The right fix depends on the exact error code, what you were doing, your console model, and your account region. Find the code shown on screen, then follow the matching Nintendo Support instructions; a fix for a stalled download may not resolve a rejected purchase or code redemption. The steps below help you identify which problem you have and what to check next.
Start with the error code and the action that failed
Write down the complete error code and message before trying changes. Then note whether the failure happened while opening the eShop, buying something, redeeming a download or prepaid code, starting a download, or redownloading a purchase. Search Nintendo Support for that exact code and select the instructions for your console and region. Similar-looking symptoms can have different causes, so do not apply a remedy for a different code.
- Record the context: note whether the content is a game, add-on, update, or code redemption, and whether the download is new or a redownload.
- Check the console and account region: Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 support results may have different procedures. Region-specific support rules should not be treated as universal.
- Keep the code visible: if you contact Nintendo, provide the exact code and message along with the action that triggered it.
These details help separate five problems that can look alike at first: the eShop will not connect, a payment is rejected, a code will not redeem, a download is not progressing, or content from a completed purchase is not where you expect. Also note whether the problem is consistent or happened once, and whether the console was online when it occurred. That context can guide your search, but the displayed code and its matching support instructions should take priority over a guess based on the symptom alone.
| What happened | First branch to investigate |
|---|---|
| eShop will not open or cannot communicate with a server | Check service status, then follow the instructions for the displayed communication error. |
| A purchase is rejected | Check the exact payment error and whether the Nintendo Account has purchase restrictions. |
| A download or prepaid code is rejected | Check the code-specific guidance, product, and region requirements. |
| A download has not started or appears stuck | Check connection, whether software is running, download progress, and available storage. |
| Payment appears complete, but the game or add-on is missing | Verify the purchasing account and purchase record before considering another purchase. |
Keep the distinction between an error while redeeming a code and an error after redemption. If the code itself is rejected, follow the code’s exact guidance. If it was accepted but the content is not downloading, troubleshoot the download separately. Likewise, a completed transaction with missing content is an account and redownload question, not necessarily a new payment failure.

Check whether Nintendo eShop service is unavailable
A server-side interruption can look like a local connection or redemption problem. Check Nintendo’s network status information when the error occurs; status can change, so an old report does not establish whether service is available now.
If you see error 2813-9200 during download-code redemption
Nintendo identifies error 2813-9200 during download-code redemption with ongoing eShop server maintenance. Check the network status notice and try redeeming again after maintenance ends. If no maintenance notice is posted but the communication error persists, follow the code-specific Nintendo guidance, wait, and retry rather than assuming the code is invalid.
This advice is specific to the reported code and situation: error 2813-9200 during download-code redemption. Do not use it to explain an unrelated purchase decline, a stalled download, or a different code. If the code continues to appear after service is available, return to the matching support page for the next steps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the status page shows no maintenance
Continue with the error’s own support instructions. A clean status report does not rule out an account, local network, storage, or payment issue, and repeated retries will not resolve every type of failure.
Use the live status information rather than relying on an old report or a previous successful connection. If maintenance is listed, waiting until it ends is a more useful next step than repeatedly changing console settings. If no interruption is listed, investigate the console-side or account-side branch that matches what you were doing.
Fix a failed eShop connection or download communication error
For a communication failure, first use the instructions for the exact code. Nintendo’s guidance for error 2137-8056 includes reviewing service status, improving Wi-Fi conditions, testing connection changes, and contacting Nintendo Support if the problem remains unresolved. A network adjustment is a test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Review service status. If Nintendo reports maintenance or an interruption, wait for service to return before judging the console’s connection.
- Check the local connection. Confirm that the console has internet access and that its Wi-Fi signal is usable where it is being used. Improve the connection conditions if needed.
- Change one network or console setting at a time. After each change, test the connection again so you can tell whether that change helped.
- Follow the code-specific instructions. Do not assume that a connection error means the same thing as a payment decline or a rejected code.
- Escalate if unresolved. If the official steps do not resolve error 2137-8056, contact Nintendo Support with the code and the changes you tested.
Nintendo Support states: “Test your connection after any changes are made to the console or network environment to determine if the change resolves your issue.” This is useful because changing several things at once makes it harder to identify what affected the result.

