Most WordPress theme-installation errors have one of four causes: the wrong ZIP file, a theme folder with the wrong structure, server limits or permissions, or compatibility problems with your WordPress or PHP version. Start by confirming that you have the installable theme ZIP, then install it through Appearance > Themes > Add New. If the dashboard cannot upload or write the files, install the same theme with FTP or your hosting control panel. If activation produces a fatal error, use WordPress Recovery Mode to pause the theme and regain access.
Use the correct theme package first
Commercial and free theme downloads often arrive as a larger package rather than the ZIP that WordPress can install directly. The download may contain documentation, a license, demo content, bundled plugins and one or more ZIP files. Only one of those files is normally the installable theme package.
What to inspect before uploading
- Make a copy of the downloaded package on your computer.
- If it is a ZIP containing documentation and several folders, extract it locally.
- Look for a second ZIP whose name identifies the theme itself. That is usually the file to upload from the Themes screen.
- Do not upload a plugin ZIP through Appearance > Themes. A plugin is installed from Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin.
- Open the theme ZIP and inspect its top level. For a classic theme, the theme folder must contain
style.cssdirectly, not inside another nested theme folder.
Uploading a full vendor download, a plugin package or a ZIP that is one directory too deep commonly produces the message that the package is missing style.css. The problem is usually the package structure, not a missing file on the server.
Why WordPress says the theme is missing style.css
style.css is the main stylesheet file required by a classic WordPress theme. It must sit in the theme’s root directory and contain the theme header that WordPress reads when it scans available themes. The required-files guidance also lists index.php for a classic theme.

Recognize a correctly structured ZIP
After opening the ZIP, you should see a single theme directory. Inside that directory should be files such as style.css and index.php, plus the rest of the theme files. WordPress must not have to open another copy of the theme directory before it finds the stylesheet.
A problematic structure looks like this:

└── index.phpThe extra directory level can prevent WordPress from recognizing the package. Recreate the ZIP so that the installable theme folder is at the expected level, or locate the vendor’s separate installable ZIP and upload that instead.

Check the stylesheet header
Open style.css in a text editor and confirm that it begins with a WordPress theme header. The file is not merely a place for visual CSS; WordPress uses the header to identify the theme and read its requirements. If the file is absent, renamed, empty or belongs to a different package, the Themes installer cannot treat the ZIP as a valid classic theme.
Install through the WordPress dashboard
The dashboard is the simplest route because WordPress validates the package, places it in the themes directory and registers it for activation.
- Sign in to WordPress with an account that can manage themes.
- Go to Appearance > Themes > Add New.
- For a directory theme, search the WordPress Theme Directory and select Install.
- For a ZIP you already downloaded, select Upload Theme.
- Choose the installable theme ZIP, then click Install Now.
- When installation finishes, use the available preview option when possible before selecting Activate.
If the upload completes but the theme does not appear, return to Appearance > Themes and check whether WordPress reports an incomplete or incompatible installation. Do not repeatedly upload the same bad package; identify whether the ZIP, requirements or server settings are responsible.

Fix common installation messages
“The package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet.”
Use the package checks above. You probably selected a plugin ZIP, a complete vendor download, or a nested folder rather than the installable theme ZIP. Extract a copy, find the directory containing style.css at its root, and upload the correct ZIP. A plugin cannot be made into a theme simply by renaming its file.

This indicates that the package does not contain the expected classic-theme files or that the folder structure is wrong. Recheck the top level of the ZIP and obtain the complete theme package from its author. Do not remove the error-causing file requirement by editing WordPress core.
“The link you followed has expired” or a request timeout
These messages often indicate that the server stopped processing the upload before it finished. The cause may be a low upload limit, a low POST limit, PHP resource settings or a slow connection between your browser and the server. Check the site’s reported limits before trying a different browser or repeatedly retrying.
“The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive”
The PHP upload limit is smaller than the ZIP. A smaller ZIP created by removing documentation is not always safe, because deleting files from the actual theme can break it. Instead, install the unchanged theme with FTP or a hosting control panel, or ask the host to raise the server-side limit.
“Could not create directory” or “Unable to write files”
WordPress may not have write access to its themes directory. The issue can affect new uploads, updates and extraction even when the ZIP itself is valid. Use Tools > Site Health > Info to inspect directory-write information, then ask the hosting provider to correct ownership or permissions if you do not control the server.

