When a PSP game will not start or a save disappears in PPSSPP, the fix depends on where the failure occurs: one game or every game, a graphics backend or the disc image, an ordinary in-game save or a save state. Start by identifying that branch, then make one reversible change at a time. Load the original ISO, CSO or CHD file directly, restore PPSSPP defaults before troubleshooting graphics, and back up PSP/SAVEDATA before changing builds or attempting save recovery.
First identify what is failing
Do not treat “PPSSPP game won’t load,” “PSP game black screen PPSSPP,” “PPSSPP save not showing,” and “PPSSPP save state won’t load” as the same problem. Use this quick split before changing settings.

Record the game title, release region, PPSSPP version, operating system, image format, exact error or screen behavior, and whether the failing file is an in-game save or a save state. Those details determine which steps are safe.
When one game will not launch
Load the disc image as a file
Keep the game as an ISO, CSO or CHD and open that file from PPSSPP. Do not mount it as a folder or extract its contents into loose files. PPSSPP’s official black-screen guidance states: “Just run the ISO file directly in PPSSPP, do not extract it into files.” Some games depend on the original disc layout, so extraction can remove information the game expects. Use a legally obtained image; PPSSPP’s guidance on obtaining games is at https://www.ppsspp.org/getgames/.

- Open PPSSPP and browse to the folder containing the image.
- Select the ISO, CSO or CHD itself, not a subfolder created by extraction.
- If you previously extracted the image, test the original file or create a fresh dump from your own disc.
Check the image with Calculate CRC
In the game list, right-click the title on a desktop or long-press it on a touch device and choose Calculate CRC. PPSSPP 1.16 and later can display a green notice when an image is known to be valid. The notice is useful evidence, not a pass/fail certificate: the troubleshooting guide warns that an image without the green validity notice may still be valid. A mismatch therefore calls for another image or dump, while a missing green notice alone does not prove corruption. See PPSSPP’s black-screen troubleshooting guide.
Undo graphics speedhacks before experimenting
Black screens are often made worse by a previous performance tweak. Return graphics settings to their defaults, especially options in Graphics > Speedhacks. PPSSPP specifically warns that settings such as Skip buffer effects can break graphics in some games. Test the game after the reset before adding any enhancement.
Try one rendering backend
If the image is sound and the default settings still produce a black screen, change only the rendering backend, restart the game, and record the result. The exact menu labels vary by platform and PPSSPP version. The setup guidance recommends OpenGL on Android or Direct3D 11 on Windows when a black screen or immediate crash occurs; the troubleshooting page also lists OpenGL and D3D11 as Windows alternatives. If the change does not help, return to the previous choice rather than stacking several changes.

Do not assume a faster backend is a better one for every title. The practical choice is the backend on which that game launches and renders reliably on your device.
Compare another image format when compression is implicated
PPSSPP supports several disc-image formats, but there is no universal best format for troubleshooting. Use an uncompressed ISO as the compatibility reference if a compressed image behaves oddly.

These format descriptions and the CHD version note come from the PPSSPP setup guide. A format change is a controlled test, not a guarantee that every launch problem is caused by compression.

When several games fail or PPSSPP crashes
Reset the emulator before changing individual games
If multiple titles fail, or PPSSPP itself closes, treat the problem as global. Restore PPSSPP’s settings to defaults and test a known-good game. A shared configuration, driver or installation problem is more likely than simultaneous corruption of several images.

On Windows, install a current PPSSPP build over the existing installation if the program or configuration may be damaged. Updating does not automatically fix every graphics-driver issue, so also install a current driver from your GPU manufacturer. PPSSPP’s crash guide notes that driver problems can appear even when some games still work: PPSSPP keeps crashing.
Disable common crash triggers
After the reset, leave these features off while reproducing the crash:
- Cheats
- Networking or WLAN features
- Fast Memory
- A manually changed CPU clock
The official crash instructions identify these among common causes. Re-enable them individually only after the game is stable, so you know which change affects the result.
If PPSSPP itself will not open
A program-start failure is different from a game-load failure. On Windows, update the graphics driver, install a current PPSSPP build over the existing one, or change GraphicsBackend in the configuration file as described in the official troubleshooting instructions. On Android, the older troubleshooting guidance recommends updating through Google Play; use the current documentation for the exact device and build because storage and menu behavior vary.

Collect useful evidence before asking for help
Reproduce the failure with one game after the reset and record the PPSSPP version, device model, operating-system version, graphics backend, image format, CRC result and the last setting changed. The crash guide recommends supplying logs and system details when seeking further help. Avoid posting an entire save folder publicly; preserve a private backup first.
Find the ordinary in-game save
Understand the virtual Memory Stick
PPSSPP represents the PSP Memory Stick with a directory. Ordinary game saves normally live below PSP/SAVEDATA; they are not the same files as save states. The exact parent directory depends on the platform, installation type and storage permission. Use PPSSPP’s own command to locate it instead of assuming that every installation uses the same path.
- Desktop: choose File → Open Memory Stick in PPSSPP. An extracted portable Windows installation may keep a
memstickfolder beside the program. If Windows cannot write there, PPSSPP’s documentation says to check My Documents. - macOS and Linux: the documented default is
~/.config/ppsspp, subject to the installation and user account. - Android 11 and newer: use the storage folder granted when PPSSPP first launched. The Android storage guide recommends choosing or creating a
PSPfolder. Your ISO or CSO files can be stored elsewhere; the Memory Stick folder is what contains saves.

