Fix Phone Hub by using its Android-phone setup flow, not ordinary Bluetooth pairing. Confirm ChromeOS and Android versions, remove any old Bluetooth pairing, verify the same Google Account and current updates, then address feature-specific requirements such as Wi‑Fi for app streaming. A managed school or work Chromebook may require an administrator to allow the connection.
First identify what is failing
Phone Hub is a group of Chromebook-to-phone features rather than a single connection switch. The repair depends on whether setup never completes, the phone disappears, or one feature is unavailable after the connection is established.
- Initial setup: The phone does not appear, setup cannot be completed, or the Android phone option is missing in Settings.
- Connection status: Phone Hub shows a disconnected phone or the phone icon is absent from the Chromebook status area.
- Individual features: Phone status, notifications, recent photos, messages, Chrome tabs, or quick commands do not work even though the phone is connected.
- App streaming: The connection works, but Android apps cannot be opened or streamed on the Chromebook.
- Managed device: The Chromebook belongs to an employer or school and connection settings are unavailable or locked.
Test the basic connection before troubleshooting an individual feature. A failure limited to app streaming, for example, does not necessarily mean Phone Hub itself is broken. Note exactly what you can still use: that distinction prevents you from repeatedly resetting a connection that is already working.

| Chromebook | ChromeOS M89 or later |
| Android phone | Android 5.1 or later |
| Accounts | The Chromebook and phone must be signed in to the same Google Account |
| Internet verification | The devices must be online while Google verifies the setup; features are not available until verification finishes |
| App streaming | A supported Android 13-or-later phone, the requested phone permissions, and the Chromebook and phone on the same Wi‑Fi network |
These are compatibility requirements from Google’s support guidance, not performance guarantees. If either device is below the listed operating-system version, update it where the manufacturer and Chromebook policy allow. A phone running Android 13 is not automatically eligible for app streaming; only some Android 13-or-later models are supported.
Check the account before changing hardware. The account signed in to the Chromebook must match the account active on the phone. Guest sessions, a different personal account, or a work account on one device can make the phone option disappear even when Bluetooth is on. If more than one phone is offered during setup, select the phone you actually intend to use.
If a work or school administrator manages the Chromebook, the administrator can block phone connection features even when the hardware and software meet the requirements. A policy restriction is not evidence that the phone or Chromebook is defective.

Do not pair the phone as a normal Bluetooth accessory. Google’s Bluetooth guidance explicitly states that a phone cannot pair to a Chromebook through the ordinary Bluetooth device-pairing interface. Phone Hub uses its own account-based setup.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the Android phone and Chromebook.
- On the Chromebook, select the Phone Hub icon near the status area, then choose the option to set up or connect an Android phone.
- If the icon is not visible, open Settings > Connected devices > Android phone > Set up.
- Follow the on-screen prompts and select the intended phone if more than one phone is listed.
- Approve the requested prompts on the phone and Chromebook, then wait for online verification to complete.
Keep both devices connected to the internet while this process runs. Bluetooth proximity alone is not enough: Google must verify the connection before Phone Hub features become available. If setup appears to pause, check the Chromebook’s network and the phone’s current internet connection rather than immediately repeating the pairing process.
If the Android phone option is missing entirely, continue with the version, account, update, and administrator checks below rather than trying to add the phone from the Chromebook’s generic Bluetooth list. Buying a cable or Bluetooth adapter will not substitute for this setup flow.
Remove an old Bluetooth pairing and refresh both devices
A previous ordinary Bluetooth pairing can interfere with Phone Hub. This is the first corrective sequence in Google’s Phone Hub troubleshooting instructions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- On the Android phone, open Bluetooth settings, find the Chromebook in saved or paired devices, and remove or forget it.
- On the Chromebook, open its Bluetooth settings, select the phone’s saved entry, and remove or forget that entry.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on both devices.
- On the phone, switch Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, and switch it on again.
- Restart the Chromebook.
- Return to the Phone Hub setup path: the Phone Hub icon near the status area, or Settings > Connected devices > Android phone > Set up.
