If a Nintendo Switch 2 eShop purchase or download seems stuck, first check the HOME Menu, then confirm which Nintendo Account made the purchase and whether its Virtual Game Card is set. For a rejected download code, use the exact error number to choose the right fix; for payment trouble, verify the selected account, item, price, and balance. Nintendo’s published payment options vary by region, so do not assume a method listed for Japan is available everywhere.
Start with the HOME Menu and the account that made the purchase
Before retrying a purchase, entering a code again, or assuming the content is lost, check whether it has already been added to the console. Nintendo says a completed purchase starts downloading and directs users to check its progress from the HOME Menu. Nintendo’s purchase instructions describe that status check.

This is the best first step because it can distinguish an entitlement or redemption problem from a download that is already in progress. It can also help prevent an unnecessary second purchase. If the software icon is visible with progress, the transaction has advanced beyond checkout; if neither the icon nor progress is visible, continue through the account and Virtual Game Card checks rather than assuming the payment failed.
Check for an icon or download progress
- Return to the HOME Menu after the purchase or code redemption.
- Look for the software icon and any download-progress indicator. If the download is underway, let it finish rather than buying the item or redeeming the code again.
- If no icon or progress appears, check the user account and Virtual Game Card steps below.
Keep the distinction between “purchase completed” and “download finished” in mind. A completed order should start a download, but Nintendo notes that the time required depends on the internet connection and the amount of data. A download that has not visibly finished does not, on its own, show that the purchase needs to be repeated.

Check the purchasing or redeeming user
Digital software, passes, and eShop funds are associated with the Nintendo Account selected for the purchase or redemption. Nintendo says transfers to another account are not possible. If several users are set up on the console, check which one was selected when the transaction or code redemption took place; looking only at another user’s account can make valid content appear to be missing. See Nintendo’s download-code guidance and purchase instructions.
In practical terms, repeat the check in the context of the user who actually bought or redeemed the content. Do not assume that another person’s user profile can see or claim the purchase simply because it is on the same console. If you are unsure which account was active, compare the likely accounts’ purchase or redemption details before trying to buy the item again. Nintendo’s rules do not provide a transfer route if the wrong account was used.
Check the relevant Virtual Game Card
A redeemed code may already have started a download. If there is no software icon, Nintendo says setting the relevant Virtual Game Card can start it. Check the Virtual Game Card associated with the account that redeemed the code or purchased the software; a different user’s card will not establish that account’s entitlement. Nintendo also uses this check for redownloading previously obtained software. Code troubleshooting and redownload guidance explain these cases.

It is not a substitute for checking the owner account: first identify which account holds the purchase, then check that account’s Virtual Game Card. If another user redeemed the code, setting a different user’s card will not move the entitlement.
Fix a rejected Nintendo Switch 2 download code
Read the full error code before trying again. The codes below point to different problems, so repeatedly re-entering the same code is unlikely to help if the issue is already-used content, an unsupported entry, release timing, or account region.
When reviewing an error, separate three questions: whether the entry is supported and correct, whether the content is available yet, and whether the code has already been used. The exact number guides the next check. For regional restrictions, the code’s market and the country/region registered to the Nintendo Account may matter; do not treat a restriction documented for a Japan-market code as a rule for every market.
| Error shown | What it indicates | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| 2813-0040 or 9001-0040 | The code has already been redeemed. | Check the HOME Menu for a download or software icon. Then check other console users and the Virtual Game Card section for the account that redeemed it. |
| 2813-6561 or 9001-6561 | The entered code is incorrect or is not a supported code. | Compare the entry with the code you received and confirm it is a code type Nintendo supports for redemption. |
| 2813-0055 or 9001-0055 | The content may not yet be available for release. | Check the content’s release timing before attempting redemption again. |
Nintendo’s download-code support page maps these codes to the situations above. It also notes a country/region restriction for Japan-market codes: a Nintendo Account whose country/region is not Japan cannot redeem such a code. That specific restriction should not be generalized to every code or market; check the terms for the code and the Nintendo Account’s region.

