A DayZ PBO error is usually fixed by following the filename and the exact wording of the message. Verify that the named .pbo exists in the server mod’s addons/ folder, update the client and server copies to compatible Workshop versions, install required public .bikey files in the server’s keys/ directory, and check dependencies and load order. Do not delete storage_1/ as a first step: that can remove persistent world data without fixing the addon.
What a PBO error means
PBO stands for a packed addon file. DayZ loads these files from mod directories, validates their signatures, and checks that the addons required by one mod are available in the expected order. A failure at any of those points can appear as a PBO error even though the underlying cause is different.

The filename and the complete error text are therefore more useful than the phrase “PBO error” by itself. Bohemia Interactive Community’s DayZ error reference includes the explicit kick reason Client has a PBO which is missing a .bisign.
That message requires a signature-file investigation, not a blind reinstall of every mod.

Several classes can occur together. For example, an incomplete Workshop download can remove a PBO and its signature, while a stale client copy can produce a different error after the server file is restored.

Capture the exact evidence before changing files
Write down the complete client message before restarting repeatedly. Record the PBO filename, the mod that should contain it, and whether the message mentions missing data, unequal mods, a missing signature, or a dependency. Preserve the punctuation and capitalization when possible; the wording determines which branch of the repair is appropriate.
- Copy the client error. Include the complete line, not only “PBO error.” If the dialog names a file, copy that filename exactly.
- Read the server RPT. Search around the connection attempt and startup for the same PBO, “missing addons,” signature messages, or an addon that cannot be opened. The RPT is the useful record for engine-level missing-addon and signature failures.
- Separate script failures from addon failures. The DayZ Modding Wiki distinguishes engine-level failures in the RPT from script failures in files named
script_*.log. A script exception may happen after the PBO loaded successfully and needs a different fix. - Note the scope. Identify whether the failure occurs for every player, one client, one mod set, or only after a recent Workshop update. This prevents replacing a healthy server file when the problem exists only on one client.
- Back up persistence. Stop the server cleanly and copy the relevant
storage_1/data before making broad changes. Keep the backup outside the live server directory so an accidental cleanup cannot remove both copies.
Verify the server’s -mod paths
Each entry in the launch parameter must resolve to a real directory relative to the DayZ server root. A typical parameter is:

A path that points to an old folder, a renamed Workshop directory, or a nested duplicate such as @ModName@ModNameaddons will make the server behave as if the addon is missing.
Check the expected directory shape
Open each mod directory named in -mod. It should contain an addons/ directory, and that directory should contain the PBO files supplied by the mod. The PBO named in the error must be in the copy used by the running server, not merely in a download cache or in a different profile.

- Confirm the mod folder is directly under the server root when the launch parameter is relative to that root.
- Confirm an
addons/folder exists and is not empty. - Search for the exact filename from the error, including its extension.
- Check that the server process has permission to read the directory and files.
- Remove no files while diagnosing; first compare the directory with a known-good Workshop download.
If the directory is absent or the expected PBO is missing, repair the download before changing keys, load order, or persistence.
Redownload an incomplete or damaged Workshop mod
A Workshop update can finish partially, leave an old directory beside a new one, or omit a PBO. Stop the server before replacing content so it cannot keep files open while the download is being updated.

- Stop the DayZ server and note the mod name and missing PBO from the captured error.
- Update or redownload that Workshop mod using the same installation method used for the other server mods.
- After the download completes, open the mod’s
addons/directory and confirm that the named PBO is physically present. - Check that the download did not create a second nested mod directory or leave two similarly named versions.
- Restart the server and inspect the new RPT for the original filename. A changed error indicates that the first problem was repaired but another dependency, signature, or version issue remains.
Do not assume that a successful download on the server updates every player’s client. The client copy must also be updated to a compatible version before joining.
Synchronize client and server mod versions
DayZ compares the content requested by the client with the data supplied by the server. Bohemia’s error catalogue includes EQUAL_MOD for unequal mods, and version differences can also produce data-verification or “PBO not part of server data” failures.

When to update both sides
Update the server and clients whenever a Workshop mod changes, even if the mod name and launch parameter remain the same. A client that kept an older PBO can fail against a server that has the new file; a server that updated only one mod can fail against clients using a consistent older set.
Use the enabled mod list as a comparison
- Compare the server’s
-modentries with the client’s enabled collection. - Check spelling and ordering as well as membership. A missing or extra entry can be reported as unequal content.
- Have the client update the named Workshop item, then restart the game or launcher so the new files are actually mounted.
- Restart the server after its update and read the RPT rather than relying only on a launcher status indicator.
If only one player receives the error while other clients connect, begin with that player’s local Workshop copy and enabled list. If everyone is rejected, inspect the server path and version set first.

