If a Nintendo Switch 2 game freezes, stops responding, or closes unexpectedly, restart the console first, then update the console and the affected game. If the problem continues, check the game’s data, redownload it, and test system memory instead of a microSD Express card. A displayed error code or message may have its own Nintendo troubleshooting steps, and a problem affecting only one title may be a game-specific compatibility issue.
This sequence follows Nintendo’s general guidance for downloaded Nintendo Switch 2 software played on a Nintendo Switch 2 console, including Switch 2 Edition games. It is not a substitute for the separate instructions for original Nintendo Switch games running on Switch 2. Nintendo’s troubleshooting pages reviewed for this guide are for North America; menu labels and support options can vary by region.

First, identify which troubleshooting path fits
Before changing anything, note whether one game or several games are affected, whether the game is downloaded or on a game card, and where downloaded software is stored. Also note the exact wording of any error. Those details determine whether Nintendo’s general downloaded-software steps apply or whether a more specific instruction is appropriate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| What you’re seeing | Best starting point |
|---|---|
| One downloaded Switch 2 game freezes or closes without a specific error | Use the general sequence below, beginning with a restart. |
| A code or specific error message appears | Search Nintendo Support for that exact code or message and follow its dedicated instructions. Nintendo advises this rather than relying only on general steps. |
| Only one title fails, especially at startup or during progress | Check Nintendo’s Switch-game compatibility list if the title is an original Switch game running on Switch 2. For Switch 2 software, check the game publisher’s support information as well as the general steps. |
| Several games fail, or the console itself is unresponsive | Restart, install the available system update, and then test the affected software again. |
| The affected software is on a game card | The general Nintendo article covered here is specifically for downloaded software. Do not assume its download, redownload, or storage-card steps resolve a game-card problem. |
| An original Nintendo Switch game is being played on Switch 2 | Use Nintendo’s separate troubleshooting guidance for original Switch games; do not treat the Switch 2 downloaded-software article as covering it. |
Change one thing at a time and try the game again after each step. That makes it easier to tell whether the problem was resolved and avoids moving to more disruptive recovery measures unnecessarily.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Keep a short note of what happened before troubleshooting: the game title, whether it was downloaded or on a game card, where downloaded software is stored, and whether the failure occurs at launch or after play has begun. If an error appears, record its exact code and wording rather than paraphrasing it. This is useful both when searching Nintendo Support and if you need to contact support later.
Also distinguish a brief slowdown from a freeze that persists, an unexpected close, and a console that will not respond to controls. The general sequence below is for downloaded Nintendo Switch 2 software that freezes, stops responding, or closes. It is not a claim that every lag or game-card issue has the same cause or fix.
1. Restart the console
A normal restart is the first step for a frozen game or software that is not responding. If the console responds to controls, open the Power Options menu and select Restart. After it starts again, launch the affected game and check whether the same problem returns.
Recommended Free Tools
If the console does not respond, Nintendo’s instruction is to hold the POWER button for 12 seconds to force it to shut down. Then press POWER again to turn it on. This is a forced shutdown, not the normal Restart command, so use it when the console is stuck rather than as the first choice when the menus still work.
After restarting, test the same game and, if practical, the same part of the game where the problem occurred. If it now works, keep using the console normally and watch for recurrence rather than immediately deleting software or formatting a card. If it fails again, continue with the system update. A restart is a low-risk first check, but it does not identify the underlying cause on its own.
2. Install a Nintendo Switch 2 system update
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select System.
- Select System Update and follow any on-screen instructions to install an available update.
- When the update is complete, reopen the affected game and see whether it still freezes or closes.
Updating the console is a useful early check when one or several games behave abnormally. If the system reports that it is already up to date, continue to the game update rather than repeating this step.
Use the console’s own System Update screen and follow its prompts. Once the update is finished, reopen the game and check whether the symptoms return before changing other settings. If several downloaded games are affected, it is especially useful to complete this system-wide check before focusing on any one game’s installation.