If an already-redeemed code still appears missing
Do not assume that “already redeemed” means the code failed. It can mean the entitlement is attached to an account on the console already. Check each user’s account context, the HOME Menu, and the relevant Virtual Game Card before seeking another code or paying again. If the code was redeemed under a different Nintendo Account, the entitlement does not transfer to the account you intended to use.
A sensible order is to look for the resulting software on the HOME Menu, identify the user who entered the code, and then check that user’s Virtual Game Card. If the code was used by another console user, follow the same checks for that user rather than re-entering the code under your own account. An “already redeemed” message alone does not tell you that the code is lost; it tells you to look for the existing redemption.
If the code is incorrect, unsupported, or not released
For 2813-6561 or 9001-6561, compare the code you entered with the one supplied to you and make sure the code type is accepted for the content you are trying to redeem. For 2813-0055 or 9001-0055, check the listed release timing: the content may not be available to redeem yet. If it is a Japan-market code, check that the Nintendo Account country/region is Japan. These checks address different causes, so use the displayed error instead of treating every rejection as a typing mistake.
Fix missing add-on content or an in-game reward
First distinguish downloadable add-on software from an item that is delivered inside a game. They may not appear in the same place, even when redemption succeeded.
Close and relaunch the game for add-on installation
If the game was suspended while you purchased or downloaded add-on content, close the software completely and launch it again. Nintendo’s Japan-market Switch 2 purchase guidance says suspended software does not install the add-on; restarting the game gives the installation another opportunity to complete. Nintendo’s purchase and add-on instructions cover this case.
Simply returning to the HOME Menu while leaving the game suspended is not the same as closing it. For this specific symptom, fully close the game, then start it again. After it relaunches, check the game for the add-on. This is a focused step for add-on installation, not a general fix for every eShop download problem.

Look inside the game for redeemed items
An in-game item or reward may need to be claimed within the game and may not create a separate HOME Menu icon. After confirming the code was redeemed by the correct account, open the relevant game and check its own menus or item-claim process. Do not treat the absence of a standalone icon as proof that an in-game reward was not delivered. Nintendo’s code guidance distinguishes this type of content.
Use the content’s description to decide where to look: downloadable add-on software is associated with installing content, while an in-game reward may be claimed through the game itself. If you are dealing with a reward, first verify the redemption account and then follow the game’s claim process rather than expecting a new software icon on the HOME Menu.

For a purchase that will not complete, verify the selected user and Nintendo Account, the item being purchased, its displayed price, and the account balance. These checks can catch a mismatch between the account you meant to use and the one active at checkout, or an insufficient balance. Nintendo’s Japan purchase guide documents checking the purchase and adding funds.
Work through the checkout details before changing payment methods: confirm the selected account, make sure the intended software or add-on is the item on screen, compare its displayed price with the balance, and then consider how to add funds if needed. This does not diagnose every possible decline, but it rules out the account, item, and balance issues covered by Nintendo’s guidance.
Payment methods are not universal. Nintendo’s Japan instructions list credit card, prepaid card, and PayPal as ways to add funds, and say PayPal is unavailable to accounts aged 17 or younger. Those are Japan-specific details, not a complete payment-method list for every country. Check Nintendo support for the country/region set on the purchasing account before selecting a payment method or buying a prepaid card.
In particular, do not assume that PayPal is an option for every account, or that an option described for Japan is supported where you live. The account’s country/region is the relevant starting point for checking locally available payment guidance. A country/region mismatch can also matter for some codes, though the documented Japan-market restriction should be applied only to those codes.

If using a prepaid card, use one intended for the Nintendo Account’s region and supported there. Nintendo’s sources support prepaid cards as a balance top-up route in Japan and identify eShop card codes among redeemable code types; a card does not resolve a download, account-ownership, or Virtual Game Card problem. Japan purchase guidance and code guidance describe those limited uses.
A prepaid card is therefore an option only when the region and account support that card and the issue is adding balance. It will not make an already-owned title appear, transfer a purchase between Nintendo Accounts, or fix an installation that has not started. Check those account and download branches first so that adding funds does not become a costly detour.
What to do when a download is slow or does not appear to move
Nintendo says Switch 2 downloads require an internet connection and may take longer depending on the connection and the amount of data. That means a large download or a slower connection can take time, but Nintendo’s cited guidance does not establish a universal speed threshold or identify a particular router setting as a proven fix. Nintendo’s connection and download guidance gives the scope of that advice.
- Check the HOME Menu for the software icon and progress indicator before restarting the transaction.
- If the purchase completed but no download is visible, verify the purchasing account and the corresponding Virtual Game Card.
- If the download has not started, use the connection requirement and file-size caveat as context; do not infer a specific network fault from the available guidance alone.
The cited Nintendo guidance does not establish DNS changes, a particular speed test result, new networking equipment, extra storage hardware, or a replacement console as a general fix for these eShop symptoms. Avoid spending money on hardware before confirming the account, entitlement, and download status.
For a slow download, the supported guidance is deliberately limited: the console needs an internet connection, and both connection conditions and data size can affect how long the transfer takes. There is no universal time or speed figure here that can distinguish a normal wait from a fault. For an absent download, return to the more concrete checks—purchase status on the HOME Menu, the correct Nintendo Account, and that account’s Virtual Game Card—rather than applying a router or hardware remedy without evidence.
Redownload software that was deleted or is missing
For software you previously downloaded, begin with the Nintendo Account that originally purchased it and that account’s Virtual Game Card. Nintendo’s purchase-history and redownload guidance explains that setting the relevant Virtual Game Card is part of redownloading.
Redownload may not be available if the original Nintendo Account is no longer linked to the user or if Nintendo has ended distribution for redownload. Those are limits on whether the title can be restored through this route, not signs that another user’s account can inherit the purchase. The cited page is Nintendo Japan guidance; availability may depend on the account and title.

