If a WordPress Multisite child-site link shows “Object Not Found,” “The requested URL was not found on this server,” or an Apache 404, the web server usually failed to route the request before WordPress could resolve the site or permalink. The reliable fix is to identify whether every child path fails or only one mapped hostname, then correct the rewrite rules, server mapping, or WordPress URL values at the layer that is actually broken.
Use the sequence below rather than repeatedly changing plugins or content. It covers subdirectory networks on Apache, mapped domains, Nginx server blocks, domain changes, and the checks that separate a routing error from a PHP or plugin failure.

In a subdirectory network, a request such as https://example.com/store/checkout/ must pass through several layers:
- DNS sends the hostname to the correct server.
- The server selects the right virtual host or Nginx server block and document root.
- Apache or Nginx applies its rewrite and directory rules.
- WordPress receives the request through
index.phpand identifies the network and child site. - WordPress resolves the page, post, or administration route.
An Object Not Found page normally means the request stopped in the second or third layer. Apache generated a 404 because it treated the child-site path as a missing file or directory instead of passing it to WordPress. A working network homepage therefore does not prove that child-site permalinks, /wp-admin/, /register/, or a mapped hostname are routed correctly.

WordPress’s Apache guidance describes .htaccess as a per-directory configuration file and uses it to implement pretty permalinks. The Multisite subfolder pattern for WordPress 3.5 and later preserves real files and directories, redirects a bare wp-admin path to a trailing slash, and sends other requests to index.php. The rules must be at the document root that serves the network, not in an unrelated child-site folder.
Classify the failure before changing anything
Write down the complete failing URL, including the hostname, path, and whether it uses HTTP or HTTPS. Test the following in a private browser window or with a cache-busting request:

Record the HTTP status and the page design. A plain Apache “Object Not Found” page indicates that the web server generated the response. A WordPress-branded 404 means the request reached WordPress, so the next investigation is different: the site may have an incorrect permalink, page, or rewrite state rather than a host-level routing miss.
Confirm the installation layout and server
Subdirectory networks need root-level rules
A subdirectory network is installed below one WordPress document root, with child sites represented by paths such as /store/ and /blog/. The network’s .htaccess belongs in that root directory, alongside the main wp-admin, wp-content, wp-includes, and index.php entries. Do not paste subdomain-network rules into a subdirectory installation, and do not place the network rules inside an individual child-site directory.
Identify Apache versus Nginx
The diagnostic path depends on the web server. Apache can evaluate .htaccess only when the relevant directory permits overrides and the rewrite module is enabled. Nginx does not read .htaccess; its equivalent routing is in the site’s server block. If you cannot tell which server is handling the request, ask the host or inspect the hosting control panel before editing files.

Check the document root
The hostname can resolve to the right machine and still use the wrong virtual host or document root. Confirm that the selected host configuration points to the directory containing the Multisite installation. A mapped hostname aimed at a different directory will return a server 404 even when the main network hostname works.
Restore the Apache Multisite subfolder rewrite rules
Make a backup of the existing .htaccess before editing it. For a WordPress 3.5 or later subfolder network, WordPress Developer Resources publishes this pattern:

RewriteRule . index.php [L]Use the exact rules generated for the installed WordPress version and network type. Do not merge this block with a single-site snippet, a subdomain-network example, or an older Multisite recipe merely because the syntax looks similar.
What each part is doing
RewriteEngine Onactivates Apache rewriting for the directory.- The authorization rule preserves the HTTP authorization header for applications that need it.
RewriteBase /establishes the root-relative base expected by this subfolder pattern. It must match the installation’s actual location.- The
index.phpexception prevents Apache from rewriting the front controller back into itself. - The
wp-adminrule adds the trailing slash with a 301 redirect, so relative admin URLs resolve consistently. - The file and directory conditions leave real files and directories alone.
- The
wp-content,wp-admin, andwp-includespass-through rule prevents child-site prefixes from being incorrectly added to core paths. - The PHP pass-through rule allows PHP entry points to resolve correctly.
- The final rule sends all remaining requests to
index.php, where WordPress can determine the network, child site, and permalink.
Check whether Apache is ignoring the file
A correct file has no effect if Apache is not allowed to read it. Verify that mod_rewrite is enabled and that the directory containing the network has an appropriate AllowOverride setting, commonly AllowOverride All or a setting that permits the rewrite directives in use. A support report describing Object Not Found symptoms traced the problem to Apache not evaluating the subdirectory .htaccess. This check is more useful than repeatedly regenerating permalinks when every child path fails.
After changing server configuration, reload or restart Apache using your host’s documented procedure. Shared hosting may require the host to make this change; do not assume that editing the file grants permission to override a server-level restriction.

