Stop the restart loop before changing MySQL settings. Save the error log, data directory, configuration, stack trace or core dump, and operating-system logs, then identify whether mysqld is crashing, being killed, or failing during InnoDB crash recovery. The exact final InnoDB message determines whether you should fix storage or memory pressure, remove a bad workload, extract data with forced recovery, or restore from backup.
Most unexpected exits recover automatically when MySQL starts again. Repeated failure during recovery is different: it indicates corruption, missing files, incompatible changes, or an underlying hardware or software problem. innodb_force_recovery is an emergency data-extraction setting, not a repair tool. Use it only on a preserved copy, beginning at level 1 and increasing one level at a time.

Repeated automatic restarts can overwrite useful log context and can make a failing disk worse. Disable the service’s restart policy temporarily or stop it manually, depending on your service manager. Do not delete ibdata, undo files, redo files, or individual tablespace files as a generic fix.
- Stop MySQL cleanly if it is still running. Use your normal service command, such as
sudo systemctl stop mysql. If it will not stop, terminate it only after recording the process ID and current symptoms. - Make an untouched copy or storage snapshot. Copy the complete MySQL data directory, including system tables, undo tablespaces, redo logs, binary logs, and configuration references. A filesystem snapshot is preferable; otherwise copy while MySQL is stopped with a command such as
rsync -a --numeric-ids /var/lib/mysql/ /srv/mysql-preserved/. Adjust paths for your installation. - Save the configuration and version. Record the output of
mysqld --version, the active option files, recent upgrades or downgrades, filesystem changes, and the last known-good backup. Save the output ofSHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'datadir';andSHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'log_error';when a connection is possible. - Preserve logs. Copy the MySQL error log, service-manager or Windows Event Viewer entries, kernel logs, storage-controller messages, and any core dump or stack trace. Keep the final 50 to 100 lines before each exit together with timestamps.
- Write down recent changes. Include schema migrations, new plugins, configuration edits, disk replacement, virtual-machine moves, operating-system updates, and unusual workload or traffic.
Oracle’s operational guidance is direct: when an operation fails or a bug is suspected, look at the MySQL server error log. The last InnoDB message before the process exits is usually more useful than the generic “server crashed” line.

Identify which kind of failure you have
Different failures can produce similar restart messages. Classify the incident before selecting a remedy.
| What you observe | Likely class | What it means for the fix |
|---|---|---|
mysqld exits with an assertion, segmentation fault, or stack trace while serving queries |
Process crash or software defect | Capture the trace, stop the triggering workload, check the exact MySQL release, and investigate a bug or corrupted page. Do not repeatedly restart against the original files. |
| The operating system reports an out-of-memory kill, cgroup kill, or service timeout | External termination or resource pressure | Correct memory limits, swap, disk-full conditions, file descriptors, or service timeouts. A forced-recovery setting does not solve an OOM kill. |
| MySQL starts crash recovery, then exits while scanning, rolling back, or applying redo | Crash-recovery failure | Preserve the directory, test a clone, and consider incremental forced recovery for logical extraction. |
The log reports a corrupt redo log or ER_IB_MSG_LOG_CORRUPT |
Redo-log corruption | Check storage and version history. Do not copy redo files from another data directory. Rebuild or restore when redo recovery cannot complete. |
| A table or tablespace is missing, cannot be opened, or has an invalid space identifier | Physical or dictionary/tablespace damage | Find the missing file and restore a consistent physical backup or extract readable tables from a clone. |
| Deadlocks or lock waits occur but the server remains available | Workload concurrency problem | Inspect transactions and indexes; this is normally not an InnoDB corruption incident. |
Read the error log and run the server in the foreground
Find the active error-log path with SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'log_error'; when the server accepts connections. If it cannot start, inspect the service configuration and the default locations used by your package. Search for the first InnoDB error and the final message immediately before termination; do not rely only on the first warning printed during startup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a controlled diagnostic attempt, stop the service and launch the same binary and option file in the foreground on the preserved clone. On a Unix-like system, an administrator might use:
sudo -u mysql mysqld --defaults-file=/etc/mysql/my.cnf --console
On Windows, starting mysqld.exe --console from an elevated command prompt displays startup messages directly. Use the paths and service account appropriate to your installation. Never run a second mysqld against a live production data directory.

