PHP sessions fail for one of three reasons: the request never starts a session correctly, the browser does not return the session cookie, or the server cannot read the session record. Test those layers in that order. A successful $_SESSION write in one request is not proof that the next request can recover it.

Start session_start() before any session access or output, inspect the Set-Cookie response and the cookie on the following request, then verify the effective server-side save handler and storage path used by the PHP worker. On multiple application nodes, make sure every node can reach the same session data.

How PHP sessions work—and where they break

A PHP session has two separate parts:

  1. A browser-side session ID. PHP normally sends it in a cookie named PHPSESSID. The browser must accept that cookie and send it on later requests.
  2. A server-side session record. PHP uses the ID to open data through the configured session save handler. With the default files handler, records are files under session.save_path.

If either part fails, the application appears to lose variables. A missing cookie means the browser starts a new session on each request. A missing or unreadable record means the browser may send the same ID, but PHP cannot recover the stored data. Diagnose both sides instead of assuming that the existence of $_SESSION proves persistence.

Quick symptom-to-cause map

Symptom Most likely layer First check
No PHPSESSID (or custom session cookie) in the response Initialization or response headers Call order, warnings, and output sent before session_start()
Cookie is set, but absent from the next request Browser cookie policy Secure, domain, path, expiration, and SameSite attributes
Cookie returns, but variables are empty Server-side storage Effective session.save_handler, session.save_path, ownership, and permissions
Works on one server but not after a load-balanced redirect Deployment topology Whether every node shares session storage or uses deliberate affinity
Sessions disappear after a seemingly random interval Lifetime and garbage collection session.cookie_lifetime, session.gc_maxlifetime, and garbage-collection settings

1. Start the session before using it or sending output

Put session initialization at the beginning of every request path that reads or writes $_SESSION. If your application changes cookie attributes, set them first on every request. PHP’s documentation states that session_set_cookie_params() must be called for every request and before session_start().

<?php
session_set_cookie_params([
    'lifetime' => 0,
    'path'     => '/',
    'secure'   => true,
    'httponly' => true,
    'samesite' => 'Lax',
]);

session_start();

$_SESSION['user_id'] = 123;

Use secure => true only when the request is served over HTTPS. During an HTTP test, a Secure cookie will not be returned by the browser, making a working session look broken. For an HTTPS-only production site, Secure should be enabled after HTTPS is correctly terminated and forwarded through any proxy.

Check for headers already sent

Cookies are response headers. Any HTML, accidental whitespace, UTF-8 byte-order mark, debugging output, or warning emitted before session_start() can prevent PHP from sending them. Keep the call before templates and redirects. If you receive a warning about headers, locate the first output rather than suppressing the warning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
<?php
if (headers_sent($file, $line)) {
    error_log("Headers already sent by {$file}:{$line}");
}

$started = session_start();
error_log(sprintf(
    'session_start=%s status=%d id=%s',
    $started ? 'true' : 'false',
    session_status(),
    session_id()
));

Record the return value and warning from session_start() in your server logs. Also log session_status() and session_id() temporarily while troubleshooting. Do not log session contents or expose the ID to visitors. A session ID that exists in one request still needs to be tested in a second request.

Verify persistence with two requests

Create a temporary, access-controlled diagnostic endpoint or add equivalent logging to an existing flow:

<?php
session_start();

if (!isset($_SESSION['probe'])) {
    $_SESSION['probe'] = bin2hex(random_bytes(8));
    echo 'created: ' . htmlspecialchars($_SESSION['probe'], ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8');
} else {
    echo 'read: ' . htmlspecialchars($_SESSION['probe'], ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8');
}

Load it once, then load it again with the same browser context. The second response should say read and show the same value. Remove or protect this endpoint when finished.

