The fastest safe way to fix an unstable Obsidian vault is to measure startup, test the vault in Restricted Mode, and then re-enable plugins in controlled batches. This separates a community-plugin fault from vault loading, workspace restoration, core-plugin work, or an editor-compatibility problem without deleting your configuration.
Keep the first startup report, change one variable at a time, and record the Obsidian version, plugin version, and exact symptom. A repeatable comparison is more reliable than guessing from a long list of installed plugins.
Start with a controlled triage
Before changing settings, write down what is failing: a long launch, a crash, missing commands, incorrect rendering, broken links, freezes during editing, or a workflow that works only after restarting. Note whether the problem affects every vault or one vault, and whether it began after an Obsidian or plugin update. This record gives every later test a clear pass/fail result.

- Close other Obsidian windows and launch the affected vault normally.
- Reproduce the symptom once without changing anything.
- Record the installed Obsidian release and the versions of plugins you suspect.
- Capture a startup report before disabling components.
- Run the Restricted Mode test described below, then change only a small, documented set of plugins between tests.
Do not uninstall a plugin as your first response. Uninstalling destroys an easy comparison point; disabling preserves the installation while you isolate the cause.

Use the same note, command, pane arrangement, and sequence for each attempt. If the issue is intermittent, record whether it occurred rather than silently repeating until one launch happens to work. A controlled “failed” and “passed” run is more useful than an average based on unrelated tests.
Measure startup instead of guessing
Obsidian has a built-in timing report. Open Settings → General → Advanced, find Notify if startup takes longer than expected, and click the timer icon beside it to open the Startup time window. The report can be copied for later comparison. Obsidian documents this diagnostic in Help and support.
Keep the initial report as your baseline. After each controlled change, launch the same vault and compare the new report with that baseline. The report separates the elapsed launch into these areas:

A high total time does not identify a culprit by itself. The component breakdown tells you where to aim the next test; it does not prove that the largest-looking item is defective.
Run the report under comparable conditions. Switching to a different vault, leaving a large workspace open, or changing several plugins at once makes the numbers hard to interpret. Save both the normal-mode report and, when useful, a Restricted Mode report so you can compare the same startup phases rather than relying on memory.
Use Restricted Mode as the first isolation test
Restricted Mode turns off community plugins for the test while leaving their files installed in the vault. In Settings → Community plugins, switch on Restricted mode, restart Obsidian, and reproduce the same symptom. Obsidian explains this behavior in its Plugin security documentation.
This is deliberately reversible: you are not deleting settings, plugin folders, or saved configuration. The test asks one focused question—does the symptom change when community plugins are ignored? Keep the test narrow by using the same vault and the same reproduction steps you used in the baseline run.
If the symptom disappears
The result makes a community plugin more likely, because those plugins were ignored during the successful run. It is an isolation result, not proof that every plugin is safe or that one particular plugin is definitely responsible. Turn Restricted Mode off only when you are ready to perform a controlled re-test.

If the symptom remains
Community plugins are less likely to be the cause, because Restricted Mode excluded them from the run. Broaden the investigation to the startup component timings, vault loading, workspace restoration, core plugins, themes, and the editor mode involved. This conclusion is a diagnostic inference from what Restricted Mode disables; it is not a guarantee that every third-party interaction has been eliminated.
Find the offending plugin by bisection
When Restricted Mode clears the problem, do not switch plugins on one at a time from a long list unless you have no alternative. A divide-and-conquer test reduces the number of restarts.
- Turn Restricted Mode off.
- In Settings → Community plugins, disable roughly half of the installed community plugins. Disable them rather than uninstalling them.
- Restart and reproduce the same action that previously failed.
- If the failure returns, the responsible plugin is in the enabled half. If it stays gone, it is in the disabled half.
- Split the suspect half again and repeat until a small group, then one plugin, remains.
- Re-enable the other plugins in a separate run to confirm that the result is reproducible.
Keep each test batch written down. A simple list containing the enabled set, the restart result, and the exact symptom prevents contradictory conclusions after several launches.
Use balanced batches when possible, but keep plugins that change the same workflow together only if that reflects how the failure occurs. The goal is not to prove that a plugin is bad in every situation; it is to identify the smallest change that reliably changes this symptom. If two plugins must be enabled together for the failure, test that pair as a unit before separating them.
Bulk toggling with Divide and Conquer
The Obsidian Community Directory lists Divide and Conquer, a community plugin that provides bulk enable and disable commands for plugins and CSS snippets and describes this bisection workflow. It can make large test sets easier to manage, but it is itself third-party code. If you install it for troubleshooting, install it only when Obsidian is usable, record its version, and remove it from the test set if it changes the behavior you are measuring.
Confirm before blaming the plugin
After isolating a candidate, disable only that plugin and restore the rest of the previously working set. Reproduce the issue more than once, including the workflow that originally exposed it. A plugin that is present during a failed launch but absent during a successful launch is a strong lead; it is not a universal claim that the plugin is slow or incompatible in every vault.
Also test the candidate in the context where it failed. A launch delay, a Live Preview rendering error, and a missing command can have different triggers. Record which action fails and whether disabling the candidate changes startup timing, the workflow itself, or both.

Obsidian’s developer documentation states that the application loads all plugins before you can interact with it. Read the load-time guidance in Optimize plugin load time alongside your Startup time report. The key question is whether the delay is concentrated in plugin-related startup or in another phase.

