Most Pokémon transfer failures have a specific cause: the wrong migration route, an incompatible destination, mismatched Nintendo accounts, missing save data on the console running Pokémon HOME, or a move that is not reversible. Identify the exact source and destination first, then use the route for that platform. Nintendo 3DS games go through Pokémon Bank, while supported Nintendo Switch games connect directly to Pokémon HOME. Check the Pokémon’s destination list before moving anything, because a gray game icon means that Pokémon cannot be used there.
Map the transfer before changing anything
Write down four details before opening HOME: the exact old game, the exact destination game, every device involved, and the complete error message. “Older game” can mean a Nintendo 3DS title, a supported Switch title, or another service, and those paths are not interchangeable. The route determines whether Premium is required, which account must be linked, whether you can select individual boxes, and whether the move can ever be undone.
| Source | Bridge and app | Premium requirement | What you select | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 3DS Pokémon title | Pokémon Bank to Pokémon HOME | Pokémon HOME Premium is required for a Bank-to-HOME move. | With a 3DS, you can select Bank boxes. Without a 3DS, the Bank route moves all Pokémon in that Bank account together. | A Pokémon moved from Bank to HOME cannot return to Bank. |
| Supported Nintendo Switch game | Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon HOME | Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required for HOME functions. Premium is a separate requirement for the Bank route. | Select the connected game, the user save data, and eligible Pokémon or boxes. | Compatibility is Pokémon-specific, and some moves between HOME and Let’s Go have return restrictions. |
The official overview of supported connections is maintained in Pokémon Support’s guide to connecting Pokémon HOME to different games. Use it to confirm that the source title is supported instead of assuming that two games can exchange Pokémon directly.

Check whether the destination accepts that Pokémon
Do this check before reinstalling an app, changing accounts, or repeating a failed move. Compatibility is attached to the individual Pokémon, not merely to the source game. One Pokémon transferring successfully does not prove that another species, form, or individual can enter the same destination.

- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
On the Pokémon HOME mobile app
- Open the Pokémon’s details.
- Find Games it can travel to.
- Look for the exact destination game in that list.
The mobile list is the controlling check for that Pokémon. If the destination is absent, HOME is not offering a supported path for that Pokémon, so changing cables, consoles, or subscriptions will not make the move available.
On the Nintendo Switch version of HOME
- Select the Pokémon in a HOME box or connected game.
- Open its summary.
- Press + and choose Connected Games.
Pokémon Support states, “If a game image is grayed out, that Pokémon cannot be used in that game.” The same explanation and screenshots appear in the official compatibility instructions. Treat the current in-app result as more reliable than an old static compatibility chart.
Moving a Nintendo 3DS Pokémon through Pokémon Bank
Nintendo 3DS titles do not connect to HOME in the same way as Switch games. The supported bridge is Pokémon Bank, and the Bank-to-HOME operation requires an active Pokémon HOME Premium Plan. Decide whether you need to preserve any Pokémon in Bank before confirming: the move into HOME is permanent with respect to Bank.
When the 3DS is available: use a Moving Key
This method lets you choose which Bank boxes to send. Keep the 3DS, the system running the Switch version of HOME, and both accounts available while you work.
- Open the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon HOME and choose the option to move Pokémon from Pokémon Bank.
- HOME displays a Moving Key.
- On the 3DS, open Pokémon Bank and choose its option to move Pokémon to Pokémon HOME.
- Enter the Moving Key shown by HOME into Bank.
- Complete the box selection and confirm only after checking that the destination and account are correct.
The key expires after three minutes, so enter it promptly. The official instructions also note that Moving Keys never contain the letters O, I, or Z; a character that appears to be one of those letters is likely being misread. If the timer expires, start the process again to obtain a new key rather than trying to reuse the old one.

When the 3DS is not available: link the accounts first
Pokémon Support provides a separate route for a Bank account when you no longer have the 3DS. The Nintendo Network ID used with Pokémon Bank must be linked to the Nintendo Account used with Pokémon HOME. After confirming that identity match, start the Bank transfer from HOME.
This no-3DS path moves all Pokémon in the Bank account at once; it is not a box-by-box selection tool. Verify the Bank contents and the linked IDs before starting. The procedure and its irreversible consequence are documented in Pokémon Support’s Bank-to-HOME instructions.

What cannot be repaired after a Bank move
Pokémon Support’s FAQ is explicit: “However, once a Pokémon from Pokémon Bank is moved into Pokémon HOME, it cannot be moved back to Pokémon Bank afterward.” This is a rule of the migration path, not a temporary error. If your plan depends on continuing to use the Pokémon in a 3DS game, do not confirm the Bank transfer yet.
Moving Pokémon between HOME and supported Switch games
For a supported Switch title, use the Nintendo Switch version of HOME and the save data on the console where HOME is running. Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required for HOME’s transfer functions, so subscribing to that service will not resolve a species restriction or an account mismatch.
- Launch Pokémon HOME on the Switch.
- Choose the connected game you want to access.
- Select the Nintendo Switch user whose save data contains the game.
- Open the game boxes and HOME boxes shown on screen.
- Move only Pokémon that the interface marks as eligible.
- Review the resulting box arrangement and confirm the operation.
Pokémon that cannot be moved are identified in the interface. Stop when a Pokémon is marked ineligible and use the Connected Games check rather than repeatedly attempting the same move. A successful transfer for a different Pokémon does not override this individual compatibility decision.