Regenerate permalink rules from WordPress
When the dashboard is available, go to Settings → Permalinks and select Save Changes. You do not need to choose a different permalink structure. Saving prompts WordPress to rewrite its permalink configuration and can repair a damaged or incomplete rule block.
If the dashboard itself returns Object Not Found, do not keep trying to save the page. Restore the known-good Multisite rules manually, verify Apache’s rewrite and override settings, and involve the host if you lack filesystem or server access. Once the dashboard works again, revisit Settings → Permalinks and save once to leave the installation in a WordPress-generated state.
Fix mapped domains and host-level routing
A mapped hostname can fail while the network’s original hostname works. DNS only points a name at an IP address; it does not select the correct virtual host, Nginx server block, Apache document root, or WordPress child site.
Apache checks
- Confirm the mapped hostname appears in the intended Apache virtual host’s server-name or alias configuration.
- Confirm that virtual host’s document root is the directory containing the Multisite installation.
- Ensure HTTPS requests use the corresponding TLS virtual host, not a default host with a different root.
- Verify that the network’s root
.htaccessis reachable from that document root and that overrides are permitted.
Nginx checks
- Inspect the Nginx server block selected for the mapped hostname.
- Confirm its
rootpoints to the Multisite installation and that its PHP front-controller handling passes unknown paths toindex.php. - Check that the block is enabled and that Nginx was reloaded after changes.
- Make sure another, earlier-matching server block is not receiving the request.
A DigitalOcean Multisite report describes an Object Not Found response after a network site was mapped to another domain and directs the investigation toward Nginx server-block configuration. The practical distinction is important: changing WordPress permalinks cannot correct a hostname that never reaches the WordPress document root.
Verify the WordPress domain assignment
After the server points to the right files, verify that the mapped domain is assigned to the intended child site in the Multisite domain configuration. A hostname can reach WordPress and still resolve to the wrong site if its network record or mapping is incorrect. Test both the original subdirectory URL and the mapped hostname so you can tell whether the failure is specific to mapping.

Repair URL values after a domain change
If the error began immediately after changing domains, check the WordPress URL values before making another change in the dashboard. Confirm the siteurl and home values in the database use the intended scheme and hostname, and that the host maps that hostname to the directory containing the installation.
Do not replace URLs globally until you have a backup and understand whether the network uses serialized data. A wrong URL value can create redirects to an old domain, but it does not explain a plain Apache 404 when the request is being sent to the wrong document root. Correct the host mapping first, then correct the WordPress URL values, and finally retest the network, child site, permalink, and administration paths.

Use logging only after the server route is plausible. On a staging copy, or after creating a verified backup, add these constants to wp-config.php before the line that says “That’s all, stop editing!”:

Reproduce the failing child-site request, then inspect the log for PHP fatal errors, theme exceptions, or plugin output. A new entry proves that WordPress executed PHP; an unchanged log combined with a plain Apache 404 points back toward server routing.
Debug mode is not recommended on a live site because it can expose sensitive information and add overhead. Disable the constants after the test, or use a staging copy. Logging cannot repair a missing rewrite rule, an incorrect document root, or a hostname assigned to the wrong server block.

Clear caches and retest the corrected route
Once the relevant layer is fixed, test in a private browser window and clear page, reverse-proxy, and CDN caches that may have stored an old redirect or 404. A cached response can preserve an obsolete domain or path after the server is correct, so treat cache clearing as verification rather than the primary repair.
- Open the network homepage on the canonical hostname.
- Open the child-site homepage through its subdirectory path.
- Open one internal permalink on that child site.
- Open the child site’s
/wp-admin/path and confirm the trailing-slash redirect. - Test
/register/or another network route if it was part of the failure. - Repeat the same tests on the mapped hostname, if one is configured.
- Check both HTTP-to-HTTPS behavior and the final canonical hostname.
If only one URL still fails, compare its path with working links for unexpected uppercase characters, a missing slash, or a child-site slug that has changed. If every child-site path fails again, return to the document root, rewrite rules, and server override checks rather than changing page content.

These distinctions prevent a common misdiagnosis: a permalink refresh is appropriate when WordPress receives the request, but it cannot fix a mapped domain that terminates in the wrong virtual host. Conversely, changing DNS will not repair a missing index.php fallback for child-site permalinks.
When to involve the host
Contact the host with the exact failing URL, the working and failing hostnames, the HTTP status, and the tests you completed. Ask them to confirm which virtual host or server block handled the request, which document root it used, whether Apache evaluated the network-root .htaccess, whether mod_rewrite and overrides are enabled, or—on Nginx—how unknown paths are passed to index.php. Include the time of a fresh reproduction so the server logs can be matched to your request.
If the host cannot provide filesystem or configuration access, do not paste multiple rewrite snippets into random directories. A single, version-appropriate rule set at the correct document root is safer than several conflicting blocks. Keep the backup you made before editing so the host can roll back a change without losing the original configuration.