Try to restore the title through the original owner account, not a different user who happens to use the same console. If it is not available to redownload, check whether the account is still linked and keep distribution availability in mind. These limitations are different from a temporary download delay: if Nintendo no longer offers redownload for the title, changing accounts or adding funds does not make that redownload route available.
Use purchase history to verify a transaction
If you are unsure whether an order completed, check purchase history for the Nintendo Account used at checkout. Nintendo Japan’s purchase-history instructions state that web records cover the previous two years. This is a Japan-specific statement about the records described on that page, not a guarantee about the history view in every account region.
Purchase history can help answer whether you are troubleshooting a completed transaction or a checkout that did not finish. Be sure to check the account used at the time; looking under a different Nintendo Account may not show the order. The two-year web-record detail applies to the Japan instructions cited above, so consult the purchase-history information for the account’s actual region rather than assuming the same period worldwide.
Choose the fix by symptom
| Symptom | First check | Next useful action |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase completed but download is absent | HOME Menu icon or progress | Confirm the purchasing account and set its relevant Virtual Game Card. |
| Code rejected as already used | Exact error and HOME Menu | Check the redeeming account, other users, and its Virtual Game Card. |
| Code rejected as invalid or unavailable | Exact error number | Verify code entry and type, release timing, and any applicable account-region restriction. |
| DLC or an in-game reward is missing | Whether the game was suspended and what content the code provides | Close and relaunch for add-on installation; claim in-game items within the game. |
| Payment will not complete | Selected account, item, price, balance, and account region | Use payment guidance for that region rather than assuming Japan’s options apply. |
| Previously downloaded software is missing | Original purchasing account | Check its Virtual Game Card and whether redownload remains available. |
These branches avoid treating every eShop symptom as a payment or internet problem. A completed purchase with an absent icon calls for account and Virtual Game Card checks; an already-used code calls for finding the existing redemption; and missing add-on content calls for a full game relaunch or an in-game claim, depending on the content. For payment, confirm the transaction details and use regional guidance. For slow transfers, keep the connection and data-size caveat in view without assuming a particular hardware fix.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I check first if a Nintendo Switch 2 eShop download is not starting?
Check the HOME Menu for the software icon and download progress. If nothing appears, confirm which Nintendo Account made the purchase or redeemed the code, then check that account’s Virtual Game Card.
What does error 2813-0040 or 9001-0040 mean?
Nintendo maps these errors to a code that has already been redeemed. Check the HOME Menu, the account that redeemed it, other console users, and the relevant Virtual Game Card before trying to obtain another code.
Why does a redeemed code not show a new game icon?
A redeemed code may have started a download that is visible from the HOME Menu, or setting the relevant Virtual Game Card may be needed to start it. An in-game reward may need to be claimed inside the game and may not have a separate HOME Menu icon.
Why is my Switch 2 add-on missing after purchase?
If the game was suspended during the purchase or download, close it completely and launch it again; Nintendo’s Japan Switch 2 guidance says suspended software does not install the add-on. For a reward delivered inside a game, check the game’s own claim process.
Can I move an eShop purchase or redeemed code to another Nintendo Account?
No. Nintendo says software, passes, and eShop funds are associated with the selected Nintendo Account and cannot be transferred to another account. Check the account that made the purchase or redeemed the code.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhich payment methods can I use for Nintendo Switch 2 eShop purchases?
Available methods depend on the Nintendo Account’s country/region. Nintendo Japan lists credit card, prepaid card, and PayPal for adding funds, and says PayPal is unavailable to accounts aged 17 or younger; those details are Japan-specific, not a universal list.
How do I redownload a deleted Switch 2 game?
Use the Nintendo Account that originally purchased it and check that account’s Virtual Game Card. Nintendo Japan says redownload may be unavailable if the original account is no longer linked to the user or Nintendo has ended distribution for redownload.
How long should a Switch 2 eShop download take?
Nintendo says download time can vary with the internet connection and the amount of data, but the cited guidance gives no universal speed threshold or time estimate. Check HOME Menu progress and confirm the account and Virtual Game Card if the download does not appear.
The Bottom Line
Start with the HOME Menu, then confirm the Nintendo Account that bought or redeemed the content and check its Virtual Game Card. Match code errors to the specific issue, fully close and relaunch a suspended game for add-on installation, and use payment instructions for the account’s region. Nintendo’s cited guidance does not support buying new hardware as a general eShop fix.
