A PS5 game crash is not one diagnosis. First record the exact error code or message, whether one game or several are affected, when the failure occurs, whether the console shuts down, and whether the title is installed on USB extended storage. Then work from reversible checks—restart, update, storage location, licenses, and a clean reinstall—before using Safe Mode. Safe Mode contains both non-destructive repairs and options that erase data, so the menu choice matters.
This guide separates game-launch failures, system-wide freezes, disc-reading problems, and overheating symptoms. It follows current PlayStation Support guidance for PS5 consoles; menu labels can change as system software evolves.
Classify the failure before changing anything
Write down what happens in a repeatable test. Note the game title and edition, digital or disc format, the exact point of failure (launch, loading screen, a particular level, online connection, or after an update), the complete code, and whether the PS5 remains responsive. If possible, capture a screenshot or short video. PlayStation Support asks for the error code or message, a description, steps to reproduce the issue, and visual evidence when you contact it.
| What you observe | What to check first | Why this branch is different |
|---|---|---|
| Only one game crashes or will not start | That title’s update, license/account guidance, installation location, and code-specific support page | A single-title failure can be confined to the game or its data; it does not by itself establish a console hardware fault. |
| Several games or PS5 features fail | System-software update, storage health, Safe Mode repair tools, and whether the console freezes outside games | Multiple affected applications justify system-level troubleshooting rather than repeatedly reinstalling one title. |
| The console locks up, restarts, or powers off | Whether there is an overheating warning, blocked ventilation, or a system error; then use Safe Mode if it can start | A power-off or full freeze involves the console state, not just a game process. |
| A physical disc is rejected or unreadable | Disc orientation, visible dirt or damage, another disc test, and disc-care guidance | Disc-reading faults require a physical-media test; downloaded games follow a different path. |
| The game is on USB extended storage | Move the PS5 game to console storage or an installed M.2 SSD | PS5 games stored on USB extended storage must be moved before they can be played. |
These categories are triage, not proof of a particular failed component. A title may expose a system problem, and a system update may affect only one game.

Start with reversible checks
Perform the following in order, stopping when the symptom is resolved. Keep the exact code visible if one appears; a generic “PS5 crash” label is not a substitute for the code’s own instructions.
- Restart the PS5. Use the normal power menu when the console responds. If it is completely unresponsive, hold the power button until it turns off, then start it again. Avoid interrupting power repeatedly unless the console cannot shut down normally.
- Install available system and game updates. Use the PS5 system-software update control and the affected game’s update command. Retry the same reproducible action after each update so you know which change helped.
- Check account and license guidance for a launch failure. If the title is locked, shows ownership or entitlement text, or fails after an account change, follow Sony’s current instructions for restoring licenses and confirming the purchasing account. Do not assume a license refresh repairs a crash with a different code.
- Reinstall only the affected game when Sony’s guidance calls for it. Delete the local game installation, download or install it again, and let all updates finish before testing. Save data is separate from the game application, but verify your backup or cloud-save status before deleting anything.
- Check where the game is installed. A PS5 game on USB extended storage cannot be played from that location. Move its game data to PS5 console storage or an M.2 SSD installed in the console, then retry.
- For a disc edition, test the disc branch below instead of treating it like a download. A dirty or unreadable disc can stop installation or launch even when the console and downloaded games work.
None of these steps is a guaranteed cure for every freeze or crash. If the exact code has its own PlayStation Support page, use that sequence before making broader system changes.
Use the exact PS5 error code
PlayStation’s PS5 error index covers different classes of problems, including updates, network access, account functions, and application or system data. Search the complete code, including every letter, number, and hyphen, and follow the page for that code. Instructions for one code can be inappropriate for another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsExample: CE-109573-5
PlayStation describes CE-109573-5 as “An error occurred when starting the game on your PlayStation®5 console.” Its documented sequence is to restart the console, delete and reinstall the game, rebuild the database if the problem remains, and update system software if it still persists. Treat that sequence as specific to CE-109573-5; it is not a universal explanation for every launch crash.
Example: CE-108262-9
PlayStation describes CE-108262-9 as an error reading system software or application data. Its guidance is to update system software, reinstall the game or application when the error appears after launch, rebuild the database, and, if the error continues, reset the console. A reset erases console data, so PlayStation advises backing up first whenever that is possible.
If your code is different, do not mix these examples into your repair plan. Record whether the error appears before the game opens, after launch, during a particular action, or across several applications; that context helps Support select the correct page.

