If Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered crashes, stutters, or fails to recognize a controller on Windows, work from least disruptive to most disruptive: verify EA’s requirements, save a DxDiag report, close conflicting background software, update Windows and your graphics driver, select the correct GPU, repair the installation, and then test frame pacing and input devices. Reinstalling or replacing hardware should come later.
Controller-triggered crashes and “unrecognized” devices have been reported in EA community threads, but those posts are individual reports rather than proof of a universal game defect. The sequence below separates EA’s general PC guidance from lower-confidence, case-specific tests.
1. Confirm the PC meets the published requirements
Start with the specifications Electronic Arts lists for the Windows version of the game. The page identifies the release as November 6, 2020, and lists the same memory and storage amounts for minimum and recommended configurations. These are publisher requirements, not an independent performance benchmark.
| Specification | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 10 | 64-bit Windows 10 |
| Processor | AMD Phenom II X4 965 or Intel Core i3-2120 equivalent | AMD FX-8350 or Intel Core i5-3570K equivalent |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM |
| Graphics | Radeon HD 5870 or GeForce GT 640 equivalent | Radeon R9 270x or GeForce GTX 660 equivalent |
| Graphics API | DirectX 11-compatible video | DirectX 11-compatible video |
| Storage | 45 GB | 45 GB |
Check the complete listing on EA’s Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered product page. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a particular frame rate, and being above the minimum does not rule out driver, launcher, or input conflicts.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
What the requirements can and cannot tell you
The table is a first filter, not a diagnosis. A PC can satisfy the processor and graphics requirements yet still launch with the wrong GPU selected, fail after a damaged installation file, or conflict with an overlay. Conversely, a system below the listed requirements may not be able to deliver stable performance even after software changes. Check both the processor and graphics adapter rather than judging the machine by RAM alone; EA lists 8 GB for both tiers. The 45 GB figure is also the publisher’s stated storage requirement for both tiers, so verify that the installation location has room before attempting a repair or reinstall.
Create a DxDiag baseline
EA recommends DxDiag when a PC game crashes, runs slowly, or has graphical problems. It records the processor, memory, graphics adapter, driver version and date, and DirectX information, giving you something concrete to compare with the requirements and to send to support.
- Open Windows Search and type
dxdiag. - Launch the DxDiag app. If Windows offers a 64-bit report, choose it.
- Select Save All Information and save the text report somewhere easy to find.
- Review the processor, installed memory, display adapter, driver date/version, and DirectX details.
- On a laptop, check which graphics adapter the game is likely using. A system can have a capable dedicated GPU while the game is assigned to integrated graphics.
Keep the report for escalation rather than posting personal system details publicly. EA’s step-by-step explanation is in How to diagnose game issues on your PC using DxDiag.
2. Run the low-risk crash checks first
These changes are reversible and usually take less time than reinstalling the game. Before changing several things, write down when the crash occurs: at launch, while loading a race, after opening a menu, or immediately after a key or button press. That distinction determines which branch to test and makes a support report much more useful.
Close background programs, then try a clean boot
Exit browsers with many tabs, recording tools, hardware-monitoring utilities, overlays, and other applications before launching the game. If the crash stops, reopen those programs one at a time to identify the conflict. When ordinary closing does not help, use Windows’ clean-boot procedure to start with nonessential services and startup items disabled. Re-enable items in groups afterward so you can identify what changes the result.
A clean boot is a diagnostic state, not a permanent gaming requirement. Keep a note of anything you disable, and restore normal startup after the test if it does not change the symptom. This avoids confusing a temporary troubleshooting configuration with the actual cause.
Install current Windows and graphics-driver updates
Run Windows Update and restart. Then obtain the graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer’s official support channel rather than from a third-party driver-updater utility. A driver update can solve a rendering fault, but a newly introduced driver can also coincide with stutter; if the problem began immediately after an update, record that timing for support and test the manufacturer’s available stable driver options.