Check WordPress and PHP requirements
A theme can be structurally valid and still be refused because the site does not meet its minimum versions. WordPress reads the theme’s style.css header, including Requires at least and Requires PHP, and compares those values with the installed WordPress and PHP versions. The validate_theme_requirements() function returns a specific incompatibility error when the requirements are not met.
Compare the values
- Open the theme’s
style.cssand note the values in Requires at least and Requires PHP. - In WordPress, open Tools > Site Health > Info and review the WordPress and PHP versions reported for the site.
- Confirm that the installed versions meet or exceed both minimums.
- If they do not, update WordPress or change the PHP version through the host’s supported controls before attempting installation again.
Do not assume that a theme advertised as “modern” supports every hosting environment. The requirement in the theme header is the value WordPress can evaluate during installation.
Use Site Health to diagnose server limits
Tools > Site Health > Info is the most useful built-in location for the environment details behind upload and write failures. Review the sections that report the maximum upload size, POST limits, PHP variables and filesystem information.
- Maximum upload size: compare it with the size of the theme ZIP.
- POST limits and PHP variables: low values can stop a large upload or a long extraction request.
- PHP and server details: use these values when checking the theme’s requirements or contacting support.
- Filesystem and directory write access: confirm whether WordPress can write to the themes directory.
If a value is controlled by the server, changing WordPress settings alone will not fix it. Send the host the exact error, the ZIP size and the relevant Site Health values, and ask whether the upload, POST, execution-time or filesystem setting can be changed. A host may need to make the change at the server level.
Install the theme with FTP when dashboard upload fails
FTP bypasses the dashboard’s browser upload path. It is useful when the ZIP is too large, the request times out, or the dashboard cannot write the themes directory.

- Extract the installable theme ZIP on your computer.
- Connect to the site with an FTP client using the credentials supplied by the host.
- Open the WordPress directory, then navigate to
/wp-content/themes/. - Upload the complete theme folder into that directory.
- Preserve the folder structure so
style.cssand the other theme files are directly inside the uploaded theme folder. - Return to Appearance > Themes in WordPress, locate the uploaded theme and preview or activate it.
FTP does not repair an invalid package. If the extracted folder lacks style.css, has an extra nested directory or contains a plugin instead of a theme, WordPress will still reject or fail to display it after the upload.
Install through a hosting control panel such as cPanel
A hosting control panel is another documented fallback. It can upload a large archive directly to the server and extract it there, avoiding the browser’s upload limit.
- Open the host’s file manager and navigate to
/wp-content/themes/. - Upload the installable theme ZIP, not the full vendor download.
- Use the file manager’s extract function in the themes directory.
- Check that extraction created one theme folder with
style.cssdirectly inside it. - Delete the archive only after confirming that all files were extracted successfully.
- In WordPress, open Appearance > Themes and preview or activate the theme.
Some hosts restrict file-manager extraction or apply different ownership to extracted files. If WordPress cannot write, update or remove the theme afterward, ask the host to correct the directory ownership and permissions rather than repeatedly extracting new copies.

The dashboard is the least complicated option. FTP and a control panel are practical alternatives when the package is valid but the server cannot accept it through Upload Theme. Neither fallback should be used to bypass a theme’s version requirements.

A theme can install successfully and still cause a fatal PHP error when activated. WordPress Recovery Mode was introduced in version 5.2 to help in this situation. When WordPress detects a fatal error during a normal page load, it can email the administrator a Recovery Mode link.

Use the Recovery Mode email
- Open the Recovery Mode link sent to the site’s administrator email address.
- Sign in through the protected Recovery Mode session.
- WordPress pauses the component associated with the fatal error for your administrator session and identifies it on screen.
- Deactivate the faulty theme, switch to a known-working theme or repair the reported compatibility problem.
- Exit Recovery Mode and test the public site in a separate browser window.
Recovery Mode protects the public site from the paused component while you work. It does not automatically fix the theme. Keep the fatal-error message and the paused-theme name; they are the most useful details for the theme author or host.
If no Recovery Mode email arrives
Check the administrator mailbox and spam folder. If you can still reach the dashboard, switch themes from Appearance > Themes. If both the front end and dashboard are inaccessible, use the host’s supported filesystem tools to move the offending theme folder out of /wp-content/themes/, then contact the host or theme author with the exact error. Do not delete the only working theme while troubleshooting.
Check the theme after installation
- Open Appearance > Themes and verify that the theme appears with its expected name and screenshot.
- Use preview when available and look for PHP errors, missing assets or an unusable layout before activation.
- After activation, load the home page, a post, a page and the dashboard.
- Confirm that the site’s menus, widgets or block areas still contain the expected content.
- Test on a logged-out browser session so you see what visitors see.
If the theme requires bundled plugins or demo content, follow the author’s installation instructions after the theme itself is active. A successful theme upload does not guarantee that optional plugins, imported content or custom settings have been configured.
What to send the theme author or host
When the documented installation paths fail, a precise report gets a faster answer than “the theme will not install.” Include:
- The exact error text, copied from WordPress.
- The theme name and the file name of the ZIP you uploaded.
- Whether you used dashboard upload, FTP or the hosting file manager.
- The WordPress version and PHP version shown in Site Health.
- The theme’s Requires at least and Requires PHP values.
- The ZIP size and the maximum upload size reported by Site Health.
- Whether the theme folder contains
style.cssat its top level. - Any fatal-error text shown in Recovery Mode after activation.
Read the theme author’s installation instructions before changing files or server settings. If the problem remains, send the author this environment information and the exact error rather than a screenshot with the important text cut off.
