If Nginx shows 404 Not Found without first displaying a username-and-password prompt, the request usually did not enter the location protected by auth_basic. Most often, a more-specific regular-expression location handled the URL, or Nginx reached the protected location but could not find the requested file beneath its root or alias. A correctly matched protected location normally returns 401 Unauthorized to an unauthenticated request, even when the eventual file is missing.
Use the procedure below: inspect the effective configuration, identify the location that wins for the failing URL, place authentication directives in that block (or at server scope), then test authentication separately from file lookup.
Read the status code as a diagnostic signal
The first request to a protected URL should receive 401 Unauthorized and a WWW-Authenticate challenge. Your browser then displays its login dialog. A 404 before any prompt means that an unprotected location probably handled the request, or that a different content path returned the error. Once valid credentials are accepted, a genuine missing file can correctly produce 404.
| Response sequence | Likely meaning | Next check |
|---|---|---|
404 with no prompt |
The selected location has no active auth_basic, often because a regex location overrode a prefix location. |
Run nginx -T and trace location precedence. |
401 without credentials |
Authentication is active for that URL. | Send valid credentials and inspect the resulting status. |
401, then 404 with valid credentials |
Authentication works; the content path, root, alias, or try_files target is wrong or absent. |
Resolve the filesystem path and check the error log. |
200 without a prompt |
The request is public, or authentication was cancelled in the winning block. | Look for auth_basic off; and for a different matching location. |
Users have reported this symptom in community threads, including a DigitalOcean Community question, an AWS re:Post case, and a Raspberry Pi forum thread. Those reports describe symptoms, not a universal fix; the location and path checks below are what establish the cause on your server.

Why Nginx can bypass your authentication block
Nginx does not apply directives based on the order in which you mentally read a configuration file. It first selects a location. It remembers the longest matching prefix, then checks regular-expression locations in file order; the first matching regex wins. A prefix marked ^~ prevents the regex search. This behavior is described in the Nginx request-processing documentation.
Suppose the configuration protects /dp/ but also contains a PHP regex:
location /dp/ {
auth_basic "Restricted area";
auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
try_files $uri $uri/ =404;
}
location ~ .php$ {
include fastcgi_params;
fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php-fpm.sock;
}
A request for /dp/report.php initially matches the /dp/ prefix, but the ~ .php$ block can win during the regex phase. That block has no authentication directives, so PHP processing occurs without a prompt and may return its own 404. A reported Habr Q&A case describes this pattern for /dp/index.php; treat it as a user report, but it illustrates the precedence problem: Habr Q&A.
Location matching in detail
For a difficult URL, write down the exact URI and evaluate candidates in this order:
- An exact location such as
location = /private/report.phpcan match only that complete path. - Nginx finds the longest ordinary prefix, such as
/private/, and remembers it. - If that prefix uses
^~, Nginx stops and uses it; no regular-expression location is tested. - Otherwise, Nginx tests regex locations (
~is case-sensitive and~*is case-insensitive) in configuration order. The first matching regex replaces the remembered prefix.
Thus, moving a regex block higher or lower can change which authentication directives apply, even though the URL and prefix remain unchanged. A regex that matches a file extension can also catch requests in several unrelated directories. Conversely, adding ^~ can protect a whole subtree but may prevent an intended PHP or image handler from running. Choose it only when bypassing every regex for that prefix is deliberate.
Location blocks are not nested because one is indented inside another. Includes can add regex locations that are not visible in the short server file, which is why the expanded output from nginx -T matters.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Step 1: Dump the configuration Nginx is actually using
Files under /etc/nginx/conf.d, sites-enabled, and included snippets can change the result you expect from the main file. Always inspect the expanded configuration rather than only the file you edited.
- Run
sudo nginx -T. The command prints the complete parsed configuration and included files. - Search the output for the failing path, every
locationdeclaration,auth_basic,auth_basic_user_file,auth_basic off,root,alias, andtry_files. - Record the exact request path, including a trailing slash, extension, and case. A regex such as
~* .php$can match a path that a plain prefix does not handle in the same way. - Check which server block answers the request. A different
listenaddress, port, orserver_namecan make a correct-looking configuration irrelevant.
Do not infer the winning location merely from visual nesting. Nginx locations are not nested by indentation; selection follows the documented prefix and regex rules.

