If you searched for “Sonic PICO PARK,” the multiplayer game supported by the official Steam listing is PICO PARK, developed and published by TECOPARK. The listing describes a cooperative action-puzzle game for 2–8 players with online and shared/split-screen co-op; it does not identify the game as a Sonic title.
To fix a failed session, first separate the problem into the right layer: private lobby discovery, Steam or network reachability, or local keyboard/controller assignment. For a private online game, the current direct method is for the host to create a match and share its lobby ID. If that fails, check Steam status, test the router or connection path, review firewall and interfering software, and only then troubleshoot local controls.
Identify the game and the type of failure first
The official Steam support listing names the game PICO PARK and identifies TECOPARK as its developer and publisher. The available official information does not associate this game with Sonic. That matters because searching for a Sonic-specific fix can lead you to instructions for a different game, platform, or network system.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPICO PARK supports 2–8 players in online co-op and shared/split-screen co-op. A lobby problem can therefore mean several different things: a friend cannot discover or join the online room, Steam cannot maintain a connection, the host’s network is blocking traffic, or players are connected but local inputs are assigned to the wrong character. These are separate faults and require different remedies.

Use the symptom to choose the first check
| What you see | Most relevant layer | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Your friend cannot find or join a private room | Online session discovery | Create a private match and send the lobby ID |
| The lobby will not connect, or players disconnect | Steam or network reachability | Check Steam Server Status, then test the router and connection path |
| The game connects, but two people control the same character | Local input mapping | Check keyboard assignment or Game Pad Config |
| A controller works incorrectly or buttons are mapped unexpectedly | Local controller configuration | Apply Steam’s Official controller layout and retest |
| More than five Xbox controllers are connected | Controller support configuration | Enable Xbox Extended Feature Support in Steam Controller Settings |
Do not treat an input-assignment symptom as proof of an internet failure. Conversely, changing keyboard controls will not repair a blocked Steam connection.
1. Confirm every player is running the same PICO PARK setup
Before changing network settings, confirm that every participant launched the same PICO PARK game and that Steam and the game are up to date. Restart Steam after applying an update, then restart the game on each computer.
This is a general platform check rather than a documented PICO PARK-specific version-mismatch remedy. It is still a useful first step because different game builds or an outdated Steam client can make later troubleshooting misleading.

- Close PICO PARK on every participating computer.
- Exit and relaunch Steam on each computer.
- Install any pending Steam or PICO PARK updates.
- Launch PICO PARK again and test with one host and one joining player before adding the remaining participants.
Testing with a small session helps you identify whether the failure occurs during room creation, joining, or scaling up the number of players. It does not establish that a version mismatch caused the original problem; it simply removes an avoidable variable.
2. Create and join a private lobby with its ID
For private matchmaking, use the lobby-ID method rather than relying on older public-lobby discovery directions. TECOPARK’s official Steam Community announcement dated November 6, 2025, says that private matchmaking via lobby ID was added.
Host procedure
- Launch PICO PARK and choose the online multiplayer option.
- Create the private match as the host.
- Locate the lobby ID shown by the game.
- Send that ID to the intended participants through your normal private chat channel.
- Keep the lobby open while each player enters the ID and attempts to join.
Joining-player procedure
- Launch the same PICO PARK game and open its online multiplayer menu.
- Choose the option for joining by lobby ID.
- Enter the host’s ID exactly as displayed.
- Submit the ID and wait for the host’s room to load.
This method addresses session discovery: it gives the joining player a direct identifier for the intended private room. It does not bypass Steam outages, a firewall that blocks Steam, a managed network that restricts required traffic, or a broken local connection. If the ID is entered correctly but the join still fails, continue with the platform and network checks below.

