A Nintendo Switch game that will not download is usually blocked by one of three conditions: insufficient storage, an internet connection that is not working reliably, or an account/eShop prerequisite. First record the exact symptom and any error code, then check storage, verify the network connection, confirm the purchasing account, and only after those checks consider console initialization. The correct memory-card standard also depends on whether you have a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2.

Start by identifying exactly what failed

Do not treat every download problem as the same fault. Note what you see on screen and preserve the complete error number and wording before changing settings. That information determines which Nintendo troubleshooting path is appropriate.

What happens What it suggests First useful check
The download never starts Internet access, account authorization, or an eShop prerequisite may be missing. Test the network, then verify the Nintendo Account linked to the purchasing user.
The item remains pending The console may not have a usable connection, enough free space, or permission to begin the transfer. Check free system/card capacity and run the Internet connection setup again.
The progress bar stops partway through A connection interruption or storage shortfall is possible. Compare available capacity with the game requirement, including room for updates, and inspect the connection.
An error code appears The cause is code-specific; there is no single fix for every Nintendo code. Write down the code exactly and use Nintendo’s corresponding code-specific Q&A.
The download finishes but installation or launching fails Storage, card compatibility, or a console/software fault may be involved. Confirm free space and that the card type matches your console generation.

Large downloads can take longer even when the connection is functioning. A slow transfer by itself does not prove that the game or console is defective.

Check storage before changing anything destructive

A download needs enough free space on the location where Nintendo Switch stores software. Updates can require additional space beyond the game’s initial stated size, so meeting the displayed game size exactly may still leave too little room for an update.

SANDISK 256GB microSD Card, Super Mario Super Star Edition | Officially Licensed for Nintendo Switch, UHS-I, Up to 100MB/s Read Speeds
  • Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
  • Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
  • Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
  • Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
  • Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.

Compare the requirement with both storage locations

  1. Open the console’s storage information and note free space in system memory.
  2. If a memory card is installed, note its available capacity as well.
  3. Compare the free amount on the destination with the game’s stated required capacity.
  4. Leave additional headroom for update data rather than filling the location to its last available gigabyte.

If the available space is lower than the requirement, the download cannot complete until you free capacity or use a compatible card. The error may appear as a pending transfer, a failure during download, or an installation error, so storage should be checked even when the message does not explicitly mention space.

Freeing space cautiously

Use the console’s software-management options to remove or archive software only after reading the confirmation screen. Removing software data is different from removing a user or initializing the console; choose the narrowest storage action that solves the shortage. If you are unsure which item can be removed, stop and record the current storage figures first. Do not begin a full console reset merely to reclaim space.

Downloaded software can also be stored on a compatible card. A card is not a universal remedy: it helps only when the card is supported, has sufficient free capacity, and the underlying internet or account problem is not the real cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the size requirement as a planning figure

The number shown for a title tells you what the initial software transfer needs, not necessarily the total space you will need over the life of the game. Nintendo warns that update data can require additional space. Therefore, a card or internal-memory location that barely exceeds the first download can become full when an update is applied. Check the free capacity again if installation fails after the transfer appears complete.

Keep system memory and card capacity as separate figures. Having plenty of unused space on a card does not help if the console is trying to place the software in internal memory, and a full card does not explain a failure caused by a disconnected router. Record both figures so Nintendo support can see where the shortage actually is.

Use the correct card standard for your console

Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 have different documented software-card requirements. Identify the console model before buying, formatting, or moving a card.

Console Supported software-storage card guidance Capacity details documented by Nintendo Important qualification
Original Nintendo Switch family microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC microSD up to 2 GB; microSDHC 4–32 GB; microSDXC 64 GB–2 TB Using microSDXC requires a system update. Nintendo recommends a card with faster transfer speed, but does not state a universal minimum speed or guarantee that a particular card will fix an installation problem.
Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express for software storage Specific capacity limits are not stated in the cited guidance. Do not assume a regular microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card documented for the original Switch meets Switch 2’s software-storage requirement.

The 64 GB–2 TB range is Nintendo’s listed range for the microSDXC class on the original Switch, not a promise that every card in that range has the same performance. The system update requirement applies when using microSDXC on that console. For Switch 2, follow the model-specific microSD Express instructions instead of relying on the original Switch table.

When a card is actually the right next step

  • Use one when the console’s free space is below the game’s requirement or leaves no practical room for updates.
  • Use the card type documented for your exact console generation.
  • Check the card’s available capacity, not only its advertised total capacity.
  • Do not buy a card as a substitute for diagnosing a failed Wi-Fi connection or an account authorization problem.

