Use the supplied PlayStation Link USB adapter—not the PS5’s ordinary Bluetooth pairing screen. The adapter is paired with the PULSE Explore earbuds out of the box. Turn on the PS5, place both earbuds in their charging case, insert the adapter into a USB Type-A port, remove both earbuds, and follow the on-screen setup. If the search times out, press the PS Link button on either earbud to start another search.
Work through the checks below in order. They begin with connection and placement checks, then software updates, and only afterward move to resets that can erase pairings or settings.
1. Confirm you are using the correct PS5 connection
PULSE Explore earbuds use PlayStation Link for the normal PS5 connection. The included PlayStation Link USB adapter is already paired to the earbuds. The PS5’s standard Bluetooth-device menu is not the setup path for this headset.
PlayStation Link and Bluetooth are separate connection paths. The earbuds can use Bluetooth with compatible devices, and some PlayStation Link devices can maintain a PlayStation Link connection and a Bluetooth connection at the same time. That capability does not change the documented PS5 setup: connect the console through the supplied PlayStation Link adapter.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the adapter and port
- Use the adapter that came with the earbuds, unless you are deliberately replacing a missing or faulty unit.
- Plug it into a working USB Type-A port on the PS5. A front USB port is a sensible first choice because PlayStation’s adapter guidance recommends front ports when rear placement is blocked or affected by nearby equipment.
- Remove USB hubs, extension hardware, or other adapters from the test path so the console is communicating directly with the PlayStation Link adapter.
A separately purchased adapter is not pre-paired. If you are using one, it requires PlayStation’s separate adapter-pairing procedure; buying another adapter is not the default fix for a setup problem with the original one.
Why the Bluetooth menu causes confusion
Seeing the earbuds in a phone’s Bluetooth list can make it seem logical to search for them under the PS5’s Bluetooth accessories screen. That checks a different radio connection, however. A Bluetooth pairing that works on a phone does not prove that the PlayStation Link adapter is working, and a PlayStation Link connection does not require adding the earbuds as an ordinary Bluetooth accessory on the console.
2. Repeat the documented first-time setup
The initial sequence is short, and changing its order can leave the earbuds waiting while the adapter is not ready. Starting over is often more useful than repeatedly pressing the earbud button at random.
Recommended Free Tools
- Turn on the PS5 and wait until the console is at its normal home screen.
- Put both earbuds in the charging case. Confirm they are seated and have enough charge to start; use the case and earbud battery indicators as your check.
- Insert the included PlayStation Link USB adapter into a PS5 USB Type-A port.
- Remove both earbuds from the case. Taking out only one can prevent the expected setup from completing.
- Follow the instructions shown on the PS5. When the adapter is connected, its indicator turns solid white.
The earbuds search for an available connection for approximately 30 seconds. If nothing is found, they turn off. This is a timeout, not proof that the earbuds are defective.
Retry after a timeout
- Wait for the earbuds to finish the failed search and power down.
- Press the PS Link button on either earbud to start searching again.
- Keep both earbuds out of the case and close to the console and adapter while the search runs.
A button press during the 30-second window is not the same as the longer reset described later. Use a normal press to search again; reserve a 12-second hold for the non-destructive reset.
What the solid-white adapter light tells you
The solid-white indicator is the useful checkpoint in this procedure: it shows that the adapter has reached its connected state. If the earbuds shut down after 30 seconds while the adapter never reaches that state, concentrate on the USB port, direct connection and software checks. If the adapter is solid white but the earbuds still time out, concentrate on earbud charge, both-earbud removal, the retry button press and the required updates.
3. Check power, seating and physical placement
Verify the earbuds can start
Dock both earbuds and check the charging-case and earbud indicators. An earbud that is not seated correctly may not charge or may fail to wake when removed. Clean, dry contact surfaces and reseat each earbud before trying the connection sequence again.

Test the pair together rather than trying to establish a permanent connection with only one earbud removed. The documented setup expects both earbuds to be docked first and then removed. If one side has no battery indication, leave both in the case long enough to charge and repeat the sequence.
Reduce USB obstruction and interference
- Try a front USB Type-A port if the adapter is behind the console, blocked by a cable, or crowded by other devices.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices temporarily. This makes it easier to identify whether the port or surrounding hardware is interfering with the adapter.
- Keep the earbuds near the PS5 during pairing. Once connected, you can return them to your normal seating position.
- Connect the adapter directly rather than through a hub, extension or intermediary accessory.
These checks do not erase any pairing information, so they should precede every reset. They also separate a placement problem from an earbud or adapter problem: if moving the adapter to a clear front port changes the result, leave the adapter there while completing updates and setup.
4. Update the PS5, earbuds and adapter
Connection failures can persist when the console and PlayStation Link devices are on incompatible or outdated software. Install available updates before changing pairings. Updating first also gives support a clear, current software state if you eventually need help.