Remove the saved entry on both sides; forgetting it on only one device can leave the old relationship in the other device’s list. Removing saved entries is different from merely toggling Bluetooth. It clears the relationship created by the unsupported generic pairing method so Phone Hub can establish its own connection.

This sequence is appropriate when Phone Hub worked previously and stopped after Bluetooth changes, when setup loops, or when the Chromebook shows a stale phone name. It does not erase the Google Account or remove other Bluetooth accessories. After the restart, use Phone Hub setup again instead of manually pairing the phone.
Verify the Google Account, updates, and online status
Use one Google Account on both devices
Open the account settings on the Chromebook and Android phone and confirm that the active Google Account is the same on both. A phone signed in to a different account may not appear during setup, even when Bluetooth is working. If you recently switched accounts, sign out of the unintended account or select the correct account when the setup prompt offers a choice.
Update Android and Google Play Services
If setup fails, the phone option is missing, or verification repeatedly stops, install available Android system updates and update Google Play Services. Restart the phone after updates if Android requests it, then retry Phone Hub setup. Also check for ChromeOS updates, particularly when Bluetooth problems affect more than the phone.
Updates are a compatibility check, not a promise that every phone will gain every Phone Hub feature. A current Android version can still lack app streaming support if that model is not one of the supported devices.
Keep both devices online during verification
Phone Hub features are withheld until Google can verify the device connection. Check that the Chromebook has a working internet connection and that the phone can reach the internet over its current connection. A phone may be nearby and Bluetooth-enabled yet still fail verification when internet access is interrupted.
Do not confuse the verification requirement with the later operating state of every feature. Google notes that some Phone Hub features remain usable while the Chromebook is offline once the connection has been established. The same-Wi‑Fi requirement is specifically important for app streaming, not a universal requirement for all Phone Hub functions.
Fix a connection when only one Phone Hub feature fails
Once the phone is connected, each Phone Hub feature can have its own switch, permission, or availability condition. Check the affected feature in the Phone Hub controls and in the phone’s requested permissions before repeating the complete setup. The phone status display, quick commands, Chrome tabs, notifications, recent photos, messaging, and app streaming are separate capabilities; one can fail while the others continue to work.

Notifications
Reopen Phone Hub settings on the Chromebook and check that notification sharing is enabled. On the phone, approve any notification-access prompt requested during setup. If the phone’s notification settings have changed since setup, review the permission and regrant it when Android presents that option, then reconnect.

Recent photos
Confirm that the recent-photos option is enabled in Phone Hub and that the phone has completed account verification. A connection can remain active while a disabled feature produces no photos. If the basic phone status and other controls still work, focus on this toggle and the requested phone permission rather than deleting the whole connection.
Messages and quick commands
Check the relevant Phone Hub toggles and approve the phone permissions requested for messaging or remote commands. If a permission was denied, the Chromebook may show the phone as connected but omit that function. Reopen the feature’s setup prompt if available and approve only the permissions you understand and need.
Chrome tabs
Verify that the same Google Account is active in Chrome on both devices and that synchronization is available. The account requirement applies to Phone Hub setup; Chrome tab sharing also depends on the browser being signed in to the intended account. If only tabs are missing while notifications and phone status work, treat it as an account or browser-sync issue rather than a Bluetooth failure.
Phone status and quick controls
If the phone’s battery or connection status is missing but other features appear, reopen Phone Hub and check the connection state. Confirm that the intended phone is selected when multiple phones are listed. A stale selection can look like a total failure even though another phone is the one currently connected.
Troubleshoot app streaming separately
App streaming has stricter requirements than the general Phone Hub connection. Only some Android 13-or-later phones support it, so Android 13 alone does not guarantee compatibility.
- Confirm that the phone is an Android 13-or-later model supported for Phone Hub app streaming.
- Connect the Chromebook and phone to the same Wi‑Fi network. Mobile data on the phone and a different network on the Chromebook do not satisfy this requirement.
