On a Pixel 9, open Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver, turn on Use screen saver, choose what to display, and set When to show to While charging or While upright and charging. To test the setup, tap Use screen saver. For automatic startup, let the screen time out while the phone meets the selected charging condition; pressing the power button to turn off the display prevents the screen saver from starting.
If it starts but shows the wrong or incomplete content, check which screen saver is selected, review its source settings, and confirm the required photo or location permissions. Dim surroundings can also change the display to a low-light clock or turn it off.
Fix the most common startup problem first
A Pixel 9 screen saver is tied to a charging condition and the screen timing out. It is not simply an alternative lock screen or a display mode that starts whenever the phone is idle. Check the settings in this order so you can tell whether the problem is the trigger, the selected content, or low-light behavior.

- Open the screen-saver settings. Go to Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver.
- Enable the feature. Turn on Use screen saver.
- Choose the trigger. Under When to show, select While charging or While upright and charging, depending on whether the phone needs to be upright.
- Check the wireless-only restriction. If Restrict to wireless charging is enabled, the screen saver is limited to wireless charging. Test it while wirelessly charging, or turn off that restriction if you want it to work with other charging.
- Let the screen time out. Keep the phone connected to the required type of charger and wait for the screen to time out. Do not press the power button to turn off the display: Google warns that doing so prevents the screen saver from starting.
- Use the preview to check the selection. In the screen-saver settings, tap Use screen saver. This lets you test what is selected without waiting for the normal timeout.
The preview is useful for checking the chosen appearance, but automatic startup still depends on the charging condition and allowing the display to time out. If the preview works but the screen saver does not appear during ordinary charging, return to When to show and the wireless-only setting, then repeat the timeout test without using the power button.

Read the result of each test
Use the preview and the automatic timeout test for different purposes. If Use screen saver shows the content you expect, that confirms the selected screen saver can be previewed; it does not show that your charging trigger is configured for the situation you are testing. Check the condition under When to show, confirm any wireless-only restriction, and then let the display time out while that condition is met.
If the preview itself shows unexpected content, concentrate first on Choose a screen saver, the source or settings for that content, and whether another active screen saver is selected. If the preview looks right but the automatic test fails, concentrate on charging, upright positioning if required, and timeout behavior. This separation helps avoid changing photo or location permissions when the actual issue is that the phone is not meeting the chosen start condition.
Google’s Pixel Phone Help documentation specifically cautions that turning off the phone’s display with the Power button prevents the screen saver from starting. So, for a valid automatic test, leave the phone connected to its charger and let the screen time out rather than manually pressing the button. A manually turned-off display and a display that times out are not equivalent tests for this feature.

The documented choices are While charging and While upright and charging. Choose based on how you use the phone while it is connected to power. The upright option adds a positioning condition; it is not a general setting for starting the screen saver when the phone is unplugged.
| Setting | What to check | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| While charging | The phone must be charging and the screen must time out. | Use this if the phone may lie flat or rest in different positions while charging. |
| While upright and charging | The phone must be charging, upright, and allowed to time out. | Use this if you want the charging display when the phone is positioned upright. |
| Restrict to wireless charging | If enabled, test while wirelessly charging; otherwise disable the restriction to allow other charging situations. | Use it only if you specifically want the screen saver limited to wireless charging. |
These settings control when the screen saver can appear; they do not promise that every content type will be available or look the same on every software version. Google identifies some of its newer screen-saver instructions as applying to Android 14 and later, so menu wording and choices can vary with the software version.
Decide whether wireless charging is actually required
Wireless charging is not a general prerequisite for a Pixel 9 screen saver. The specific setting Restrict to wireless charging is what makes wireless charging a requirement. If the phone is connected to another type of charger and the screen saver does not appear, check that switch before concluding that the feature only works wirelessly. If you choose to keep the restriction on, test with a wireless charger and make sure the phone is charging under the selected start condition.

Pixel 9 supports Qi-certified fast wireless charging, but that hardware capability is separate from the screen-saver fix. You do not need to buy an accessory to correct an ordinary setup problem, and no particular charger is required by the instructions unless you deliberately limit the feature to wireless charging. If buying a charger for that preference, verify compatibility with Pixel 9 rather than assuming that every wireless charger behaves identically.

