Start by finding out whether Netflix fails on one device or whether the whole connection is affected. Test another app on the same device, try another device on the same network, and note Netflix’s exact message or code. Then apply the device-specific fix below, retrying Netflix after each step.

Messages such as “We’re unable to connect you to Netflix,” “Failed to connect to Netflix,” and “Not connected to the Internet” usually mean the device cannot reach Netflix, but damaged app data, an outdated browser, or an unsupported television can produce similar symptoms.

First, isolate the problem

Do not reset everything at once. The pattern of the failure tells you where to work and prevents unnecessary sign-outs or data loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether other apps work

  1. Open another internet app on the same TV, phone, tablet, or computer.
  2. If other apps also fail, run the device’s network test or open a website. Treat this as a connection problem first.
  3. If every other app works but Netflix does not, stay focused on Netflix, its app data, browser support, or device compatibility.

Pay attention to the scope as well as the symptom. A title that will not start, an app that will not open, and an error that appears during sign-in can point to different parts of the process. Note when the failure happens and whether it affects all Netflix activity or just one action. Do not assume that a TV is incompatible simply because it displays a connection error; first check whether its other apps can reach the internet and whether Netflix works on another device.

Test another device on the same connection

Try Netflix on a second device using the same Wi-Fi or wired network. Netflix failing everywhere points toward the modem, router, internet service, or a broader Netflix service problem. If only one device fails, use that device’s section below.

For a useful comparison, keep the network the same while switching devices. If possible, also try the affected phone on another connection, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. A failure that follows one device is a reason to inspect that device’s app, settings, or compatibility. A failure that affects several devices on one connection makes the home network or ISP a more likely place to investigate. These checks narrow the search; they do not by themselves identify a specific fault.

Record the exact message

Write down the complete wording and any numeric code before dismissing the screen. Search that exact wording or code in the Netflix Help Center rather than applying a generic fix to every error. For example, “Failed to connect to Netflix. Please check your device’s network connection.” is a more useful search than simply typing “Netflix broken.”

Netflix describes “We’re unable to connect you to Netflix” as typically pointing to a network-connectivity issue that prevents the device from reaching Netflix. That is a useful starting point, not proof that your ISP is at fault: an individual device’s connection, app data, or compatibility may also be involved. If a support page offers instructions for the exact code, follow those before trying unrelated resets.

Safe fixes that apply to most devices

Use this sequence when you are unsure where the fault lies. Stop when Netflix works; later steps can erase downloads or saved app data.

  1. Retry once. Close the error, reopen Netflix, and check whether the failure was temporary.
  2. Restart the device completely. Choose a full power-off or restart, not just standby or a locked screen.
  3. Check another app or the device network test. Confirm that the device actually reaches the internet.
  4. Restart the home network if several devices are affected. Turn off the streaming device, unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnect them, and wait about one minute for service to return. Some equipment needs longer.
  5. Sign out and sign back in. Use the account credentials you normally use for Netflix.
  6. Apply the exact-code instructions. On an error screen, select More Details when available and use Reload Netflix, Sign out, or Reset if those choices appear.

Menus differ by manufacturer and operating-system version. If a named option is missing, use the closest equivalent rather than changing unrelated settings.

Work through one change at a time and test Netflix after each one. That way, you can tell which step helped and avoid taking a more disruptive action than necessary. Keep your sign-in details available before signing out or resetting an app. If the device has existing offline downloads, avoid clearing data or uninstalling until you are comfortable losing them and downloading them again.

Fix Netflix on a TV or streaming player

1. Perform a true power cycle

  1. Turn the TV or streaming player fully off. Leaving it in standby does not complete this step.
  2. Leave it off for 15 seconds.
  3. Turn it back on, open Netflix, and retry the title or sign-in action.

A full power cycle clears a stalled app session without deleting your account or downloads.

2. Check the TV’s connection independently

Open another streaming app or the TV’s network-check screen. If that test fails, reconnect the TV to Wi-Fi or Ethernet and continue with the modem/router restart in the safe-fixes sequence. If other apps connect normally, record the Netflix message and continue with sign-out or reset options.