Do not infer a plugin cause from elapsed launch time alone. The same total can result from different components, and the diagnostic is useful precisely because it separates them.
Because all plugins load before interaction, a plugin can affect launch even when the feature you normally use has not yet been invoked. Conversely, a long vault-loading or workspace-restoration phase can dominate the total while plugins are functioning normally. Treat the report as a map for the next experiment, not as a verdict.
Repair editing and rendering problems separately
Some broken workflows appear only after startup: formatting changes, embeds render differently, cursor behavior is inconsistent, or commands work in one editor view but not another. Compare the same note in Source mode and Live Preview before changing a large group of plugins.

A practical editor-mode test
- Open a note that reliably shows the formatting or rendering problem.
- Switch between Source mode and Live Preview without changing the note’s content.
- Record whether the defect follows one mode or appears in both.
- Temporarily disable the plugin or theme that modifies editing, syntax, panes, or rendering.
- Repeat the same edit in the same note and compare the result.
If only one editor mode fails, preserve that observation in your report. It narrows the issue more effectively than describing the entire vault as “broken.” If both modes fail but startup is normal, focus on the specific plugin, theme, note content, or command involved rather than treating the launch-time diagnosis as the explanation.
Collect diagnostics for escalation
When controlled toggles do not resolve the issue, use the command palette’s Show debug info command and copy the result. Obsidian documents this route, along with the startup report, in Help and support.

- The exact steps that reproduce it, including the note or command involved.
- The copied Startup time report from a normal run and, when relevant, a Restricted Mode run.
- The copied output from Show debug info.
- The name and version of the plugin or theme identified by the smallest successful bisection test.
- Whether Source mode and Live Preview behave differently.
Describe what changed between the successful and failed runs. “It is slow” is difficult to act on; “the same vault loads normally in Restricted Mode, and the failure returns when this half of the plugins is enabled” is testable.

Include negative results too. State whether the issue persists in Restricted Mode, whether another vault shows it, and which startup component dominates. Those details prevent support from repeating tests that have already ruled out a likely explanation.
Understand the security and trust boundary
Community plugins are third-party code, not extensions vetted in the same way as Obsidian’s built-in features. Obsidian’s security documentation warns that community plugins can access files, connect to the internet, or install programs. Consider the sensitivity of the vault before installing any troubleshooting utility, and do not grant a plugin more trust than its purpose requires.
Restricted Mode is therefore useful for two reasons: it isolates a major variable and avoids running community code during that diagnostic launch. It does not remove plugin files from the vault, and turning it off restores the previously installed set.
If the vault contains confidential material, prefer the built-in Startup time and debug commands first. A troubleshooting plugin is not automatically necessary, and installing one adds another variable to the test. If you do use a utility such as Divide and Conquer, document that it was added and test again without it when the diagnosis is complete.

Once the immediate fault is isolated, keep the process disciplined so a future update is easy to diagnose.
- Maintain a short inventory of enabled plugins, their versions, and the workflows each one affects.
- After an Obsidian or plugin update, launch the affected vault once and save a new Startup time report if startup changes materially.
- When testing a suspected regression, update or disable one logical group at a time rather than changing the entire configuration.
- Use the same note, command, and sequence for every reproduction attempt.
- Keep a known-good enabled set written down so you can return to it after experiments.
- When a plugin is confirmed as the trigger, leave it disabled while you decide whether to seek an update, report the defect, or replace the workflow.
This approach preserves evidence, minimizes unnecessary reinstalls, and tells you whether the repair addressed launch time, vault loading, workspace restoration, or an editor-specific failure.
A concise decision path
- Need to know where startup time goes? Open the Startup time window and save the baseline.
- Need to test community plugins? Enable Restricted Mode, restart, and reproduce the symptom.
- Problem gone? Disable plugins in batches, split the failing batch, and confirm the final candidate.
- Problem remains? Use the component timings to investigate vault loading, workspace restoration, initialization, or core plugins.
- Startup is fine but editing is wrong? Compare Source mode and Live Preview and check editor compatibility guidance.
- No clear cause? Copy Show debug info, attach the startup report, and provide exact reproduction steps.

Should I uninstall a suspected plugin?
Not initially. Disable it so you preserve the installation, settings, and an easy comparison point. Uninstall only after you have recorded the version and confirmed the behavior.
How many plugins should I disable at once?
Disable roughly half of the enabled set, reproduce the issue, and keep splitting the failing half. Smaller batches are easier to interpret, while bisection reduces repeated restarts.
Can a normal startup time rule out a plugin?
No. A plugin may affect editing, rendering, commands, or a particular workflow without creating a measurable launch delay. Test the exact failing action as well as startup.
What should I include in a support request?
Include the Obsidian and operating-system versions, exact reproduction steps, the Startup time report, Show debug info output, the vault scope, plugin and theme versions, and whether Source mode and Live Preview differ.
Why compare Source mode and Live Preview?
A workflow that fails in only one editor mode can indicate compatibility with the newer editor, a theme, or an editing plugin rather than a general vault failure.
Is Divide and Conquer required?
No. You can disable batches manually. Divide and Conquer is an optional community plugin that provides bulk enable and disable commands for plugins and CSS snippets; remember that it is third-party code.