Resume a paused or stuck download
A download that has stopped progressing is not necessarily a failed purchase. Nintendo notes that some software pauses downloads while it is being played. Close the running software first, then check the console’s download progress and connection.
- Close the software currently running. If a game or other software is open, close it and allow the console to return to its HOME menu.
- Confirm internet access. If the console cannot connect, use the communication-error path and the exact code shown rather than treating the pause as a storage problem.
- Refresh the download status. Open User Settings and select Update Download Progress.
- Restart the console if needed. If the download still does not resume after checking progress, restart the console and check again.
Download duration varies with the internet environment. A slow connection can make progress appear limited, while a paused download, unavailable service, or insufficient storage requires a different response.
Do not judge a download only by how quickly the progress indicator moves. The connection environment affects duration, and playing some software can pause the download altogether. Close the software and refresh progress before deciding that a download has failed. If there is an error code, use it to determine whether the next step is a connection check, a storage check, or another code-specific action.
If a code was accepted or a purchase completed before the download stopped, you do not need to treat the stalled progress as proof that the purchase failed. Check the download and purchase status separately. If the content is absent after the download steps, verify the account and use the current redownload route for your region and model.
Check whether there is enough storage space
Nintendo says downloads need sufficient free space in either system memory or a microSD card. Updates may require additional capacity, so a console with room for the original game may still lack space for an update. Check the available space on the storage location being used before trying the download again.
- If space is insufficient, clear space on the console or use a compatible microSD card for your Switch model.
- Do not buy a card just because a download is failing: storage is relevant only when available space is inadequate. A card will not resolve server, payment, account, code-region, or network errors.
- Check compatibility for the specific console model before buying a card. Nintendo’s cited storage guidance does not establish a particular brand, capacity, or supported maximum.
Storage is worth checking when a download will not begin or an update cannot complete, but do not assume every stalled download is a storage shortage. First identify the message and confirm the connection and download state. If the console has enough space, move back to the troubleshooting branch indicated by the error instead of buying extra storage as a general-purpose fix.
If you are considering a microSD card, treat it as a conditional option rather than a required purchase. Clear existing space first if that is practical, and verify compatibility for your particular console model before choosing a card. The storage check applies only to insufficient free space; it cannot fix an unavailable eShop, a rejected transaction, a region mismatch, or an account restriction.

Find a purchase that appears to be missing
Before buying the same content again, confirm which Nintendo Account made the purchase. Nintendo purchases are account-managed, so a game bought under another account may not appear where you expect when using a different one.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
- Check the purchase email or Nintendo Account purchase history. Confirm that the transaction completed and identify the account associated with it.
- Check the account currently being used. Make sure the console and the purchase record correspond to the same Nintendo Account.
- Use the current redownload route for your region and model. Nintendo’s Japanese support guidance says purchased games and add-ons are redownloaded from Virtual Game Cards rather than the eShop beginning April 30, 2025. This is regional guidance; confirm the applicable route in Nintendo Support for your account country and console.
- Contact Nintendo if the record and content do not match. Provide the account and purchase details through the official support channel rather than paying a second time to test whether the first transaction worked.
A missing item can mean the transaction was not completed, that you are looking at a different account, or that you need to use the current redownload process. The purchase email or account history helps establish whether there is a completed purchase to locate. Check that record before attempting to buy again, especially if the payment appears to have gone through.
The Virtual Game Cards instruction above comes from Nintendo’s Japanese support guidance and applies beginning April 30, 2025. It should not be assumed to describe every region or console flow. If the steps you see differ, use Nintendo Support for your account country and model rather than forcing a route intended for a different region.
Troubleshoot a rejected purchase or payment
First distinguish a purchase rejection from a download problem. If payment was not accepted, restarting a download will not address the cause. Read the complete payment error and follow Nintendo’s support instructions for your region and payment method.

Check for account purchase restrictions
Nintendo’s Japan support information says account purchase restrictions can block paid products and some additions of funds. If you use a Japanese account and a paid purchase or fund addition is blocked, check the account’s purchase restrictions as well as the error guidance. This regional rule should not be assumed to describe accounts in other countries.
Consider whether the error occurred when trying to buy paid content or add funds, and check whether the account has restrictions that apply to that action. An account restriction is different from a download problem: freeing storage or refreshing download progress will not address a blocked purchase.
Do not guess why a payment was declined
Payment declines depend on region and payment provider. The eShop error alone may not establish whether the cause is a provider refusal, an account restriction, or another issue. Check the exact message and the provider’s relevant transaction information; if the reason remains unclear, ask Nintendo or the payment provider rather than repeatedly submitting the same payment.
A rejected purchase does not, by itself, establish that a bank or payment provider refused the transaction. Do not assume the reason without evidence. Keep the transaction details and exact error available when contacting the relevant support channel, and avoid treating repeated attempts as a diagnostic test that will identify the cause.