Move PS5 games off USB extended storage
USB extended storage can hold PS4 games and PS5 game data, but PS5 games must be moved to PS5 console storage or an M.2 SSD to play. If a title installed on USB storage will not start, use the PS5’s storage-management controls to move the game, wait for the transfer to complete, and launch it from the new location. Do not format the USB drive as a first response: formatting removes its stored games and data.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf the same title works from console or M.2 storage, leave it there while you investigate the USB device. Compare the next step by risk and fit
When several possible fixes are available, choose the one that matches the symptom and carries the least irreversible impact. This comparison is more useful than trying every menu item in sequence.
| Action | Best fit | Reversibility and caution |
|---|---|---|
| Restart | A temporary lockup or one failed launch | Fully reversible; use the normal shutdown path when possible. |
| Update system or game | A failure that began after a known update or an outdated installation | Normally preserves user data; do not interrupt a system update. |
| Restore licenses | A locked title, entitlement message, or account change | Does not replace code-specific crash troubleshooting. |
| Reinstall one game | One title repeatedly fails after launch or has damaged local application data | Removes the application; verify saved-data backups first. |
| Move from USB storage | A PS5 game installed on USB extended storage | Preserves the game, but the transfer can take time; do not disconnect the drive. |
| Repair Console Storage | Storage symptoms or a PS5 that does not start properly | PlayStation says this option does not erase data. |
| Clear cache or rebuild database | System-feature problems, performance drops, or persistent organization/launch issues | Maintenance tools, not a substitute for a code page; read on-screen notices. |
| Reset or reinstall system software | Last-resort system recovery directed by Sony or Support | Deletes user data. Back up before selecting either reset option. |
| Clean or test another disc | A physical disc is not recognized or will not install | Applies only to physical media, not downloaded games. |
| Cool and ventilate | An overheating warning, heat-related shutdown, or blocked vents | Turn the console off first and escalate if the symptom returns. |
The exact error code has priority over this general comparison. If the code page tells you to take a particular action, follow that page and record the result before trying an unrelated option.
Use Safe Mode without confusing repair and reset
Safe Mode exposes maintenance tools that are not available in the normal interface. PlayStation Support warns: “Some Safe Mode options will result in the loss of data.” Back up saved data and other important content before selecting a destructive option. A reset or system-software reinstall is not an early, casual fix for one crashing game.
Enter Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 off by holding the power button for three seconds. The power indicator flashes briefly and then the console turns off.
- After it is off, press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first beep.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable, then press the PS button.
If the controller is connected wirelessly, Safe Mode may not accept its input; use a data-capable USB cable.

What each Safe Mode option does
| Safe Mode option | Use it for | Data impact |
|---|---|---|
| Repair Console Storage | Storage-related symptoms or a console that does not start properly | PlayStation says this does not erase data. |
| Update System Software | Installing a system update when the normal interface cannot complete it | Not presented as a user-data reset, but do not interrupt the update. |
| Clear System Software Cache | System-feature problems or a noticeable performance drop | Clears temporary cache information, not your games or saves. |
| Rebuild Database | Scanning the drive and recreating the content database after persistent launch or organization problems | It is not the same as a reset; follow the on-screen warning and keep a backup. |
| Reset PS5 | Last-resort software recovery after code-specific and non-destructive steps fail | Deletes user data. Back up first. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Reinstalling the system software when ordinary recovery cannot resolve a system problem | Deletes user data and reinstalls the operating system. Use current PlayStation instructions and a backup. |
For a single-game crash, begin with the title’s code page and ordinary reinstall guidance. Consider Repair Console Storage, cache clearing, or database rebuilding only when the symptom fits those tools or the code page directs you there. Never select either reset option merely because “rebuild database” sounds ineffective; they have different effects.
Run a controlled retest after each change
Testing the same way each time prevents a temporary improvement from being mistaken for a fix. First note the title, save slot or level, network state, and the action that triggers the failure. After one change, restart if instructed, launch the same title, and repeat that action. Then test a second game or a system feature. If the original title works but another application now fails, record both results rather than assuming the first change solved the console-wide issue.
Do not stack several destructive changes together. For example, moving a game, rebuilding the database, and resetting the console in one session makes it impossible to know which step mattered and can erase evidence Support needs. Keep a simple log with the date, code, step, and result. If an update is downloading, let it finish before judging whether the game still crashes.

When a physical disc is not read
Use this branch for a disc that is not recognized, will not install, or repeatedly fails while other downloaded games work. Insert the disc in the correct orientation for your console model. Remove it and inspect both sides under good light. Clean it with a soft, clean cloth, wiping from the center toward the edge rather than using abrasive material or liquid cleaners.
- Reinsert the cleaned disc and wait for the console to identify it.
- Try another game disc, Blu-ray, or DVD. If another disc works, the original medium is the leading suspect; if none work, continue with console troubleshooting.
- If PlayStation’s disc-reading guidance directs it, enter Safe Mode and rebuild the database.
- Follow the current PlayStation system-software reinstall path only after the preceding steps and after backing up data.
A soft microfiber disc-cleaning cloth is appropriate for this narrow physical-media task. It will not repair a downloaded game’s crash, a corrupted system database, or a console-wide freeze.
When the PS5 overheats or shuts down
Do not diagnose overheating solely from one game closing. Use this branch when the PS5 displays an overheating warning, becomes unusually hot and shuts down, or powers off in a way that coincides with heat and restricted airflow.