For a server that stays up, capture a diagnostic snapshot with:
SHOW ENGINE INNODB STATUS");
SHOW FULL PROCESSLIST;
The InnoDB monitor output can reveal long rollbacks, lock waits, dictionary problems, and the last detected corruption. For persistent monitoring, enable the relevant InnoDB status output in a controlled window and turn it off after collecting enough evidence. A deadlock report is not proof that files are corrupt; it describes conflicting transactions and requires query or index changes.
If MySQL still starts: secure a verified backup first
A successful restart means only that the process reached its ready state. It does not prove every page is readable or every table is logically consistent.
- Take a new logical or physical backup before experimenting. Record the backup method, MySQL version, and completion time.
- Restore that backup to an isolated test instance and run representative reads and application queries. A backup that cannot be restored is not a reliable recovery point.
- On a stable instance, inspect only suspected tables with
CHECK TABLE db_name.table_name;. Large tables can make this expensive, and a clean result does not validate unrelated tables or the underlying storage. - Review disk health, filesystem errors, SMART or cloud-volume alerts, free space, memory pressure, and kernel logs. Correct an external fault before trusting another backup.
If checks identify a damaged InnoDB table, logical export and rebuild is safer than editing files. Create a new table with the correct definition, copy rows that can be read, and verify counts and constraints. If reads fail, move to extraction from a clone and plan a restore rather than repeatedly writing to the damaged instance.

Use innodb_force_recovery only to extract data
innodb_force_recovery accepts nonzero values from 1 through 6 in current MySQL 8.0. It suppresses progressively more recovery work so that a damaged instance may start long enough to dump data. It does not repair pages, undo logs, dictionaries, or redo logs.
| Level | Recovery work suppressed | Operational meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Normal recovery | Default. Use only when the data directory is healthy enough for ordinary startup. |
| 1 | Some background recovery work is disabled | First emergency level to try on a clone. Attempt read-only logical dumps. |
| 2 | Background master-thread activity is disabled | Can bypass failures in background processing; still an extraction mode. |
| 3 | Transaction rollback is disabled | Unfinished transactions may remain. Data that appears readable can still be incomplete. |
| 4 | Insert-buffer merge is disabled | Dangerous. MySQL warns that level 4 and higher can permanently corrupt data files and the instance is effectively read-only. |
| 5 | Undo-log scanning is skipped | Transactions may be left in an unusable state. Use only when lower levels cannot start. |
| 6 | Redo roll-forward is skipped | Pages can remain obsolete because redo changes are not applied. This is last-resort extraction, not recovery. |
Values 4 through 6 can permanently corrupt data files. Treat every nonzero level as temporary, keep the original untouched, and assume the resulting instance cannot be returned safely to production.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Incremental forced-recovery procedure
- Stop MySQL and clone the entire data directory or create a storage snapshot. Work on the clone, not the only copy.
- Add the setting under the server section of a separate option file or temporary configuration:
[mysqld] innodb_force_recovery=1 - Start the clone in the foreground and read the new error log. If it starts, do not run application writes, optimize tables, or attempt normal repairs.
- Connect with a dedicated administrative account and immediately dump readable data. Begin with the most important schemas and tables rather than waiting for a perfect all-database dump.
- If level 1 cannot start, stop the clone, change only the value to 2, and retry. Increase one level at a time. Record which level starts and which tables fail.
- Remove the setting after extraction is complete. Do not copy the forced-recovery data directory back over production.
For a healthy server, a typical logical backup command is:
mysqldump --all-databases --routines --events --triggers --single-transaction --quick > full.sql
Forced recovery can make transaction-consistent options impossible or unsafe. If a full dump fails, dump one database or table at a time, use --quick to stream rows, and capture errors. Test the resulting SQL on a clean instance. A dump that completes is not automatically complete: compare table lists, row counts where possible, views, triggers, routines, events, users, and application-critical queries.

Some damaged tables will not dump even at a high level. Export unaffected tables first. For a partially readable table, select explicit columns and bounded primary-key ranges, committing each range to a separate file. This can salvage rows around a damaged page, but missing ranges must be recorded and reconciled with business data. Do not use REPAIR TABLE for InnoDB; that operation is intended for other storage engines and does not rebuild InnoDB corruption.
Match common error messages to the next action
Redo-log corruption
Messages indicating a corrupt redo log, including ER_IB_MSG_LOG_CORRUPT, require special caution. That error code was added in MySQL 8.0.30. Check the exact server version, redo-log configuration, shutdown history, and storage-device errors. Redo-log layout and behavior changed across MySQL releases, including 8.0.30, so files must not be copied between unrelated data directories or exchanged between versions as a shortcut. If recovery cannot complete on a clone, extract what is readable and rebuild from a known-good backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMissing or damaged tablespaces
A missing .ibd file, an invalid tablespace ID, or a dictionary mismatch usually indicates that a file was deleted, moved, restored incompletely, or damaged on disk. Locate the exact file named in the log and compare it with the backup manifest. Do not create an empty file with the same name. A transportable tablespace import requires a valid export and matching metadata; otherwise restore the complete instance or rebuild the affected schema from logical data.
Assertion failures and repeated page corruption
An assertion identifies an internal invariant that MySQL could not maintain. Preserve the stack trace and the page or space identifiers, then check whether the same assertion is documented for your exact release. Upgrade or downgrade only after a tested backup and a reproducible recovery plan. Repeated corruption after a rebuild strongly suggests failing storage, memory, a controller, or virtualization infrastructure rather than a single bad SQL statement.