Make sure the game uses the dedicated GPU
On a notebook with integrated and dedicated graphics, use Windows’ per-app graphics settings or the GPU vendor’s control panel to assign the game to the high-performance adapter. Connect the laptop to AC power while testing and use the manufacturer’s performance mode if one exists. This check matters when the hardware appears to meet EA’s requirements but performance is unexpectedly poor. After changing the assignment, fully exit and relaunch the game so the new selection is actually used.
Repair the installation in the correct storefront
For the EA app:
- Open Library.
- Find Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered.
- Select Manage.
- Choose Repair and wait for the scan and replacement of damaged files to finish.
- Restart the EA app and test the game before changing several other settings.
For a Steam installation, the EA app’s repair path does not directly apply. Use Steam’s installed-file verification function instead, then launch the game again. Do not run both repair procedures repeatedly without testing between them; otherwise you will not know which action changed the result. If either repair process reports files it cannot replace, note the message and include it in a support request.
Reinstall only after repair fails
EA lists reinstalling the game and the EA app among its general crash remedies. Reinstallation is slower, uses additional bandwidth, and can remove local configuration, so use it after requirements, drivers, background software, and file repair have been checked. Follow the current steps in EA’s crash and freezing guide. If you reinstall, test the unmodified installation before restoring overlays, custom graphics profiles, or additional peripherals.
3. Reduce stutter and inconsistent frame pacing
Stuttering can come from a system operating close to the minimum specification, an unsuitable graphics setting, driver interaction, background load, or unstable manual tuning. Treat each setting below as a diagnostic test and change one variable at a time.
Lower the settings that cost the most
Begin with the game’s resolution, texture, shadow, reflection, and effects settings. If the PC is near EA’s minimum specifications, lower the overall preset first, then raise individual options gradually. Close unnecessary programs while testing so available CPU, memory, and GPU time are not changing between runs. If lowering settings changes nothing, restore them and move to the driver, frame-pacing, and background-process checks rather than leaving image quality reduced without a benefit.
Use a repeatable test scene
Compare the same type of gameplay after each change. Note whether the hitch appears in menus, during loading, only while driving, or when many effects are on screen. Also record whether the problem is a brief pause, consistently uneven motion, or a full crash. This simple log prevents a setting change that helps one situation from being mistaken for a universal fix.
Cap the frame rate or enable V-Sync
EA’s crash guidance specifically recommends trying a frame-rate cap and enabling Vertical Sync (V-Sync) to match rendered frames to the display’s refresh rate. Test a cap that your system can sustain rather than an unstable peak. Compare the result in the same driving scene and note whether the hitching occurs during menus, loading, or gameplay. Change one of the two controls first, test, and then test the other so you can tell which one affected frame pacing.

Test the latest-DirectX option, if the game exposes it
EA’s graphics troubleshooting article suggests disabling the latest DirectX version in a game’s video settings and restarting when that option is available. Use the setting exactly as presented by the game, restart fully, and compare the result. If no such option appears, do not add launch parameters from unverified posts simply to imitate the test.
EA notes that driver conflicts, including problems associated with a new driver, can contribute to graphics trouble. Read the broader procedure in EA’s PC graphics troubleshooting guide.
Return manual overclocks to factory values
If you have overclocked the processor or graphics card, restore factory clocks as a stability test. A game that crashes only under a particular workload may expose an otherwise unnoticed marginal overclock. Leave the system at stock settings while you complete the other diagnostics. If stability returns, document the original tuning rather than immediately applying it again.
4. Check Windows and DirectX components when the symptoms point there
Keep Windows current before pursuing component repairs. EA’s DirectX and EA app guidance also describes installing Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime when libraries used by the EA app are missing. This is targeted troubleshooting guidance, not evidence that every Hot Pursuit Remastered crash requires a DirectX-runtime reinstall.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the current instructions in EA’s DirectX and EA app troubleshooting guide. If the game launches normally and only stutters, prioritize graphics settings, frame pacing, drivers, and background processes instead of repeatedly reinstalling runtimes. If the runtime step produces an error, save the wording and report it rather than downloading replacement files from an unofficial site.
5. Isolate controller and wheel problems
Use a separate input test when the game works with keyboard and mouse but crashes when you press a controller button, shows a device as “unrecognized,” or stops responding during mapping. EA forum discussions include an Xbox-controller recognition report and a Logitech G29 report in which pressing a key or button preceded a crash. Those are community anecdotes, not an official compatibility list or a confirmed global solution.

Test one input device at a time
- Exit the game completely.
- Disconnect extra controllers, wheels, flight sticks, and other USB input devices.
- Connect only the device you want to test, directly to the PC rather than through an unpowered hub where possible.
- Check the device’s official driver or firmware utility for updates.
- Start the game and test ordinary driving, then the specific button or wheel action that triggered the fault.
- Reconnect other devices one at a time if the single-device test succeeds.
This isolates device interactions without assuming that a new controller is required. Do not disable arbitrary Human Interface Devices in Device Manager: identify each device first, because disabling the wrong HID can remove keyboard, mouse, accessibility, or other essential input.
When a wheel driver or security tool may be involved
In the G29 discussion, an EA staff member suggested checking wheel-driver updates and whether security software interferes. Temporarily test with a known-safe security configuration only according to your security product’s documented procedure, and restore protection immediately after the test. Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled as a permanent “fix.”

A separate EA forum discussion about crashes while changing keys contains community suggestions to clear the EA app cache, repair files, check whether security software or write permissions block the launcher, and disable overlays. One user reported that Windows 8 compatibility mode and disabling fullscreen optimizations helped that individual case. Try these only after the basic repair and driver checks, record which change you made, and undo it if it has no measurable effect. Compatibility mode is particularly easy to forget later, so keep a note if you enable it.

