If Old Reddit won’t load or keeps sending you elsewhere, first check Reddit’s service status, then confirm you’re signed in: Reddit says an account is now required to access old.reddit.com. If Reddit is operating normally and you’re signed in, troubleshoot browser extensions and site data before changing browsers or installing a redirect extension.
1. Check whether Reddit is having an outage
Check Reddit’s official platform-status page, which Reddit links from its Help hub. If it reports an incident, wait for Reddit to resolve it; changing your browser settings cannot repair a site-wide problem. The status page reflects current reports, so check it again if the problem continues.
2. Confirm the address and sign-in state
- Enter
https://old.reddit.comdirectly in your browser’s address bar. - Check whether the address stays on
old.reddit.com, changes to another Reddit hostname, or displays a sign-in or access page. - If prompted, sign in to your Reddit account and try again.
Reddit’s Old Reddit Redirect project documentation says an account is required to use Old Reddit. Reddit’s 2026 corporate announcement also says logged-in access will be required in the short term and describes further planned changes involving Old Reddit. That announcement does not specify every future implementation detail, so access behavior may change.
This is a change from Reddit’s May 15, 2024 administrator post, which said Reddit had no plans to remove Old Reddit. Treat that as a statement of policy at that time, not a guarantee that access rules will remain unchanged.

3. Check for extensions or browser data interfering
Test in a private window
Open a private or incognito window and try Old Reddit again. Extension behavior in private windows depends on your browser and settings, so this test does not necessarily disable every extension.
Temporarily disable extensions
If the private-window test does not help, temporarily turn off extensions that redirect links, change Reddit’s layout, block scripts, or affect privacy. Retry the page. Reddit has warned that some extensions may interfere with its updated authentication pages, which use reCAPTCHA. Its support guidance also recommends private browsing and temporarily disabling extensions for certain desktop login problems.

If the page works with extensions disabled, turn them back on one at a time and retry. This can help identify an extension that changes the destination or disrupts sign-in; it is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix.
Clear Reddit’s cache and cookies if login still fails
For certain login problems, Reddit support recommends clearing Reddit’s cache and cookies. This can sign you out and remove Reddit-specific site state, so try the quicker extension checks first. Then clear site data for Reddit in your browser and sign in again.

4. Check that your browser is supported and up to date
Reddit’s browser-compatibility article, accessed October 4, 2026, lists these minimum versions: Chrome 116 or later, Microsoft Edge 116 or later, Firefox 117 or later, and Safari 15 or later. The accessed article was in French, and browser requirements can change; check Reddit Help for current requirements rather than relying on these versions indefinitely. If your browser is below the listed minimum, update it and retry.

If Reddit loads and you can sign in, but links open the newer design when you want the old one, the optional Old Reddit Redirect extension may fit that specific symptom. Its project documentation describes it as an opt-out from the redesign that can direct www.reddit.com to the old design; it also describes a switch between the old and new versions. The Chrome Web Store listing says it handles Reddit links, bookmarks, and navigation.

What to do if the problem persists
- If Reddit reports an incident, wait and check the status page again.
- If you see a sign-in or access page, sign in; if access still fails, use Reddit Help for account-specific assistance.
- If disabling extensions changes the result, identify the extension involved before restoring your usual setup.
- If you cannot sign in after updating the browser and clearing Reddit site data, follow Reddit Help’s desktop login troubleshooting guidance.
