Open Products → Needs attention in Google Merchant Center, filter by Image, and open the affected offer’s issue label. Then test the submitted image_link and the image it serves, correct the specific URL, format, content, size, or quality problem, and save the item or reupload corrected feed data. Google says many changes take 24–72 hours to appear on Needs attention; replacing an image while keeping the same URL can take up to six weeks to be detected.
Start with the exact issue label
An image disapproval is not one generic error. Merchant Center identifies the failure with labels such as Broken image link, Missing product image, Invalid image link, Invalid image format, Image too small, Low image quality, or Text on image. The label determines which correction is appropriate, so change the asset only after reading it.
- Sign in to Merchant Center and open Products.
- Select Needs attention.
- Apply the Image filter.
- Open an affected product to see the issue details, or download the affected-product CSV if you are correcting a group.
Record the product ID, variant, current image_link, and issue label before editing. That makes it possible to verify that the corrected item, rather than a similar variant, is the one being reprocessed.

Repair a broken, missing, or invalid image URL
Use a complete, direct URL
The image_link attribute must contain a complete URL beginning with http:// or https://. It should resolve directly to the image file, not to a product page, an HTML error page, a login screen, or a download script that does not reliably return image bytes. The URL’s extension should match the encoded file format.

Test the address in a private browser window and from outside your store’s authenticated session. A URL that works only after a customer logs in is not suitable for Google’s crawler. Also test it after clearing cookies and without a session token. Check for:
- A 404 or other error response.
- Redirect chains or redirects to a different product.
- Expiring, signed, or session-based URLs.
- Spaces or other characters that have not been URL-encoded.
- Firewall, hotlink protection, geoblocking, or authentication that blocks crawlers.
- A response whose content is HTML or a script rather than an image.
Google’s image-link guidance says robots.txt must allow both Googlebot and Googlebot-image to fetch the image. Review rules at the domain, directory, CDN, and image path levels. URLs routed through ASP, PHP, or ColdFusion scripts can fail to be fetched, so a stable static image URL is safer when your platform supports one.
Check the response, not just the browser preview
A browser may display a cached copy even when Google receives an error. Request the URL from a cache-free session and inspect the server response. Confirm that the server returns a successful response and an image content type, and that the bytes are complete. If your CDN serves different responses by user agent, country, or referrer, test the same public endpoint under those conditions and remove the restriction that affects Google’s crawler.

If you replace the file but leave the old filename and URL, Google may continue to see its previously crawled image. Google says detecting and crawling a changed image at the same URL can take up to six weeks. When the image content changes, change the filename and URL as well, update image_link, and submit the corrected product. Keep the new URL stable after publishing it; repeatedly changing URLs creates another recrawl problem.
Correct the image file and encoding
Google’s image-link guidance accepts JPEG, WebP, PNG, GIF, BMP, and TIFF. The extension must match the file’s actual encoded format. For example, do not name a PNG file with a .jpg extension or return an HTML error document with an image filename.
The same guidance sets a maximum of 64 megapixels and a maximum file size of 16 MB. If an export exceeds either limit, create a properly encoded version within those limits rather than relying on server-side resizing that may return an unsupported response.

- Open the original file in an image editor or asset manager and verify its actual format.
- Export it in one of the supported formats.
- Use a matching filename extension.
- Confirm that the published URL returns that file, not a fallback page or a thumbnail service response.
- Recheck the final pixel dimensions and file size after export.
Do not treat a successful upload to your store as proof that Google can fetch the file. Merchant Center evaluates the public URL and the response it receives.
Make the primary image show the product being sold
Use the correct product and variant
The main image must clearly depict the product represented by the offer. A color, size, pack count, or model mismatch can make an otherwise valid file irrelevant. Compare the image with the submitted title, identifiers, variant attributes, and landing page. Do not use a generic category picture when the offer is for a specific item.
Do not submit any of these as the primary product image:
- A “Coming soon” or “No image available” graphic.
- A store logo, stock icon, or placeholder.
- An unrelated product or a different variant.
- A graphic that communicates availability instead of showing the product.
Use additional_image_link for alternate angles, the back of the product, packaging, lifestyle views, or detail shots. Keep the primary image focused on the item for sale.
Remove promotional overlays and post-production marks
Remove added calls to action, prices, shipping statements, discount text, extended-warranty claims, promotional adjectives, condition or compatibility labels, barcodes, QR codes, watermarks, and added retailer or manufacturer names and logos. These elements can trigger an image policy issue even when the underlying photograph is clear.

A logo that is physically printed or molded on the product is part of the product and is different from a logo placed over the photograph during editing. Likewise, unavoidable product markings can remain; the restriction concerns added promotional graphics or labels.

Consider automatic image improvements carefully
Merchant Center can enable automatic image improvements for some minor image-policy problems, including certain promotional overlays. If you enable the setting, inspect the resulting image and verify that Google’s modification still represents the product accurately. Automatic processing is not a substitute for fixing a wrong variant, inaccessible URL, unsupported format, or low-resolution source.
Resolve “Image too small” and “Low image quality”
Understand the size rules and their dates
Google’s current troubleshooting guidance states a minimum of 100 × 100 pixels for non-apparel and 250 × 250 pixels for apparel. Google also announced a 500 × 500 pixel minimum for all products, with enforcement beginning January 31, 2027. Warnings for images above the current category minimums but below 500 × 500 began in July 2026.