When checking Wi-Fi, confirm that the TV is connected to the network you expect rather than a different saved network. For a wired connection, reseat the cable at both the TV/player and router ends. A successful connection test helps separate a TV-to-network problem from a Netflix-specific issue, but keep the exact Netflix error for the next step.

3. Restart the modem and router when the connection is involved

  1. Switch off the TV or player.
  2. Unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the modem and router.
  4. Wait approximately one minute for them to reconnect; allow additional time if their status lights show that startup is still in progress.
  5. Turn on the TV or player and test Netflix.

If the player uses Wi-Fi, check that it is connected to the intended network. If it uses a cable, reseat the cable at both ends and retry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not judge the result while the modem or router is still starting up. Some equipment takes longer than a minute to reconnect. Once its connection is back, test both Netflix and another internet app on the TV. If the other app also remains offline, move toward network support rather than repeatedly resetting Netflix.

4. Use the recovery choices on the error screen

Select More Details when shown. Depending on the device, Netflix may offer Reload Netflix, Sign out, or Reset. Choose Reload first, then sign out and back in. Use Reset only when the earlier choices do not restore playback, because it can clear the app’s local state.

The wording and order of these options are not identical on every TV or player. Reset is not the same as restarting the TV: it is an app recovery option, so check what the device says it will remove and be prepared to sign in again. If none of the options appears, do not search for a hidden factory-reset sequence; use the error code and the device maker’s instructions instead.

5. Escalate with the code, not a guess

If Netflix still fails, search the complete code or wording in the Netflix Help Center. Contact Netflix when the code points to the account or service, the device manufacturer when the TV software or app integration is failing, and your internet service provider (ISP) when other apps or devices cannot connect.

Fix Netflix on an Android phone or tablet

Start with restart and connection checks

  1. Restart the Android device.
  2. Open another app or website to verify connectivity.
  3. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, if available, to determine whether the failure is tied to one connection.
  4. Restart the home modem/router if other devices on that network are also affected.

If Netflix works over mobile data but not Wi-Fi, focus on the home connection. If it fails on both while other apps work, continue with the Netflix app checks. A connection test is worth doing before clearing data because it can identify a network issue without removing downloads or signing you out.

Clear Netflix app data only after simpler steps

Android menus vary, but the control is usually under the Netflix entry in Settings followed by Apps or Applications, then Storage. Choose the option to clear stored data, confirm it, and open Netflix again. Clearing data removes downloaded shows and movies and signs you out, so have your Netflix email address and password available.

Do not confuse clearing the app’s stored data with a routine restart. It is a later troubleshooting step because it removes local Netflix information, including downloads. If you rely on downloaded titles for travel or limited connectivity, try the connection and restart checks first and postpone this step until you can sign in and download again.

Reinstall and update when app files are damaged

  1. Uninstall Netflix from the Android device.
  2. Restart the device.
  3. Install Netflix again from the device’s official app store.
  4. Sign in and test playback.
  5. Install available Android system updates if the problem continues.

Reinstallation also removes downloads and requires a new sign-in. Do not use it as the first step when you need to preserve offline titles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the official app store rather than an unfamiliar download source. If reinstalling does not help, note whether the same account works on another device and whether the Android device has pending system updates. That information helps determine whether to continue with device support or return to the network and error-code checks.

Fix Netflix on an iPhone or iPad

Test the connection directly

For “Failed to connect to Netflix,” Netflix recommends testing the connection through fast.com. Open the site in the device’s browser and wait for the test to complete. A failure there indicates that the connection needs attention before app troubleshooting.

Use the result as one check, not as a guarantee that Netflix playback is fixed. After addressing a connection problem, return to the Netflix app and retry the action that originally failed. If fast.com works but Netflix still displays an error, follow the error’s exact instructions and check the app’s relevant settings.

Check cellular-data permission

If you are using mobile service instead of Wi-Fi, open the iPhone or iPad’s cellular-data settings and verify that Netflix is allowed to use cellular data. The app can appear offline when this permission is disabled even though other apps work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you normally use Wi-Fi, test whether the issue changes when switching connections, where available. If Netflix works on one connection but not the other, that comparison can help you explain the problem to the ISP or network administrator. Do not change cellular settings unnecessarily if you are not trying to stream over mobile service.