Signatures establish that a PBO was produced by a key accepted by the server. The two file types have different roles: a .bisign accompanies a signed PBO, while a public .bikey lets the server recognize the signing key.
Understand the missing-signature message
The message Client has a PBO which is missing a .bisign.
specifically identifies a client PBO that lacks its signature file. The client must obtain a complete, correctly signed copy of that mod. Copying a server key alone cannot create the missing signature.

Install the mod’s public key on the server
Typical Workshop mods include a Keys folder containing public .bikey files. Bohemia’s modding-structure guidance identifies these keys as the files used for client-server signature verification. Copy every required public key from the mod’s Keys folder into the server’s root keys/ directory.
- Stop the server.
- Open each enabled mod’s
Keysfolder and list its public.bikeyfiles. - Copy the required keys into the server’s
keys/directory, preserving the.bikeyextension. - Replace stale keys when the mod author supplied a newer key, while retaining keys required by other enabled mods.
- Use signature-verification tooling to confirm that the PBO is signed by an accepted key.
- Start the server and verify the result in the RPT and on a client connection.
A missing or stale key causes signature-verification failures even when the PBO itself exists. Conversely, a correct key cannot repair a truncated PBO or a client file that has no .bisign; redownload the mod in that case.
Resolve dependencies and load order
Some mods rely on addons supplied by another mod. If the RPT names a missing addon rather than only a missing file, install the dependency and load it before the mod that references it. Review the mod author’s dependency list and required launch order.
Read the dependency message literally
Use the exact addon name in the RPT to identify what is absent. The dependency may be present on disk but omitted from -mod, or it may be listed after the dependent mod. In either case, the server cannot resolve the required addon at startup.

Change one relationship at a time
- Identify the mod that reports the missing addon.
- Find the dependency named by the log in the author’s requirements.
- Install or update that dependency and verify its own
addons/*.pbofiles. - Add the dependency to
-modbefore the dependent mod, using the required semicolon-separated syntax. - Restart and check the RPT for a different, remaining dependency rather than assuming all requirements were satisfied.
Load-order changes should not be mixed with a complete mod-folder replacement unless necessary. Isolating each change leaves a reliable record of what solved the error.
Isolate a bad mod with binary search
When the server works without mods but fails with a large collection, adding or removing one item at a time is slow. Binary search narrows the offender by testing roughly half of the list at each iteration.
- Confirm a vanilla startup works and preserve the original full
-modlist. - Enable approximately half of the mods and start the server.
- If the error returns, the offending mod is in that half; if it does not, it is in the other half.
- Split the suspect half again and repeat until one mod or dependency relationship remains.
- With the suspect identified, redownload it, verify its PBOs and signatures, and check its requirements before restoring the other mods.
This method is especially useful when the log mentions several addons or when a recent update made a previously valid collection fail. It also avoids deleting unrelated files and makes rollback straightforward.

Protect persistence while repairing addons
A PBO problem concerns code or data loaded from a mod; it does not normally require deleting the world database. Deleting storage_1/ as a first response can wipe persistent world data and still leave the PBO failure unchanged.
- Stop the server before replacing mod files or keys.
- Back up
storage_1/and keep the backup separate from the live directory. - Do not use storage deletion to solve a path, version, signature, or dependency message.
- Consider persistence repair only after the logs point to storage corruption and a backup exists.
If the server starts after a mod change but the world behaves incorrectly, treat that as a separate persistence or compatibility investigation. Keep the original PBO evidence so the two problems are not conflated.

After the server is healthy, keep a small change record for each mod update: date, mod name, version change, files replaced, keys installed, and the resulting RPT status. This makes it possible to identify which update introduced a failure without rebuilding the entire installation.
- Keep the enabled mod list and its required order in a recoverable note.
- After every Workshop update, verify the server’s
addons/directory and update clients before opening the server to players. - Keep each mod’s public keys synchronized with the PBOs actually installed.
- Review dependency requirements when adding or removing a mod.
- Retain recent RPT files so a recurring error can be compared with a known-good startup.
- Back up persistence before maintenance and never treat storage deletion as routine PBO troubleshooting.
