Most Nintendo Switch 2 problems with downloads, Joy-Con 2 pairing, or starting games can be isolated to one of six layers: the internet connection, running software, system or game data, microSD Express storage, controller hardware, or licensing and title compatibility. Work through the matching procedure below rather than repeatedly restarting at random.
Start with the least destructive checks. Do not format a card or delete a game until you have confirmed updates, tested system memory, and backed up screenshots and videos. Nintendo’s firmware, error-code handling, regional support steps, and title compatibility can change, so verify the exact error message in Nintendo Support before using a destructive remedy.
Find the failure layer first
The same symptom can have different causes. A download that appears frozen may simply be paused while a game is running; a game that will not launch may be waiting for an online license rather than suffering corrupt data. Use this triage table to choose the shortest path.
| What you see | Most likely layer | First useful check |
|---|---|---|
| Download stays at the same percentage or says paused | Network or software activity | Close the running game, then open User Settings > Update Download Progress. |
| Download or launch fails after adding a card | Storage compatibility or card failure | Confirm the card is microSD Express; retry in system memory with the card removed. |
| Joy-Con 2 will not connect or repeatedly drops out | Controller pairing or hardware | Run Nintendo’s Joy-Con Pairing Issues procedure and test with the console undocked. |
| A downloaded game freezes or reports that it cannot start | Updates, corrupt data, storage, or title compatibility | Update the console and game, check for corrupt data, then redownload to system memory. |
| “Unable to connect to the Internet. Please check your settings.” appears at launch | Online-license check | Load the game’s virtual game card on that console or provide an active internet connection. |
| A purchased game or DLC icon is missing | Account, virtual game card, or download state | Connect to the internet, verify the purchasing Nintendo Account, and load or redownload the title. |
| A physical-card title has a startup problem | Title-specific compatibility | Check Nintendo’s Switch-game compatibility PDF dated 2025-05-27. |
Fix a Switch 2 download that is stuck, paused, or slow
1. Confirm that the console is online
A download cannot advance without an active connection. If the progress indicator has not moved, first confirm that the console still shows your wireless network and that other devices can reach the internet. A slow connection is different from a paused download, so use the console’s connection test when the transfer speed is poor.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Close the game that is currently running
Some software pauses downloads while you play. Save and close the game, return to the HOME Menu, and watch the download again. This is often the only change needed when a transfer appears frozen immediately after you launch another title.
3. Refresh the download queue
- Open the user page from the HOME Menu.
- Choose User Settings > Update Download Progress.
- Let the console refresh the item and check whether the percentage or remaining time changes.
If the queue still does not move after the refresh, restart the console and check the download again. A restart clears a temporary queue or network state without deleting the game.
4. Test a slow wireless connection
For a redownload or any transfer that crawls, place Switch 2 within 10 feet of the wireless router. Open System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings, select your network’s SSID, enter its password, and complete the connection test. The test confirms whether the console can reach the internet using the saved settings.

5. Update the console and the affected software
Pending system or game updates can leave a download or launch attempt in an inconsistent state. Install all offered updates, restart if requested, and retry the download before deleting anything. If the problem returns only for one title, record that title and its exact error for the later compatibility check.

Check storage before deleting a game
Only microSD Express cards are supported
Nintendo states: “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” A regular microSD card, even one that works in an earlier Switch model, is not a supported substitute. An incompatible or failing card can block both downloads and game launches.
Isolate the card from the problem
- Install any pending system update.
- Power down and remove the microSD Express card according to Nintendo’s handling instructions.
- Start Switch 2 without the card and retry the download or launch using system memory.
- If the title works in system memory, treat the card, its data, or its compatibility as the likely failure layer.
Downloading directly to system memory is a diagnostic step as well as a workaround. It does not prove that every card error is hardware failure; a damaged file on an otherwise compatible card can produce a similar symptom.
Format or replace the card only when instructed
Nintendo’s storage-error procedure may call for formatting or replacing the card. Formatting permanently erases data stored on it, including screenshots and videos. Back those files up before formatting, and recheck the exact error-code article because the required procedure can vary by firmware and region.
If a card continues to produce errors after the console is updated and the Nintendo procedure is followed, leave it removed and use system memory while you arrange support. Repeatedly formatting a failing card can destroy evidence useful for diagnosis and will not repair physical wear.
Repair Joy-Con 2 pairing and disconnects
When a controller will not pair
Use Nintendo’s dedicated Joy-Con Pairing Issues procedure for the initial pairing failure. Follow the on-screen pairing sequence exactly, then test the controller again from the HOME Menu. Avoid assuming that a download or game-launch fault is caused by the controller until the controller fails independently of that software.