Restart the device and home network

  1. Restart the iPhone or iPad.
  2. If Wi-Fi is involved, restart the modem and router by unplugging them for 30 seconds, reconnecting them, and waiting for the connection to return.
  3. Open Netflix and retry.

Use downloaded titles as a temporary option

Netflix’s iPhone and iPad guidance says downloaded titles can play offline while you remain signed in. This can let you watch existing downloads while you diagnose a connection failure; it does not repair streaming or download new titles.

Because offline playback depends on remaining signed in, avoid signing out as a temporary experiment if you are relying on downloaded titles and do not know your credentials. The offline option is a short-term way to watch existing downloads, not a substitute for restoring the connection.

Fix Netflix in a web browser

Confirm that the browser and operating system are supported

Netflix supports computer playback through Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari, but the required operating-system and browser versions differ by platform. Those requirements change, so do not rely on an old version number copied from another article. Check Netflix’s current browser and system-requirements page and compare both your browser version and operating-system version with its live list.

  • Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.

Checking both matters: a browser may be current while the operating system is too old for Netflix’s current requirements, or the operating system may be supported while the browser needs updating. Use Netflix’s live requirements rather than a remembered version number, since browser and operating-system specifications can change.

Update both components

  1. Install pending updates for the operating system.
  2. Update the browser through its own About or update screen.
  3. Close every browser window and reopen it.
  4. Sign in to Netflix again and test playback.

An updated browser on an unsupported operating system can still fail, so check both rather than updating only one.

Separate browser problems from network problems

Open another website in the same browser. If ordinary sites fail, troubleshoot the connection first. If only Netflix fails, use the exact Netflix message or code in the Help Center. Try a second supported browser to determine whether the failure is limited to one browser installation, while keeping the supported-browser and operating-system requirements in mind.

If Netflix works in a second supported browser, the first browser installation is a more likely focus than the TV, phone, or home connection. If it fails in multiple supported browsers and other sites also have trouble, return to the connection checks. Keep the distinction clear when asking for help: tell support which browsers and operating system you tested, rather than saying only that Netflix does not work on your computer.

What common Netflix messages mean

Message or symptom Most useful first action Next step if it remains
“We’re unable to connect you to Netflix.” Test another app and the device’s network connection. Restart the device and home network, then search the exact wording in the Help Center.
“Failed to connect to Netflix. Please check your device’s network connection.” On iPhone or iPad, test fast.com and check Netflix cellular-data permission. Restart the home network and use the displayed code or wording for targeted instructions.
“Not connected to the Internet.” Check whether other devices and apps can reach the internet. Contact the ISP if multiple devices remain offline.
Netflix works elsewhere but not on one TV Fully power off that TV/player for 15 seconds and retry. Use More Details, Reload Netflix, Sign out, or Reset as offered; check compatibility if the device is older.
Netflix fails only in one browser Verify the browser and operating system meet Netflix’s current requirements. Update both, restart the browser, and test another supported browser.

The wording helps choose a starting point, but it does not replace the device checks. For example, a network-sounding message can still be isolated to one device, while a TV that can open other apps may have a Netflix app or compatibility issue. Use the table to select a first action, then follow the relevant device section if the error persists.

When the problem is your home network

Contact the ISP when other internet apps fail, several household devices lose access, or the connection does not recover after the modem/router restart. Tell the ISP how many devices are affected and whether each uses Wi-Fi or a cable. This information helps distinguish a wireless problem from a service-line problem.

Before declaring the issue fixed, test the connection directly to Netflix at fast.com and then retry Netflix on the device that originally failed. A single successful web-page load does not prove that the streaming device has recovered.

When you contact the ISP, describe the tests rather than naming a cause you have not confirmed: which devices are affected, whether unrelated apps work, whether each device uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and whether restarting the modem and router changed anything. If only one TV is affected while other household devices work, mention that too; it may point back to the TV or its connection rather than a household-wide service problem.

When an older TV no longer supports Netflix

Some TVs and streaming devices made before 2015 may no longer have Netflix compatibility. This is different from a temporary network error: the TV may connect to the internet and run other apps while Netflix is unavailable or no longer offered in its app store.

Verify compatibility before buying anything

  1. Identify the TV or player’s exact model and software version.
  2. Check Netflix’s current supported-device list for that model or device family.
  3. Confirm that the TV has an available HDMI input and that the home network can reach the external player.
  4. Only then consider a supported streaming device.