What to check before moving software

Confirm the console recognizes the card and that its free-space figure appears in the storage screen. Compare the card’s class with the table above rather than relying on a retailer’s generic “Switch compatible” label. A card advertised for the original Switch should not be assumed to satisfy Switch 2’s microSD Express requirement. If the card type is correct but the same error code persists, stop changing storage and follow Nintendo’s code-specific instructions.

Verify the internet connection from the console

Check the network before assuming that the game itself is broken. Nintendo’s wireless setup requires the router’s network name, called its SSID, and the correct password. The connection test then confirms whether the console is connected.

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Internet.
  3. Open Internet Settings.
  4. Select your router’s SSID from the available networks.
  5. Enter the router password exactly, including capitalization and symbols.
  6. Complete the connection test and wait for the console to report that it is connected.

During setup, Nintendo instructs users to place the Switch about 2–3 metres from the wireless router. This is a setup recommendation, not a measured guarantee of download speed or reliability. Once the test succeeds, retry the download and observe whether the symptom changes.

If the test fails or the connection drops

Keep the exact error code and message. Nintendo maintains code-specific Q&A guidance because different codes can have different causes. Follow the instructions for that code rather than applying a random setting change. A successful connection test also does not guarantee a fast transfer; a large game can still take considerable time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wireless and wired options

Wireless is the normal first check. A wired connection can be relevant when the diagnosed problem is persistent wireless instability, but the required equipment differs by Switch model. Nintendo’s internet overview identifies model-specific requirements for wired networking, so confirm your model before buying or connecting a LAN adapter and cable. Neither accessory is a universal solution for storage or account problems.

If you test near the router, keep the console in that position while repeating the connection test so the result is comparable. Do not interpret the 2–3 metre placement as a promised download rate; it is simply Nintendo’s setup guidance. If the console reports a code, use that code’s instructions instead of repeatedly reconnecting without recording what changed.

Confirm the Nintendo Account and eShop prerequisites

eShop access requires internet access and a Nintendo Account linked to a user on the Switch, among other regional and account conditions. Confirm that you are using the user and account that purchased or redeemed the game. An account mismatch can prevent a title from starting even when the network and storage are fine.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
  1. On the HOME Menu, identify the user you selected when opening the eShop.
  2. Confirm that this user is linked to the Nintendo Account associated with the purchase or redemption.
  3. Check that the console is online and that the eShop itself can open for that account.
  4. Return to the title’s download page and retry only after the account and connection checks complete.

The eShop details cited for these prerequisites come from Nintendo’s Japan support material. Country settings, payment rules, availability, and other eShop conditions vary by region. Readers outside Japan should use the Nintendo support page for their own country rather than applying Japan-specific requirements broadly.

Separate authorization from installation

If the eShop opens but the title will not download, keep the account check in the sequence rather than assuming the store session proves authorization for every item. Verify the purchasing or redeeming user, then retry once the network test has completed. If the game downloads but will not launch, repeat the same account check before deleting software or resetting the console.

Fix a download that is stuck on pending

A pending status is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Work through the checks in this order so that you do not erase data unnecessarily.

  1. Record the pending message and any code.
  2. Check free space in system memory and on the installed card against the game’s required capacity, leaving room for updates.
  3. Run System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings, select the correct SSID, enter the password, and complete the connection test.
  4. Verify the Nintendo Account linked to the purchasing or redeeming user and confirm that the eShop opens for that user.
  5. Confirm that the storage card standard matches the console: the original Switch supports the documented microSD family, while Switch 2 software storage guidance specifies microSD Express.
  6. Retry the download and watch for a changed message or a new error code.

If the status remains pending after these checks, do not guess at a universal fix. Use the exact Nintendo error-code guidance when a code is shown. If there is no code, document the console model, available storage, network-test result, account used, and the point at which the transfer stops before contacting Nintendo support.

When a download completes but will not install or start

Installation can fail even after the transfer appears complete. Recheck the destination’s free capacity because update data may need additional room. Then verify that the card is the correct standard for the console and that the card is recognized by the system. For an original Switch, Nintendo’s documented classes are microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC; for Switch 2, software-storage instructions specify microSD Express.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the exact error wording. The official source set does not establish one universal remedy for every installation code, so the code-specific Nintendo Q&A is more reliable than deleting random files or repeatedly reformatting a card. If the game is tied to a different purchasing account, confirm that account before treating the installation as a hardware failure.

Distinguish a completed transfer from a usable game

A progress bar reaching 100 percent only shows that the transfer stage ended. The console still needs enough room for installation and any required update, and it must be able to read the selected storage medium. Check those conditions separately. If the same title fails at the same point, save the message and code before attempting another retry; repeated attempts without a record make it harder to identify whether the symptom changed.

