Start by confirming you are using the PlayStation Plus PC app, not PS Remote Play. They stream different things: the Plus app streams eligible subscription-catalog games, while Remote Play streams from your own console. Then match the check to the symptom. For lag, check connection stability and speed; for controller trouble, verify the controller and its connection; for a black screen, use general PC checks but do not assume Remote Play instructions apply.
First, identify the service and the exact problem
PlayStation Plus cloud streaming on PC and PS Remote Play are separate services. Sony’s US page, How to access PlayStation Plus on PC, describes the Plus PC app and its catalog streaming. Sony’s separate How to troubleshoot Remote Play connection issues page concerns Remote Play. A blank-screen result on the Remote Play page is not a verified fix for a black screen in the Plus app.
Before changing settings, note what “lag” means in your case. Delayed response to a button press, jerky motion, a soft or reduced-resolution picture, and a frozen image are different symptoms. A connection can meet a speed minimum and still be unstable or have enough delay to affect play. Sony’s published speed figures do not diagnose the cause of an individual problem.

Write down when the problem starts and what it looks like before you troubleshoot. Does it happen as soon as the app opens, only after you launch a game, or during play? Is the image black, frozen, or merely less sharp? Does the controller fail to connect, or does it connect but not respond as expected? These distinctions help you avoid treating a picture-quality change as a controller fault or assuming every freeze is a network problem.
#1 Best Overall
- Precision Control: The feel, shape, and sensitivity of the DualShock 4’s analog sticks and trigger buttons have been enhanced to offer players absolute control for all games on PlayStation 4.
- Sharing at your Fingertips: The addition of the Share button makes sharing your greatest gaming moments as easy as a push of a button. Upload gameplay videos and screenshots directly from your system or live-stream your gameplay, all without disturbing the game in progress.
- New ways to Play: Revolutionary features like the touch pad, integrated light bar, and built-in speaker offer exciting new ways to experience and interact with your games and its 3.5mm audio jack offers a practical personal audio solution for gamers who want to listen to their games in private.
- Charge Efficiently: The DualShock 4 Wireless Controller can easily be recharged by plugging it into your PlayStation 4 system, even when on standby, or with any standard charger with a micro-USB port.
When comparing connections or controller methods, keep the game and other conditions as similar as possible. Change one factor, try again, and record whether the symptom changes. This is a way to narrow down what to report; it does not guarantee that a particular setting will fix the app.
Check the Plus PC app requirements
Sony’s US Plus PC access page lists these minimums. These are published requirements, not a promise that every supported PC or connection will stream smoothly.
| Requirement | Sony’s listed information | What it means for troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| Broadband speed | 5 Mbps minimum, according to Sony’s US PC access page | Below this minimum, the connection does not meet the stated requirement. Meeting it does not guarantee smooth play. |
| Connection type | Sony recommends a wired broadband connection | If you are using Wi-Fi and can connect the PC to the router by Ethernet, use a wired connection as a comparison test. |
| Operating system | The US PC access page lists Windows 8.1 or 10; Sony’s separate getting-started page lists Windows 10 as its minimum | Sony’s pages differ. Check the current requirements shown on the official app download page for your PC rather than assuming the older listing applies. |
| Processor | Core i3 at 2.0 GHz, listed on the US PC access page | Compare your PC with Sony’s stated minimum if the app will not run. |
| Memory and storage | 2 GB RAM and 300 MB storage, listed on the US PC access page | These are listed app requirements; they do not establish a diagnosis for a particular freeze or black screen. |
The figures and page differences above reflect Sony support information accessed October 9, 2026. Requirements can change, so the current download page is the practical reference when installing or checking an operating-system mismatch.
Use the requirements as checks, not diagnoses
The PC figures are minimum app requirements. They are useful when the app will not install or run, but they do not show that a computer meeting them will necessarily stream without interruption. Similarly, the 5 Mbps figure is Sony’s stated broadband minimum, not a measure of the delay between a button press and the response on screen. Keep these categories separate: check PC requirements for installation or startup concerns, and check the connection separately for streaming symptoms.
Sony’s pages are not identical on Windows support: the US PC access page lists Windows 8.1 or 10, while Getting started with PS Plus lists Windows 10 as its minimum. Rather than choosing one listing as definitive, use the current requirements on Sony’s app download page when deciding whether to install or continue troubleshooting on a particular Windows version.
Fix lag, stuttering, or reduced image quality
1. Compare the connection with Sony’s published thresholds
Sony’s US PC access page states a 5 Mbps minimum broadband speed. Separately, Sony’s PlayStation Plus catalog guidance says 1080p streaming requires at least 15 Mbps and that resolution may be reduced when speed falls below that figure. The 15 Mbps note concerns resolution; it is not a latency target and does not guarantee responsive controls.
If the picture has become less sharp but the game still responds, reduced resolution may be consistent with the catalog guidance. If button response is delayed or the picture repeatedly stutters, speed alone may not explain it. Observe whether the problem is continuous or comes and goes, and whether it changes when you test a wired connection.