When an older guide sends you to public-lobby browsing
Public-lobby discovery instructions may describe an earlier way to find a room. They should not be presented as the only current route for a private game because TECOPARK added lobby-ID private matchmaking in November 2025. For a group that already knows who should join, the host-created room and shared ID are the more direct workflow.
3. Check whether Steam itself is having a connection problem
Before changing local settings, check Steam Server Status. Steam’s network troubleshooting guidance recommends this check because an outage or service disruption can affect lobby creation and joining even when your home network is working normally.
Interpret the result
- If Steam shows a service problem: wait and retest later rather than repeatedly changing firewall, router, or controller settings.
- If Steam appears operational: continue with the local connection tests. A normal status does not prove that your individual network path is healthy.
- If only one player is affected: have that player perform the router, wired-link, and firewall checks first.
- If every player fails at the same time: compare the timing with Steam status and test again from a different network when practical.
Steam’s guidance is platform-level. It does not publish a PICO PARK-specific lobby-failure rate, and no authoritative statistic establishes how often PICO PARK disconnects. Treat individual reports as clues, not as a measured reliability rate.
4. Isolate the router and local connection path
Steam recommends testing the router and connection quality when a game cannot connect or repeatedly drops. The purpose is to determine whether the local path between a computer and the internet is involved.
Run a controlled connection test
- Stop the PICO PARK session.
- Restart the router using the router maker’s normal procedure, then wait until the connection is fully restored.
- Reconnect the computer and launch Steam.
- Create or join a PICO PARK lobby again with the same participants.
- If the problem persists, compare the normal connection with a direct Ethernet connection when one is available.
Wireless and powerline links can fail intermittently. A direct wired test is useful because it removes the Wi-Fi or powerline segment from the comparison. It is a diagnostic, not a guarantee that every PICO PARK failure is caused by wireless interference, distance, or signal strength.

What the wired comparison tells you
- Works over Ethernet but not over the usual link: investigate the wireless or powerline path, its stability, and its placement. The test shows that the removed link is involved; it does not identify one specific cause.
- Fails over both Ethernet and the usual link: continue with Steam status, firewall, background software, and managed-network checks.
- Only one participant fails: focus on that participant’s connection and computer rather than changing every player’s setup.
Do not buy a cable as a guaranteed PICO PARK fix. A cable is useful only as an optional way to perform this comparison.

5. Review firewalls and applications that can interfere
Steam says firewall rules can prevent Steam from connecting, including after Steam is installed or updated. Security software, traffic filters, VPN or proxy configurations, and other background programs can also interfere with connections. Steam recommends reviewing those programs as part of network troubleshooting.
Check the computer’s firewall rules
- Open the firewall or security product’s application-allow list on the affected computer.
- Check that Steam is allowed to communicate on the network profile you are using.
- If Steam was recently installed or updated, review the rule again; an update can leave an old or incomplete permission.
- Apply the change, restart Steam, and retest the lobby.
The exact menu names differ by operating system and security product, so use the product’s current help instructions rather than deleting random rules. Do not disable protection permanently. If you perform a short diagnostic test with a security product paused, restore protection immediately and create an appropriate allow rule instead.
Reduce background interference
Close nonessential overlays, traffic-management tools, and other applications one at a time, then retest. Changing one variable per attempt makes it possible to identify an interfering program. If the lobby works only after a particular application is closed, consult that application’s documentation for an exception or compatible mode.
Managed networks, proxies, and blocked ports
Steam notes that some university networks or proxies block ports that Steam requires. On a school, workplace, hotel, or other managed network, contact the network administrator rather than trying to bypass policy. Steam also notes that other Steam games may require additional ports. Do not invent or apply a PICO PARK-specific port list from unrelated games; the available guidance does not establish one.
6. Separate local keyboard and controller problems from online connectivity
If players can enter the session but the wrong character responds to a keyboard or controller, troubleshoot local input assignment separately. TECOPARK addressed this exact issue in a Steam Community support discussion on March 18, 2024.
Keyboard plus controller: understand the default assignments
TECOPARK explained that connecting a controller does not automatically move the keyboard player to another character. By default, WASD is player 1 and the arrow keys are player 2.

For a two-player setup using one keyboard and one controller:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Have the keyboard player try the arrow keys.
- If that assignment is not suitable, open Options > Keyboard Config.
- Assign the preferred keys to the intended player.
- Return to the game and test both players before inviting the rest of the group.
The developer’s statement is specific: the keyboard does not change its operating character merely because a controller is connected. Therefore, seeing WASD still control player 1 is expected under the default mapping, not evidence that the online lobby failed.
Controller mapped incorrectly
If a controller connects but its buttons do not perform the expected actions, open Options > Game Pad Config in PICO PARK and inspect the assignment. TECOPARK also suggested displaying Steam’s Controller Layout screen and applying Official Layout.
- Open PICO PARK’s Options > Game Pad Config and check the current mapping.
- In Steam, open the game’s Controller Layout screen.
- Apply Official Layout.
- Return to PICO PARK and test the controller in a local session.
This procedure addresses input mapping. It will not repair a failed lobby handshake or an unstable internet route, so use it only when the game is already reachable and the symptom is local control.

