Most PC-98 problems in an emulator come from using the wrong machine profile, a missing Japanese font, a title-specific sound or timing requirement, or a host keyboard mapping that does not match the game. Start by recording the emulator and version, the exact game title, and the symptom: no or distorted sound, corrupt or blank graphics, unreadable Japanese text, misplaced keys, or controls that do nothing. The procedure below is for emulation, with DOSBox-X as the documented example. An original NEC PC-9800 computer needs hardware-level diagnosis instead.

There is no single PC-98 compatibility switch that fixes every title. Treat the emulator, the game’s own setup program, and your host controls as separate layers. That approach prevents a font problem from being mistaken for a video failure, or a missing mapper binding from being blamed on the game’s keyboard layout.

Start with a clean diagnosis

Do not apply ordinary IBM-compatible DOS settings to a PC-98 title. In DOSBox-X, PC-98 emulation is a separate machine family, and the same game can react differently to its configured video, sound, timing and input devices.

What you observe Check first Evidence you need
No sound, missing channels, or incorrect sound PC-98 sound BIOS, the selected emulated board, and any required ROM Game title, sound option used by the title, and DOSBox-X configuration
Japanese text is blank, garbled, or replaced by blocks PC-98 font availability and format Whether graphics are otherwise correct and which font file is loaded
Graphics are corrupt, blank, or the wrong colors Machine type, video mode, GRCG/EGC and GDC settings Title, PC-98 generation or mode expected by it, and the setting changed
Keys produce the wrong action Japanese versus IBM/U.S. keyboard layout and mapper bindings Host keyboard, DOSBox-X version, and the game’s control screen
Nothing responds to a controller Whether the game actually implements joystick input The title’s documentation or in-game options

Change one setting at a time and restart the game after each change. A successful change should be repeatable; if it is not, restore the previous value before testing another branch.

Separate boot failures from in-game failures

If the image does not boot, do not begin with audio or display tuning. Confirm that DOSBox-X is launching the intended configuration, that the image is mounted through the PC-98 workflow, and that the expected drive or disk is visible. A title that reaches its menu gives you much better evidence than one that stops at a boot message. Save a copy of the configuration before experimenting so you can return to a known state.

Put DOSBox-X in PC-98 mode

PC-98 support is not the default IBM-compatible DOS mode. Set the machine type to pc98; DOSBox-X also documents pc9801 and pc9821 as aliases. In a configuration file, the setting is:

machine=pc98

Confirm the setting in the DOSBox-X configuration you actually launch. A correctly mounted disk image does not compensate for an IBM machine profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the image format the title expects

PC-98 software is commonly distributed as HDI hard-disk images or FDD floppy images. Those are different from the IMG files often used for standard PC emulation. Mount the image using DOSBox-X’s PC-98 workflow and verify that the game files are visible before troubleshooting sound or graphics. If the game does not boot, solve the image, drive and machine-type issue first; a non-booting title cannot provide useful evidence about its audio or controls.

Record the version and restore point

Write down the DOSBox-X release and keep a copy of the working configuration. The project’s full configuration reference follows the mutable master branch, so option names and defaults should be checked against the reference matching your installed release. Avoid importing a configuration made for another emulator or for a different DOSBox-X version.

When comparing advice from different guides, check the release date and option spelling. A setting documented for a newer build may be absent or behave differently in an older one. If a configuration file contains several custom overrides, temporarily comment them out and establish that the title works with a minimal PC-98 profile before adding changes back.

Fix “Why is there no sound in my PC-98 game?”

Audio is not one universal PC-98 device. A title may use a PC-98 sound board, a Sound Blaster 16-compatible path, the PC speaker, or timing-dependent behavior. Identify the device selected by the game before changing values.

Enable the PC-98 sound BIOS as a targeted test

  1. Open the DOSBox-X PC-98 configuration options.
  2. Locate pc-98 sound bios and enable it.
  3. Restart DOSBox-X and test the same save or opening sequence.

DOSBox-X documents this as a remedy to try when some games have no sound. It is not stated as a requirement for every title, so leave it disabled if the game works without it.