Fix HOME when a Switch 2 game is missing
On Nintendo Switch 2, the game’s save data must be present on the same console where you launch Pokémon HOME. This matters after a console replacement, system transfer, or a setup in which the game is installed on one console but its save data remains on another.
Check the console that currently runs HOME, then verify that the relevant game save data and the intended Nintendo Account are present there. Pokémon Support recommends transferring the system data, including save data, with the same Nintendo Account when moving to the new console. Once the save data is in the correct place, reopen HOME and select the game and user again. The requirement is described in the Pokémon HOME on Nintendo Switch 2 FAQ.
“To link Pokémon HOME with games like Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, the game’s save data must be present on the same console where you launch Pokémon HOME.”
Resolve the “already been linked” account error
The exact message This account has already been linked to a different Pokémon HOME has a specific official remedy. Do not apply it automatically to unrelated errors.
- Delete the Pokémon HOME mobile app.
- Reinstall the mobile app from your device’s app store.
- Run the first-time setup again.
- Link the same Nintendo Account that is used by the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon HOME.
Deleting and reinstalling can affect locally saved data and history, so identify the correct Nintendo Account before you begin. If Premium has been purchased and/or the mobile and Switch versions have already synchronized, Pokémon Support says the Nintendo Account linked to that HOME account cannot be changed. Creating a different account therefore means creating a new HOME account on a new device, rather than swapping the identity inside the existing account.

- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld

Follow the complete sequence in the official steps for the already-linked error. For any other message, record its exact wording and use the instructions attached to that message; an account reinstall is not a universal fix.
Understand the moves that are one-way or conditionally reversible
Bank to HOME is one-way
Once the Bank transfer completes, the Pokémon is in HOME and cannot be returned to Bank. Plan the destination before moving a collection, especially if you still use a 3DS title or want to keep a backup arrangement in Bank.
HOME and Let’s Go have a return condition
Pokémon can return from HOME to Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Pokémon Let’s Go, Eevee only if they have not been moved from HOME into Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield. Moving one of those Pokémon into Sword or Shield changes its eligibility to return to Let’s Go. The restriction is explained in Pokémon Support’s Let’s Go and HOME return FAQ.
Before confirming a move, ask whether the Pokémon may need to go back to its original game or through an intermediate game. HOME is not a universally reversible shuttle.

The destination game is gray or missing
- Open the Pokémon’s detail view and check Games it can travel to on mobile, or Connected Games on Switch.
- If the destination image is gray, treat the Pokémon as incompatible with that game.
- Check each Pokémon individually; another Pokémon’s successful move is not evidence that this one qualifies.
This symptom is a compatibility result, not an account or network fault. The available destination list can differ between Pokémon even when they came from the same source title.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
HOME does not show the game or the correct boxes
- Confirm that you launched the Nintendo Switch version of HOME.
- Select the correct connected game and the correct Switch user.
- On Switch 2, confirm that the game’s save data is on the same console as HOME.
- If the console was replaced, transfer system and save data with the same Nintendo Account before trying again.
Installing a game without its save data on the HOME console does not satisfy the Switch 2 linking requirement.
The Bank move asks for a key that no longer works
- Return to HOME and generate a new Moving Key.
- Enter it in Pokémon Bank within three minutes.
- Check confusing characters; official keys do not use O, I, or Z.
Do not keep entering an expired key. Restarting the key process is the intended recovery.
The no-3DS transfer would move too much
Without a 3DS, the Bank route moves every Pokémon in that Bank account at once. If you need to leave some Pokémon behind, do not start that path; obtain access to the 3DS method so boxes can be selected, or postpone the migration.
A Pokémon moved successfully but will not return
Check which route it took. Bank-to-HOME cannot be reversed, and a Pokémon moved from HOME into Sword or Shield may no longer return to Let’s Go. These are documented eligibility rules, not signs that the transfer failed.
The mobile app reports an account-link problem
Use the reinstall-and-relink procedure only when the message is the exact already-linked error. Before deleting the app, make sure you know the Nintendo Account used by the Switch version and understand that local mobile data and history may be affected.
A safe pre-transfer checklist
- Record the source game, destination game, console or consoles, user profile, and full error text.
- Classify the source as a Nintendo 3DS title using Bank or a supported Switch title using HOME.
- Open the individual Pokémon’s destination list and verify that the target is not gray.
- Confirm the required plan: Premium for Bank-to-HOME; Nintendo Switch Online is not required for HOME functions.
- Verify the Nintendo Network ID and Nintendo Account relationship for a no-3DS Bank transfer.
- On Switch 2, verify that the game save data is on the console running HOME.
- Check whether the move is one-way or conditionally reversible.
- Only then generate a Moving Key, select boxes, or confirm the HOME move.
When hardware is—and is not—the answer
You need compatible Nintendo hardware to use the Switch version of HOME and supported Switch games. If you no longer have a 3DS, the official no-3DS Bank path may avoid needing that handheld, but it moves the entire Bank collection and still requires the correct linked identities and HOME Premium.
A new console cannot make an incompatible Pokémon eligible, repair a mismatched account, or reverse a completed Bank migration. Likewise, buying a game cartridge is not a universal solution: the destination must be a supported game, its save data must be available to HOME, and the individual Pokémon must pass the destination check. Solve the route, compatibility, account, and save-data issue first; consider hardware only when one of those requirements is genuinely missing.
When to stop retrying and use official support
If the destination is eligible, the accounts and save data are correctly matched, the Moving Key is current, and the documented steps still fail, preserve the exact error wording and the point at which the process stops. Use the Pokémon Support article for that specific message rather than applying a workaround from a different error category. The support pages linked above cover connection routes, compatibility, Bank transfers, Let’s Go return rules, Switch 2 save-data placement, and the already-linked account error.
