Start by identifying the controller. Joy-Con 2 work only with Nintendo Switch 2; original Joy-Con work with the original Switch and can also connect to Switch 2 wirelessly. If you have Joy-Con 2, install the latest system update, check battery level, reset and re-pair the controller, then remove wireless interference. For a controller that works wirelessly but is not recognized when attached, update or restart the console and reseat the controller carefully. Attached charging requires the Switch 2 to be connected to its AC adapter and powered on or in sleep mode.
If Joy-Con 2 charge on the console but not in a grip, test the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip BEE-010, its USB cable and the Switch 2 AC adapter separately. Replace a grip only when that test isolates the grip as the failed component. Persistent controller or console faults should be handled through Nintendo service.
Identify which Joy-Con you have
Connection and charging instructions differ between the two controller generations. Magnetic attachment and BEE-010 grip guidance apply to Joy-Con 2, not to original Joy-Con accessories.
| Controller | Compatibility | Relevant connection and charging guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Joy-Con 2 | Compatible only with Nintendo Switch 2 | Can attach to Switch 2, pair wirelessly, and charge while attached when the console is powered correctly. Uses the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip BEE-010. |
| Original Joy-Con | Compatible with Nintendo Switch; usable with Nintendo Switch 2 wirelessly | Do not apply Joy-Con 2 magnetic-attachment or BEE-010 troubleshooting steps to original Joy-Con hardware. |
Check the controller and accessory labels before buying a replacement. A grip or cable that fits physically is not automatically the correct model or power solution. If you are unsure which generation you own, identify the console and the accessory model first; troubleshooting the wrong hardware can lead you to replace a working component.

Match the symptom to the right fault path
Start by describing exactly what happens. A controller that never appears in the pairing screen has a different path from one that pairs and then loses input. Likewise, a Joy-Con 2 that works wirelessly but disappears when attached has an attachment-recognition problem, not necessarily a radio problem.
- Cannot pair: the controller does not register through Controllers > Change Grip/Order.
- Frequent dropouts: the controller pairs, but input repeatedly stops during play.
- Not recognized when attached: wireless operation works, yet the console does not register the Joy-Con 2 on the physical side rail.
- Will not charge: the battery indicator does not show charging while attached or in the BEE-010 grip.
Record whether the fault follows one controller, one side of the console, the docked setup or a particular accessory. That simple comparison prevents a good controller, grip or adapter from being replaced unnecessarily.
Do these checks before deeper troubleshooting
- Confirm whether the symptom is wireless pairing, repeated wireless disconnection, failure to register while physically attached, or charging failure. These are separate fault paths.
- Install the latest Switch 2 system software through HOME Menu > System Settings > System > System Update.
- Open the Controllers menu and check each controller’s battery indicator. A very low battery can look like a connection failure.
- Remove cases, debris or other objects from the controller’s attachment area before reseating a Joy-Con 2.
- Test both with the console handheld and, if relevant, while docked. A symptom that changes with the dock points toward placement, cable or interference rather than the controller alone.
- Use one known-good controller and one known-good cable when possible. Change only one variable at a time so the result is meaningful.
Fix Joy-Con 2 wireless dropouts or a controller that will not pair
1. Update the console and verify charge
Use HOME Menu > System Settings > System > System Update and complete any available update. Then open the Controllers menu and confirm that the affected Joy-Con has charge. Nintendo’s wireless troubleshooting sequence starts with these software and power checks because they can resolve basic pairing and response problems without hardware replacement.
2. Reduce distance and radio interference
Use the controller close to the console while testing. Keep the console in an open position rather than inside a television cabinet, behind dense wiring, beside an aquarium, or within a metal enclosure. Move other wireless devices at least three to four feet away. During the test, turn off or relocate nearby wireless headsets, printers, speakers, cordless phones, microwaves and USB 3.0 devices; these can add radio interference. If the connection stabilizes after one device is removed, restore devices one at a time to identify the source.
Do not judge the result from a single button press. Play or navigate long enough to see whether the dropout returns, and keep the console and controller in the same positions for each comparison. A stable close-range test followed by failures only at the normal seating distance points to placement or interference rather than an immediate hardware conclusion.
3. Test the docked configuration
When the console is docked, verify that the dock uses an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. The HDMI cable supplied with Switch 2 meets this requirement; the original Switch HDMI cable does not. Try the same controller undocked and then docked. A dropout that occurs only in one position gives Nintendo support a useful clue about console placement, cabling or nearby interference.
4. Pair the controller again
Open Controllers > Change Grip/Order, then press the controller’s SYNC button. Follow the on-screen order to register the controller. Pressing SYNC once is also the reset step used in Nintendo’s attachment and charging guidance; do not treat a long series of random button presses as a substitute for the ordered pairing screen.