Supply a real-machine SOUND.ROM when available

The PC-98 guide recommends loading an actual-machine SOUND.ROM when you have one. Use a ROM that you are legally entitled to use and point DOSBox-X to that file using the sound-BIOS configuration. A missing or unsuitable ROM can leave a game silent even though the emulator starts normally. Do not treat any arbitrary ROM as interchangeable: compatibility depends on what the title expects.

Test the ROM change with the same scene and volume settings. If the game’s setup utility offers several boards, record the selected board before changing the ROM; otherwise you can make two changes at once and lose the clue about which layer mattered.

Check Sound Blaster 16 emulation separately

If the game explicitly uses DOSBox-X’s PC-98 Sound Blaster 16 emulation, use the PC-98-specific settings rather than IBM-PC defaults. The documented I/O range is D2h through DEh. In this mode, DOSBox-X explains that an IRQ value of 0 represents IRQ5 on PC-98. Match the values requested by the game’s setup program, then reboot the emulated machine before retesting.

Changing to Sound Blaster does not repair an FM-board configuration. If the title’s setup names an FM or other PC-98 board, configure that device instead and keep the Sound Blaster branch untouched. Silence from one channel can therefore require a different diagnosis from total silence; note exactly what the title produces before and after each change.

Use the timer option only for title-specific failures

DOSBox-X exposes pc-98 timer always cycles, which selects PC-9801-like or PC-9821-like timer behavior. Some older games require the PC-9801 behavior. This is an advanced check for timing-sensitive audio or speaker symptoms, not the first switch to flip. Change it only after the sound device and ROM checks, and record which value worked.

Do not use the timer option as a general speed control. If the game runs too quickly or too slowly, first verify the machine profile and the title’s own requirements. A timer change that happens to alter one sound effect may introduce timing problems elsewhere.

Fix corrupt graphics, blank screens, and unreadable Japanese text

Separate a font problem from a graphics-mode problem. If menus and sprites look correct but Japanese characters are missing, the video mode may be fine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When only Japanese text is wrong

DOSBox-X’s PC-98 guide says Kana and Kanji rendering may require a PC-98 font file. Provide the font in one of the formats supported by your DOSBox-X release, including the documented FONT.ROM option where appropriate. Restart the emulator after changing the font and test a screen containing both Kana and Kanji. A font change should not be used to cure corrupted sprites, wrong colors or a blank display.

Check more than one screen after loading a font: title menus, dialogue, status panels and mixed alphanumeric text can exercise different character sets. If only Japanese glyphs remain wrong while English text and graphics are normal, stay on the font branch rather than changing GRCG, EGC or display rates.

Return to known video defaults before experimenting

Start with the title’s expected PC-98 generation or mode if its manual identifies one, otherwise use DOSBox-X defaults. The PC-98 options include GRCG, EGC and a GDC clock. The documented defaults enable GRCG and EGC. Some games need 2.5 MHz GDC behavior; few require 5 MHz. Try the alternate clock only when the title shows a clock-sensitive failure, and keep a note of the original value.

Because GRCG, EGC and the GDC clock affect different parts of the display path, do not toggle all three together. Record whether the failure is a blank screen, wrong colors, missing sprites, misplaced graphics or a refresh problem. That description tells you whether to revisit the mode, the clock or the font.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the supported display rates

Mode Status documented by DOSBox-X How to use that information
24 kHz Best-supported default mode Use as the baseline when a title does not specify another mode.
15 kHz Not implemented Do not select it expecting an ordinary compatibility fix.
31 kHz Experimental Try only for a title known to require it, and expect compatibility limits.

PC-98 graphics are nominally documented for two display partitions, but some games depend on hardware flaws that allowed four. DOSBox-X therefore cannot promise one universal partition behavior for every title. If a particular game has a known display-generation requirement, follow that requirement; otherwise avoid changing several graphics options together.