Step 2: Put both authentication directives in the winning location
For a protected endpoint, the block that ultimately serves or proxies the URL should contain both directives:
location /private/ {
auth_basic "Private files";
auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
root /srv/www/site;
try_files $uri $uri/ =404;
}
If a regex location must handle part of that URL, repeat the directives there:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →location ^~ /private/ {
auth_basic "Private files";
auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
root /srv/www/site;
}
location ~ ^/private/.*.php$ {
auth_basic "Private files";
auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
include fastcgi_params;
fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;
fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php-fpm.sock;
}
The ^~ modifier is useful when the entire prefix must win over regex locations. It is not a substitute for checking the configuration: use it only when bypassing all regex handling for that prefix is intended. If PHP, image, or another specialized handler is required inside the prefix, keep the specialized location and duplicate the authentication settings there.
Step 3: Understand inheritance and the off exception
auth_basic and auth_basic_user_file can be set at http, server, or location level. A child location inherits values until it defines its own setting. Defining auth_basic in a child replaces the inherited realm, so define the matching auth_basic_user_file there as well; do not assume the file setting will follow a newly defined realm.
The official ngx_http_auth_basic_module documentation specifies that the special value off cancels an inherited auth_basic directive. A maintainable pattern is to protect the whole virtual host at server scope, then explicitly make only known public locations public:
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.test;
auth_basic "Site access";
auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
location = /healthz {
auth_basic off;
return 200 "okn";
}
location / {
root /srv/www/site;
}
}
There is a reported Nginx Trac issue titled “auth_basic cannot be overwritten from other context” (ticket #2013). The behavior may depend on Nginx version and configuration context. If a location containing auth_basic off still prompts, verify the installed version, inspect nginx -T, and test the exact URL rather than assuming the override took effect. When practical, avoid complicated mixed inheritance: put authentication explicitly in each sensitive location.

Choosing a scope: location versus server
Location-level protection is precise and is useful when only one directory or endpoint is private. Its weakness is maintenance: every regex, exact-match, or proxy location that can serve the same data must repeat both directives. Server-level protection is safer for an internal virtual host because newly added locations inherit the challenge automatically. It requires an explicit auth_basic off; exception for each public endpoint and careful testing of that exception.
Do not put a password file under the document root merely to make the path convenient. The file is read by Nginx on the host and should remain outside directories that can be served as static content. Keep the realm text consistent across blocks so users do not see confusingly different prompts, but remember that the realm does not control matching.

Step 4: Separate authentication from the file-path problem
Use two requests so you can tell whether the failure is access control or content resolution. Replace the host and path with the failing URL:
curl -I http://example.test/private/report.html
curl -I -u alice:'password' http://example.test/private/report.html
For a protected existing resource, the first command should return 401. The second should return 200 or another application response. If the first returns 401 and the authenticated request returns 404, authentication has already succeeded; investigate root, alias, try_files, proxy upstreams, and the actual filesystem. If both requests return 404, the URL is probably handled by an unprotected block or by an upstream that returns 404.
Recommended Free Tools
Use -v when you need to see the response headers, including WWW-Authenticate and redirects:
curl -v http://example.test/private/report.html
Test the final URL after redirects as well as the original URL. A public redirect location can answer first, while the destination has different authentication settings. Use a temporary test account when sharing command output, and avoid posting real passwords or complete authorization headers in tickets or chat.
Step 5: Verify the password file and worker permissions
The password file path is resolved on the Nginx host, not relative to the website’s document root. Confirm the file exists and is readable by the worker account:
sudo ls -l /etc/nginx/.htpasswd
sudo namei -l /etc/nginx/.htpasswd
- On Debian or Ubuntu installations, the worker commonly runs as
www-data. - On RHEL or CentOS installations, it commonly runs as
nginx. - Every parent directory must be traversable by that account, while the file itself should not be publicly downloadable.
If you create or update the file with an htpasswd utility, keep it outside the web root:
sudo htpasswd -c /etc/nginx/.htpasswd alice
Use -c only when creating a new file; using it again replaces the existing file. Add users without -c. A missing or unreadable password file normally produces an authentication error rather than a content 404, but checking it eliminates a separate failure that can obscure testing.
Step 6: Check root, alias, and try_files
After access checks pass, Nginx maps the URI to a file or upstream. With root, Nginx appends the full URI to the root directory. A request for /private/report.html with root /srv/www/site; maps to /srv/www/site/private/report.html.

