If a PS5 game shows a padlock, disappears from your library, or will not confirm its license, first check which account or subscription grants access. Then restore the license at Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. This restore does not affect saved data, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment / PlayStation Support. If that does not work, check console sharing, PSN and network status, system software, and the specific error code before trying Safe Mode or reinstalling anything.
Why a PS5 game can appear locked
A padlock does not, by itself, mean a purchase has vanished. The PS5 must be able to verify that the account using the game has a valid right to it. That right may come from a direct purchase, an eligible PlayStation Plus benefit, or another user’s enabled Console Sharing and Offline Play setting. A failure to verify can result in a locked game even when the underlying purchase or access right still exists.
It also matters where the problem occurs. A license-confirmation error concerns access verification; a download or installation error concerns getting the game onto the console; and a game-start error can arise after the title is installed. The same restore step may be relevant in more than one case, but the error code and point of failure determine what else to try.
Use those two questions to narrow the problem: who grants access? and when does the failure happen? If the answer is a purchase, start with the purchasing account and transaction history. If access depends on PlayStation Plus, verify membership and catalog eligibility. If another user bought the game, check that user’s sharing setting. Then match the error code to a license, network, download, or launch procedure instead of repeating unrelated steps.

Start with the account or subscription that owns access
For a game you bought
- On the PS5, sign in to the account that purchased the game. A different profile may not have the purchase entitlement.
- Check that account’s transaction history and confirm the transaction succeeded. If the game is absent from the expected account’s history, check the other accounts that may have been used to buy it.
- If the purchase is confirmed, restore licenses using the steps in the next section. If it is not present, do not assume that changing console settings will transfer ownership between accounts.
Keep the purchase check separate from the restore step. License restoration can refresh license information associated with an account, but it cannot turn a different account into the purchaser. If you find the transaction under another account, sign in there for the ownership check and use that account’s sharing setting if other users on this PS5 need access.
For a PlayStation Plus game
Check that the account’s PlayStation Plus membership is active. If access came from a catalog title, check that the game remains in the catalog; catalog availability can change. A game accessed through a subscription is not the same as a game permanently purchased from the Store, so a lock may reflect eligibility rather than a corrupted license.
In practical terms, a successful license restore does not replace an active membership or guarantee access to a title that is no longer in the applicable catalog. Verify those conditions first, then restore licenses if the access right should still be valid. If you bought the game separately as well, check the purchasing account’s transaction history rather than relying on the subscription route.

For a game bought by another user on the PS5
The purchaser must enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the PS5 where other users are trying to play the purchaser’s eligible content. This setting shares access; it does not move the purchase to another account or make the other user the owner. Continue to the sharing check below if the purchasing user’s account is different from the one currently playing.
Restore licenses on PS5
Restoring licenses is an appropriate early troubleshooting step for a padlock, a missing game or add-on, and some game crashes. Sony says the operation will not affect data. It checks the licenses associated with the account; it does not replace the ownership, subscription, or sharing checks above.
- Sign in to the account whose license you want to restore.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- Select the relevant licenses and choose Restore. Wait for the process to finish, then try opening the game or add-on again.
You can also highlight the affected game on the home screen or in the game library, press the Options button, and choose Restore License. Sony Interactive Entertainment / PlayStation Support gives both methods in its official guide, “How to restore licenses on PlayStation consoles.”
If the game still shows a padlock after restoring, do not immediately delete it or reinstall system software. Recheck the account that owns the entitlement, confirm subscription or sharing eligibility if relevant, and check PSN status. If the game is missing rather than simply locked, look for it in the library while signed in to the account expected to own it, and also verify that the add-on or game is the correct item.

Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play for another user’s game
Use this check when the game belongs to a different account on the console. The purchaser should sign in and review the setting; changing it while signed in as a non-owner will not make that account the purchaser.
- On the purchasing account, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Review the current state. Select Enable on the PS5 where the purchaser wants to share access, or select Disable if that console should no longer be the sharing-enabled PS5.
- If another PS5 is already using the setting, disable it there before enabling it on the target console. Sony states that Console Sharing and Offline Play can be enabled on only one PS5 at a time.
- Return to the affected user’s profile and try the game again.
Sony says the first PS5 used to sign in is automatically allowed for this setting. If the target PS5 is not the active sharing console, enabling it there may require disabling the setting on the other PS5 first. This is a console-sharing change, not a way to transfer a purchase between accounts.
Think of the sharing setting as a choice of which PS5 can share the purchasing account’s eligible content with other users. It is not a simultaneous sharing switch for several consoles. If the owner needs to move sharing to this PS5, check the other console first; changing settings on the player’s profile alone cannot establish another user’s ownership.
Check PSN, the network, and system software
License confirmation may fail because the console cannot reach a service, or because the service is temporarily unavailable. Check PlayStation Network status before making disruptive changes. If there is a service issue, wait and retry rather than assuming the account has lost ownership.

- Install the latest PS5 system software available to the console.
- If the error specifically indicates a server connection or license confirmation failure, restart the router and modem using the code-specific sequence below.
- After service or network conditions improve, retry the game. If it still fails, restore licenses and continue with the console troubleshooting steps.
The timing and pattern can help distinguish a temporary service problem from a console-specific one. A license error that appears alongside a PSN service issue may be worth retrying later. A single failed download points instead to download/install troubleshooting, while a title that remains unable to start after access checks may need later console steps such as cache clearing or a database rebuild.
Follow the steps for the displayed error code
Use the exact code shown on the console to choose the relevant branch. Sony’s official error-code guidance distinguishes license confirmation from a failed download or installation.