Use a controlled graphics test

  1. Launch with the original machine type and default GRCG, EGC and video settings.
  2. Test a screen that reliably shows the fault, such as the title menu or a saved scene.
  3. If Japanese text alone is wrong, change the font and retest.
  4. If the entire image is wrong, test the documented 24 kHz baseline, then the title’s specified GDC or generation setting.
  5. Only after recording the result, test an alternate GDC clock or an experimental 31 kHz mode when the title gives a reason to do so.

If a change fixes one scene but breaks another, treat it as a compatibility clue, not a complete repair. Return to the last repeatable configuration and identify which display feature the affected scene uses.

Fix misplaced keys and unresponsive controls

Keyboard layout and game controls are separate layers. A layout mismatch changes which key code reaches the program; a control problem can instead mean the title expects a different key or does not support the device at all.

Check Japanese versus IBM/U.S. layout

DOSBox-X detects Japanese and U.S. keyboard layouts. Its current guide describes forcing an IBM/U.S. layout for users who need it; older DOSBox-X versions defaulted to Japanese layout. Use the forced IBM/U.S. option only when it matches the host keyboard and the software’s expectations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This forced-layout behavior works only with software that reads the keyboard through the BIOS. A game that reads hardware-level keyboard data can ignore the setting, so an unchanged result points to the mapper or the title’s own control scheme rather than proving the option failed.

Test a distinctive key rather than assuming the whole keyboard is wrong. If letters work but punctuation, function keys or cursor keys do not, compare the game’s control screen with the host layout and then inspect the mapper. A consistent wrong action usually indicates a binding mismatch; a completely dead key may indicate that no event is bound.

Inspect the mapper instead of guessing keys

  1. Open DOSBox-X’s mapper editor.
  2. Find the DOS application event that the game needs, such as a direction, fire action or menu key.
  3. Inspect its current host-key binding.
  4. Add a binding for the physical keyboard key, or delete a conflicting binding and add the intended one.
  5. For a controller, bind the event to a joystick button, axis or hat, then test the event in the game.

The mapper documentation notes that an event with no binding cannot be triggered from the associated host input. That explains a key that works elsewhere but does nothing in the title: the emulator may simply have no event bound to it.

Keep bindings understandable. If two host keys trigger the same event, remove the unwanted one while testing so you know which key produced the result. Save a copy of a working mapper layout before trying a new control scheme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a USB gamepad only when the game supports a joystick

A USB gamepad is an optional control device, not a universal repair. Verify that the specific PC-98 title offers joystick input, then map its buttons or axes in the mapper. Mapping hardware input cannot create joystick support in software that accepts only keyboard commands.

Buying a controller will not fix Japanese keyboard layout, missing audio, a font problem or an unsupported game. Confirm joystick support in the title’s manual or setup screen first, then map only the controls the game exposes.

A symptom-led recovery sequence

Use this order when several symptoms appear at once:

  1. Confirm the environment: identify DOSBox-X and its version, set machine=pc98, and verify that the HDI or FDD image boots.
  2. Classify the symptom: audio, full-screen graphics, Japanese text, keyboard layout, or an unsupported control device.
  3. Restore defaults: begin with the documented PC-98 defaults instead of a configuration copied from IBM-compatible DOS.
  4. Apply one targeted change: sound BIOS or ROM for audio, font for text, video/GDC options for graphics, and layout or mapper bindings for input.
  5. Retest the same scene: changing the test scene can make a timing or loading problem look like a repair.
  6. Keep or revert: retain only a setting that produces a repeatable improvement, and save the working configuration separately.

When the problem is probably game-specific

DOSBox-X documentation does not provide a game-by-game compatibility matrix or guarantee which sound board, graphics mode, partition behavior or input device a particular title uses. If one game fails while another works with the same emulator configuration, treat that difference as evidence of a title-specific requirement rather than immediately changing global settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check the game’s setup program and manual for the named sound device, PC-98 generation, display rate or joystick option.
  • Compare the title’s expected device with the device configured in DOSBox-X.
  • Test the title with one documented change at a time and record the result.
  • Do not generalize a fix that works for one game to the entire PC-98 library.

