Quick Share discovery usually fails because the device that should receive is hidden, Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi is unavailable, the devices are too far apart, or the local network blocks device-to-device traffic. Set the receiver to a visible mode, turn on Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi, unlock Android when it is receiving, move the devices close together, then refresh Quick Share and both radios. The sequence below separates phone-to-PC problems from PC-to-phone problems so you change the setting on the correct device.
Start by identifying which device cannot find the other
Discovery is directional. A PC can be visible while the phone is hidden, or the phone can be visible while the PC is set to No one. First decide which device is sending and which is receiving, then inspect visibility on the receiver.

Keep this distinction in mind through every step. Changing the sender’s visibility does not make a hidden receiver discoverable.

Google’s current Windows instructions specify a computer with a 64-bit version of Windows 10 or later and an Android device running Android 6.0 or later. ARM-based Windows devices require Windows 11 or later. These are compatibility requirements, not estimates of how often transfers succeed. See Google’s Android and Windows Quick Share requirements.

- If the PC is a Samsung computer, use Samsung’s Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store rather than assuming the Google Windows app is the correct package.
- Google lists Quick Share for Windows as available in the United States and most countries, but not Cuba, Iran, North Korea, or Syria. Regional availability can prevent installation or operation even when the hardware meets the requirements.
- On Android, use the built-in Quick Share feature. Menu wording can vary slightly by manufacturer and Android version.
If the Windows app cannot be installed at all, verify the Windows architecture and region before changing network settings. A 32-bit installation, an unsupported ARM version of Windows, or an unsupported country is an eligibility issue rather than a discovery glitch.
Make the Windows PC discoverable
When the phone is trying to send a file to the PC, the Windows computer is the receiver. Open Quick Share for Windows and review its Device visibility setting. Google provides four choices:

- Open Quick Share for Windows.
- Open the app’s Device visibility control.
- Select Everyone for the shortest practical test, or select the narrowest option that definitely includes the sending phone.
- Keep the app open and search again from Android.
If the PC appears after selecting Everyone, discovery is working and the earlier restriction was the cause. Return to Contacts or Your devices after the transfer if those settings better fit your privacy needs.
Visibility belongs to the receiving PC in this direction. Changing the Android phone’s sharing audience cannot expose a Windows computer that is set to No one, and closing the Windows app removes the receiver from the list even if its privacy choice is permissive.
Make the Android phone discoverable
When the PC is sending to Android, the phone is the receiver. Android’s Quick Share controls are described in Google’s Quick Share guide. The quickest diagnostic is Receive mode: the phone remains visible while that screen is open.
- Unlock the phone. Android receiving requires an unlocked screen.
- Open Quick Share from Android’s Quick Settings panel or Settings, depending on the device.
- Choose Receive or Receive mode, and leave that screen open while searching from Windows.
- If Receive mode is not offered, open the visibility control labeled Who can share with you or an equivalent option.
- For a temporary broad test, select Everyone for 10 minutes. Android automatically changes back to the previous visibility selection when the 10 minutes end.
The other Android visibility choices are typically Your devices, Contacts, and Everyone for 10 minutes. Use Everyone for 10 minutes only to isolate discovery; restore Your devices or Contacts afterward if that is your normal privacy setting.
If the phone disappears as soon as you leave Receive mode, that behavior is expected. Reopen Receive mode for each controlled test instead of assuming the radio has failed. Also keep the screen unlocked until the incoming request is accepted.

Verify Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, and screen state
Both devices need Bluetooth enabled. Turn it on from Windows Quick Settings or Settings and from Android Quick Settings, then retry discovery. Android must also remain unlocked when it is receiving.
Turn on Wi‑Fi on both devices and, where possible, connect them to the same Wi‑Fi network. Google’s Android-to-Windows instructions identify same-network Wi‑Fi as a requirement for normal operation. A phone may still show a saved network while its Wi‑Fi radio is disabled, so check the actual switch rather than only the network name.
- Do not test with one device in airplane mode unless you have deliberately re-enabled the required radios.
- Temporarily disable VPN or network-management software if it prevents local-device communication; re-enable it after testing if needed.
- Keep both devices awake during the first discovery attempt so a power-saving state does not interrupt the handshake.
Bluetooth is needed on both ends even when the file will ultimately use Wi‑Fi. A Bluetooth icon or a remembered pairing is not proof that the radio is currently enabled, so check the live toggle on each device after any restart or airplane-mode cycle.
Reduce the distance, then test for network isolation
Google gives 5 metres (16 feet) as the general distance requirement. For diagnosis, place the devices within 30 centimetres (1 foot) of each other. This closer test removes walls, desks, and marginal radio strength from the equation. The distances are Google’s operational guidance, not measured failure-rate statistics. Test on the normal Wi‑Fi network
- Connect both devices to the same Wi‑Fi network.
- Place them within 30 centimetres.
- Leave the receiver visible and unlocked where required.
- Search again and wait several seconds for the device list to refresh.
Use a phone hotspot when the network may isolate devices
Guest, hotel, school, and office networks can block traffic between clients even when both devices have internet access. Google’s suggested diagnostic is a phone-hotspot arrangement:
- Turn off Wi‑Fi on the Android phone.
- Turn on the phone’s mobile hotspot.
- Connect the Windows PC to that hotspot.
- Keep Bluetooth enabled on both devices, leave the receiver visible, and repeat the 30-centimetre test.
If discovery works through the hotspot but not on the original network, the original network’s client-isolation or firewall policy is the differentiator. You may need the network administrator to permit local device-to-device traffic; changing Quick Share visibility will not override that policy.
The hotspot test is comparative, not a permanent networking recommendation. It deliberately changes only the local network path while preserving the same devices, visibility choices, Bluetooth state, and close range. If both arrangements fail, continue with the reset and compatibility checks rather than blaming the office or home router.