Test with the console undocked
Remove Switch 2 from its dock and repeat the controller test. Nintendo specifically recommends an undocked test because it separates a controller connection problem from a dock, placement, or interference condition. Note whether the Joy-Con 2 works while attached to the console, while detached, and when the console is away from the dock.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen the connection repeatedly drops
If Joy-Con 2 connects and disconnects over and over, use Nintendo’s separate repeated-connect/disconnect workflow rather than repeating the initial pairing steps indefinitely. Perform that workflow with the console undocked, then compare behavior with each controller individually if you have more than one.
Know when to stop troubleshooting
If the pairing procedure and undocked test do not restore a stable connection, escalate through Nintendo Support. Provide the console model, the affected Joy-Con 2, whether the fault occurs attached and detached, and the exact sequence that reproduces it. Those details help support distinguish a pairing-state problem from controller hardware that needs service.
Fix a downloaded game that freezes or will not start
Install both kinds of updates
Update the Switch 2 system and then update the affected game. A title can fail even when the console itself is current if the game update is missing, and the reverse is also possible. Retry the title after each update so you know which change affected the result.
Check for corrupt data
Use the console’s corrupt-data check for the affected software. If the check reports a problem, follow the prompt to remove the damaged data and redownload the title. A corrupt installation can present as a freeze, an immediate return to the HOME Menu, or an “unable to start software” message.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Redownload to system memory
- Close the game and confirm that its save data is safe before removing the software.
- Delete the affected downloaded title when Nintendo’s procedure calls for it.
- Remove the microSD Express card, or select system memory as the destination if the console offers that choice.
- Redownload the title and install its updates.
- Launch it before restoring the card or moving the installation back.
If the game starts from system memory but not from the card, continue treating the storage path as the fault. If it fails identically in system memory, check licensing and title-specific compatibility before blaming the console.
Understand virtual game cards and online licenses
Why an internet message can appear for an otherwise downloaded game
Nintendo documents the message “Unable to connect to the Internet. Please check your settings.” for software launches that require an online-license check. This can happen when the title’s virtual game card is not loaded on that console. The game files may be present locally, but the console still needs to verify the right to play them.
Load the virtual game card for offline play
Load the title’s virtual game card on the Switch 2 you intend to use. When the virtual game card is loaded, the title can be available for offline play according to Nintendo’s licensing rules. If the card is not loaded, provide an active internet connection when the console checks the license.
Interpret “Checking if the software can be played…”
The message “Checking if the software can be played…” likewise indicates online-license behavior when the virtual game card is not loaded. It is not, by itself, evidence that the download is corrupt. Complete the license check or load the virtual game card, then test the title again.

Recover a purchased game or DLC that is missing
- Connect Switch 2 to the internet.
- Confirm that the active Nintendo Account is the account that purchased the game or DLC.
- Load the title’s virtual game card, or open Nintendo eShop and choose Download for the purchase.
- Wait for the icon to appear on the HOME Menu and allow the download to finish.
- Restart the console if the icon still does not appear, then check the account and virtual game card again.
A purchase can be valid while its icon is absent because the title has not been downloaded to this console or its virtual game card is loaded elsewhere. Checking the purchasing account before deleting data prevents an unnecessary redownload under the wrong account.

Check physical game cards and title-specific compatibility
Physical cards can still require downloaded data
Some software associated with a physical game card uses downloaded data. Nintendo’s support guidance says that this associated software may need to be deleted and redownloaded when it will not start. Apply the update, corrupt-data, and system-memory checks first so you do not mistake a damaged download for a defective physical card.
Use Nintendo’s compatibility list before declaring the console faulty
Nintendo publishes a compatibility PDF listing Switch games with startup issues on Switch 2. The list includes each affected title’s publisher and the current handling status. It was published on 2025-05-27, so use the current Nintendo document for changes after that date. A title on the list can have a known startup problem even when other games run normally.
Record the exact game edition, whether you are using a physical card or a download, and the displayed message before consulting the list. Compatibility can be title-specific; a successful launch of one game does not clear every other game, and one failing title does not establish a console-wide defect.

- Software data: Check for corrupt data and redownload only after the previous checks.
- Licensing: For internet or “checking” messages, load the virtual game card or complete the online check.
- Compatibility: Consult Nintendo’s Switch 2 startup-issues list for the exact title and edition.
- Hardware: For Joy-Con 2 faults, run the pairing procedure and test undocked; escalate if the failure remains.
This order preserves screenshots, videos, saves, and download data as long as possible while testing one failure layer at a time.
When to contact Nintendo Support or request repair
Escalate when Nintendo’s documented steps do not resolve the problem, when a compatible microSD Express card fails after the system-memory test, or when Joy-Con 2 remains unreliable after pairing and undocked checks. Include the exact error text, title and edition, download or physical-card status, whether the card was removed, update results, and the date you tested. Nintendo’s support or repair team can then apply the current region-specific procedure instead of having you repeat generic resets.
Do not format storage or repeatedly delete software while waiting for support unless Nintendo instructs you to do so. Firmware, error-code handling, compatibility entries, and regional service procedures may change; the exact Nintendo article for your error takes priority over a general checklist.