The distinction matters: CE-109245-1 and CE-109258-5 are license-confirmation branches, while CE-106487-6 concerns a download or installation. A download retry is relevant to the latter, not a substitute for checking the account on a license-confirmation error. If you do not see one of these codes, use the steps matching the actual message and consult Sony Support for that specific code.

CE-109245-1: check the owning account and sharing
For CE-109245-1, Sony says the content license information cannot be confirmed. Restart the PS5, sign in with the account that owns the content, and enable Console Sharing and Offline Play. If another user owns the title, make sure the sharing setting is being changed on the purchaser’s account, not the account that only wants to play. Then retry the content.

For this code, Sony specifically advises turning off the router and modem for at least five minutes before restarting them. A quick restart that leaves the equipment powered off for less time does not follow that instruction. After the network is back, restore the license and retry; Sony also advises trying again after a while when the problem may be temporary.
Follow the sequence in order: check PSN status, restart the PS5, power off the router and modem for five minutes or longer, restart the network equipment, restore licenses, and test again. If service status or the connection appears temporarily affected, another attempt later may be more useful than repeatedly changing account settings.
CE-106487-6: treat it as a download or installation failure
If the download itself failed, address the failed item rather than repeatedly attempting to launch it. After updating the system and restoring licenses, delete the failed download and retry it. If the retry still fails, move to the Safe Mode procedure. This code’s documented steps do not establish that the account has lost ownership.
Use Safe Mode if account and service checks do not resolve it
Sony’s locked-game and game-start guidance includes clearing the PS5 cache and rebuilding the database in Safe Mode after checking ownership, sharing, connectivity, system software, and licenses. These are later console troubleshooting steps, not a substitute for confirming the account has access.

- Turn off the PS5, then start it in Safe Mode using the console’s Safe Mode startup procedure.
- Choose the options to Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, following the on-screen prompts for the relevant operation.
- After the console restarts, test the game again. For a title that still will not start, Sony’s game-start guidance also lists deleting and redownloading it.
Safe Mode troubleshooting can address local console or database problems, but it cannot create a purchase entitlement or make an expired subscription eligible. If the access checks are still unresolved, return to the account and sharing steps rather than treating a database rebuild as proof of ownership.
Use this stage when the basic entitlement and service checks are already in order and the issue persists on the console. It is not the first response to a missing transaction, lapsed membership, catalog change, or another PS5 currently using the owner’s sharing setting. For CE-106487-6, the database step follows the system update, license restore, and delete-and-retry steps Sony lists for the failed download.

When to delete and redownload—or reinstall system software
If a particular game continues to fail at launch after the earlier checks, Sony lists deleting and redownloading the game as a further game-start step. Use the game tile or library controls to remove the installed game, then download it again from the account that owns or is eligible to access it. Before deleting, distinguish the game installation from saved data; do not select a saved-data deletion option as part of removing the game.
Sony’s game-start troubleshooting also lists reinstalling system software for persistent issues. This is a much more consequential step than restoring a license or rebuilding the database. Back up data before reinstalling system software and follow Sony’s current instructions for that process. Reinstallation is a late console recovery measure; it is not guaranteed to fix an account entitlement or a PlayStation Network availability problem.
There is no accessory or replacement part that can correct a digital ownership record. Keep the remedy proportional to the failure: verify the entitlement for account access, follow the matching network steps for a server-related code, retry the download for an installation error, and reserve Safe Mode or a system software reinstall for persistent console-side trouble.
What to give PlayStation Support
If ownership, subscription eligibility, sharing, license restoration, network status, and the relevant console steps have not fixed the error, contact PlayStation Support. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance asks players to provide information that lets support identify the entitlement and reproduce the failure.
- The exact error code and message shown on screen.
- What happens when you try to download or start the game, and the steps that reproduce it.
- The date and time of an attempt, including the time zone if useful.
- A screenshot or video of the error, if possible.
- Which account owns or provides access to the game, and which account is trying to play it.
Keep the distinction between a purchase, a subscription benefit, and another user’s shared access clear when describing the issue. That helps support direct the case toward the purchase record, subscription eligibility, console-sharing state, or a technical failure rather than treating them as interchangeable.

Why is my PS5 game locked even though I bought it?
A padlock alone does not prove the purchase disappeared. Sign in to the account that made the purchase and check its transaction history to confirm the transaction succeeded. If it is confirmed, restore licenses. If the game was purchased on another account, that account remains the owner; check its sharing setting if other users on this PS5 need access.
How do I restore licenses on PS5, and will it delete my data?
Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, select the relevant licenses, and choose Restore. You can also highlight the game on the home screen or in the library, press Options, and choose Restore License. Why can’t my PS5 confirm the game license?

Sony says Console Sharing and Offline Play can be enabled on only one PS5 at a time. If another PS5 is currently using it, disable the setting there before enabling it on the target console. The feature shares eligible access from the purchasing account; it does not transfer ownership.
What should I do for CE-109258-5 or CE-106487-6?
For CE-109258-5, check PSN status, restart the PS5, power off the router and modem for at least five minutes, restart them, restore licenses, and try again later if needed. CE-106487-6 concerns a download or installation: update system software, restore licenses, delete and retry the failed download, then use Safe Mode to clear cache and rebuild the database if it still fails.
When should I contact PlayStation Support?
Contact PlayStation Support if the entitlement, sharing, license restore, PSN/network, and relevant console steps do not resolve the issue. Provide the exact code and message, what happens and how to reproduce it, the date and time of an attempt, and a screenshot or video if possible.
The Bottom Line
A PS5 padlock is a prompt to check access, not proof that a purchase is gone.