- Highlight the affected game on the HOME Menu.
- Press the + or – button.
- Choose Software Update, then Via the Internet.
- Follow the on-screen instructions, then launch the game again.
If the issue persists after both updates, move on to checking the installation’s data. Updating is not the same as deleting and reinstalling the game; do not skip the data check simply because the game has been updated.
Be sure to highlight the affected software without starting it, since the update option is in its HOME Menu options. If only one title has trouble, updating that title is a more targeted check than changing storage or using recovery options. After the update completes, test the game again before proceeding.
4. Scan the game for corrupted data
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Select Data Management, then Manage Software.
- Select the affected game.
- Choose the option to scan for corrupted data and follow the prompts.
This check looks for a problem with the game’s installed data before you take the more involved step of removing and downloading the software again. If Nintendo’s menu reports corrupted data, follow its prompts. If it finds no issue but the game continues to fail, redownloading is the next step in Nintendo’s general sequence.

The purpose is to investigate the affected game’s software data, not to delete the whole library or erase save data. Treat the scan result as a decision point: follow the console’s instructions if it identifies corrupted data; if no problem is found but the same freeze or close continues, proceed to a redownload rather than repeating the scan indefinitely.
5. Delete and redownload downloaded software
Nintendo recommends deleting and redownloading affected downloaded software when the earlier checks do not resolve the problem. Redownloading replaces the installed game files; it is different from deleting a save file. Nintendo states that save data is stored in the console’s system memory, while downloadable software can be downloaded again using the Nintendo Account that purchased it.
For the specific message that software was closed because an error occurred, Nintendo’s guidance calls for redownloading to system memory and removing the microSD Express card before doing so. If you are troubleshooting that message, use this more specific path rather than reinstalling to the same card as your first test.
- Confirm which Nintendo Account purchased the game so you can access the software for redownload.
- If the game is on a microSD Express card, remove the card before the redownload when following the unexpected-close error path.
- Delete the affected software using the console’s software-management options. Do not select an option to delete save data.
- Open the Nintendo eShop with the purchasing Nintendo Account and redownload the game to system memory.
- Launch the reinstalled game and check whether the same crash, freeze, or error occurs.
If the software is a game-card title, this download procedure is not the right fix for its installation: the general article is specifically about downloaded software. Use support guidance for the relevant game-card issue instead.
Before removing anything, make sure you can sign in to the Nintendo Account that purchased the game. The redownload instruction concerns the software, not a need to erase the game’s save data. Read menu choices carefully and avoid any option that explicitly deletes save data. If several titles are affected, do not assume you need to redownload all of them at once; start with the affected title and check the result.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
For the message “the software was closed because an error occurred,” follow the more specific Nintendo path: remove the microSD Express card and install the redownloaded software to system memory. For a generic freeze without that message, Nintendo’s general guidance still supports deleting and redownloading affected downloaded software, but the special error-message instructions should not be mistaken for a mandatory first step for every symptom.
6. Test whether microSD Express storage is involved
Nintendo Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards. If the affected downloaded game is stored on one, a useful way to isolate storage is to remove the card and download the game directly to system memory. Nintendo also suggests formatting the card or trying a different card when card storage may be implicated. A new card is not a general-purpose crash fix; first test whether the game works from system memory.
- Try system memory: Remove the microSD Express card and redownload the affected software to console system memory. If that fixes the issue, the card or its stored data may be involved.
- Consider formatting: Formatting erases the card. Back up screenshots and videos stored on it before proceeding. Do not format merely as a first reaction to a crash if you have not tried the less disruptive system-memory test.
- Try another card: If you have access to another compatible microSD Express card, Nintendo’s guidance includes testing with a different card. The reviewed guidance does not establish a particular brand, capacity, or model as a fix.
Save data is stored in system memory, according to Nintendo; downloadable software can be retrieved again with the purchasing Nintendo Account. Still, take care to distinguish software management from save-data deletion when navigating menus, and preserve screenshots and videos on a card before formatting it.
Use the storage test to answer a specific question: does the affected downloaded game still have the problem when it is installed in system memory with the microSD Express card removed? If it works there, that points toward the card or data stored on it as relevant, though it does not by itself identify a particular hardware fault. If the issue remains, avoid buying a card as a guess; continue to the applicable compatibility, error-message, or support path.
Formatting is more disruptive than simply removing the card for a test because it erases the card’s contents. Back up screenshots and videos first, then format only if you are choosing that troubleshooting option. Nintendo’s guidance also allows trying a different card, but it does not name a specific product to buy or promise that a replacement card will resolve a crash.
7. Use settings recovery only for the specified error path
For the specific “software was closed because an error occurred” troubleshooting path, Nintendo includes an advanced option to restore settings while keeping user data, followed by redownloading the software to system memory. Treat this as a later recovery step, after restarting, updating, checking the game’s data, and trying the simpler redownload/storage test.
Follow Nintendo’s on-screen directions exactly if you reach this option. Confirm that you are choosing the restore procedure that keeps user data, not a different reset or deletion option. The available guidance does not make this an all-purpose first-line remedy for every freeze or crash, so do not use it simply because a game has lagged once.

