A warm OnePlus phone is often reacting to a demanding task, a hot room, direct sunlight, or charging conditions. If it feels excessively hot, stop using and charging it, move it out of the heat, and let it cool naturally before doing anything else. Then identify when the heat appears: only while charging, during gaming or camera use, after a recent change, or even while the phone is idle.
OnePlus specifies an ambient operating range of 0°C to 35°C and recommends charging between 5°C and 35°C in a ventilated place. Those figures describe surrounding conditions, not a universal internal battery-temperature limit. Persistent heat during light use, or any battery swelling, discoloration, distortion, or leakage, requires OnePlus support rather than an improvised fix.
Start with the safe response
When a OnePlus phone becomes uncomfortably hot, treat the heat as a condition to investigate, not as a problem to solve by immediately installing an app or changing random settings. The safest first response is physical and reversible.
Recommended Free Tools
- Stop the activity that is generating load. End a game, video call, video recording session, navigation session, or other demanding task. If the phone is charging, disconnect it.
- Move the phone out of direct sun and away from heat sources. Put it on a hard, open surface in a cooler location with air around it.
- Let it return to a normal temperature before resuming use. Do not keep gaming or charging while it is already hot.
- Look for battery or enclosure abnormalities. Discoloration, distortion, leakage, or unusually high temperature changes the situation from ordinary workload heat to a safety issue.
- Do not open the phone. OnePlus says not to disassemble, modify, or repair the battery yourself.
Do not put the phone in a refrigerator or apply an external cooling source. OnePlus’s published guidance does not establish either method as a safe remedy, and a rapid temperature change or moisture can create additional risks.

Know the temperature conditions OnePlus publishes
The OnePlus Phone Safety Guide (2024) says the phone is suitable for operation in an ambient environment from 0°C to 35°C. For charging, the guide recommends an ambient range of 5°C to 35°C and a well-ventilated location. OnePlus Support gives the same 5°C-to-35°C charging guidance in its battery advice.
Ambient means the air around the device. It is not a promise that the battery or processor will remain at a particular internal temperature, and it is not a diagnosis for every OnePlus model. A phone can feel warm while still operating within its design conditions, especially under sustained workload. Conversely, a phone that becomes abnormally hot in a cool room deserves attention even if the weather is mild.
| Situation | Published condition or advice | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Normal operation | Ambient environment of 0°C to 35°C, according to OnePlus’s 2024 safety guide | Keep the phone out of temperatures outside this range when practical; this is an ambient guideline, not an internal sensor threshold. |
| Charging | Ambient environment of 5°C to 35°C, with ventilation | Charge in open air rather than under bedding, inside a bag, or against another heat source. |
| Warning condition | Abnormally high temperature, discoloration, distortion, or leakage | Stop using the device and contact OnePlus customer support. |
Find the situation that triggers the heat
The same symptom can have very different causes. Before changing anything, note exactly when the phone gets hot, whether it is plugged in, what app or task is active, and how quickly the battery level falls. This simple timeline helps separate ordinary workload heat from a problem that occurs during light use or at rest.

Charging adds electrical load while the phone may also be running the screen, radios, or apps. OnePlus specifically warns against using the phone while it is charging as a heat contributor. If the device is hot on a charger, unplug it, let it cool, and reassess the charger, cable, location, and surrounding temperature before trying again.
Heat during gaming or other sustained high-load work
OnePlus Community’s general overheating guidance identifies prolonged high-load activities such as gaming, video calls, and video recording as contributors. These tasks can keep the processor, display, cameras, microphones, and wireless connections active for a long period. Pause the activity when the phone becomes hot, remove any source of environmental heat, and allow the device to cool before continuing.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Heat during video calls or recording
A long video call combines the display, camera, microphone, network connection, and audio hardware. Video recording similarly keeps the camera and storage pipeline active. If heat appears only during these tasks, shorten the session, take breaks, and avoid doing it in direct sunlight or while charging. The symptom alone does not establish a defective battery.
Heat in a hot car, outdoors, or in direct sun
Sunlight and a hot enclosure can raise the phone’s surrounding temperature before any demanding app is opened. Move it to shade and a ventilated surface. Do not leave it on a dashboard, near a heater, or under covers. Resume charging or intensive use only after it has cooled and the surrounding conditions are within OnePlus’s published ranges.

Heat that repeatedly appears when the phone is doing very little is more important to document than warmth during a known heavy task. Record the time, whether it was plugged in, the battery percentage, the room or outdoor conditions, recent software or app changes, and how quickly the battery drained. This information gives support a useful pattern without assuming a particular hardware or software cause.
How to stop overheating while charging
Use this sequence whenever charging seems to trigger the problem:
- Disconnect the cable when the phone is excessively hot. Do not continue charging to see whether the temperature settles.
- Choose an open, ventilated location. Keep the phone on a firm surface with air around it, not under a pillow, blanket, clothing, or inside a closed bag.
- Check the ambient temperature. OnePlus recommends 5°C to 35°C for charging. If the room or vehicle is outside that range, wait for a suitable environment.
- Use the original or a manufacturer-approved charger and cable compatible with the exact OnePlus model. OnePlus’s safety guide recommends manufacturer-approved charging equipment.
- Do not substitute an unverified third-party charger. The OnePlus Support answer on battery life advises against third-party chargers and USB charging; follow the exact model’s documentation when compatibility is uncertain.
- Try again only after the phone is cool. If the same abnormal heat returns, stop charging and contact support instead of repeatedly testing it.
There is no universal charger that can be recommended for every OnePlus phone. Charging standards, cable requirements, and supported power levels vary by model, so verify compatibility for the exact device.