- Turn the console off and allow it to cool completely.
- Move it to a well-ventilated location with clearance around the vents.
- Ensure dust, furniture, and other objects are not blocking the intake or exhaust openings.
- Start it again only after it has cooled, then check whether the same workload causes another warning or shutdown.
If overheating or unexplained shutdown continues, use PlayStation Repairs or contact PlayStation Support. Do not open the console or apply unofficial cooling modifications based only on a game crash; the cited guidance does not establish a particular component failure or a universal accessory fix.
Decide whether the problem is local or system-wide
After the low-risk checks, test deliberately rather than launching the same title over and over. Start another installed game, open a system feature, and, for a disc console, test another disc. Record the result of each test.
- Only one title still fails: preserve its exact code, reinstall status, storage location, update state, and reproducible trigger. Continue with that game’s PlayStation guidance.
- Several titles fail but the system interface works: check system software, storage location and storage repair, then use the Safe Mode tool that matches the symptom.
- The interface also freezes or the console cannot start normally: use Safe Mode, beginning with non-destructive options. A reset is a later recovery step and requires a backup.
- Failure follows a disc: keep the investigation in the physical-media branch and compare with another disc.
- Failure follows heat or a power-off: cool and ventilate the console, then escalate if the behavior returns.
This pattern is a practical triage method based on Sony’s separate game, storage, Safe Mode, disc, and overheating instructions. It does not prove whether the underlying cause is software, storage, media, or hardware.

Contact PlayStation Support or use PlayStation Repairs when the documented steps do not resolve the problem, the console remains unstable, or overheating and shutdown recur. Include:
- the complete error code and message, copied exactly;
- the game title, digital or disc format, and whether one or multiple games are affected;
- the point at which it fails and precise steps that reproduce it;
- whether the game is on console storage, an M.2 SSD, or USB extended storage;
- whether the PS5 freezes, restarts, powers off, or shows an overheating warning;
- system and game update status;
- every step already attempted, including any Safe Mode option selected; and
- a screenshot or video when the console permits one.
Keep backups current before any reset or system-software reinstall. Use the current PlayStation instructions for your region and console model, because support pages and menu labels can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do first when a PS5 game crashes?
Record the exact code, restart the console, install system and game updates, and follow the PlayStation page for that code. For a single title, check licenses, storage location, and the official reinstall guidance before using Safe Mode.

Can a PS5 game run from USB extended storage?
PS4 games can run from compatible USB extended storage, but PS5 games must be moved to PS5 console storage or an installed M.2 SSD before they can be played.
Does rebuilding the PS5 database delete games or saves?
Rebuild Database is different from Reset PS5 and is not presented as a user-data wipe. Read the current Safe Mode warning, keep a backup, and do not confuse it with either reset option, which deletes user data.
When should I reset my PS5?
Use Reset PS5 only after the exact code instructions and non-destructive troubleshooting fail or PlayStation Support directs you to it. Back up first because reset options delete user data; reinstalling system software also reinstalls the operating system.

How do I fix a PS5 that will not read a game disc?
Confirm the disc orientation, clean it with a soft clean cloth, and test another game disc, Blu-ray, or DVD. Keep this investigation separate from downloaded-game crashes and follow PlayStation’s Safe Mode or reinstall steps only when directed.
Is one crashing game proof that my PS5 hardware is failing?
No. A single-title failure can involve the game’s data, an update, licensing, or storage location. Test another game and system feature, follow the exact code guidance, and escalate if multiple applications or the console itself become unstable.
What should I do if the PS5 overheats and shuts down?
Turn it off, let it cool, move it to a well-ventilated location, and clear blocked vents. If warnings or shutdowns return, contact PlayStation Support or use PlayStation Repairs rather than opening the console or adding an unverified accessory.
What information will PlayStation Support need?
Provide the complete code and message, title and edition, digital or disc format, reproducible steps, affected storage location, update status, whether other games fail, any freeze or shutdown behavior, steps already tried, and a screenshot or video if available.

The Bottom Line
Start with the exact code and the least destructive step that fits the symptom. Update, restart, verify licenses, move PS5 games off USB storage, and reinstall only when indicated. Use Safe Mode deliberately—Repair Console Storage, cache clearing, and database rebuilding are not the same as Reset PS5—and back up before any option that can erase data. Disc-reading and overheating symptoms need their own branches. If crashes, freezes, or shutdowns continue, give PlayStation Support a precise reproduction record.