- On the PS5, open Settings and use the system-software update controls to check for and install the latest PS5 update.
- With the PlayStation Link adapter connected, open the accessory or PlayStation Link device-software update controls in Settings. Follow the prompts for the earbuds and adapter.
- Leave both earbuds in the case when the update screen requires them to be docked, and do not remove the adapter or interrupt power during an update.
- Restart the PS5 after updates finish, then repeat the standard setup sequence from the beginning.
PS Link 2.0 requirement
In its PlayStation Link 2.0 troubleshooting guidance, PlayStation specifies that both earbuds and the included adapter should be on version 2.0 or newer. Check the displayed version for each component rather than updating only the adapter or only one earbud. If one earbud remains on an older version, complete the update process for that component before testing again.

The version check matters especially when one earbud connects and the other does not.
5. Perform the non-destructive earbud reset
If the adapter is detected but the earbuds still will not connect, use the earbud reset before attempting any reset that removes pairings. This reset does not clear PlayStation Link pairings, Bluetooth pairings, or audio settings.
- Remove both earbuds from the charging case.
- On one removed earbud, press and hold its PS Link button for at least 12 seconds.
- Repeat the same 12-second-or-longer hold on the other earbud.
- Place both earbuds back in the case.
- Remove them again and retry the PS5 setup.
Hold the button for the full minimum time. A brief press only starts a connection search and does not perform this reset. Reset each earbud separately; holding one button does not reset the other side.

Because this step retains pairings and audio settings, it is the safest reset to try after checking the port and software. It is also reversible in practical terms: after docking both earbuds, you can repeat the normal adapter-based setup without rebuilding every Bluetooth connection.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems6. Choose more disruptive resets only when necessary
Several procedures are described as resets, but they affect different hardware and erase different information. Do not jump to a paired-connection wipe or adapter reset simply because the first search failed.
| Procedure | Targets | What it changes | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earbud reset | Each earbud individually | Resets the earbuds while retaining PlayStation Link pairings, Bluetooth pairings and audio settings. | After setup, port, placement and update checks fail. |
| Paired-connection wipe | Earbud connection records | Deletes PlayStation Link and Bluetooth pairings and audio settings. You must pair devices again. | Only when retained pairing data appears corrupted and you are prepared to configure connections again. |
| Case reset | Charging case | Uses the case-specific reset procedure; the effect is different from resetting an individual earbud. | When case behavior or charging-case communication is the suspected problem. |
| Earbud/case synchronization | Relationship between earbuds and case | Re-synchronizes the earbuds with the case and also deletes PlayStation Link and Bluetooth pairings and audio settings. | When the earbuds and case are no longer operating as a matched set, and re-pairing is acceptable. |
| Adapter reset | PlayStation Link USB adapter | Clears PlayStation Link connections. The adapter then needs to be paired again. | When the adapter itself remains the failure point after console, port and earbud checks. |
PlayStation’s adapter-reset procedure uses a 30-second hold. Because the exact button sequence and confirmation differ from the earbud reset, follow the current adapter instructions rather than applying the 12-second earbud procedure to the adapter.
Before a pairing-clearing reset
- Record which devices were paired over Bluetooth so you can add them again.
- Make sure the PS5 and adapter have completed their software updates.
- Confirm that you have the official pairing instructions available for the reset you are about to perform.
- Understand that a reset can remove working connections; it is not a harmless retry.
- Try the non-destructive earbud reset first unless the documented symptom specifically points to the case or adapter.
7. If you are using a replacement or standalone adapter
The adapter supplied with the earbuds is pre-paired. A new standalone adapter is not. If the original adapter is missing, damaged, or conclusively faulty, the replacement must be paired through PlayStation’s separate adapter-pairing process before the PS5 can use it with the earbuds.
Do not treat a replacement adapter as a shortcut for a 30-second search timeout, an obstructed USB port, or outdated software. First establish that the included adapter cannot connect after the documented setup, front-port test, updates and non-destructive earbud reset.
A replacement is therefore a conditional solution, not a general upgrade or a second step in ordinary troubleshooting. If you do need one, plan for the additional pairing procedure; it will not inherit the original adapter’s out-of-box pairing automatically.
8. Diagnose the symptom without guessing at a hardware failure
The PS5 does not appear to detect the adapter
- Remove and reinsert the adapter directly into a front USB Type-A port.
- Temporarily disconnect other USB devices.
- Restart the PS5 and check for system and PlayStation Link device updates.
- If the adapter still produces no connected indication, test the official adapter-reset procedure only after understanding that it clears PlayStation Link connections.
Do not infer that the earbuds are faulty solely because the console does not react. At this stage the failure could be the port, the adapter connection or outdated device software. A direct front-port test gives you a cleaner result before you erase anything.

The adapter is present, but the earbuds time out
- Dock both earbuds, then remove both together.
- Press the PS Link button on either earbud after the 30-second search has ended.