Fix a screen saver that shows the wrong content
Check which screen saver is selected
Return to Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver and review the choice under Choose a screen saver. Select the intended option, then use Use screen saver to preview it. A different selection, or a source configured differently than expected, can make the display appear wrong even when the screen saver starts normally.
You may have more than one screen saver active. If the displayed item is not the one you expected, swipe left or right from the screen edge to switch between active screen savers. Review the screen-saver setup screen to see the available choices and reorder them if needed.
This matters when the phone seems to alternate between types of content. Seeing a clock once and a photo or another view later does not necessarily mean the source is corrupted: multiple active screen savers may be available to switch between. Use the edge swipe to inspect the active options, then return to setup if you want to review or reorder them. Preview the intended selection after making a change so you can distinguish a selection issue from a startup issue.
Review photo and weather access
Some content depends on permissions as well as the selected screen saver. For a personal photo frame, check that the feature has access to photos and media and review its Photos source or settings. If the frame is blank or shows an unexpected set of pictures, verify the configured source rather than assuming the charging trigger is at fault.
Real-time weather requires location permission set to Always allow, according to Google’s instructions. If weather is missing or not updating as expected, check that permission and confirm that the weather screen saver is the selected content. The documented permission requirement is specific to real-time weather; it does not establish that other screen-saver choices need location access.

When troubleshooting photos, focus on two separate questions: does the screen saver have access to photos and media, and is the expected source selected in its Photos settings? Permission alone does not confirm that the intended source has been chosen. For weather, confirm both that weather is the selected screen saver and that location access is set to Always allow for real-time updates. These checks target the content path; they do not change the charging and timeout requirements for starting the screen saver.
Know what content may be available
Google describes screen-saver options that can include clocks, weather updates, a personal photo frame, charging status, and home controls for custom charging screen savers. Availability depends on the screen-saver type and permissions, and the exact options may differ by software version. If an option is absent, the documentation does not establish that every Pixel 9 build or configuration should show it.
| Content type | Useful check |
|---|---|
| Clock | Confirm the intended screen saver is selected; also inspect low-light behavior if the appearance changes in a dim room. |
| Weather | Confirm the weather option is selected and location permission is set to Always allow for real-time weather. |
| Personal photo frame | Review its Photos source or settings and confirm access to photos and media. |
| Charging status or home controls | Check whether the relevant option is available for the selected screen-saver type and software version. |
The available content is a choice of use, not a published ranking of which option is most reliable or best for battery life. Google’s instructions identify the options and their relevant settings but do not compare their performance. Choose the display that suits the charging setup, then troubleshoot missing content by checking the matching source or permission rather than relying on an unsupported performance assumption.
Check low-light behavior when the display changes or goes dark
A screen saver that changes in a dim room may be responding to its low-light setting rather than failing. Open Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver > Low light mode and review whether the phone should switch to a low-light clock or turn the screen off. Google says the default in dim surroundings is the low-light clock.
If the screen saver appears in a bright room but becomes a clock or goes dark when the room is dim, adjust Low light mode to the behavior you want. This setting concerns what happens in low light; it does not replace the charging trigger or the need to let the screen time out.
Use this setting when the symptom is specifically a change in dim surroundings. If the screen saver never appears in the first place, first check that it is enabled, that the chosen charging condition is met, and that the display timed out normally. If it appears but its look changes in a darker environment, inspect Low light mode instead of treating every clock or dark-screen change as a failed start.