Out-of-memory kills and disk exhaustion
Check kernel or service logs for an OOM-killer entry, container memory limit, or cgroup event. Check free space for the data, temporary, binary-log, and redo-log filesystems. InnoDB may need substantial temporary space during recovery. Correct the limit or storage problem, then restart normally; forced recovery does not fix an external kill.
Deadlocks and lock waits
Deadlocks are expected under concurrent writes and should be handled by retrying transactions. Use SHOW ENGINE INNODB STATUS and application logs to identify the two statements, then add or adjust indexes, shorten transactions, and keep access order consistent. If the process itself exits, investigate a separate crash or resource issue instead of treating the deadlock report as file corruption.

When corruption is confirmed, the integrity-first path is a clean installation or data directory followed by a restore. Forced recovery is successful only when it gives you a usable, validated export.
- Provision storage with enough capacity for the restored data, temporary files, binary logs, and future growth. Verify filesystem and hardware health first.
- Install the same MySQL major and minor release used to create the backup unless your tested migration plan says otherwise. Review authentication, SQL modes, character sets, time zones, and configuration changes.
- Initialize a new data directory rather than deleting selected files from the old one. Keep the old directory offline and immutable.
- Restore a physical backup according to its documented procedure, or import the validated logical dump. Restore system objects, routines, events, triggers, and users deliberately; do not blindly import damaged internal tables.
- Run application-level checks: representative reads and writes, foreign-key checks, row-count comparisons, critical reports, and checksum or reconciliation queries for important business tables.
- Switch traffic only after monitoring the error log, replication state, latency, disk usage, and backup completion on the rebuilt instance.
From MySQL 8.0.26 onward, checkpoint advancement is restricted until redo recovery and dictionary-metadata transfer complete. A server that appears to pause at this stage may still be working; distinguish a long recovery from a process that has exited by checking the process, CPU and disk activity, and fresh log timestamps.
Choose between extraction, restore, and specialist help
| Path | Use it when | Data-loss and downtime profile | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal restart and targeted repair | The server starts, storage is healthy, and checks identify a limited logical problem. | Usually lowest downtime; risk rises if you keep writing to a damaged instance. | Moderate. Take a verified backup first. |
| Forced-recovery extraction | Startup recovery fails but readable pages may still be available. | Downtime continues while dumps are made; unreadable pages or unfinished transactions may be lost. | Use a clone. The original remains available for other recovery attempts. |
| Restore from a physical backup | The backup is recent, complete, and has been tested. | Predictable restore downtime; recovery-point loss equals the interval since the backup or archived logs. | High if the original files are preserved. |
| Clean rebuild plus logical dump | Physical files or metadata are corrupt but forced recovery can export enough data. | Longer downtime and possible table-level loss; offers the cleanest resulting data directory. | High when the source clone is retained. |
| Database-storage specialist | Hardware faults, repeated page corruption, production data loss, or no trustworthy backup are involved. | Cost and downtime depend on the incident; early involvement can prevent destructive experiments. | Varies. Provide preserved images and logs, not a modified original. |
If production data is at risk and you have repeated page corruption or no reliable restore, involve an experienced MySQL/InnoDB recovery specialist such as a support provider familiar with physical recovery. Verify current service terms before engaging anyone, and give them the untouched image, configuration history, version, logs, and backup inventory.
Prevent the next crash from becoming data loss
- Automate backups and test restores on an isolated server. Record recovery-point and recovery-time objectives, not just backup success.
- Monitor disk latency, filesystem errors, SMART or cloud-volume alerts, free space, memory, swap, and container limits.
- Keep MySQL, operating-system, firmware, and virtualization changes under a documented rollout and rollback plan. Test major-version upgrades with a copy of production data.
- Ship error logs and service events to separate storage so a failed host does not erase the evidence.
- Use replication or another tested high-availability design for availability, but do not treat a replica as a substitute for independent backups; corruption can replicate.
- Alert on repeated restarts, increasing crash-recovery duration, failed backups, and new InnoDB corruption messages.
- Document the data directory, redo and undo locations, option files, service account, backup commands, and the person authorized to make recovery changes.
The practical rule is simple: preserve first, diagnose from the final error-log message, and choose the least destructive path that meets your recovery objective. Forced recovery buys an opportunity to read data; only validation followed by a clean rebuild or trusted restore returns you to an integrity-tested database.