These are different thresholds, not interchangeable rules. An image can satisfy today’s category minimum and still receive a warning because it is below 500 × 500; the announced 500 × 500 enforcement date is January 31, 2027. Plan catalog updates around that date instead of waiting for disapprovals.
Fix quality without artificial enlargement
Google identifies blur, pixelation, and low resolution as quality problems. Do not submit a thumbnail or enlarge a small file with interpolation and expect the lost detail to return. Start with the highest-quality original photograph or render, then export it at an appropriate size.
Frame the product so it occupies roughly 75–90% of the image area without clipping important parts. Excessive empty space can make a technically large file appear low quality, while a tight crop that cuts off the product can make it irrelevant. Check every variant separately; a high-resolution image for one color or size does not repair a lower-resolution image assigned to another.

- Open Products → Needs attention and filter for Image.
- Select the affected product and read the complete issue description.
- Replace the image URL, image asset, or related product data according to that diagnosis.
- Save the product.
- Open the published image URL in a private browser session and verify that it now returns the intended file.
- Record the time of the change so you can distinguish processing delay from a failed correction.
If the item is controlled by an external feed or ecommerce platform, the edit may be overwritten at the next scheduled fetch. In that case, correct the source data first and use the platform’s normal feed-update method.
Correct many products through the feed
For a catalog-wide problem, use the affected-product CSV to avoid guessing which offers are involved.
- From Products → Needs attention, filter to image issues and download the affected-product CSV.
- Match each listed product ID and variant to the data source that supplies its offer.
- Group the rows by failure type: URL access, format, relevance, overlay, size, or quality.
- Correct the source images and the
image_linkvalues. Useadditional_image_linkfor alternate views rather than replacing the primary image with a collage or detail shot. - For changed image content, use a new filename and URL where possible.
- Reupload the corrected feed through the existing data-source method.
- Check a sample of the resulting URLs publicly before waiting for the full catalog to process.

Wait for processing, then request a review if eligible
After a correction, Google says updates may take 24–72 hours to appear on the Needs attention page. That interval covers processing and status refresh; it does not guarantee that an incorrect or inaccessible image will be approved.
A changed file served from the same URL is a separate timing case: Google’s broken-link guidance says recrawling the new image can take up to six weeks. A new stable filename and URL gives Google a clearer signal that the asset changed, but normal processing time still applies.
If the offer remains disapproved after you have corrected the reported cause, or you believe the issue is incorrect, use the account’s Request review option when it is offered. Review availability and limits are shown in Merchant Center and can vary by account or issue. Do not submit repeated reviews while the URL still returns the old, blocked, or noncompliant image; fix the underlying asset first.

Troubleshoot by symptom
The image opens for me but remains disapproved
Open the URL without signing in, without cookies, and from a network outside your store. Check that it returns the image itself, not a redirect to a product page, a consent screen, or an error document. Review robots.txt, CDN rules, hotlink protection, and user-agent restrictions for Googlebot and Googlebot-image. Then confirm that the URL in the feed is exactly the URL you tested.
The URL is valid, but Merchant Center says the format is invalid
Inspect the actual encoded file and the HTTP response. A filename ending in .jpg does not make a PNG or HTML response a JPEG. Re-export the image in JPEG, WebP, PNG, GIF, BMP, or TIFF, give it a matching extension, publish it at a direct URL, and update the feed.
The image meets the old minimum but shows a size warning
Check the date context. Warnings for images below 500 × 500 began in July 2026, while enforcement of the announced 500 × 500 minimum for all products starts January 31, 2027. Replace borderline assets with a quality original, preferably around 1500 × 1500 pixels or above when practical, while staying under the 64-megapixel and 16 MB limits.

The issue returns after a feed refresh
Compare the corrected item with the next feed output. If the source still contains the old URL, a scheduled import will restore the disapproved value. Correct the originating catalog, mapping rule, or ecommerce-platform media field, then reupload or wait for the next scheduled fetch and verify the resulting image_link.
Only one variant is disapproved
Inspect the variant-level image assignment rather than changing the parent product’s image globally. Confirm color, size, pack count, and model details, and ensure that the URL for that specific variant serves the matching product. Keep shared images only when they genuinely represent every assigned variant.
Prevent future image disapprovals
- Keep a stable, public image URL for every offer and monitor it for non-success responses.
- Allow Googlebot and Googlebot-image in
robots.txtand at the CDN or firewall layer. - Validate that the extension, encoded format, content type, dimensions, and file size agree before publishing.
- Use a high-resolution original; avoid thumbnails, artificial enlargement, blur, and pixelation.
- Keep the product at roughly 75–90% of the frame and remove unnecessary empty space.
- Reserve the primary image for the product itself; move alternate angles and lifestyle views to
additional_image_link. - Scan for prices, calls to action, discount badges, shipping text, QR codes, watermarks, and added logos before export.
- When replacing image content, change the filename and URL instead of silently overwriting the old file.
- Plan catalog remediation ahead of January 31, 2027, when Google has announced 500 × 500 enforcement for all product images.
The fastest reliable path is label first, URL second, asset third: diagnose the issue in Needs attention, prove that the public URL serves the intended image, correct the file and policy problem, then allow the appropriate processing window before requesting a review.