2. Inspect the browser cookie exchange

Use the browser’s developer tools, Network panel, and open the response that calls session_start(). Confirm that a Set-Cookie header contains your configured session name, normally PHPSESSID. Then inspect the next request and verify that the browser sends the same cookie back.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cookie attributes that commonly block a session

Attribute What it controls Typical failure
Secure Whether the browser sends the cookie only over a secure connection Set while testing with plain HTTP, so the cookie is not sent
Domain Which host names may receive the cookie Cookie is scoped to a host that differs from the URL used after a redirect
Path Which URL paths receive the cookie Cookie set for /login is not sent to an application under /app
SameSite Whether the browser sends the cookie in cross-site contexts Cross-site login or payment POST does not carry a Lax or Strict cookie
Expiration or lifetime How long the browser retains the cookie Cookie disappears at browser close or at its configured expiration

Check the browser’s reason for blocking a cookie; modern developer tools usually identify a rejected Secure, Domain, Path, or SameSite rule. Also look for a second cookie with the same name but a different path or domain. A stale, narrowly scoped cookie can obscure a corrected configuration.

SameSite and cross-origin flows

PHP documents that Lax and Strict do not send the cookie on cross-domain POST requests. A flow that deliberately requires a cross-site POST may need SameSite=None; Secure, as described by the session-security RFC. Use the narrowest policy that matches the application: keep Lax or Strict for ordinary same-site navigation, and choose None only when the cross-site behavior is intentional and HTTPS is guaranteed.

Test the actual HTTP exchange

An HTTP client can make the two-request behavior visible. Save cookies from the first response and replay them on the second:

curl -i -c cookies.txt https://your-host.example/session-probe.php
curl -i -b cookies.txt https://your-host.example/session-probe.php

Replace the host and path with your own endpoint. In the first response, look for Set-Cookie; in the second request, look for a Cookie: header. If the client stores the cookie but PHP still creates a new ID, investigate server-side storage and whether the request reaches a different node.

3. Verify server-side session persistence

Once the cookie comes back, inspect the PHP runtime that serves web requests. Do not rely on settings from an unrelated command-line PHP installation. Display the effective values from a protected diagnostic page or temporary log:

<?php
session_start();
error_log('save_handler=' . ini_get('session.save_handler'));
error_log('save_path=' . session_save_path());
error_log('session_id=' . session_id());

With the default files handler, PHP creates session files in session.save_path. The PHP-FPM or Apache worker must be able to create, read, modify, and remove files there.

Check the directory and worker permissions

  • Confirm that the configured path exists on the server handling the request.
  • Confirm that the PHP worker’s operating-system user and group can write and read it.
  • Check disk space, inode availability, and mandatory access-control logs if the permissions appear correct but writes fail.
  • Review PHP-FPM, Apache, and application error logs for “failed to open stream,” permission, or save-handler warnings.

Do not use a world-readable directory for sensitive sessions. PHP’s security guidance warns that a directory such as a world-readable /tmp can let other users list session files and hijack sessions. Use a dedicated directory with ownership and permissions limited to the service account and administrators.

If a custom save handler is configured

When session.save_handler is not files, do not search for session files. Verify the handler’s connection endpoint, credentials, namespace or key prefix, serialization format, and timeout behavior. Check its own logs and confirm that the web workers on every node use the same configuration. A successful cookie exchange does not prove that a database, cache, or other session service accepted the write.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check load balancers, proxies, and multiple nodes

Local file sessions are local to the machine. If a load balancer sends the first request to node A and the redirect or AJAX request to node B, node B cannot read a file that exists only on node A. This produces the classic pattern “login succeeds, then the user immediately appears logged out.”

Compare effective settings on every node

For each application node, compare:

  • session.save_handler and session.save_path
  • Cookie name, domain, path, Secure, HttpOnly, and SameSite settings
  • PHP version and relevant runtime configuration
  • System time and proxy or HTTPS-detection behavior

Configuration that is identical in source control can still differ at runtime because of pool-specific PHP settings, environment variables, or deployment overrides.

Choose an explicit state-sharing design

Use one of these deliberate approaches:

  • Shared session storage: place records in storage reachable by all nodes and configure the same handler and namespace.
  • Session affinity: configure the load balancer to keep a client on one node. Affinity reduces cross-node reads but is not a substitute for shared state when nodes are replaced or fail.
  • Application-level state sharing: redesign the flow so the needed state is stored in a shared service or represented by a separately validated token, rather than relying on local files.