- Enable app streaming in Phone Hub and grant every phone permission requested by the setup flow.
- Keep the phone available for any on-screen approval prompt during the stream setup.
- If other Phone Hub features work but streaming does not, treat the problem as a streaming compatibility, Wi‑Fi, or permission issue rather than a failed Phone Hub pairing.
Check the network names on both devices instead of assuming that being in the same building means they share Wi‑Fi. Guest and main networks can be separate. If the phone is using mobile data, join the same Wi‑Fi network as the Chromebook before testing again.
The same-Wi‑Fi condition applies to app streaming, not automatically to every Phone Hub feature. Google notes that some Phone Hub features remain usable while the Chromebook is offline. Therefore, do not disable a working Phone Hub connection simply because streaming is unavailable.
Check whether an administrator blocked Phone Hub
On a Chromebook issued by an employer or school, device-management policy can disable phone connection features or prevent changes to Connected devices. The restriction may appear as a missing setup option, a disabled switch, or a message that settings are controlled by an administrator.

- Ask the organization’s administrator whether Phone Hub and phone connection features are permitted for your account or device.
- Provide the Chromebook model, ChromeOS version, and the exact missing option so the administrator can distinguish policy from a local setup error.
- Do not attempt to bypass a management policy by deleting profiles or changing enrollment settings; those actions can violate organizational rules and may not restore the feature.
- If the administrator confirms the feature is allowed, ask whether a recent policy change or device re-enrollment is required before retrying setup.
Personal Chromebooks are not subject to an employer or school policy, but a previously managed device can retain restrictions until it is properly unenrolled by the organization. Only the organization that enrolled it can appropriately remove that restriction.
Run Chromebook Diagnostics and save the results
When the basic sequence does not resolve the problem, use the built-in Diagnostics app rather than installing a third-party repair utility. On ChromeOS version 90 or later, open it either of these ways:
- Open Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics.
- Open the launcher and search for Diagnostics.
In Diagnostics, use the Connectivity section to check the Chromebook’s default connection and run a Google Services connectivity scan. The scan can show whether the Chromebook can reach the services needed for account verification.
- Run the connectivity test while the Phone Hub problem is present.
- Run the Google Services scan if it is offered.
- Record or save the test details, including any failure message.
- Provide that report to your organization’s administrator or Google support if escalation is necessary.
Diagnostics does not replace the Phone Hub setup flow. It helps distinguish a Chromebook network or Google-services reachability problem from a phone-side pairing or permission problem. Save the report before changing settings again so the failure state is documented.
Use deeper Bluetooth recovery only for broader Bluetooth failures
If Bluetooth itself is failing across multiple accessories, apply Google’s general Bluetooth sequence after the Phone Hub-specific steps:
- Check for and install available ChromeOS system updates.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on.
- Restart the Chromebook.
- Test Bluetooth with another supported accessory to determine whether the issue affects Bluetooth generally.
- If Bluetooth problems persist across accessories, consider a Chromebook hard reset as a later recovery step and follow Google’s current reset instructions for your model.
A hard reset is not the first fix for a Phone Hub connection problem. Use it only when the evidence points to a wider Chromebook Bluetooth failure, and save important work before performing any reset procedure. A hard reset will not make an unsupported Android phone eligible for app streaming or override an administrator policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the right fix for the symptom
| Symptom | Most relevant checks | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The phone never appears in setup | ChromeOS M89 or later, Android 5.1 or later, same Google Account, current Android and Google Play Services, administrator policy | Use the Connected devices setup path, then run Diagnostics if verification cannot complete |
| Phone Hub stopped working after Bluetooth pairing | Saved Bluetooth entries on both devices | Forget the pairing on both devices, toggle phone Bluetooth, restart the Chromebook, and set up Phone Hub again |
| Phone shows connected but notifications, photos, messages, or commands are absent | Feature toggle and phone permissions | Enable the affected feature and approve or regrant its requested permission |
| Only app streaming fails | Supported Android 13-or-later phone, same Wi‑Fi network, streaming permissions | Meet the streaming requirements; do not treat this isolated failure as proof that all Phone Hub features are broken |
| Settings are unavailable on a work or school Chromebook | Device-management policy | Contact the administrator; the restriction may be intentional |
| Bluetooth fails with several accessories | ChromeOS update state and Bluetooth subsystem | Use general Bluetooth recovery and reserve a hard reset for persistent, system-wide failures |
What not to do
- Do not add the phone through the Chromebook’s ordinary Bluetooth device-pairing screen; phones are not paired to Chromebooks that way for Phone Hub.