5. Compare controllers before replacing anything
After updating, charging, reducing interference and re-pairing, test another compatible controller if one is available. Use the same console, room, dock and cable for the comparison. If only one Joy-Con fails while others remain stable in the same environment, the affected controller is the likely service candidate. If every controller behaves the same way, the console or its environment is more likely involved.
6. Escalate if the fault follows the controller
If the problem remains after the controlled tests, keep notes on which controller failed, whether it failed docked or undocked and whether another unit worked. This gives Nintendo support a clear reproduction path and avoids ordering a BEE-010 grip for a wireless fault that is unrelated to charging.
Fix a Joy-Con 2 that works wirelessly but is not recognized when attached
This symptom is different from a wireless pairing failure. Nintendo describes a case in which Joy-Con 2 operates wirelessly but is not registered after physical attachment.
- Use the touchscreen to install the latest system update. If the console is already current, restart it.
- Detach the affected Joy-Con 2 and press its SYNC button once.
- Hold the controller close to the correct side of the console. Bring the bottom portion near the attachment area first, then guide the top into position until the controller clicks into place.
- Keep foreign objects, thick covers and debris away from the attachment surfaces while you reseat it.
- Detach and reattach the controller a couple of times, checking after each attempt whether it appears in the Controllers menu.
Use a gentle, aligned motion rather than forcing the controller at an angle. The goal is a clean contact along the proper side, not pressure on the rail. If a case or accessory prevents the bottom from coming close enough before the top, remove it for the test.

Fix Joy-Con 2 charging while attached to Switch 2
Required power state
Joy-Con 2 charge while attached only when the Switch 2 is connected to its AC adapter and the console is either powered on or in sleep mode. A console running on battery, or fully powered off, will not satisfy this charging condition.
Charging procedure
- Connect the Switch 2 AC adapter, model NGN-01, to the console and a working power outlet.
- Turn the console on or place it in sleep mode.
- Check the adapter and cable for cuts, bent connectors, looseness or other visible damage.
- Press the Joy-Con 2’s SYNC button once to reset it, then detach and reattach it carefully.
- Open the Controllers menu and look for the charging indicator beside the controller.
- Allow approximately three and a half hours for a full charge. This is Nintendo’s approximate figure, not a guaranteed time for every battery condition or environment.
Check the on-screen indicator after reconnecting rather than assuming that physical attachment means power is flowing. If the indicator does not appear, test the adapter, outlet and controller in a controlled order. Avoid judging a full battery by the absence of an LED alone; a completed charge can stop the indicator.

Separate console power from controller hardware
If a controller does not charge while attached, try another Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter if one is available. Then compare charging directly on the console with charging in a Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip. A controller that charges in the grip but not on the console points toward the console, its attachment contacts or the adapter path. A controller that fails in both places is more likely to need controller service.

The relevant accessory is the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, model BEE-010. Treat it as a separate component during diagnosis rather than assuming every charging failure is a controller fault.
- Confirm that the grip is BEE-010 and intended for Joy-Con 2.
- Inspect the grip’s USB cable for fraying, crushed sections, bent plugs or an intermittent connection.
- Attach the Joy-Con 2 directly to the Switch 2 and check the Controllers menu for charging status.
- Connect the BEE-010 with an intact cable and the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter, model NGN-01.
- Attach the controllers to the grip and watch both the on-screen battery icons and the grip’s recharge LED.
- Repeat the test with a known-good compatible cable if the first cable is suspect.
If the controllers charge directly on the console but not through BEE-010, Nintendo says the grip may need replacement. The recharge LED turning off can be normal when the controllers are already full, so use the battery icons rather than the LED alone to decide whether charging is occurring.
Test both controllers when possible. If one charges in the grip and the other does not, the grip is receiving power and the problem follows the controller. If neither charges in the grip but both charge directly on the console, the grip, cable or its power path is the stronger suspect. These comparisons are more useful than buying a replacement based only on a dark LED.
Choose the correct replacement only after isolating the failure
| Observed result | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| Joy-Con 2 charge on the console and in the grip | No replacement is indicated; investigate intermittent cable connections, power outlets or usage conditions. |
| Joy-Con 2 charge on the console but not in BEE-010 | Verify the cable and NGN-01 adapter, then replace the BEE-010 grip if those tests pass. |
| Joy-Con 2 fail to charge on the console and in the grip | Try another NGN-01 adapter and cable. If the problem follows the controller, request controller service. |
| Controller is not detected while attached but another Joy-Con 2 works on that side | The affected controller needs service. |
| No Joy-Con 2 is detected while attached | Arrange service for the console and affected controllers, especially when another controller is unavailable for comparison. |
| All controllers disconnect in the same room or docked setup | Recheck console placement, nearby wireless and USB 3.0 devices, HDMI cabling and system software before replacing hardware. |
The NGN-01 adapter and a compatible undamaged USB cable are conditional purchases: they are useful only when testing identifies a missing, damaged or incompatible power component. The BEE-010 grip is not a universal connection fix. Confirm the exact model, cable condition and power source before ordering, because a physically similar accessory may not address the failed part.