This is not the same as the initial restart, and it is not a routine step to try before checking updates and game data. Use the exact Nintendo instructions for the error path, read each on-screen choice, and stop if you are uncertain which recovery option preserves user data. If your problem is a general freeze without the specified unexpected-close message, continue with the general sequence and contact Nintendo Support if it remains unresolved.

When only one game is affected
A single failing title does not by itself prove that the console is defective. If the title is an original Nintendo Switch game running on Switch 2, Nintendo maintains a compatibility document listing Switch games with issues that prevent startup or progress, along with each listed issue’s handling status. Check the current document for the exact title rather than relying on an old status: entries can change.
In the version checked on October 9, 2026, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Mortal Kombat 1, and Overwatch 2 appeared as under investigation. That status describes the listed title in that version of the document; it does not establish a console-wide defect, and it should not be assumed to remain current.
If the affected title is Switch 2 software, the cited compatibility list for original Switch games is not the applicable reference. Complete the relevant update, data, and storage steps, then consult the game publisher’s support channel if the issue remains isolated to that title.

Use the list as a title-specific check, not as a diagnosis for every problem on the console. A status such as “under investigation” indicates how that entry was handled in the document version you checked; it is not a guarantee that the issue is present on every console or that it will remain listed. Recheck the current document when troubleshooting, because Nintendo may update its entries.
Conversely, if multiple unrelated downloaded Switch 2 games freeze or close, a list about particular original Switch titles is unlikely to answer the broader problem. Start with the system update and the general downloaded-software steps. If only one Switch 2 game continues to fail after those checks, the game publisher is a useful next contact alongside Nintendo Support.

Contact Nintendo Support if the official troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem, or if you cannot safely identify which reset or storage option applies. When you get in touch, have the title, whether it is downloaded or on a game card, the exact error wording or code, and the steps already tried ready to share. If the failure happens with more than one game, say so; if it happens only with a single title, note that too.

If you have already tested system memory without the card, say so; do not repeat disruptive steps simply because you are unsure whether they apply.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I try first if a Nintendo Switch 2 game freezes?
Restart the console from Power Options. If the console is completely unresponsive, hold POWER for 12 seconds to force it off, then turn it on again. Next, install available system and game updates.
What if the screen says the software was closed because an error occurred?
Search Nintendo Support for the exact message and follow its dedicated instructions. Nintendo’s guidance for this error includes removing the microSD Express card and redownloading the affected software to system memory; settings recovery that keeps user data is a later step in that path.
Will redownloading a game delete my save data?
Nintendo says save data is stored in console system memory, while downloaded software can be redownloaded using the Nintendo Account that purchased it. When using software-management menus, do not choose an option that explicitly deletes save data.
Should I buy a new microSD Express card to fix crashes?
Not as a general first fix. If the game is stored on a card, test it in system memory first. Nintendo also suggests trying another compatible card when card storage may be involved, but its guidance does not specify a brand, capacity, or model.
What should I do before formatting a microSD Express card?
Remember that formatting erases the card. Back up screenshots and videos stored on it first, and try the less disruptive system-memory test before formatting if practical.
Do these steps apply to games played from a game card or original Switch games?
The general troubleshooting sequence described here is for downloaded Nintendo Switch 2 software, including Switch 2 Edition games. Game-card issues and original Nintendo Switch games running on Switch 2 have separate guidance; use the instructions that match the game and format.
Why does only one game keep crashing?
A single failing title does not prove the console is defective. Check updates and game data, and if it is an original Switch game running on Switch 2, check Nintendo’s current compatibility document. For Switch 2 software, consult the game publisher if the issue remains isolated to that title.
The Bottom Line
For a downloaded Nintendo Switch 2 game, work from least disruptive to more involved: restart, update the console, update the game, scan its data, then redownload it if needed. If the game is on a microSD Express card, test system memory before considering card formatting or replacement. Follow Nintendo’s dedicated instructions for a specific error message, use separate guidance for original Switch or game-card titles, and contact Nintendo Support if the problem remains.