- Keep the earbuds close to the adapter and confirm both have charge.
- Install the required software updates, including version 2.0 or newer for both earbuds and the included adapter where the PS Link 2.0 guidance applies.
Repeated timeouts are not a reason to hold the button for 12 seconds immediately. First distinguish a normal search timeout from a reset, then perform the non-destructive reset only if the documented retry still fails.
Only one earbud connects
- Return both earbuds to the case and confirm each is seated and charging.
- Remove both and perform the 12-second reset on each earbud.
- Retry with both earbuds out of the case.
- If the pair still does not behave as a matched set, consider the earbud/case synchronization procedure, remembering that it removes pairings and audio settings.
Check software for both individual earbuds rather than assuming the working side represents the other side. Synchronization is a later step because it has the same pairing and settings consequences as a wipe.
The earbuds work with Bluetooth but not the PS5
Bluetooth success does not verify the PlayStation Link path. The PS5 connection depends on the USB adapter, so repeat the adapter-based setup and check the adapter’s indicator and software version. Do not use the PS5’s ordinary Bluetooth menu as a substitute for PlayStation Link.
The earbuds used to work and stopped after another device was paired
PlayStation Link and Bluetooth maintain separate connection records. Return the earbuds to the case, restart the PS5, and initiate the PS5 connection with the adapter. If pairing records appear damaged, use the paired-connection wipe only after accepting that both PlayStation Link and Bluetooth pairings, along with audio settings, will be removed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. A low-risk decision path
For a quick, orderly diagnosis, use this sequence:
- Method: confirm you are using the included PlayStation Link adapter, not the PS5 Bluetooth menu.
- Port: connect it directly to a clear front USB Type-A port.
- Setup: dock both earbuds, insert the adapter, remove both earbuds and follow the screen.
- Retry: after the 30-second search ends, press the PS Link button on either earbud.
- Software: update the PS5, both earbuds and the adapter; verify version 2.0 or newer where PS Link 2.0 guidance applies.
- Reset: hold the PS Link button on each removed earbud for at least 12 seconds, dock them, and retry.
- Escalate: only then consider a case, synchronization, paired-connection or adapter reset, following the procedure for the specific component.
This order preserves the most information and avoids turning a simple port or timeout issue into a full re-pairing job.
10. When to contact PlayStation Support
Contact PlayStation Support if the supplied adapter and earbuds still fail after the documented setup, a front-port test, current software, the non-destructive earbud reset and the appropriate connection retry. Support can guide you through the separate case, synchronization or adapter procedures and determine the next service option.
The available procedures alone cannot establish whether a particular failure is caused by a damaged earbud, case, adapter or PS5 port. Avoid assuming a hardware defect before those checks are complete, and tell support exactly which indicator behavior, timeout and reset result you observed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do PULSE Explore earbuds connect to a PS5 through Bluetooth?
The normal PS5 setup uses the supplied PlayStation Link USB adapter. Bluetooth is a separate connection path for compatible devices, so do not use the PS5’s ordinary Bluetooth-device menu as a substitute for the adapter.
Why do the earbuds turn off after about 30 seconds?
They turn off when their approximately 30-second search finds no available connection. Press the PS Link button on either earbud to search again after the timeout.
What does a solid-white light on the adapter mean?
A solid-white adapter indicator is the documented connected state. If it never appears, check the direct USB Type-A connection, try a front port, remove other USB devices and update the PS5 and PlayStation Link devices.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will the 12-second earbud reset delete my pairings?
No. Holding the PS Link button on each removed earbud for at least 12 seconds resets the earbuds without clearing PlayStation Link pairings, Bluetooth pairings or audio settings.
Do both earbuds need to be updated?
Yes. PlayStation’s PS Link 2.0 troubleshooting guidance specifies version 2.0 or newer for both earbuds and the included adapter. Check each component rather than updating only one side.
Is a replacement USB adapter already paired?
No. The adapter included with the earbuds is pre-paired, but a standalone replacement requires PlayStation’s separate adapter-pairing procedure.
What is erased by an earbud/case synchronization?
Synchronization re-establishes the earbuds’ relationship with the case, but it also deletes PlayStation Link and Bluetooth pairings and audio settings. Use it only when you are prepared to pair and configure devices again.
When should I contact PlayStation Support?
Contact support after the included adapter setup, front-port test, software updates, retry and non-destructive earbud reset all fail. Support can identify the appropriate case, synchronization or adapter procedure and advise on service.
The Bottom Line
Use the included PlayStation Link USB adapter and the documented sequence: dock both earbuds, insert the adapter into a direct USB Type-A port, remove both earbuds and follow the PS5 prompts. After the 30-second search timeout, press the PS Link button to retry. Update the PS5, both earbuds and the adapter, then perform the separate 12-second reset on each earbud before considering any reset that erases pairings or settings. If the problem remains, contact PlayStation Support rather than assuming which component is defective.