The PICO PARK Steam store description includes a specific caveat for setups using more than five Xbox controllers: enable Xbox Extended Feature Support in Steam’s Controller Settings.

Use that setting only when your setup matches the caveat. It is not a general remedy for a friend who cannot join an online lobby, and it does not replace the Game Pad Config or Official Layout checks for a wrongly mapped controller.

8. A complete troubleshooting sequence for “my friend cannot join”
Follow this order so that each test answers a different question instead of changing several unrelated settings at once.
- Verify the title: confirm that everyone is launching PICO PARK by TECOPARK, not a different game found through a Sonic-related search.
- Update: restart Steam and install pending Steam or PICO PARK updates on every computer.
- Use private matchmaking: have the host create the room and send the lobby ID.
- Check Steam: consult Steam Server Status before modifying local network settings.
- Test the local path: restart the router, retry, and compare with direct Ethernet when possible.
- Review blocking software: check Steam’s firewall permission and close potentially interfering background applications.
- Check the network owner: ask a university, employer, hotel, or other managed-network administrator whether Steam traffic is restricted.
- Separate controls: if the players are connected but inputs are wrong, use Keyboard Config, Game Pad Config, or Steam’s Official Layout as appropriate.
- Retest with a small group: confirm one host and one joining player first, then add participants up to the game’s supported 2–8-player range.
Keep a short record of what changed and what happened after each test. For example, note whether the lobby ID was accepted, whether the failure occurred before the room appeared, and whether Ethernet changed the result. This prevents you from undoing a useful change or confusing a local control problem with a network failure.
9. When to contact official support
If the title is confirmed, the lobby-ID workflow fails, Steam status is normal, the connection path has been tested, and firewall or managed-network restrictions have been considered, escalate through the official support route rather than applying random port settings.

Quick Recap
What each remedy can and cannot fix
| Remedy | Addresses | Does not address |
|---|---|---|
| Lobby ID private matchmaking | Finding and entering a specific private online room | Steam outages, blocked traffic, unstable local links, or controller mapping |
| Steam Server Status check | Determining whether a broader Steam service issue may be involved | Proving that an individual home network is healthy |
| Router and Ethernet comparison | Isolating the local wireless, powerline, or router path | Identifying every possible cause or guaranteeing a permanent fix |
| Firewall and background-app review | Rules or software that prevent Steam from communicating | Incorrect in-game key assignments |
| Keyboard Config | Which player uses which keyboard keys | Online lobby reachability |
| Game Pad Config and Official Layout | Controller button mapping | Steam service outages or blocked network traffic |
| Xbox Extended Feature Support | Steam controller support for setups with more than five Xbox controllers | General lobby discovery or ordinary two-controller problems |
Final checklist
- Use the correct title: PICO PARK by TECOPARK; the official listing does not establish a Sonic connection.
- Confirm online or shared/split-screen co-op is appropriate for your setup and stay within the supported 2–8-player range.
- For a private online session, create the room and share its lobby ID.
- Check Steam Server Status before changing local settings.
- Restart and test the router, then compare the normal link with Ethernet when possible.
- Review Steam’s firewall permission and potentially interfering applications.
- Ask the administrator about restrictions on university, workplace, hotel, proxy, or other managed networks.
- For keyboard-plus-controller play, remember that WASD is player 1 and arrow keys are player 2 by default; change this in Options > Keyboard Config if needed.
- For a wrongly mapped controller, inspect Options > Game Pad Config and try Steam’s Official Layout.
- If more than five Xbox controllers are in use, enable Xbox Extended Feature Support in Steam Controller Settings.
- Contact TECOPARK through the support channel listed by Steam if the layered checks do not resolve the problem.