- Do not buy a Bluetooth adapter, cable, or repair utility as the first response. The documented repair path uses Phone Hub settings, account verification, software updates, Bluetooth refresh, and built-in Diagnostics, so there is no targeted purchase or special cost required.
- Do not assume that a working Bluetooth connection proves Phone Hub is configured. Phone Hub also depends on the same Google Account, online verification, and feature permissions.
- Do not assume that app streaming’s Wi‑Fi requirement applies to every Phone Hub feature.
- Do not repeatedly remove and re-add the phone without first clearing the old generic Bluetooth pairing; the stale entry can recreate the same conflict.
- Do not treat a missing streaming option as proof that your entire Chromebook-to-phone connection is unusable. Check supported-device status first.
When to escalate
Escalate after you have confirmed the versions and account, removed old pairings, completed the Phone Hub setup path, updated Android and Google Play Services, and run Connectivity diagnostics. Include the exact symptom, ChromeOS and Android versions, whether other Phone Hub features work, whether the Chromebook is managed, and the saved Diagnostics report. Those details help support staff determine whether the problem is account verification, a feature-specific limitation, an organization policy, or a broader Bluetooth or network fault.
If the administrator confirms no policy block and the devices meet the requirements, report whether the failure occurs during setup or only after connection. Mention whether both devices were online, whether the phone was previously paired through generic Bluetooth, and which permissions were approved. This narrows the next step without requiring you to purchase replacement hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pair my Android phone to a Chromebook through Bluetooth settings?
No. Google says phones cannot be paired to Chromebooks through the ordinary Bluetooth device-pairing interface. Use the Phone Hub icon or Settings > Connected devices > Android phone > Set up instead.
What Android and ChromeOS versions are required?
Google lists ChromeOS M89 or later and Android 5.1 or later for Phone Hub. App streaming has a separate requirement: a supported Android 13-or-later phone.
Why does Phone Hub show connected but app streaming fails?
App streaming is more restrictive than basic Phone Hub. Confirm that the phone model is supported, both devices are on the same Wi‑Fi network, and all requested phone permissions were granted. Other Phone Hub features can continue working.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDoes Phone Hub require Wi‑Fi for every feature?
No. The same-Wi‑Fi requirement applies to app streaming. Google notes that some Phone Hub features remain usable while the Chromebook is offline after verification.
What should I do if the phone option is missing?
Check ChromeOS and Android versions, confirm the same Google Account is active on both devices, update Android and Google Play Services, and ask whether an employer or school policy blocks Phone Hub. Do not use the generic Bluetooth pairing screen.
Is there a paid adapter, cable, or repair tool that fixes Phone Hub?
No targeted purchase is required by the documented troubleshooting steps. Remove stale Bluetooth pairings, refresh Bluetooth, verify accounts and updates, use the correct Phone Hub setup path, and run built-in Diagnostics if needed.
The Bottom Line
Use Phone Hub’s setup flow—not generic Bluetooth pairing—then verify ChromeOS M89+, Android 5.1+, the same Google Account, current updates, and online verification. Forget old Bluetooth pairings on both devices, refresh Bluetooth, and restart the Chromebook. Troubleshoot app streaming separately because it requires a supported Android 13-or-later phone, the same Wi‑Fi network, and additional permissions. If the Chromebook is managed or the problem persists, contact the administrator or support with a saved ChromeOS Diagnostics report.