Wireless interference and placement checklist
Use this checklist when the controller pairs but repeatedly loses input:
- Place the console in the open with a clear path to the controllers.
- Move the console away from metal shelving, television cabinets, aquariums and bundles of dense wiring.
- Keep nearby wireless devices three to four feet away during testing.
- Temporarily power off wireless headsets, speakers, printers, cordless phones and microwave ovens in the immediate area.
- Disconnect or move USB 3.0 devices that are close to the console or dock.
- Test in handheld mode and in the dock separately.
- Use the Switch 2-supplied Ultra High Speed HDMI cable when docked.
If the issue disappears after one environmental change, restore equipment one item at a time. This identifies the interfering device without replacing a working Joy-Con. If no environmental change affects the symptom and the same controller fails in multiple locations, preserve those results for Nintendo service.

When to stop troubleshooting and request Nintendo service
Service is the appropriate next step when the latest system update, charge check, reset, careful reseat and controlled interference test do not resolve the fault. Contact Nintendo support when:
- A specific Joy-Con 2 remains unusable while other controllers work normally.
- A controller repeatedly disconnects in a clear environment after re-pairing.
- The console cannot recognize any Joy-Con 2 while attached.
- Charging fails with a verified NGN-01 adapter, an intact cable and both direct-console and grip tests.
- Attachment surfaces, connectors or the controller show physical damage.
Have the console, affected controller, accessory model numbers and the results of your comparison tests ready. Repair and accessory availability can vary by region and can change over time. Nintendo’s support instructions current as checked on October 11, 2026 should be confirmed on the regional support site before shipping hardware or ordering an accessory.

Why won’t my Switch 2 Joy-Con connect?
First confirm whether it is Joy-Con 2 or original Joy-Con, install the latest system update, check charge, reduce distance and radio interference, then use Controllers > Change Grip/Order and press SYNC. If only one controller still fails, compare it with another compatible controller and arrange service if the fault follows it.
Why does my Joy-Con 2 keep disconnecting?
Distance, console placement and nearby wireless or USB 3.0 devices can interrupt the radio link. Test with the console in the open, other wireless devices three to four feet away, and the controller nearby. Also test docked and undocked, using the Switch 2 Ultra High Speed HDMI cable when docked.
Why isn’t my Joy-Con 2 charging?
For charging while attached, connect the console to the NGN-01 AC adapter and leave it powered on or in sleep mode. Reset with a single press of SYNC, reconnect, and check the Controllers menu. Compare direct-console charging with BEE-010 grip charging to isolate the failed component.
Why won’t my Joy-Con 2 work when attached?
Update or restart the console, press SYNC once while detached, and reseat the controller by bringing the bottom near first and then the top until it clicks. Remove foreign objects from the attachment area. If another Joy-Con works on the same side, the original controller needs service.
Can original Joy-Con be used with Switch 2?
Yes. Original Joy-Con can be used with Switch 2 wirelessly, while Joy-Con 2 are compatible only with Switch 2. Do not use Joy-Con 2 magnetic-attachment or BEE-010 charging instructions as a substitute for original Joy-Con accessory guidance.

Should I buy a new charging grip to fix a connection problem?
Only if testing isolates the grip. If Joy-Con 2 charge directly on the console but not through the BEE-010 with a known-good cable and NGN-01 adapter, the grip may need replacement. A grip will not generally fix wireless dropouts, pairing failures or a controller that is defective in every charging location.
Frequently Asked Questions

What is the correct Switch 2 charging grip model?
The relevant accessory is the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, model BEE-010. Verify the model and test its cable and power source before replacing it.
What if Joy-Con 2 charge in the grip but not on the console?
Try another NGN-01 adapter, reset the controller with one press of SYNC, and reseat it. If charging works in the grip but not while attached, the console, attachment contacts or adapter path may need service.
What if no Joy-Con 2 is recognized when attached?
Update or restart the console, reset and carefully reseat a controller, then compare with another Joy-Con 2 if available. If none registers, Nintendo advises arranging service for the console and affected controllers.
The Bottom Line
Identify the Joy-Con generation, update Switch 2, check charge, reduce interference and reset or reseat before buying parts. Attached charging requires the console, NGN-01 adapter and the correct power state. Use direct-console and BEE-010 grip tests to isolate the failed component; send persistent controller or console faults to Nintendo service.