Also trace redirects through reverse proxies. An HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect, alternate host name, or changed URL prefix can alter the cookie’s Secure, Domain, or Path eligibility between requests.

5. Distinguish cookie expiry from server-side garbage collection

Two independent timers govern apparent session lifetime. session.cookie_lifetime controls how long the browser keeps the cookie; PHP’s documented default is 0, meaning the cookie lasts until the browser closes. session.gc_maxlifetime controls how long server-side data is eligible for garbage collection; the documented default is 1440 seconds. Garbage collection also depends on the configured probability and divisor, so deletion is not necessarily performed exactly at that second.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Situation What remains Observed result
Cookie expires first Server record may still exist Browser starts a new session because it no longer sends the old ID
Server record is collected first Browser still has the cookie PHP receives an ID with no data and creates an apparent reset
Both expire or are cleared Neither side remains New session is unavoidable

When investigating random expiry, record the cookie’s expiration and the effective lifetime and garbage-collection settings from the same web runtime. Clear old cookies only after recording their attributes; otherwise deleting them can hide the effect of a configuration change.

6. Apply secure settings after basic functionality works

Once the two-request probe succeeds, harden the session configuration for an HTTPS application:

  • session.cookie_secure=On limits delivery to secure connections.
  • session.cookie_httponly=On prevents client-side scripts from reading the cookie.
  • session.cookie_samesite=Lax or Strict reduces cross-site requests where compatible.
  • session.use_strict_mode=On prevents PHP from accepting an arbitrary well-formed ID that has not been initialized in storage.

Set these in the runtime configuration or with the equivalent application settings, then retest redirects, login, logout, embedded pages, and any intentional cross-site integration. Do not enable Secure on an HTTP-only test endpoint and conclude that sessions are broken; fix the transport or test over HTTPS.

Common failure scenarios and targeted fixes

“session_start() does nothing”

Check its return value and logs, then look for output before the call. Confirm that the call is reached on the failing route, not only on an earlier controller or template. Verify that the response contains Set-Cookie; an existing $_SESSION array alone is not evidence of a started, persistent session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The session disappears after a redirect”

Compare the redirect destination’s host, scheme, and path with the cookie’s Domain, Secure, and Path attributes. If the destination reaches another node, verify shared storage or affinity. Inspect both the redirect response and the first response from the destination; either can reveal where the cookie stops being sent.

“PHPSESSID is never set”

Check headers-sent warnings, session initialization order, and whether the response is cached or replaced by a proxy. Confirm that a session is actually started on that request and that PHP can write its server-side record. A failure to save may prevent useful persistence even when header output appears normal.

“The cookie is present, but variables are empty”

Verify that the browser sends the cookie, then inspect session.save_handler and session.save_path from the web runtime. Check permissions and node consistency. If using a custom handler, inspect its connection and error logs instead of looking for files.

“It works locally but not in production”

Compare HTTPS termination, host names, cookie attributes, PHP pool configuration, storage paths, and load-balancer routing. Local development often uses one node and HTTP, while production introduces proxies, multiple nodes, and stricter cookie policies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable production checklist

  1. Confirm session_set_cookie_params(), when needed, runs before session_start() on every request.
  2. Confirm no output or warning is sent before session initialization.
  3. Log session_status(), session_id(), and the session_start() result without exposing IDs to users.
  4. Capture the response’s Set-Cookie header and inspect the next request’s Cookie header.
  5. Validate Secure, Domain, Path, SameSite, and lifetime against the actual URL sequence.
  6. Read the effective save handler and save path from the PHP runtime serving web traffic.
  7. Verify directory existence, worker ownership, read/write permissions, disk capacity, and error logs.
  8. On multiple nodes, compare runtime settings and choose shared storage, affinity, or another explicit state-sharing design.
  9. Compare cookie lifetime with gc_maxlifetime and garbage-collection settings when expiry appears random.
  10. After the probe works, enable Secure, HttpOnly, an appropriate SameSite policy, and strict mode, then retest every authentication flow.

Remove diagnostic endpoints and temporary verbose logging after the fault is identified. Session IDs are credentials: treat them as secrets in logs, support tickets, screenshots, and monitoring systems.