- The Dualshock 4 wireless controller can be easily recharged by plugging it into your PlayStation 4 system, even when in rest mode, or with any standard charger using a USB cable (type A to micro B sold separately)
2. Test wired Ethernet if you currently use Wi-Fi
Sony recommends a wired broadband connection for the PC app. If your PC and router can be connected, try Ethernet for a session and compare responsiveness and stability with Wi-Fi. Treat this as a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix: it can show whether Wi-Fi is contributing, but it cannot establish every possible cause of lag.
If a wired test is not practical, record when the Wi-Fi problem occurs and whether other internet activity is also affected. Avoid concluding that a particular router, service plan, or setting is required based only on lag in one game session.
3. Check for a wider connection or service problem
Sony’s general PlayStation gaming on PC support page advises checking the internet connection or game server status. This is general PC-gaming advice, not a Plus-app-specific diagnosis. If other online services are also struggling, the issue may not be isolated to the Plus app. If other services work normally, that still does not identify the cause inside the app.
- Record whether the symptom is delayed input, stutter, reduced picture quality, or a freeze.
- Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection where possible.
- Compare observed connection speed with Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and the separate 15 Mbps 1080p guidance, keeping in mind that neither figure measures latency.
- Check general internet availability and relevant service status before changing unrelated PC or network settings.
4. Read the result without over-interpreting it
If a wired test feels more stable than Wi-Fi, that is useful evidence that the connection method may matter in your setup; it is not proof of a single underlying cause. If both tests show the same symptom, that does not prove the app is at fault either. Sony’s published thresholds help you check the stated minimum and the 1080p resolution guidance, but they do not provide a specific latency limit or a complete diagnosis for stutter, delayed input, or intermittent freezes.

Fix controller connection or recognition problems
Confirm compatibility before replacing a controller
Sony lists the DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller for PlayStation Plus on PC. Sony also says some third-party PC-compatible XInput controllers work, but full compatibility is not guaranteed. If a third-party controller is not detected or its inputs behave unexpectedly, test with a supported controller if one is available before deciding the app or PC is at fault.
Do not buy a replacement solely because the Plus app does not respond to a controller. First check whether the existing device is compatible, connected, and paired correctly. A replacement is relevant only if the current controller is faulty or unsuitable for the service.

Check the controller’s connection
Sony’s general controller instructions describe pairing a DUALSHOCK 4 with a supported device over Bluetooth and connecting it to a Windows PC with a compatible micro-USB cable or the DUALSHOCK 4 USB wireless adaptor. These are controller setup options, not a Plus-app-specific recovery sequence or a guarantee that a connection problem will be fixed.

- Confirm that the controller is one Sony lists for Plus PC streaming, or recognize that an XInput device may have incomplete compatibility.
- Check that the controller is powered and connected to the PC using its supported connection method.
- If using Bluetooth, verify that the controller is paired with the PC. If pairing remains unclear, follow Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 controller setup instructions for the supported device.
- If available, compare with a known-compatible controller or another supported connection method. This can help distinguish a connection problem from a compatibility issue.
Sony’s general PC gaming support directs people with controller issues to PlayStation Repairs. That is a support route for controller problems, rather than evidence of a Plus app setting that resolves them.
Compare certainty and connection options
The DUALSHOCK 4 is the clearer compatibility choice because Sony expressly lists it for Plus PC streaming. A third-party XInput controller may work, but Sony does not guarantee full compatibility. That difference is a reason to test an already available, Sony-listed controller if you are troubleshooting an XInput device; it is not a reason to buy another controller before checking the one you own.
For a DUALSHOCK 4, Sony’s general guidance describes Bluetooth pairing and Windows PC connections using a compatible micro-USB cable or the DUALSHOCK 4 USB wireless adaptor. These are alternative connection approaches. If a Bluetooth pairing is uncertain, trying a supported wired connection may help isolate whether the problem concerns pairing, but it should not be presented as a guaranteed Plus-app remedy.
Route audio to the PC, not the controller headset jack
For Plus PC streaming, Sony says game audio comes through the PC’s speakers or headphones. A headset plugged into the controller will not work for this service. Connect the headset to the PC or use the PC’s speakers when checking whether game audio is available. Sony also says Party Chat is not currently supported on PC.
What to do about a black screen, freeze, or startup failure
Make sure the troubleshooting steps match the app
Confirm that the black screen is in the PlayStation Plus PC app rather than PS Remote Play. Sony’s Remote Play troubleshooting page includes a blank-screen result, but its scope is Remote Play. It does not establish why the Plus PC app displays a black screen or provide a verified Plus-app recovery procedure.
Use general PC checks carefully
Sony’s PlayStation gaming on PC support page gives general checks for PC gaming problems: install Windows updates, update relevant device drivers, check the internet connection or service status, and temporarily disable SLI or extra monitors if a PC game has a problem. These are broad PC checks, not confirmed Plus app fixes. If you try one, change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it affected the symptom.
Rank #4
- The feel, shape, and sensitivity of the dual analog sticks and trigger buttons have been improved to provide a greater sense of control, no matter what you play
- Install available Windows updates and relevant device-driver updates, then see whether the startup symptom changes.
- Check the connection and service status if the app opens but cannot establish or maintain a stream.
- If the PC uses SLI or multiple monitors, temporarily disable SLI or disconnect extra monitors as a general PC-game check, then compare the result.
Sony’s Plus PC page says to download the app and install drivers as prompted. If the app is failing at installation or startup, follow the current prompts and requirements on Sony’s official Plus PC page. The available Sony guidance does not specify a Plus-app black-screen sequence, so do not treat cache deletion, registry edits, firewall changes, codec changes, or a reinstall as Sony-verified remedies.
Escalate if the Plus app still fails
If the black screen or freeze persists after the relevant general checks, contact current PlayStation Support for the Plus PC app. Describe the exact symptom, whether it occurs at startup or after a game begins, whether the display is black or frozen, and which general checks you already tried. That gives support a clearer report without implying a cause that Sony’s published Plus PC guidance does not identify.

