Start by identifying whether you are playing the full game or the demo, then check the edition’s crossplay control. In the full game, open Character selection screen > System > Options > Social > Enable Crossplay. In the demo, crossplay is under Gameplay, and joining a cross-platform friend uses a generated lobby code. If those edition-specific steps do not solve the problem, collect the diagnostic details Square Enix requests and report the issue through the channel for your platform.
Use this order to isolate the problem
Outriders connection failures can look similar even when the cause is different. A player who cannot see a friend from another platform needs a different check from a player who is already in a party but cannot complete matchmaking. The safest first pass is:
- Confirm whether you are running the full game or the demo.
- List every platform represented in the party.
- Check the crossplay setting using the menu path for that edition.
- If you are joining a known friend in the demo, use the lobby game-code procedure rather than an open matchmaking search.
- If the issue remains, record the requested technical details and send a report through the appropriate official or platform-specific channel.
This sequence separates a disabled crossplay option from a persistent fault without assuming that a settings change fixes every connection problem.
Full game: verify the crossplay option
Exact menu path
- Reach the character selection screen.
- Open System.
- Choose Options.
- Open Social.
- Check Enable Crossplay.
Square Enix’s full-game FAQ describes cross-platform play as an available game option and says crossplay is enabled by default. If the option was previously changed, turn it on before searching for players on another platform.

What happens when crossplay is off
The same FAQ states that disabling crossplay limits matchmaking to people on the same platform. It also warns that queues may take longer. A long wait therefore does not by itself prove that the service is down: first confirm that crossplay has not been disabled on the account or installation being used.
After checking the option, return to the lobby and try the same matchmaking or party action again. If the other player is still unavailable, note exactly whether the failure occurs while searching, accepting an invitation, or loading into the session; that distinction is useful in a later report.
Demo: enable crossplay and use a game code
Turn on the demo setting
- Open the demo’s Gameplay settings.
- Enable Crossplay.
Square Enix’s demo FAQ says crossplay works across the demo’s supported platforms but is disabled by default. The demo instruction is therefore not interchangeable with the full-game path: the demo control is in Gameplay, not the full game’s Social menu.

Join a cross-platform friend
- Open the demo lobby and select Play With Friends.
- Generate a game code.
- Send that code to the friend who is joining.
- Have the friend choose Join A Game Using Code and enter the code.
Keep this flow specific to the demo. The official demo material establishes the code-based invitation procedure; it does not establish that the same menu labels or process apply to the full game.
Crossplay choices and the likely matchmaking result

Use the table as a decision point rather than changing several unrelated settings at once. If the full-game option is already enabled, or the demo’s code flow still fails after crossplay is enabled, move to evidence collection instead of assuming that the toggle is a complete repair.
Choose the right test for the symptom
You cannot find a player on another platform in the full game
Check that the full-game Social setting is enabled on the installation being used. An option left off intentionally or reset during troubleshooting will restrict the search to the same platform. If the setting is on and the player remains absent, record the platforms involved and whether the search eventually times out.

The demo cannot join a cross-platform friend
Confirm that the demo’s Gameplay crossplay control is on for the players involved. Start the invitation from Play With Friends, generate a fresh code, and have the other player use Join A Game Using Code. Record which step fails: creating the code, entering it, or loading the session.
Matchmaking takes a long time
The full-game FAQ explicitly associates longer queues with crossplay being disabled because the search is limited to the same platform. Check that state before treating the wait as a connection fault. No current service-status result is established by the available official Outriders material, so a long queue should not be labeled an outage without a current publisher confirmation.
The setting is correct but the problem is reproducible
Stop repeating the same toggle and invitation attempt without recording details. A report that identifies the edition, platform combination, exact action, and reproducibility gives support a usable starting point even when the menu setting is correct.

Prepare a useful Outriders bug report
Square Enix’s bug-report guidance asks for specific context. Gather it before submitting the report so that the recipient can distinguish a crossplay configuration issue from a platform or session failure.
- Platform: name the platform on which the problem occurred.
- Operating-system version: include the OS version for that platform. For a PC, state the Windows version you are running.
- Exact behavior: describe what happened, what you expected, and what action led immediately to the failure.
- Reproducibility: say whether the problem happens every time or only intermittently. If it is intermittent, explain how often you can reproduce it.
- Game language: record the language selected in the game.
- Multiplayer party size: state how many players were already in the party and how many were being invited or matched.
- Crossplay state: say whether crossplay was active when the failure occurred.
- PC hardware: PC reports should include the CPU, GPU, and RAM.
For a friend-join failure, include the edition (full game or demo), both platforms, whether the demo code was generated successfully, and the exact point at which the join stopped. These details are part of describing what happened and what led up to it; they are more useful than a report that only says “multiplayer does not work.”

Square Enix directs Steam PC players to the official Outriders discussion forum on Steam for bug reports. Include the diagnostic list above and identify the game edition. A discussion forum is a place to submit information and compare reports; it is not guaranteed one-to-one technical support.

Console players
The publisher’s bug-report guidance also points console players to the Outriders subreddit. Treat it as a community reporting and information channel, not as a promise that a support technician will respond to every post. State the console, OS or system software version when available, the party’s platform mix, and whether crossplay was enabled.
Publisher support
Square Enix provides a publisher support contact route from its Outriders support resources. Use that route when the platform forum or community channel does not answer the question, or when you need platform-specific assistance. Follow the current form or contact instructions shown there because the available material does not establish a permanent URL, response time, or a universal workflow.
Network troubleshooting that is not established here
The available official Outriders pages do not establish a current outage, router configuration, NAT procedure, firewall rule, port-forwarding list, VPN workaround, DNS change, or hardware replacement as a current remedy. Do not buy networking equipment or alter advanced network settings solely because a matchmaking attempt failed. Those changes can create new variables and are not substitutes for checking the edition-specific crossplay flow.
If support determines that a platform network configuration is involved, ask for instructions that match your platform, operating-system version, and edition. Use the publisher’s current support route for that advice rather than applying a generic port list or a procedure copied from an unrelated game.
A compact decision checklist
- Edition: mark “full game” or “demo.”
- Party platforms: write down every platform represented.
- Full game: verify Character selection screen > System > Options > Social > Enable Crossplay.
- Demo: verify Gameplay > Crossplay, then use Play With Friends and Join A Game Using Code for a known friend.
- Queue behavior: if full-game crossplay is off, expect same-platform matchmaking only and potentially longer waits.
- Evidence: record the exact action, result, reproducibility, game language, party size, crossplay state, platform and OS version, and PC hardware where applicable.
- Report: send Steam PC issues to the official Steam discussion forum, console issues to the Outriders subreddit, or use Square Enix’s support contact route.
- Escalation: request current platform-specific network guidance instead of inventing router, NAT, firewall, port, VPN, or DNS fixes.
The practical boundary is clear: crossplay settings and the documented demo code flow are the supported first checks. When those checks are correct but the same failure can be reproduced, a detailed report is the next reliable action.