- Close the game and, ideally, PPSSPP so no file is being written.
- Copy the entire
PSP/SAVEDATAfolder to a separate location with a date in the backup name. - If you use save states, also copy the separate
PPSSPP_STATEfolder or files. - Work on a duplicate when testing a repair; keep the untouched backup read-only.
Do not overwrite a possibly good save with a downloaded or edited replacement before preserving your own files.
Why a save is missing or will not load
Verify the game ID and region
Save folders contain the game’s identifier. Compare the ID shown by PPSSPP with the prefix of the folder under PSP/SAVEDATA, and confirm that the release region matches. European, North American and Japanese releases can use different IDs and separate save formats. PPSSPP states: “Different regions have different codes – and often create different save files.” A save from a European release therefore may not load with the US release of the same title.
Do not rename an ID casually. A rename can make a folder appear to belong to the game while leaving the internal data incompatible. First test the exact game build and region that created the save.

Consider device-MAC binding only as a last resort
Some games bind savedata to the PSP’s device MAC address. PPSSPP names Invizimals as a known example and notes that other games may be affected. Changing the emulated MAC address is a specialized compatibility step, not a general missing-save fix:
- Preserve the current MAC value before changing it.
- Change it only when documentation or a known game-specific case points to MAC binding.
- Test the backed-up copy, not your only original save.
- Restore the original value if the game still fails or other saves stop working.
Rule out corruption
Save data can fail after hacked or edited data, cheats, a crash or power loss during saving, or a game bug. PPSSPP also warns that some games may delete save data when free space is low. A corrupted folder may cause a crash, glitches or a save that simply does not appear in the game’s load menu; there is no universal recovery for every case.
- Check free space on the device and in the folder containing the virtual Memory Stick.
- Temporarily disable cheats and retry with a clean game launch.
- Copy the suspect folder out of
PSP/SAVEDATAand test whether the game can create a new save. - If a new save works, restore the old folder only on a duplicate installation and compare behavior.
If the game can create new saves but the old one remains unreadable, keep the original backup and look for a game-specific repair method rather than claiming the data is recoverable.

Ordinary saves
An in-game save is written by the PSP title to the virtual Memory Stick, normally under PSP/SAVEDATA. It is the durable copy to carry between compatible PPSSPP installations and builds. Use the game’s own save menu and verify that the save appears after restarting.
Save states
A save state captures emulator and game memory outside the virtual Memory Stick, in the separate PPSSPP_STATE area. PPSSPP’s FAQ says states are bound to the PPSSPP version that wrote them. A state made by a development build may not load in a stable build, and a state from one version can fail after a major emulator change even when the ordinary save still works.

- Load the game and create a fresh in-game save.
- Quit cleanly and confirm the save is visible in the game’s load menu.
- Back up
PSP/SAVEDATA. - Copy save-state files separately if you still need them.
- Install or test the other build without deleting the original folders.
If a state will not load, return to the exact PPSSPP version that created it. If that is impossible, use the in-game save instead. The FAQ is available at https://ppsspp.io/faq.html.
A controlled troubleshooting sequence
Use this order so each result tells you something and every change can be reversed.
- Classify the failure. Test one known-good game and note whether PPSSPP itself opens.
- Protect saves. Back up
PSP/SAVEDATAand any state files before changing builds or folders. - Check the image. Load the ISO, CSO or CHD directly; do not use extracted files. Calculate CRC and record the result.
- Restore defaults. Remove graphics speedhacks and game-specific tweaks.
- Disable crash triggers. Turn off cheats, WLAN, Fast Memory and custom CPU clock.
- Test one backend. On Windows try Direct3D 11 or OpenGL; on Android try OpenGL when a black screen or immediate crash occurs.
- Compare formats. If a compressed image remains suspect, test an uncompressed ISO from a valid dump.
- Check the driver or installation. Update Windows graphics drivers and install a current PPSSPP build over the existing one if several games fail.
- For saves, locate Memory Stick. Use File → Open Memory Stick or the Android storage folder selected at first launch.
- Verify identity. Match game ID and region; investigate MAC binding only for a documented game-specific case.
- Separate state problems. Test the exact build that created the state, then fall back to the backed-up in-game save.
Stop when a change fixes the problem and keep a note of the working setting. Re-enable optional features one by one only after the baseline is stable.
When the basic checks do not solve it
Some titles have compatibility issues that cannot be corrected by a single setting. If one game still fails after a valid image, default settings, backend tests and a driver update, gather the title’s exact release region, CRC, PPSSPP version, device, operating system, backend and a reproducible description. Include logs and system details when requesting help, as PPSSPP’s crash guidance recommends.
For a save problem, preserve every original folder, state whether a new save can be created, and distinguish “the folder is not visible” from “the game sees it but reports it as corrupt.” That distinction prevents a storage-permission fix from destroying a potentially recoverable file.
Version and platform notes
Menu names and available graphics backends change between PPSSPP versions and operating systems. The PPSSPP FAQ listed version 1.20.4 as stable in an announcement dated 16 May 2026; check the project’s current download and documentation pages before assuming that label or every menu path is unchanged. The procedures above are intentionally reversible so they remain useful when a newer build moves an option.
Bottom line
For a launch failure, load the original image directly, calculate its CRC, reset graphics tweaks and test one backend at a time. For a missing save, open the correct virtual Memory Stick, verify the game ID and region, and protect the original folder before any recovery attempt. Keep ordinary in-game saves as your primary backup because save states are separate and tied to the PPSSPP version that created them.
