usual network, the original network may be preventing devices from communicating with one another. This test can help isolate the issue; it does not establish that a router or other hardware purchase will fix it.
If the PC still does not appear while connected to the phone’s hotspot, continue through the other checks rather than concluding that the phone or PC is defective. Recheck both visibility settings, Bluetooth, the app and operating-system requirements, and the stated distance. The hotspot is a diagnostic test for network restrictions, not a substitute for meeting the other requirements.
Consider the PC’s Bluetooth capability
Google notes that a Windows PC without Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) extended advertising may not be discoverable on certain networks. In Google Android Help’s words: “If your Windows device doesn’t support Bluetooth low energy (BLE) extended advertising, other people can’t find and share with you on certain networks.” That limitation is conditional on the PC and network; the guidance does not establish that replacing a Bluetooth adapter will solve discovery.
This is a specific capability caveat, not a blanket explanation for every missing PC. It is especially relevant if the PC meets the listed app and operating-system requirements but fails to appear on some networks. Try the hotspot test to check whether the network is involved. Do not assume that buying a Bluetooth adapter or router is the standard fix: Google’s guidance does not say that an aftermarket adapter resolves the BLE extended-advertising limitation.
Keep notification problems separate from discovery
If the PC is listed but Windows does not show Quick Share notifications, check Focus Assist or Do not disturb and the Windows notification settings. Those settings address missing notification behavior; they do not explain why a sender’s device list does not include the PC.
In other words, first establish whether the PC appears in the sender’s list. If it does not, stay with the discovery checks. If it appears and the transfer or notification prompt is what is missing, check the Windows notification settings and Focus Assist/Do not disturb. This avoids changing unrelated settings when the actual issue is that the device is not discoverable.
If you’re sharing with Android or a Chromebook
For Android-to-Android and Android-to-Chromebook attempts, start with the receiver’s Android Receive mode or visibility setting, then check Bluetooth, screen lock, and distance. The Android help pages describe Quick Share availability on Android devices and Chromebooks, but the exact controls can differ by device. Use the interface and instructions available on the receiving device rather than assuming its menus match an Android phone.

Chromebooks are also supported, but the exact controls may not match the Android phone steps. Check the receiving Chromebook’s available Quick Share controls and use its own visibility interface. The Android visibility labels and menu path should not be assumed to exist in identical form on the Chromebook.
If a supported nearby Android device still cannot be found, Google documents QR-code sharing as a fallback. The feature’s availability and the path for scanning can vary by device; consult Google’s Android Quick Share instructions for the supported process.
QR-code sharing is a fallback for supported nearby Android devices, not a general fix for every Android, Chromebook, or Windows combination. If the option is not available on your device, continue troubleshooting discovery using the controls and requirements for that platform.
Reset Quick Share and device state
If visibility, Bluetooth, distance, and—when relevant—Windows networking all check out, refresh the connection in this order. These steps address a stuck or busy device without changing the underlying compatibility requirements.
- On the phone, turn Airplane mode on and then off.
- Close Quick Share and reopen it. On Windows, close and reopen the Quick Share app.
- If another transfer is in progress, let it finish before starting a new one.
- Restart the device, then repeat the receiver-visibility and discovery steps.
- On Android 12 or earlier, check that Location is enabled as well.
Use the steps as refreshes, not as substitutes for the earlier checks. For example, reopening the app cannot make an incompatible PC meet the Windows requirements, and restarting will not remove a managed network’s restriction. After each refresh, put the receiver back in its appropriate visible state and search again from the other device.
If another share is already underway, allow it to finish before starting the next attempt. A busy transfer can get in the way of troubleshooting a new share, so confirm that the devices are idle before judging whether discovery has recovered. For Android 12 or earlier, Google also calls out Location; check it if the other steps have not helped.

The table is a quick way to choose the correct troubleshooting path. If the receiver is a phone, inspect Android Receive mode or visibility. If the receiver is a Windows PC, check the Windows Device visibility menu as well as the Windows-specific network and compatibility conditions. For a Chromebook, start with the controls present on that device rather than copying an Android phone’s menu steps.

The figures and requirements above are from Google’s undated support pages and apply to the contexts stated in those pages. They are troubleshooting and compatibility guidance, not a promise that every device will appear at the stated distance. For Windows regional availability and the current requirements, refer to Google’s Android-to-Windows help page.
When to stop troubleshooting
If the receiver is visible, both devices have Bluetooth on, you have tested at the appropriate close distance, and the Windows-specific network checks are complete, compare the device combination against the listed requirements. A Windows device that does not meet the operating-system, architecture, app, or regional requirements may not be able to use the Windows workflow. A device’s BLE extended-advertising limitation can also affect discovery on certain networks.
There is no generally applicable purchase fix in Google’s guidance. A router or Bluetooth adapter may seem like a logical next step, but the support instructions do not establish that either will resolve a missing device. Use the visibility, connectivity, proximity, compatibility, and device-state checks above, and consult Google’s current help pages for the supported setup for your device.

Why doesn’t my Android phone appear in Quick Share?
Check the receiving phone’s Quick Share state first. Open Receive mode and keep that screen open, or use a visibility setting that permits the sender to find it. Turn on Bluetooth on both devices, unlock the receiving screen, and bring them within 30 cm (1 foot) while troubleshooting. On Android 12 or earlier, check Location if the basic steps do not help.
Does the receiving Android screen need to be unlocked?
It depends on the visibility option. Google says devices using the same Google Account can remain visible with Your devices even when the screen is off. Contacts visibility requires the receiving screen to be on and unlocked. For troubleshooting, unlock the receiver and keep Receive mode open while the sender searches.
How close should devices be for Quick Share?
Google’s Android troubleshooting guidance says to keep Android devices within 30 cm (1 foot). Its Android-to-Windows requirements page gives an up-to-5-metre (16-foot) distance requirement. These figures apply to different contexts; neither should be treated as a universal range guarantee.
Why can’t my Android phone find my Windows PC?
Check the Windows app’s Device visibility setting, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and the Windows requirements: 64-bit Windows 10 or later, with Windows 11 or later for ARM-based PCs. Google also lists Android 6.0 or later, same-network connectivity, and Bluetooth plus Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Some managed networks block device-to-device sharing; test by turning off the phone’s Wi-Fi, enabling its hotspot, and connecting the PC to it.

What if my Windows PC appears, but no Quick Share notification arrives?
That is different from a missing device in the sender’s list. If the PC appears but Windows does not show a notification, check Focus Assist or Do not disturb and Windows notification settings.
Should I buy a Bluetooth adapter or router to fix Quick Share?
Not as a standard first step. Google’s guidance points to visibility, Bluetooth, network configuration, distance, compatibility, and device state. It notes that a PC without BLE extended advertising may not be discoverable on certain networks, but does not say that replacing an adapter or router will fix the issue.
The Bottom Line
Make the receiving device visible first, then turn on Bluetooth at both ends and test at the distance appropriate to your device combination. For Android-to-Windows sharing, also verify the app and PC requirements and test whether the network blocks device-to-device communication. Refresh the app or device only after those checks, and do not assume new hardware is needed.