Refresh Quick Share and the wireless connection
Use this reset sequence after visibility, Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, and distance are correct. It clears common transient states without changing files or accounts.

- Close Quick Share for Windows completely, then open it again.
- On Android, turn airplane mode on, wait a few seconds, and turn it off. Confirm Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi are on again afterward.
- Restart both the Windows PC and the Android phone if the devices still do not appear.
- Check that another person or another device is not currently sending to the intended receiver. Wait for that transfer to finish before starting a new discovery attempt.
- Repeat the search with the receiver’s visibility set to Everyone or Receive mode for the test.
Google documents closing and reopening Quick Share, cycling airplane mode, avoiding concurrent transfers, and restarting devices as Android troubleshooting steps in its Android Quick Share troubleshooting guidance.
Run the steps in order and test after each major change. If restarting makes the device appear, do not immediately change several privacy and network settings; the result indicates a transient app or radio state, while a hotspot-only success indicates a network-path problem.
When the device appears but no notification arrives
Discovery and notification delivery are separate. If the PC or phone appears in the sender’s list but the receiver never shows the incoming request, inspect Windows notifications rather than repeating network discovery.
- Open Windows Settings and go to System > Notifications.
- Make sure notifications are enabled globally.
- Find Quick Share in the app notification list and allow its notifications.
- Check Focus Assist or Do not disturb and temporarily turn it off, or create an exception for Quick Share.
- Send a small test file while the receiver is unlocked and the Quick Share window is open.
A successful appearance in the device list proves that at least the discovery path is functioning; a missing prompt points to notification suppression, a locked Android screen, or an in-progress transfer instead.

Google warns that a Windows device without Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) extended advertising support may not be findable on certain networks. This explains a pattern in which Quick Share works on one network or with one setup but the PC disappears on another. The requirement concerns the Bluetooth hardware and its driver capabilities, not merely whether a Bluetooth icon is present.
Google’s documentation does not identify a particular replacement adapter or promise that a generic Bluetooth dongle will fix the issue. Do not treat any unspecified adapter as a guaranteed solution. First reproduce the failure on a known permissive network, apply all visibility and proximity steps, and check the PC manufacturer’s Bluetooth specifications or support information for BLE extended advertising support.

If the PC is invisible everywhere, eligibility, the app state, visibility, or Bluetooth settings remain more likely than this network-specific caveat. If it is visible at home or through a hotspot but not on one managed network, record that pattern because it helps separate BLE and network-policy interactions from a defective Quick Share installation.
Use the symptom to choose the next test

Run a clean, controlled test
When several settings have changed, return to a known baseline instead of guessing. Use this short sequence:

- Set the receiver temporarily to Everyone, Everyone for 10 minutes, or Receive mode; keep Android unlocked.
- Turn on Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi on both devices and join the same network.
- Place the devices within 30 centimetres and wait for the list to refresh.
- If they remain invisible, repeat the test through the Android phone’s hotspot.
- Only after those comparisons, close and reopen Quick Share, cycle airplane mode, and restart both devices.
This order gives each result a clear meaning. Appearance after a visibility change points to privacy settings; appearance only on the hotspot points to network isolation; appearance only after a restart points to a transient app or radio state. No single test proves every part of the transfer path, so keep the direction and receiver constant while comparing results.

Everyone on Windows and Everyone for 10 minutes on Android are diagnostic settings, not required permanent configurations. Once the transfer succeeds, return each receiver to Your devices or Contacts if those settings match how you share. Android’s Everyone for 10 minutes setting reverts automatically; Windows visibility remains at the option you selected until you change it.
For future transfers, open the receiver first, confirm its visibility, unlock Android when necessary, and keep both devices on the same network and within normal range. This order avoids changing several variables at once and makes the next failure easier to isolate.
What to record if the problem persists
If every documented condition is satisfied, note the direction of the failed transfer, whether either device appears at all, the Windows edition and architecture, Android version, Quick Share app used, normal network type, hotspot result, distance, and Bluetooth hardware details. Also note whether the failure occurs on every network or only one. Those observations are more useful to a device manufacturer or network administrator than a general report that Quick Share is “not working.”

The official guidance supplies operational requirements and recovery steps, but it does not publish a named study or failure-rate percentage for Quick Share discovery. The 5-metre and 30-centimetre distances, the 10-minute Android visibility window, and the operating-system versions above should therefore be read as product guidance rather than performance guarantees. If every documented condition is satisfied and the PC still cannot be found, record the Windows edition, Android version, network type, Bluetooth hardware, and direction of the failed transfer before contacting the PC or phone manufacturer.

Why can my Android phone find some devices but not my Windows PC?

Why can Windows find my phone only when the phone is unlocked?