Netflix lists the Amazon Fire TV Stick family among supported TV streaming devices. A streaming stick can be a compatibility workaround when the TV itself has lost Netflix support, but buying one will not cure a router failure, an account problem, or a general internet outage. Verify the current model’s support and connection requirements before purchase.

Compare any replacement or external player on the things that matter for this specific fix: current Netflix support, whether it works with the TV’s available connection, what port or connection it needs, and how straightforward setup will be on the home network. Check the exact model rather than assuming every version in a device family has identical support. No particular model or price is necessary to diagnose a generic connection error.

When to contact Netflix, the device maker, or the ISP

  • Contact Netflix: one device or account cannot connect after the device and network checks, and the exact error points to Netflix or sign-in behavior.
  • Contact the device manufacturer: the TV/player cannot update, Netflix is missing despite confirmed compatibility, or the manufacturer’s software produces the failure.
  • Contact the ISP: multiple devices or unrelated apps fail, or fast.com and other network tests remain unreachable after restarting the equipment.

Have the exact error text or code, device model, connection type, and the results of your other-app test ready. Those details are more actionable than saying only that Netflix is not working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the support route that matches the evidence. Netflix is the better first contact for an account-specific message; the device maker is better placed to address the TV’s operating system, app availability, or update failure; and the ISP is relevant when connectivity problems extend beyond Netflix. If you are uncertain, the error-code instructions in Netflix Help Center can help clarify what the message refers to before you contact anyone.

A concise troubleshooting checklist

  • Did you test another app on the affected device?
  • Does Netflix fail on another device using the same connection?
  • Did you record the complete error wording or code?
  • Did you fully power off the TV or player for 15 seconds?
  • Did you restart the modem and router for 30 seconds and wait for reconnection?
  • Did you avoid clearing Android data or reinstalling until you were ready to lose downloads and sign in again?
  • On iPhone or iPad, did you test fast.com and check Netflix’s cellular-data permission?
  • On a computer, are both the browser and operating system on Netflix’s current supported list?
  • If the TV is older, did you verify current compatibility before considering an external player?

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Netflix say it cannot connect when other apps work?

Other apps working narrows the issue to Netflix, its app data, the particular device, or compatibility, but it does not identify one cause by itself. Record the full message or code, restart the device, and search that exact wording in the Netflix Help Center. On an older TV, check current model compatibility if Netflix is missing or unavailable.

Will restarting my modem and router delete anything?

The recommended restart is to switch off the streaming device, unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnect them, and wait for service to return. This is different from clearing Netflix app data, which removes Android downloads and signs you out. Allow the network equipment longer than about a minute if it is still reconnecting.

Will clearing Netflix data on Android remove my downloads?

Yes. Clearing stored Netflix data or uninstalling the app removes downloaded shows and movies and signs you out. Try a device restart and connection check first, and have your sign-in details available before using either app-data step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I watch Netflix on an iPhone or iPad without internet?

You can play titles already downloaded to the device offline while you remain signed in. Offline playback does not restore streaming or allow you to download more titles, so use it as a temporary option while troubleshooting.

Should I buy a streaming stick if Netflix stopped working on my TV?

Only consider one after checking that the TV itself has lost Netflix compatibility, identifying the exact TV model, and confirming an available HDMI input and network connection. Some TVs and streaming devices made before 2015 may no longer support Netflix. A supported Amazon Fire TV Stick may be a compatibility workaround, but it will not fix an account issue or a general network failure.

When should I contact my internet provider instead of Netflix?

Contact your ISP if unrelated apps fail, several devices on the same connection have trouble, or the connection remains unavailable after restarting the modem and router. Tell the ISP which devices are affected and whether they use Wi-Fi or a cable. If only Netflix fails on one device, start with that device’s error code and troubleshooting steps.

The Bottom Line

Start with scope, not a reset: check another app, test Netflix on a second device using the same connection, and save the exact error message or code. Restart the affected device, then the home network if multiple devices are affected. Use the specific TV, Android, iPhone/iPad, or browser steps before taking data-erasing actions. If the issue is a confirmed older-TV compatibility problem, verify the current supported-device list and connections before considering an external player.