Choose the least destructive storage action

Storage management and console initialization have very different consequences. If you only need room for a game, use the software-management controls and a compatible card where appropriate. Initialization is not a routine download repair.

Why full initialization is a last resort

Nintendo says full initialization deletes internal user data, including save data, software data stored internally, photos and videos, user information, account links, and settings. Software data on a microSD card also becomes unusable after full initialization. That means a reset can turn a download problem into permanent data loss.

Use the save-data-retaining option for a console fault

When troubleshooting a malfunctioning console, Nintendo recommends the option labelled セーブデータを残して初期化, meaning initialize while retaining save data, instead of full initialization. Read Nintendo’s complete procedure and its warnings before selecting any reset option. This alternative is still a major system action; it is not a shortcut for a missing account, an unsupported card, or an ordinary lack of free space.

  • Back out if you have not confirmed which initialization option is selected.
  • Do not proceed while you are trying to preserve internal saves, photos, videos, or account information without understanding the consequences.
  • Use the exact Nintendo instructions for your console model and software version.

A practical decision path

Use this sequence to avoid skipping a low-risk check:

  1. Capture the symptom: not started, pending, stopped, error code, or completed-but-not-installed.
  2. Measure storage: compare free space with the game requirement and reserve room for updates.
  3. Identify the console: original Switch or Switch 2, then match the card standard.
  4. Test the connection: System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings; select the SSID, enter the password, and confirm the test result.
  5. Validate the account: use the Nintendo Account linked to the purchasing or redeeming user; apply regional eShop guidance correctly.
  6. Follow the code: route any exact error code to Nintendo’s corresponding Q&A.
  7. Escalate carefully: consider Nintendo’s save-data-retaining initialization only for a broader console fault and only after reading the full procedure.

What to record during each attempt

Write down the time of the attempt, the console generation, whether software is targeted to system memory or a card, the free capacity shown, the connection-test result, and the exact point where progress stops. Also note whether the message changes after a storage, network, or account check. This creates a useful sequence for Nintendo support and prevents you from repeating destructive steps simply because the original symptom was forgotten.

What not to assume

  • A slow download is not automatically a failed download; large files and connection conditions affect transfer time.
  • Meeting the initial game-size number does not guarantee enough space for updates.
  • A card that works with an original Switch is not automatically the correct software-storage card for Switch 2.
  • A wired adapter cannot solve an account authorization problem or an unsupported card.
  • There is no published universal success rate, prevalence figure, or download-speed statistic that can predict which fix will work for your console.
  • Full initialization is not a safe first-line download step because of its data-loss consequences.

When to contact Nintendo support

Contact Nintendo after documenting the exact error and completing the non-destructive checks when the console still cannot download or install. Provide the console generation, the title, whether the software is being downloaded to system memory or a card, the remaining capacity, the Internet connection-test result, the linked purchasing account, and the full on-screen code or message. This information lets support distinguish a storage shortage, network fault, account prerequisite, card-compatibility issue, and a broader console problem without requiring you to erase data first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my Nintendo Switch game download?

Check the three common prerequisites in order: enough free space for the game and its updates, a working internet connection, and the Nintendo Account linked to the purchase or redemption. Record any error code and use Nintendo’s code-specific guidance.

How do I fix a Nintendo Switch download stuck on pending?

Record the pending message, compare free system and card space with the game’s requirement, run System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings, verify the purchasing account, and confirm the card standard matches the console. Retry only after those checks.

Why does my Switch say there isn’t enough space?

The destination may not have room for the initial software and additional update data. Check free space in both system memory and the card, then remove or archive software cautiously or use a compatible card with sufficient available capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use the same microSD card in Nintendo Switch and Switch 2?

Do not assume so. Nintendo documents the microSD family for the original Switch, while Switch 2 software-storage guidance specifies microSD Express. Identify the console generation before buying or moving a card.

Will moving a game to a memory card fix every download error?

No. A compatible card helps only when storage is the problem. It cannot correct a failed Wi-Fi connection, an account authorization issue, or an error code with another cause.

Should I initialize my Switch if a game will not install?

No. Full initialization deletes internal user data, including save data, and makes software data on a microSD card unusable. Treat it as a last resort; for a broader console fault, Nintendo points to the initialize-while-retaining-save-data option and its detailed warnings.

The Bottom Line

Start with the least destructive checks: capture the exact symptom, verify free space and update headroom, test the internet connection, confirm the purchasing Nintendo Account, and match the card to the console generation. Use Nintendo’s code-specific help for any error code, and never choose full initialization until you understand its data-loss consequences.