What to do if the checks do not solve it
If the preview, trigger, selected content, permissions, and low-light setting all look right but a particular photo or weather source still does not appear, Google’s published instructions do not provide a deeper Pixel 9-specific recovery procedure for that case. Avoid treating a particular reset or repair as a guaranteed fix when it is not established by those instructions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Reopen the screen-saver settings and verify the selected option and its source configuration.
- Repeat the preview, then test automatic startup with the phone connected to the required charger and the screen allowed to time out.
- If a content source remains unavailable after its permissions and settings are checked, use Google’s support options for further device-specific help.
When contacting support, describe which part of the test fails: whether Use screen saver previews the expected content, whether the phone is meeting the selected charging condition, whether the screen was allowed to time out, and whether the problem affects a particular source such as photos or weather. Include the relevant permission and low-light checks. This gives a clearer account than saying only that the screen saver is broken, without assuming a cause that the available settings do not establish.
Screen-saver configuration is separate from other display faults. Flickering, lines, a display that will not turn on, or visible physical damage are not ordinary screen-saver symptoms; Google provides separate guidance for screen-appearance problems.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Distinguish the screen saver from other display behavior
A screen saver is a charging-time display selected in settings. It should not be confused with the lock screen or with an always-on display. If the expectation is for content to appear while the phone is unplugged, or immediately after pressing the power button, the documented screen-saver trigger does not match that expectation: choose a supported charging condition and allow the screen to time out.
Wireless charging is optional for the feature unless Restrict to wireless charging is enabled. Pixel 9 supports Qi-certified fast wireless charging, but that capability does not mean wireless charging is required to fix a misconfigured screen saver or use it under the ordinary While charging condition.
Keeping these features separate helps narrow the complaint. If the phone behaves as expected in the screen-saver preview but you are expecting content on the lock screen or while unplugged, changing the screen saver may not address that expectation. Conversely, if the screen saver should start during charging but does not, revisit its explicit trigger and timeout behavior rather than changing unrelated display settings.

Quick diagnostic checklist
Before changing several settings at once, work through this short sequence and note what happens:
- Is Use screen saver turned on?
- Is the selected When to show condition appropriate for the way the phone is charging and positioned?
- Is Restrict to wireless charging enabled, and if so, is the test being made while wirelessly charging?
- Did the screen time out on its own, rather than being turned off with the power button?
- Does Use screen saver preview the intended screen saver?
- If the problem is content, is the intended option selected, and are its source settings and necessary permissions correct?
- If the display changes only in a dim room, is Low light mode configured as desired?
If the answer to one of the first four questions is no, correct the trigger before troubleshooting the content. If the preview itself is wrong, focus on the selected screen saver, source, and permissions. If the preview is right but automatic startup fails, repeat the test with the correct charging and timeout conditions. If only the dim-room appearance differs, check low-light behavior. This is a practical way to isolate the relevant setting without treating all symptoms as the same problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my Pixel 9 screen saver start?
In Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver, turn on Use screen saver and choose While charging or While upright and charging. Check whether Restrict to wireless charging is enabled, then connect the phone under the required condition and let the screen time out. Google says the screen saver will not start if you turn off the display with the Power button.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan the Pixel 9 screen saver start when the phone is unplugged?
The documented screen-saver start choices are While charging and While upright and charging. It is a charging-time display, not a general idle screen for when the phone is unplugged.
Do I need a wireless charger for the Pixel 9 screen saver?
No, not unless Restrict to wireless charging is enabled. That option limits the screen saver to wireless charging; otherwise, use the ordinary charging condition you selected. Pixel 9 supports Qi-certified fast wireless charging, but it is not required for a normal screen-saver setup.
Why does my Pixel 9 show a clock or turn the screen off in a dark room?
Check Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver > Low light mode. Google says the default in dim surroundings is a low-light clock, and the setting can be adjusted to switch to that clock or turn the screen off.
How do I fix missing weather or photos in the screen saver?
Confirm the intended screen saver is selected. For a personal photo frame, review its Photos source or settings and make sure it has access to photos and media. Real-time weather requires location permission set to Always allow. If the relevant source remains unavailable after those checks, Google’s published instructions do not specify a deeper Pixel 9-specific recovery step.

Does tapping Use screen saver prove automatic startup is working?
It previews the selected configuration without waiting for the normal timeout. Automatic startup still depends on meeting the selected charging condition and letting the screen time out, so test those separately.
The Bottom Line
For a Pixel 9 screen saver that will not start, enable it, confirm the charging condition and any wireless-only restriction, and let the screen time out instead of pressing the power button. If it starts with the wrong content, check the selection, photo or weather source, and required permissions; if the display changes in dim light, review Low light mode.