6. Compare the available fixes by cost and risk
Most useful checks cost nothing beyond time. The main paid or disruptive choices are not automatic recommendations: a reinstall consumes bandwidth and time, and a replacement controller is only relevant if the existing device is faulty or unavailable.
| Action | Cost or disruption | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Requirements check, DxDiag, Windows update, driver check | No purchase; low risk | Always first, especially for launch and graphics symptoms |
| Close apps, clean boot, settings changes, frame cap or V-Sync | No purchase; immediately reversible | Stutter, freezes, or suspected software conflicts |
| EA app repair or Steam file verification | No purchase; may take scanning time | After basic checks or when files may be damaged |
| Reinstall game or EA app | High time and bandwidth; local configuration may be removed | Only after repair and driver checks fail |
| New controller or wheel | Purchase required; no guarantee of a game-specific fix | Only when the current device is defective or unavailable |
A PC-compatible Xbox-style gamepad can be a practical replacement category if your current controller has a hardware fault, but the reported Hot Pursuit Remastered issues do not establish that buying one resolves recognition or crash problems. Do not spend money on paid driver-updater or “PC repair” utilities for this troubleshooting sequence.
7. Pick the troubleshooting branch that matches the symptom
| Symptom | Start with | Risk and reversibility | Evidence level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crash at launch or return to desktop | Requirements and DxDiag, background apps, Windows and GPU-driver status, then installation repair | Settings and repair are low risk; reinstall is disruptive | EA general PC guidance |
| Stutter during gameplay | Dedicated-GPU assignment, lower graphics settings, frame cap or V-Sync, and the available DirectX-option test | Graphics changes are immediately reversible | EA general graphics and crash guidance |
| Crash when pressing a controller or wheel button | One-device-at-a-time test, official device driver, then security/overlay isolation | Disconnecting peripherals is reversible; avoid unidentified HID changes | Community reports plus cautious isolation tests |
| Controller appears as “unrecognized” | Reconnect only that controller, check its official driver, and test without other HID devices | No hardware purchase is implied | Individual EA forum report |
| Crash while changing key bindings | Repair files, clear the EA app cache, check permissions and overlays, then consider compatibility-mode tests | Lower-confidence settings should be undone if ineffective | Community suggestions in one discussion |
8. Escalate with useful evidence
If the game still crashes or stutters after the relevant branch, contact EA support with a concise symptom description and your saved DxDiag report. State whether the failure occurs at launch, during a particular race, or immediately after a keyboard, controller, or wheel input. Include the storefront, Windows version, GPU model and driver date, whether the game uses a dedicated GPU, the repair result, and which reversible tests changed the behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the minimum PC requirements for Hot Pursuit Remastered?
EA lists 64-bit Windows 10, an AMD Phenom II X4 965 or Intel Core i3-2120 equivalent processor, 8 GB RAM, a Radeon HD 5870 or GeForce GT 640 equivalent GPU, DirectX 11-compatible video, and 45 GB of storage. Recommended specifications use an AMD FX-8350 or Intel Core i5-3570K equivalent processor and Radeon R9 270x or GeForce GTX 660 equivalent graphics, while memory and storage remain 8 GB and 45 GB.
How do I create the DxDiag report EA support may request?
Search Windows for dxdiag, open the app, choose the 64-bit report when available, select Save All Information, and save the text file. It includes processor, memory, graphics adapter, driver, and DirectX details.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallShould I repair or reinstall first?
Repair first. In the EA app, open Library, select the game’s Manage menu, and choose Repair. Steam users should use Steam’s installed-file verification. Reinstall the game or EA app only after repair and the lower-risk driver and background-software checks fail.
What should I try when the game stutters?
Confirm the dedicated GPU is selected, close unnecessary programs, lower graphics settings, and test a frame-rate cap or V-Sync. If the game exposes a latest-DirectX option, EA suggests disabling it and restarting as a diagnostic test. Return manual CPU or GPU overclocks to factory values.
Why is my controller shown as unrecognized?
Exit the game, disconnect other controllers and HID devices, reconnect only the affected controller, and check its manufacturer’s official driver or firmware utility. Reconnect other devices one at a time if the isolated test works. The community reports do not establish a universal compatibility defect or require a replacement controller.
What if Hot Pursuit Remastered crashes when I press a controller or wheel button?
Test one input device at a time, check the wheel or controller driver, and note whether security software or overlays affect the result. Avoid disabling unidentified HID devices. These steps are cautious isolation tests based on individual community reports, not confirmed game-wide fixes.
Is a new controller or paid repair utility necessary?
No. Complete the software, file-repair, graphics, and single-device checks first. A replacement PC-compatible Xbox-style gamepad only makes sense when the existing device is defective or unavailable, and paid driver-updater or PC-repair utilities are not needed for this sequence.
The Bottom Line
Start with EA’s requirements and a DxDiag report, then update Windows and the official GPU driver, close background software, assign the dedicated GPU, and repair the installation through the correct storefront. For stutter, test lower settings, a frame cap or V-Sync, and the available DirectX option. For controller faults, isolate one device and verify its official driver before considering disruptive steps. If the problem remains, send EA support the DxDiag report and a precise symptom log.