Prepare a useful support report
When contacting PlayStation Support, state first that the issue is with the PlayStation Plus PC app, not PS Remote Play. Include the Windows version you use and, if relevant, whether it meets the current requirements on Sony’s download page; Sony’s two pages accessed October 9, 2026 listed different Windows minimums. Report whether the issue occurs before a game launches or during a stream, and distinguish a black screen from a frozen picture or reduced image quality.
For lag, say whether the main problem is delayed controls, stuttering, or image sharpness, and whether you compared Wi-Fi with a wired connection. For controller trouble, give the controller type and connection method, and note whether you checked pairing or tried another supported method. Mention any Windows or device-driver updates or display checks you already made. These details describe the troubleshooting completed; they should not be framed as proof of a cause.
Common fixes to avoid assuming
There is no Sony-verified Plus PC black-screen procedure in the official pages listed below. Avoid treating instructions written for Remote Play as if they apply to cloud streaming through the Plus app. The same caution applies to unsupported recipes involving cache deletion, registry edits, firewall changes, codec changes, or reinstalling the app: the Sony pages cited here do not establish those as fixes for this specific problem.
For lag, the official guidance supports checking the connection, comparing Wi-Fi with wired broadband where possible, and consulting general internet or service status. It does not establish that a VPN, DNS change, port forwarding, router purchase, graphics setting, or a particular internet plan will fix Plus PC streaming. For controller trouble, check compatibility and connection before buying hardware. These limits matter because an unnecessary change or purchase can add cost without addressing the symptom.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 5 Mbps enough for PlayStation Plus streaming on PC?
Sony’s US PC access page states 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed. That is a stated minimum, not a guarantee of smooth play. Sony’s separate catalog guidance says at least 15 Mbps is required for 1080p streaming and notes that resolution may be reduced below that speed; the 15 Mbps figure is not a latency guarantee.
Will using Ethernet definitely fix lag?
No. Sony recommends a wired broadband connection, so comparing Ethernet with Wi-Fi is a useful check if your setup allows it. A difference can indicate that connection method matters in your setup, but Sony’s guidance does not promise that Ethernet will fix every cause of lag.
Can I use a third-party controller with the Plus PC app?
Sony says some third-party PC-compatible XInput controllers work, but full compatibility is not guaranteed. Sony lists the DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller for Plus on PC. Check the device’s compatibility and connection before deciding that it needs replacement.
Why is there no sound in my headset connected to the controller?
Sony says Plus PC game audio comes through the PC’s speakers or headphones; a headset plugged into the controller will not work for this service. Connect the headset to the PC. Sony also says Party Chat is not currently supported on PC.
Can I use Sony’s Remote Play black-screen fix for the Plus PC app?
Do not assume so. Remote Play streams from your own console, while the Plus PC app streams eligible subscription-catalog games. Sony’s Remote Play blank-screen guidance does not establish a cause or verified fix for a black screen in the Plus PC app. Use general PC checks cautiously and contact current PlayStation Support if the issue persists.
Which Windows versions does the Plus PC app support?
Sony’s US PC access page lists Windows 8.1 or 10, while its separate Getting started with PS Plus page lists Windows 10 as its minimum. Because the official pages differ, check the current requirements shown on Sony’s app download page rather than relying on an older listing.
Should I buy a new router or controller to fix streaming problems?
The guidance cited here does not establish that a router purchase fixes lag. Sony recommends trying a wired connection when practical. For controller trouble, first check compatibility, pairing, and connection; a replacement is relevant if the current controller is faulty or unsuitable, not simply because the app did not respond.