When asking another player for help, include the exact title and release if known. Different revisions can use different setup defaults, and an answer for one game cannot establish the correct sound board or display mode for another.

If you are using original PC-98 hardware

The settings above describe emulation. An original PC-9800-series computer can fail because of its physical sound board, display connection, monitor frequency support, keyboard, disk media or aging components. DOSBox-X options such as machine=pc98, a font file or a mapper binding cannot diagnose those hardware faults. Identify the exact NEC model and installed boards before applying hardware repair guidance.

What to include when asking for help

A useful report contains the DOSBox-X version, host operating system, exact game title and image type, the complete machine and sound settings, whether a font file is loaded, the observed symptom, and the single change that preceded it. Include whether the game boots, whether only Japanese text is affected, and whether the title’s setup identifies an FM, Sound Blaster or other device. This information distinguishes an emulator configuration issue from an undocumented game quirk.

Describe the failure in observable terms: “the menu is visible but Kanji are blocks,” “music is absent but sound effects play,” or “the cursor key moves the character menu instead of the game.” State whether the problem is repeatable after restarting DOSBox-X. Avoid posting a large configuration dump without identifying the relevant options; the machine type, sound device, font path, display settings and mapper bindings are the useful starting points.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no sound in my PC-98 game?

First confirm that DOSBox-X is running with machine=pc98 and identify the board selected by the game. Then try the documented pc-98 sound bios option and, if you legally have one, load the appropriate actual-machine SOUND.ROM. If the title uses PC-98 Sound Blaster 16 emulation, check its PC-98 I/O range, D2h through DEh, and remember that IRQ 0 represents IRQ5 in this mode. Do not change to Sound Blaster when the game expects an FM board.

Why are the graphics glitched while the text looks normal?

That points more toward a video-mode, GRCG, EGC, GDC or title-generation mismatch than a font problem. Return to PC-98 defaults, use 24 kHz as the best-supported baseline, and test the title’s documented mode or GDC requirement one change at a time. DOSBox-X does not implement 15 kHz, while 31 kHz is experimental. Some games also depend on unusual display-partition behavior, so there is no universal graphics setting.

Why are Japanese characters missing but sprites and menus look correct?

Load a PC-98 font file in a format supported by your DOSBox-X release, including the documented FONT.ROM option where appropriate. Restart the emulator and test a screen containing both Kana and Kanji. A font fix addresses character rendering; it will not repair wrong colors, corrupted sprites or a blank graphics mode.

Why do my keyboard controls not match?

Check the keyboard-layout layer first. DOSBox-X detects Japanese and U.S. layouts and documents a forced IBM/U.S. option, but that behavior applies only to software using the keyboard BIOS. If the game reads hardware-level keyboard data, inspect its own control scheme and then open the mapper editor. Add or remove bindings for the required keyboard event, and verify that the event is not unbound or assigned to an unexpected host key.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I fix PC-98 controls with a USB gamepad?

Only if the particular title supports joystick input. Map the gamepad’s buttons, axes or hats to the game events in DOSBox-X’s mapper editor after confirming joystick support in the manual or setup screen. A USB gamepad cannot create joystick support in a keyboard-only game, and it will not fix audio, display, font or keyboard-layout problems.

Should I change the PC-98 timer setting for every old game?

No. pc-98 timer always cycles is an advanced, title-specific check. It selects PC-9801-like versus PC-9821-like timer behavior, and some older games need the PC-9801 behavior for timing-sensitive audio or speaker symptoms. Test sound-device and ROM settings first, change the timer only when the title gives you a reason, and keep the result documented.

The Bottom Line

Use machine=pc98, verify the HDI or FDD image, and classify the symptom before changing anything. Test sound BIOS, SOUND.ROM, font, video, timer and mapper settings only on the branch they address, one at a time. DOSBox-X’s 24 kHz mode is the safest display baseline; 15 kHz is unavailable and 31 kHz is experimental. Game-specific requirements still matter, so preserve a working configuration and report the title, emulator version and exact symptom when you need further help.