Resolve a rejected download or prepaid code
For a code that will not redeem, verify that you are following the correct instructions for the code type and product, then check the exact error. A server-maintenance message, a region mismatch, and an invalid or otherwise unusable code are not interchangeable problems.

Start by confirming what the code is meant to provide and whether you are entering it in the correct redemption flow described by Nintendo. Keep the code’s displayed result and error text in view. If the message points to maintenance, use the service-status steps; if it points to a region issue, check the account country and the local code rules. Do not infer that a code is invalid simply because redemption temporarily cannot communicate with the server.
Check the region rule that applies to the account
Nintendo’s Japan-specific support page says some codes issued in Japan may require the Nintendo Account country or region to be Japan. This is not a rule to generalize to every code or region. If your account is outside Japan, or the code was issued elsewhere, consult the local Nintendo Support instructions for that code and account region.
Region is a relevant check, not a universal explanation. The Japan-specific guidance concerns some Japan-issued codes and a Japan account-country requirement. For codes issued elsewhere, follow the support page for the relevant region and do not change account details based on a rule that may not apply to your code.

If the code was accepted but the content does not download, move to the download checks: connection, software that may be pausing progress, download status, and free storage. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to contact Nintendo Support
Use Nintendo’s official support channel for the console and account region when the exact-code instructions do not resolve the issue, or when the purchase record conflicts with what is available on the console. Have the following information ready:
- The full error code and message, copied exactly.
- Whether the issue occurred while opening eShop, purchasing, redeeming a code, downloading, or redownloading.
- Your console model and the Nintendo Account country or region.
- Whether service status showed maintenance or an interruption at the time.
- For a missing purchase, the purchase-history or confirmation details; for a payment issue, the exact payment error.
- For a connection issue, the changes you tested and whether each changed the result.
A code, model, region, and symptom together help select the right official instructions. Without those details, there is no reliable way to identify a single cause or universal fix.
Use the support instructions that match the actual failure rather than trying remedies from unrelated error pages. For example, a maintenance-related redemption error, a 2137-8056 connection problem, a purchase restriction, and a stalled download each call for a different first check. If the applicable instructions do not resolve the issue, provide Nintendo Support with the details above and summarize the steps already tested.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do first when Nintendo eShop shows an error?
Write down the exact error code and message, and note what you were doing when it appeared: opening eShop, purchasing, redeeming a code, downloading, or redownloading. Search Nintendo Support for that exact code and select instructions for your console model and account region. Do not substitute a fix for a different code.

Why is my Nintendo Switch eShop download stuck or not progressing?
Some software pauses downloads while it is being played. Close the running software, confirm that the console has internet access, open User Settings and choose Update Download Progress, and restart the console if needed. Also check service status and available storage if the download still does not move.
What does error 2813-9200 mean when redeeming a download code?
Nintendo identifies error 2813-9200 during download-code redemption with ongoing eShop server maintenance. Check Nintendo’s network status information and try again after maintenance ends. If no maintenance is listed and the communication error remains, follow the exact code-specific support guidance, wait, and retry.
Will a microSD card fix every eShop download problem?
No. A compatible microSD card is relevant only if there is not enough free storage in system memory or on the card already in use. Updates may need extra capacity, but a card will not resolve a server, network, payment, account, or code-region problem. Check compatibility for your console model before buying.
I paid for a game, but it is missing. Should I buy it again?
First check the purchase email or Nintendo Account purchase history and confirm which account made the purchase. Purchases are account-managed, so make sure you are using the account associated with the transaction. Then follow the current redownload route for your region and console; contact Nintendo if the record and available content do not match.
Where do I redownload a purchased game or add-on?
Nintendo’s Japanese support guidance says purchased games and add-ons are redownloaded from Virtual Game Cards rather than the eShop beginning April 30, 2025. Because this is regional guidance, confirm the applicable process through Nintendo Support for your account country and console model.
Why was my eShop purchase rejected?
The displayed error and applicable rules depend on region and payment provider. Check the exact payment message and the matching Nintendo Support instructions. Nintendo’s Japan support information also says account purchase restrictions can block paid products and some fund additions, but that regional guidance should not be applied to every account. Do not assume a payment provider refused a transaction without evidence.
Can a code from another country be redeemed on my account?
It depends on the code and region. Nintendo’s Japan-specific guidance says some codes issued in Japan may require the Nintendo Account country or region to be Japan. That is not a universal rule; check the local Nintendo Support instructions for the code and the account region.