| Charging option | Model compatibility | Approval status | What to do if heat occurs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original OnePlus charger and cable supplied for the model | Use only when intended for the exact model; OnePlus’s published guidance does not establish one universal accessory | Manufacturer original | Stop charging if the phone becomes abnormally hot; inspect the environment and contact support if it recurs. |
| Another manufacturer-approved charger and cable | Must be verified for the exact phone model; a general compatibility list is not stated | Manufacturer-approved | Use ventilation and the 5°C-to-35°C ambient charging range; discontinue if abnormal heat returns. |
| Third-party charger | Not established for all OnePlus models | Not approved by the cited OnePlus guidance | Do not use it as a troubleshooting substitute; choose approved equipment instead. |
| USB charging from an unspecified source | Not stated | OnePlus Support advises against USB charging in the cited answer | Avoid it when investigating charging heat and follow the model’s official instructions. |
Do not interpret a cooler result with a different charger as proof that the phone is fixed. A change in cable, adapter, outlet, room temperature, or charging position can alter the conditions. If the device repeatedly overheats on approved equipment in a suitable environment, the next step is diagnosis through OnePlus rather than accessory shopping.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReduce heat from demanding use
Gaming
Stop a game when the handset becomes too hot instead of trying to play through the heat. Let it cool in shade, then use shorter sessions or breaks. Avoid charging during a demanding gaming session; OnePlus identifies using a phone while charging and prolonged gaming as heat contributors. The published guidance does not provide a universal frame-rate, graphics, or performance setting for every OxygenOS version, so do not assume a particular menu path applies to your model.
Video calls
If a call makes the phone hot, move to a cooler location and avoid charging at the same time. A break between calls gives the device time to shed heat. If warmth happens only during long calls and disappears after cooling, document that pattern; it is different from unexplained heat while the phone is idle.
Video recording
Camera recording can create sustained load, especially in a warm outdoor setting. Stop recording if the phone becomes excessively hot, keep it out of direct sun, and allow it to cool before restarting. OnePlus’s published guidance does not establish a single recording resolution or frame-rate setting as a fix, so model-specific advice should come from OnePlus support.
Navigation and other continuous activity
For navigation or another task that keeps the screen, location services, network connection, and processor active, check whether the heat follows the task or the charging arrangement. If it happens only while the task runs, take breaks and improve ventilation. If it continues after the task ends or appears while the phone is idle, record those details for support.

When recurring heat needs a support diagnosis
There is no one-size-fits-all software fix for a phone that repeatedly overheats. Exact settings, diagnostic screens, known software defects, and repair choices depend on the model and OxygenOS version. OnePlus’s support page lists a “Heating/Battery drains” troubleshooting category, but does not provide the detailed steps behind it; therefore, avoid following generic instructions that claim a menu exists on every OnePlus phone.
Use the official OnePlus support path for the exact model. Before contacting support, gather:
- Model name and, if known, OxygenOS version.
- Whether the phone was charging and which charger and cable were connected.
- The task running when the heat began, such as gaming, a call, recording, navigation, or no active task.
- Ambient conditions, including direct sun, a hot car, or a room outside the published operating or charging range.
- Battery percentage at the start and how quickly it fell.
- Whether the phone has been dropped, exposed to liquid, or physically damaged.
- Whether the behavior began after an update, app change, or accessory change.
Do not promise yourself that a reset, a battery app, or a system toggle will solve the issue when the cause has not been established. Support can determine which model-specific checks and service options apply.

OnePlus’s safety guidance treats an abnormally high temperature, discoloration, distortion, or leakage as a reason to discontinue use and contact customer support. These signs can indicate a damaged battery or enclosure rather than normal workload warmth.
- Unusually high heat that does not match the task or environment.
- Visible swelling, distortion, or a change in the phone’s shape.
- Discoloration around the battery area, port, or back cover.
- Any battery leakage or liquid associated with the battery.
- Heat that returns during light use or while idle after the phone has cooled.
Power down or stop handling the device as safely as possible, keep it away from flammable materials, and contact OnePlus customer support for instructions. Do not puncture, press, open, modify, or attempt a battery replacement yourself. If the phone is damaged, mention that damage when requesting service.

Why heat can worsen battery life
Google Android Help explains that a hot battery drains faster and that this heat-related drain can damage the battery. This is Android-wide guidance, not a diagnosis of any particular OnePlus model. It is a reason to stop repeated heat cycles and investigate the trigger instead of accepting them as normal.
A single warm session during a demanding task does not prove permanent damage. The useful distinction is whether the temperature makes sense for the activity and environment, and whether it stops after cooling. Repeated unexplained heat, rapid drain, or physical battery changes should be escalated.
A practical decision checklist
Use the following branches to decide what to do next without guessing at a hidden fault:
- Is the phone hot right now? Stop intensive use and charging, move it out of sun or other heat, and let it cool naturally.
- Was it charging? Check ventilation, ambient conditions, and whether the charger and cable are original or manufacturer-approved for the exact model. Avoid third-party and unspecified USB charging while troubleshooting.
- Was a demanding task running? Note whether gaming, a video call, recording, or another continuous activity explains the timing. Use breaks and avoid charging during that activity.
- Does heat happen while idle or during light use? Record the pattern, battery drain, recent changes, and conditions, then use the official OnePlus support route for the model.
- Are there warning signs? For abnormal high temperature, discoloration, distortion, leakage, or damage, stop using the phone and contact support. Do not open it.
What this guide cannot determine without your model
The title does not identify a OnePlus model or OxygenOS version. Charging behavior, supported accessories, diagnostic menus, and software controls can differ across devices. The OnePlus and Google guidance linked above do not provide a prevalence statistic, a universal internal temperature threshold, a single charger recommendation, or a guaranteed software repair. Treat the ambient ranges and activity advice as general safety guidance, and rely on OnePlus for model-specific diagnosis and service.
