When TradingView’s Strategy Tester shows “No data,” trace the path from script to report: an active Pine Script strategy must calculate, reach an order command, submit an order the simulated account can fund, and produce results for the selected report section. A chart signal or plotted arrow alone does not create a trade.

Confirm the chart has an active strategy

The Strategy Report is populated by a Pine Script strategy, not by an indicator or library. Check that the script is declared with strategy() rather than indicator() or library(), and that it is visible and running on the chart. If the report is missing or asks you to apply a strategy, start here.

Verify that the script actually submits orders

A plotted buy or sell condition, alert, or chart marker is not a Strategy Tester trade. The code must reach an order-placement command such as strategy.entry() or strategy.order(). TradingView states: “Scripts declared as strategies must use strategy.* order placement commands (e.g., strategy.order() or strategy.entry()) to simulate orders and display data in the Strategy Report, regardless of any other buy/sell signals that a script’s author may have included in the code.” TradingView Help Center guidance

  1. Find the order command in the Pine Script and identify the condition that guards it.
  2. Check whether that condition becomes true anywhere in the chart history being tested. Plot the condition if its timing is unclear.
  3. Use Pine Logs to see whether execution reaches the relevant logic. If the condition never becomes true, inspect its inputs and the selected history before changing the strategy rules.

Look for a runtime error

A runtime error stops the script’s calculations, so it cannot continue simulating orders. Look for a red exclamation mark next to the script title in the chart pane and click it to view the error. Resolve that error before investigating report metrics or order sizing.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check whether simulated orders are affordable

An order condition can run and still fail to produce a trade if the simulated account cannot support the requested position. Review the strategy’s initial capital, base currency, order size and type, and margin settings. Also check whether an order command supplies its own quantity: command-level quantity can override the default quantity in strategy Properties.

Futures sizing deserves particular care because contract exposure depends on chart price multiplied by the symbol’s point value. TradingView’s example uses CME_MINI:ES1! with a point value of 50: a chart entry at $4,000 corresponds to $200,000 of contract value in that example. That multiplier is an illustration for that symbol, not a universal futures value. Check the current symbol’s point value rather than assuming the displayed price is the contract’s full cost.

Their purpose and effects are described in TradingView’s strategy properties guide. Change settings only after confirming which feasibility or execution assumption is blocking the order.

Check the tested history and report section

If order conditions do not occur in the selected chart range, there are no entries to fill. If some report content appears but individual metrics or visuals say “Not enough data to display,” the strategy may have too few trades or the period may be too short. TradingView calls 100 trades or more an ideal sample for a reasonable assessment of hypothetical performance; that figure is guidance, not a minimum for the Strategy Report to show data.

If the available chart history is the constraint, Deep Backtesting is a separate way to examine more historical data. TradingView’s FAQ describes it as available on Premium and higher plans; check current plan details because availability can change. TradingView’s strategy FAQ

Investigate trades that stop appearing near the present

When earlier trades exist but recent bars show none, TradingView identifies two possibilities: the strategy may have lost all simulated equity and no longer have capital to continue, or an open position may lack exit logic. Review the equity history. Then check that the strategy has appropriate closing logic, such as strategy.close() or strategy.exit(). An entry that remains open may not produce closed-trade metrics.

Separate missing trades from misleading chart prices

Non-standard chart types—including Heikin Ashi, Renko, Line Break, Kagi, Point & Figure, and Range—use synthetic chart prices by default for strategy calculations and fills. That can make results unlike actual market conditions, even when the report contains trades. TradingView recommends standard chart types for strategy testing. On Heikin Ashi, an option to fill orders using standard OHLC values is documented, but it does not remove the non-standard time and price characteristics of other chart types. Interpret the report as a simulation

Strategy Tester results are simulated or hypothetical performance, not evidence of future results. Order feasibility, chart inputs, and fill assumptions shape what the report shows; a populated report does not establish that a strategy will perform similarly in live markets.