alias replaces the matching location prefix instead. For example:
location /downloads/ {
alias /srv/files/;
}
Here, /downloads/report.zip maps to /srv/files/report.zip, not /srv/files/downloads/report.zip. A missing or misplaced trailing slash can change the result, so compare the URI-to-path mapping with the directory tree on disk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Directive | Example mapping | Typical mistake |
|---|---|---|
root |
/private/report.html plus /srv/www/site becomes /srv/www/site/private/report.html |
Expecting the location prefix to be removed. |
alias |
/downloads/report.zip plus /srv/files/ becomes /srv/files/report.zip |
Adding downloads again or omitting a needed trailing slash. |
A common directive is:
try_files $uri $uri/ =404;
try_files checks candidate paths and returns 404 when none exists. It does not cause the authentication decision; it runs as part of content handling after the request has entered the selected location and passed access checks. The Nginx core module documentation describes the directive. Verify the file beneath the effective root, including capitalization, URL decoding, and directory permissions. If the request is proxied, inspect the upstream application instead of looking only for a local file.
Step 7: Validate, reload, and read the error log
- Run
sudo nginx -t. Do not reload if syntax or file checks fail. - Reload after a successful test with
sudo systemctl reload nginx(or the service manager used by your distribution). - Repeat the unauthenticated and authenticated
curltests. - While reproducing the problem, watch
/var/log/nginx/error.log. It can reveal an open-file failure, a permission denial, an invalid password-file path, an upstream error, or a rewrite loop. - Confirm that the request reached the expected virtual host by checking the access log and the response headers.
Use a reload rather than stopping the service so existing connections are not needlessly interrupted. If a configuration test succeeds but behavior does not change, verify that the command tested the same Nginx binary and configuration file used by the running service.

Protect one static directory

root /srv/www/site;
try_files $uri $uri/ =404;
}
location / {
root /srv/www/site;
}
}
Only URLs under /reports/ challenge for credentials. The root location remains public because it has no inherited server-level authentication.
Protect a whole server and expose one health endpoint
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.test;
auth_basic "Internal service";
auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
location = /healthz {
auth_basic off;
return 200 "okn";
}
location / {
root /srv/www/site;
try_files $uri $uri/ =404;
}
}
This pattern minimizes accidental public locations, but it requires testing every exception and checking for regex blocks that redefine authentication.

Editing only the prefix block
If a regex location wins, edits to the prefix block have no effect for that request. Put both authentication directives in the regex block, use an intentional ^~ prefix, or move authentication to server scope.
Assuming a browser cache is the cause
Browsers cache credentials and redirects, but they do not turn a correctly protected request into a server-generated 404. Reproduce with curl so each request’s status and headers are visible.
A compact decision path
- Request the URL without credentials. If it is not
401, inspect location selection and inherited or disabled authentication. - Run
nginx -Tand identify every prefix and regex location that can match the exact URI. - Place
auth_basicandauth_basic_user_filein the location that serves the request, or set them at server scope and explicitly disable them only where intended. - Authenticate with
curl -I -u. A resulting 404 proves the remaining problem is content resolution or an upstream response. - Resolve
root/aliasmapping, checktry_files, confirm the file exists, and inspect the error log. - Run
nginx -t, reload, and retest both unauthenticated and authenticated requests.
Following this order prevents the two failures from being conflated: a missing password prompt is a location and access-control problem, while a 404 after successful authentication is a path or application-content problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Nginx return 404 instead of asking for a password?
The request likely matched a location without active auth_basic, commonly a regex handler such as location ~ .php$. It can also be a different virtual host or an upstream response. Confirm the winning configuration with nginx -T.
Should a protected missing file return 401 or 404?
An unauthenticated request should normally receive 401 and a WWW-Authenticate challenge before content lookup. After valid credentials, a missing file may correctly return 404.
Do I need to repeat auth_basic_user_file in a regex location?
Yes. Put both auth_basic and auth_basic_user_file in every block that can serve protected content, or define them at server scope. A child block that defines its own realm replaces the inherited setting.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can try_files be responsible for the authentication 404?
try_files does not decide authentication. It checks candidate paths after the request reaches the selected location and passes access checks. A 404 from it means the mapped file or directory was not found.
How do root and alias differ when troubleshooting 404?
root appends the complete URI to its directory; alias replaces the matching location prefix. For /downloads/report.zip, an alias of /srv/files/ maps to /srv/files/report.zip.
What does auth_basic off do?
The documented special value off cancels an inherited auth_basic directive. Because an issue has been reported with overrides in some contexts, verify your Nginx version and test the exact location if it still prompts.
Which user must be able to read the htpasswd file?
The Nginx worker account must read it and traverse every parent directory. Common worker names are www-data on Debian or Ubuntu and nginx on RHEL or CentOS. Keep the file outside the web root.

The Bottom Line
A 404 before any login prompt is usually a location-selection problem, not a password problem. Use nginx -T to find the winning prefix or regex block, apply both authentication directives there (or at server scope), then use unauthenticated and authenticated curl requests to separate access control from root, alias, try_files, and upstream file errors.
